Qatar is repositioning its autonomous and electric mobility industry from a series of pilot programmes into a full-scale regional manufacturing and export hub.
The shift aligns with a broader national strategy to become a leading destination for advanced transit technologies under the Qatar National Vision 2030, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) noted.
The MoT noted that it is coordinating this growth through its five-year Autonomous Vehicle Strategy, which integrates smart transit into the national network. A notable achievement in this strategy is the recent success of driverless robotaxi trials, which reported a 94% success rate during their initial commercial phase, the MoT explained.
Mohammed Jassim al-Shaibani, who is the head of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety at the MoT, recently stated in an interview with Qatar Television that these vehicles are equipped with advanced sensors and LiDAR technology.
He noted that these technologies allow the vehicles to monitor their surroundings and make safe driving decisions without human intervention. The project has now progressed to its second phase, where the safety officer previously seated in the vehicle has been removed in favour of remote monitoring, al-Shaibani pointed out.
The Qatar Free Zones Authority (QFZ) stated that its free zones are currently acting as a central base for international firms to develop, test, and implement vehicles for both local and overseas markets.
The QFZ also noted that companies such as Gaussin from France and Yutong from China, among other global firms, have already established operations in the zones to assemble electric and autonomous vehicles.
These assembly units serve a vast regional market that includes Turkey, India, and parts of Africa, reaching more than 2bn people, according to QFZ. To support these activities, QFZ provides a dedicated 1.2km outdoor testing track that simulates real-world environments for vehicle validation.
Ensuring that electric vehicles remain operational in Qatar’s extreme heat is a priority for local researchers, the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) stated. In 2022, QEERI partnered with Mowasalat (Karwa) to conduct rigorous battery cell testing to improve performance and safety.
The upcoming Autonomous e-Mobility Forum 2026, slated for September 7 to 9 in Doha, will serve as a platform for global experts to discuss these regulatory standards, according to organisers.
Qatar’s robust physical infrastructure is being built with autonomous transit in mind, supported by a world-class 5G network that covers 70% of the country, according to official figures.
The MoT emphasised that ultimately, these efforts form a core pillar of the Transportation Master Plan for Qatar-2050, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve the quality of life for residents.
The plan, the ministry added, is expected to generate measurable economic benefits by shortening travel times and lowering traffic accident rates across the country.
