QNB forecast a slight improvement in global growth in 2026, amid stability in major economies, projecting a rate of 3.2 percent, which is slightly higher than overall forecasts.The bank's weekly report said that this growth rate points to a modest acceleration in activity, although it remains below long-term growth trends, which are more balanced and convergent rates.The report discussed the key factors shaping growth prospects in the three largest economies which together account for nearly 60 percent of the global economy. It expected US economic growth to remain strong, supported by robust household consumer spending and investment flows.In this context, the report noted that consumption is benefiting from the strength of household balance sheets, which are in their strongest financial position in decades, in addition to low unemployment rates.It said that the boom in artificial intelligence is stimulating investment flows and is expected to increase productivity through the adoption of new technologies. Moreover, the Federal Reserve is continuing a major shift in its policy as it moves from tightening toward neutrality.The report projected that the federal funds rate would be cut to 3.5 percent by the end of 2026, which would help support investment and consumption growth by making credit cheaper, increasing the attractiveness of new business activity, and reducing the opportunity cost of spending. This could lead to a slight acceleration in US economic growth to around 2.2 percent in 2026.As for the Chinese economy, the report discussed the possibility of a slight slowdown in growth. However, strong export performance, domestic demand, and rising productivity are expected collectively to support growth of around 5 percent, which is the target rate the government is expected to adopt.The report noted that despite significant uncertainty surrounding trade policy and the higher tariffs imposed by the United States in 2025, China's trade surplus exceeded one trillion US dollars for the first time last year.In this regard, it highlighted that the roughly 30 percent year-on-year decline in Chinese exports to the United States by the end of 2025 was offset by the flexibility of companies that successfully redirected their shipments toward alternative markets.The report added that the Chinese economy continues its transition from exporting simple consumer goods to manufacturing advanced technology and high-value-added products, a process that is moving China to the top of global supply chains and contributing to higher productivity growth. In addition, domestic consumption is expected to remain supported by fiscal policy, along with further gradual monetary easing, strengthening the favorable factors underpinning moderately positive outlooks for 2026.As for the Euro area, the bank projected a slight acceleration in economic growth, supported by fiscal spending and a less restrictive monetary policy for activity. It noted that spending under the European Union's Next Generation EU (NGEU) program contributed about 0.5 percentage points to overall growth in 2025 and could continue to support growth in 2026 if it remains on track.In addition, the Russia-Ukraine war triggered defense spending initiatives estimated to increase GDP by more than 1 percent in over 16 countries that applied to benefit from coordinated flexibility under the EU's fiscal rules.The report pointed out that monetary policy has become more accommodative, as the European Central Bank cut its benchmark interest rate by 200 basis points from a highly restrictive level of 4 percent in mid-2024 to 2 percent by June of last year.It said it expects the interest rate cut to stimulate real private-sector credit growth, noting that economic indicators showed a clear improvement in the services sector, which entered an expansion phase during the last four months of 2025.QNB's weekly report concluded by noting that since the services sector accounts for about 70 percent of the euro area economy, this was an encouraging sign for the region, which is expected to achieve growth of 1.5 percent in 2026, higher than previous forecasts.

The 17th edition of the Qatar International Falcons and Hunting Festival (Marmi 2026) opened Thursday at Sealine under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani with the backing from the Social and Sports Activities Support Fund (Daam).The festival launched with the Hudd Challenge, a competition for young Saker falcons. Falcons are tasked with catching or cornering a released homing pigeon. Winners receive QR100,000 and qualify for the finals, with the top prize including a Lexus car.In the first round, five participants qualified for the finals: Al Shamsi Team (UAE), Al Gharbia Team, Al Mashghar Team, Al Nasraniya Team, and Mohamed Ahmed Al Harbi (UAE). Winners were crowned on-site by Muteb Mubarak al-Qahtani, chairman of the Marmi Festival; and his deputy, Abdulwahab Omair al-Nuaimi.Mohamed bin Mubarak al-Ali, head of committees and festival spokesperson, highlighted the 17th edition as a milestone in organisational development, field management, and competition rules. “Each edition introduces new elements, building on cumulative experience to enhance the level of competition and preserve Qatar’s falconry heritage,” he said.Shawi al-Kaabi, head of the Hudd Challenge, stressed the importance of participants’ safety and adherence to competition guidelines. The challenge uses tracking devices and specialised judges to ensure fair evaluation of the falcons’ performance while protecting both birds and competitors.Falconers lauded the festival for its role in maintaining Qatar’s and the Gulf’s falconry heritage. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalid al-Thani of the Al Mashghar Team expressed excitement at qualifying his team’s first falcon this year, noting strong preparation with 11 participating falcons. Mohamed Ahmed Jaber al-Harbi (UAE) described the festival as a vibrant, well-organised event, offering an atmosphere of healthy competition and camaraderie.The festival’s opening day drew large crowds who watched thrilling displays of skill and agility between the Saker falcons and homing pigeons. Competitions are set to continue today, with the Tal’ah Championship qualifiers in the morning and the second round of the Hudd Challenge in the afternoon. 

The activities of the 17th edition of Qatar International Falcons and Hunting Festival (Marmi 2026) will start on Thursday, Jan 1, and will continue until Jan 24 at Sabkhat Marmi in the Sealine area.The festival is held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, and it is supported by the Social and Sports Activities Support Fund 'Daam'.Muteb al-Qahtani, director of Championships at the Al-Qannas Qatari Society and chairman of the Marmi Festival, revealed that the Hadd Al-Tahaddi Championship will signal the launch of the festival on the evening of Jan 1, 2026, with the first group.He explained that the championship is dedicated to Shaheen falcon chicks, where a homing pigeon and a falcon are released. If the falcon manages to catch or corner the pigeon at a specific location, it is declared the winner and falconer is awarded QR100,000, in addition to qualifying for the final to compete for a Lexus car. He noted that the number of groups in the Hadd Al-Tahaddi Championship for this edition is 18.He added that the Hadd Al-Tahaddi Championship will continue with the second group on the following day, Jan 2. On the same day, the qualifying rounds of the Tal’a Championship for groups 1 to 5 will begin in the morning.He explained that the championship features 30 groups and is based on the falcon’s visual strength in spotting prey, as a houbara bustard is placed 2km from the falcon’s location. The falcon that launches first, lands, and captures the prey qualifies. On Jan 3, the qualifiers for groups six to 10 will take place, while in the evening, the Promising Falconer Championship will be held in parallel with the qualifying rounds of the Saluki Race Championship.The chairman of the Marmi Festival noted that the organising committee opened online registration for promising falconers on Dec 25 which will continue until 11pm on Jan 1, pointing out that the championship is open to the 6–15 age group. The competition will be in the Da’w event over a distance of 200m for the following categories: Tab’a and Shawayhina (wild or bred), and Qarmousha, Koubaj, and Wokri (wild or bred).Al-Qahtani further stated that the Tal’a Championship qualifiers for groups 11 to 15 will take place on Jan 4, groups 16 to 20 on Jan 5, groups 21 to 25 on Jan 6, and groups 26 to 30 on Jan 7.Immediately after the completion of the Tal’a Championship qualifiers, a draw will be conducted to determine the dates of the upcoming final rounds.In addition, al-Qahtani explained that the Hadd Al-Tahaddi Championship will resume with Group 3 on Jan 4, Group 4 (Jan 5), Group 5 (Jan 6), Group 6 (Jan 7), Group 7 (Jan 8), Group 8 (Jan 9), Group 9 (Jan 10), Group 10 (Jan 11), Group 11 (Jan 12), Group 12 (Jan 13), Group 13 (Jan 14), Group 14 (Jan 15), Group 15 (Jan 16), Group 16 (Jan 18), Group 17 (Jan 19), and Group 18 (Jan 20).He further noted that the Local Da’w Championship will be held on Jan 13. He explained that this competition measures the speed of falcons flying from the starting point to the finish line over a distance of 400m, which is a local distance.He added that the Local Da’w Championship will begin on Jan 13 morning for the categories of Gyr-Shaheen chick and locally bred free falcon chick, followed by local production in all categories. On Jan 14, qualifiers will be held for the Gyr Qarnass and free falcon chick categories, while on Jan 15, qualifiers will be held for the Gyr-Shaheen Qarnass and Shaheen Qarnass categories. The Local Da’w finals will conclude with the Gyr chick and free falcon Qarnass categories on the morning of Jan 16.He pointed out that the Saluki Race Championship final will take place on the evening of Saturday, Jan 17.He also noted that the Local Da’w final for all categories will be held on the morning of Jan 19, while the International Da’w final will take place on Jan 20. He said registration details and categories for the international event will be announced soon.Al-Qahtani added that the Hadd Al-Tahaddi Championship final will be held on the evening of Jan 23, while the Mazayin Championship (Falcon Beauty contest) will take place on Jan 24.The festival aims to preserve the cultural and emotional values of this sport inherited from forefathers, in addition to its importance in Arab folk heritage literature, particularly in the Gulf and Qatari context.

The Civil Services and Government Development Bureau, represented by the Institute of Public Administration, has launched the National Training and Career Development Plan for 2026, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the human development system and enhance the efficiency of human capital in the government sector.On this occasion, Director of the Institute of Public Administration Maha Al Marri affirmed that the National Training and Career Development Plan for 2026 embodies a strategic approach to building human capital within the government, in line with the Third National Development Strategy, through an integrated competency-based training system aimed at achieving tangible impact at the level of institutional performance. She added that the Institute of Public Administration is working to create a supportive environment for the effective implementation of the plan, in partnership with government entities, thereby enhancing institutional excellence in the State of Qatar.The new national plan comes in response to a fundamental shift in the state's vision for training and career development. It is based on the recent amendments to certain provisions of the Executive Regulation of Civil Human Resources, and reflects a transition from training linked to job grade to training linked to competencies and their levels. This shift contributes to enhancing the effectiveness of training programs and directly linking them to performance evaluation outcomes and individual development plans.The plan is built on a competency-based professional development methodology, through flexible training programs that include in-person training and asynchronous e-learning. It also allows employees to choose programs aligned with their career paths across three main tracks: leadership, specialized, and technical and clerical roles. These tracks cover behavioral, leadership, and technical competencies across four levels-beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert-within an integrated career development framework that combines training, performance evaluation, and career planning.

His Excellency the Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi led Qatar’s delegation at the 115th Ministerial Council meeting of the Organisation of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) held in Kuwait. The meeting addressed a number of issues related to the OAPEC’s work in addition to the 2026 draft budget and the ongoing project to develop its work, reorganise its activities, and launch a new identity. OAPEC was established in 1968 and is headquartered in Kuwait. 

His Excellency the Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari revealed Wednesday key features of the State of Qatar's General Budget for the year 2026, including sectoral expenditure distribution, government contracting plans, and the financing of the Third National Development Strategy.During the press conference, held on the occasion of the announcement of the 2026 State Budget on Tuesday, he presented a comprehensive overview of the expected economic indicators for the current year 2025, along with several initiatives by the Ministry of Finance to empower and engage the Qatari private sector.HE the Minister of Finance affirmed that the new budget represents a continuation of the balanced fiscal approach adopted by the State, aiming to achieve financial sustainability, enhance economic growth, improve public spending efficiency, and provide an investment-friendly environment, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.HE al-Kuwari stated that the total expenditure for the 2026 budget amounts to QR220.8bn, distributed as follows: QR69.5bn allocated for salaries and wages, QR81.5bn for current expenditures, QR7bn for minor capital expenditures, and QR62.8bn for major capital expenditures.In his review of the main sector allocations in the new budget, he noted that the education sector is allocated QR21.8bn, while the health sector receives QR25.4bn, up from QR22bn in 2025. This reflects the state's continued commitment to developing human capital and improving the quality of public services.He explained that the municipality and environment sector is allocated QR22.2bn, the sports sector QR7.6bn, commercial affairs QR4.1bn, transportation QR4.1bn, communications QR3.8bn, and social services QR2.8bn, reflecting a balanced distribution of spending across vital sectors.HE the Minister of Finance pointed out that the total expected revenues for the 2026 fiscal year amount to QR199bn (QR155bn from oil and gas revenues, and QR44bn from non-oil revenues), compared to total revenues of QR197bn in 2025 (QR154bn from oil revenues and QR43bn from non-oil revenues).This reflects an improvement in oil revenues and continued growth in non-oil revenues, attributed to the state's continued conservative approach in estimating oil and gas revenues, based on an average oil price of $55 per barrel, to enhance financial flexibility and ensure spending stability.Regarding the government contracting plan for 2026, His Excellency highlighted key sectors, noting that the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) plans to issue tenders worth QR49bn, the Ministry of Public Health QR2.6bn, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corp (Kahramaa) QR7.2bn, and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education QR2.3bn.He explained that the total number of tenders offered to the private sector amounts to approximately 4,464 tenders with an estimated value exceeding QR70bn, as part of the 2026 Government Procurement Plan Forum, reflecting the state's direction toward enhancing public-private partnerships.In this context, His Excellency referred to several initiatives by the Ministry of Finance to empower and engage the private sector, including a review of the state's infrastructure projects for the next five years to assess their feasibility for private sector implementation, and transferring suitable projects to the relevant committee at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.Work is also underway to issue a mandatory list of national products that government entities must purchase, giving priority to national products in government procurement.The first phase is expected to include more than 1,000 national products. At the same time, the ministry aims for an annual growth rate of no less than 10% in the value of local content in government procurement, with the actual annual growth rate exceeding the target, resulting in a national economic impact of QR9bn during 2025.While reviewing the initiatives and projects of the Third National Development Strategy for the period 2024-2030, His Excellency revealed an allocation of approximately QR32.7bn for its implementation.He explained that the strategy is based on seven national strategic outcomes, including sustainable economic growth (QR10.8bn), outstanding government institutions (QR3.1bn), environmental sustainability (QR0.9bn), financial sustainability (QR1.3bn), a future-ready workforce (QR0.9bn), a cohesive society (QR0.6bn), and high quality of life (QR4bn).HE al-Kuwari confirmed that Qatar's credit rating is among the best in the region and the world, reflecting confidence in the Qatari economy.He noted that fiscal discipline is one of the main pillars of the country's high credit rating, in addition to the continued enhancement of human resource efficiency, strengthening of financial reserves, expenditure control, and sound strategic planning to deal with crises.In his remarks on key economic indicators for the current year, HE the Minister of Finance stated that the GDP growth rate is expected to reach 2.9% according to IMF estimates, with non-hydrocarbon GDP growing by 4.4% and hydrocarbon GDP by 0.1%.He explained that the annual inflation rate for the year through last October is expected to be 0.7%, one of the lowest rates in the region, with expectations that inflation will remain low in the medium term.He also noted that Qatar received 4.4mn tourists by the end of November.
