Qatar's Ministry of Municipality has arranged a series of awareness and community programs to mark World Cleanup Day 2026, designed to promote public cleanliness and environmental awareness and sustainability.The activities take place from September 13 to 19 and bring together government and private-sector organizations as well as volunteers and members of the community.As part of the program, the ministry's Public Cleanliness Department held an event attended by over 300 students from different education levels.The event featured interactive workshops, cultural competitions and gifts, focusing on waste sorting and recycling.Meanwhile, Al Dhaayen and Al Rayyan municipalities, in collaboration with the Public Cleanliness Department, have organized beach-cleaning campaigns at Semaisma and Abu Samra beaches. Organizers said the initiatives aimed to raise awareness of the importance of keeping beaches and public facilities clean, promote a culture of community responsibility and encourage people to take part in protecting natural resources.

A cruise ship that will house thousands of athletes at the Asian Games arrived in Japan on Tuesday as complaints over accommodation at the multi-sport event grew louder.The Italian cruise ship Costa Serena docked in Nagoya, where the Games are taking place until October 4.Around 4,000 athletes and officials will be housed on the ship, which is almost 300m long, weighs over 100,000 tonnes and has 1,500 cabins.More than 17,000 athletes and officials are expected at the Games, which officially open on Saturday, a bigger number than the Olympics.Participants will also stay in wooden container-style huts and standard hotel rooms in a bid to cut costs.South Korean officials said earlier this week that the container hut rooms were the "worst ever" and claimed on Tuesday that concerns had been shared by every team at the Games.Local organising committee president Hideaki Omura said the temporary accommodation could be a model for hosting financially sustainable sporting events."This is the first time in Japan that a cruise ship is being used as accommodation for a big international sporting event," Omura said at a ceremony to welcome the cruise ship to Nagoya."We're happy that we can provide a new type of accommodation for a large-scale event like this."Cruise ships have been used previously as accommodation at international sporting events, but never on this scale.Jung Jae-yong, vice president of the Korea Basketball Association, told AFP he was deeply unhappy with the cabins where the men's basketball team are staying.He said beds were too small for the athletes, and a player from the team posted a video on social media showing a leaking sink and soaked floor in his hut.He posted the caption: "Please help us".Hundreds of athletes were briefly evacuated from their accommodation last week as record rainfall lashed Nagoya causing flooding.- 'Shortage of beds' -A South Korean Olympic committee official said there was "a serious shortage" of rooms and they were not alone in finding the accommodation lacking."Concerns over the accommodations have been shared by all representatives of the 45 nations competing in the games," a South Korean Sports and Olympic Committee official told AFP on Tuesday."Every country involved is now working together to resolve the issue."A Taiwanese sport official said there was "a general shortage of beds".Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino said all his country's athletes had been given a room.But "some officials, like coaches, were moved to different hotels and Airbnbs".Organisers are hoping there will be fewer complaints about the cruise ship, despite the Games taking place during Japan's typhoon season.Organisers said earlier this year that the vessel was being chartered at a cost of about 4.5 billion yen ($28 million).It is a sister ship of the Costa Concordia, which sank off Tuscany in 2012, killing 32 people.Costa Serena captain Federico Sias said he hoped the athletes would have a "comfortable, safe and memorable stay".He added: "Today, our ship becomes more than a destination."It becomes a home where athletes and guests from across Asia can come together in the spirit of friendship, mutual respect and unity."

Accommodation at the Asian Games starting this week in Japan is the "worst ever", South Korean officials told AFP on Monday, also warning of "a serious shortage" of rooms. Beds in shipping container-style huts are too short for players to stretch out, a South Korean basketball chief said, while officials from the Philippines resorted to Airbnb.There is no dedicated athletes' village at the Games, with organisers instead relying on a cruise ship, temporary wooden cabins and hotels in a bid to cut costs. The Games in the city of Nagoya and Aichi prefecture officially open on Saturday but football and basketball is already under way. Jung Jae-yong, vice president of the Korea Basketball Association, told AFP he was deeply unhappy with the cabins where the men's basketball team are staying."Based on my experience this is the worst it has ever been," he said. "Athletes who are over two metres tall cannot even stretch their legs out on the beds. It's unreasonable." Byeon Jun-hyeong, from the basketball team, posted a video on social media showing a leaking sink and soaked floor in his hut.He posted the caption, "Please help us".The huts are set to be home to 2,000 athletes and officials over the more than two weeks of the Games. Indian sports chiefs are so worried about the cabins that they built replicas to help get their athletes used to them.The vice president Jung accused organisers of failing to respond to South Korea's concerns. "The organisers have still not said anything," said Jung."We are very concerned and discussing extensively with the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee what to do about this."Hundreds of athletes were briefly evacuated from their accommodation last week as record rainfall lashed Nagoya.More rain has been forecast in the coming days. - 'Serious shortage' - More than 17,000 athletes and officials are expected at the Games -- a bigger number than the Olympics.Local organisers were initially expecting 15,000 and argued last month that they had "neither the manpower nor the budget" to deal with ballooning numbers.The Olympic Council of Asia later said that everyone would get a place to stay.Star cricketers have voiced fears about a lack of top-notch hotels. A South Korean Olympic committee official told AFP that, with the Games just days away, there are problems."At the moment there is a serious shortage of accommodation not only for the entire South Korean delegation to the Asian Games, but for delegations from around the world in the Aichi-Nagoya area," the official said. "We are doing everything we can to resolve the issue and ensure there are no such problems."Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino told AFP that all his country's athletes had been given a room.But "some officials, like coaches, were moved to different hotels and Airbnb". Asian Games organisers did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.The Italian cruise ship Costa Serena is due to arrive in Nagoya on Tuesday. Between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes will stay on the vessel.The rest will be in hotels, including in Tokyo, where swimming, diving and equestrian events will take place. 

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE)’s Educational Training and Development Centre has launched its annual training season for administrative and academic staff, coinciding with the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year. Accordingly, the centre has resumed professional licensing programmes for teachers, which account for around 50% of its total training portfolio. The initiative aims to enhance professional competencies, support career advancement and improve educational performance across government schools and ministry departments. Abdulrahman Jassim al-Baker, head of the centre’s Educational Training Department, said the centre had completed extensive logistical and training preparations to accommodate school leaders, teaching staff, administrative employees, and ministry personnel. Within two weeks of the training season’s launch, more than 1,000 participants had attended courses across around 80 training rooms. The centre offers a diverse collection of strategic, specialised, and elective programmes aligned with the ministry’s priorities and Qatar’s Third National Development Strategy. Courses cover subjects such as science, mathematics, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and modern communication skills. The programmes are designed to empower employees, support career progression and prepare staff for new professional roles. The centre has trained more than 33,000 participants in previous years and aims to expand its reach this academic year while maintaining high-quality training. Al-Baker noted that professional licensing remains a key component of the centre’s activities, as these programmes run throughout the academic year across both semesters, ensuring continuous professional development for teachers from the beginning to the end of the school year. Training requirements vary by level, ranging from 60 hours for the first level, to 45 hours, 30 hours and 15 hours for the second, third and fourth levels, respectively. The centre co-ordinates closely with schools to prepare teachers’ schedules based on approved training dates, enabling participation during official working hours while ensuring training activities do not disrupt the continuity of school operations.

The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) is launching its 2026 Patient Safety Campaign, on September 17-23, as part of Qatar Patient Safety Week and in conjunction with World Patient Safety Day, observed annually on September 17.This year’s observance is held under the theme Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases and the global message Safe Care for Life, highlighting the importance of providing safe and continuous care for people living with noncommunicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and other conditions that require long-term follow-up and management.Dr Amal Abdullah al-Ali, the executive director of quality, patient safety and innovation at the PHCC, emphasised that patient safety is a strategic priority for the corporation.She noted that improving the safety of care for people living with noncommunicable diseases requires a genuine partnership between patients and healthcare providers, alongside a sustained commitment to quality- and safety-based practices throughout the patient journey.Nawal Khattabi, the director of risk management, patient safety and patient engagement at the PHCC, said that the campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of prevention, early detection, regular follow-up and adherence to treatment plans.It also seeks, she said, to empower patients to play an active role as partners in their own healthcare safety, helping reduce risks, improve health outcomes, and enhance quality of life.PHCC health centres are hosting a series of awareness activities and events alongside the campaign, including educational booths for patients and visitors, workshops and training programmes for healthcare professionals, and educational and digital materials shared through PHCC’s social media platforms.These activities aim to promote awareness of patient safety and best practices in chronic disease management.The campaign also features interactive competitions and daily awareness messages targeting different community segments.In addition, PHCC headquarters and several PHCC health centres will be illuminated in orange, the internationally recognised colour of World Patient Safety Day.
