HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Dr. Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad met on Wednesday with the Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa in Doha Ghulam Hoosein Asmal.The meeting discussed bilateral cooperation relations and ways to support and strengthen them, in addition to discussing a number of issues of mutual concern.

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi received His Excellency Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and his accompanying delegation at Muscat International Airport Tuesday, at the start of an official working visit to Oman.The visit comes as Doha and Muscat — two Gulf capitals that have long favoured quiet diplomacy over confrontation — look to deepen a partnership that has steadily gained weight amid a turbulent regional landscape. Both have carved out reputations as careful mediators, and their alignment on questions of de-escalation and dialogue has lent their co-operation a significance beyond the bilateral.The visit reflects the close fraternal ties between Oman and Qatar and aims to strengthen co-operation and co-ordination across a range of areas of mutual interest. 

Qatar Free Zones Authority (QFZ) CEO Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Faisal al-Thani held a meeting with Chinese ambassador Cao Xiaolin on Monday to discuss bilateral co-operation in the field of investment attraction between Qatar and China.The meeting also highlighted the investment opportunities and outstanding benefits offered by QFZ and supported by the country’s advanced infrastructure. The visit was followed by an introductory tour in the Business Innovation Park at Ras Bufontas Free Zone. 

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani held talks Friday with Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, Ignazio Cassis, at the Burgenstock Resort in Switzerland. They discussed bilateral relations and ways to support and strengthen co-operation, as well as the latest regional developments, particularly diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting security and stability in the region, following a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran. HE Sheikh Mohammed affirmed Doha's support for launching negotiations between the US and Iran to reach sustainable solutions to outstanding issues through dialogue and peaceful means. He added such efforts would enhance regional security, open new horizons for cooperation, development, and prosperity, and serve the common interests of peoples in the region and the world.  

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani sent a written message to Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam pertaining to bilateral relations and ways to support and enhance them.  The message was delivered by Qatar’s ambassador to Singapore Abdulaziz bin Ahmed al-Malki during his meeting with the director-general of the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia Directorate at Singapore's foreign affairs ministry, Jeevan Singh.

His Excellency Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the State of Qatar, Arman Issagaliyev, on the occasion of the end of his tenure. HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs extended thanks to the Ambassador for his efforts in supporting and strengthening bilateral relations, wishing him success in his new duties.

Chinese President Xi Jinping Tuesday endorsed the ​political leadership of Myanmar's military chief-turned-president ‌Min Aung Hlaing as the two met in Beijing to map out the ‌future development of ⁠bilateral ties.Beijing prioritises ‌its ties with Naypyitaw as part of ‌its diplomacy strategy with neighbouring nations, Chinese state news agency Xinhua cited Xi as saying in the ⁠meeting, affirming his support for the current Myanmar government's efforts for its country's development and security."I am willing to continue strengthening our leadership (over our countries' bilateral ties), carry forward the brotherly friendship between our two peoples, deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation," Xi told Min Aung Hlaing, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. The former junta chief is in China for a five-day state visit until Friday, his first trip to the world's second-largest economy since he formalised his grip ​on power following controversial elections in the war-torn country in December and January.Xi also spoke about making greater contributions to regional peace and development through China's bilateral ties with Myanmar. The two countries share an almost 2,200-km (1,367-mile) land ‌border.Beijing, the biggest investor with ⁠the most visible strategic and ​economic footprint in Myanmar, has always been pragmatic in how it maintains ties ​with Naypyitaw, said Moe Thuzar, a senior fellow at ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute, a Singapore-based research centre."The current engagement is thus more about continuity...(and) takes a long-term perspective," she said.Beijing held a state welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People before the leaders began their talks in a closed-door meeting that lasted for less than an hour.The two men then witnessed the signing of co-operation documents, Chinese state news agency Xinhua said.The 18 memorandums for cooperation covered areas including cross-border transportation in the Greater Mekong subregion, free trade, assistance in natural disasters, health and media.STABILITY AND SECURITYChina remains one of the most ‌important foreign partners of Myanmar's military, which ‌seized power from the elected government of ⁠Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, triggering an armed uprising.China reiterated its support for ⁠unifying domestic political forces and restoring stability ⁠in Myanmar, saying it also reflected the Southeast Asian nation's long-term national interests."China supports all parties in Myanmar advancing peace and reconciliation through dialogue, achieving lasting stability in northern Myanmar," Xi told his guest, according to Xinhua.Xi also called on both sides to advance key infrastructure projects with ensured security, framing their progress as beneficial to Myanmar's economic development.Beijing has invested in projects in Myanmar under its ​Belt and Road Initiative, including an oil and gas pipeline crossing the country and planned infrastructure including a deep-sea port, which are part of the massive China-Myanmar Economic Corridor connecting the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan to the Indian Ocean.Many of the projects, located in active combat zones, have faced threats and attacks since the coup.The meeting is Min Aung Hlaing's second with Xi in less than a year, after he attended the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation summit in Tianjin last August.While Min Aung Hlaing picked India for his first foreign trip after becoming president, some analysts said ‌the visits to China suggested ​a closer relationship with Beijing and a boost to his international acceptance. 

His Excellency the Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh al-Khulaifi met in Riyadh Monday with Saudi Arabia’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Eng. Waleed bin Abdulkarim El-Khereiji.  They reviewed bilateral relations and ways to support and strengthen them in various fields, and discussed the latest developments in the region, particularly the agreement reached between the US and Iran, as well as the latest developments in Syria, Sudan, and Somalia.  They expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached between the US and Iran to cease military operations and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, deeming it an important step towards consolidating sustainable peace and promoting economic growth regionally and internationally.

Japan's Prime ​Minister Sanae Takaichi said Monday she hopes a long delayed project ‌to build a ⁠bridge across ‌Italy's Strait of Messina will ‌get off the ground soon and showcase bilateral co-operation, given the involvement ⁠of Japanese companies.The project to construct a 3.7-km (2.3-mile) bridge between the Sicilian city of Messina and mainland Italy is led by the Eurolink consortium, which includes Italy's largest construction group Webuild, Japan's IHI and Spain's Sacyr. But it has been held back for years by a number ​of problems, including criticism that a bridge could harm the environment and pose risks in an earthquake-prone area.In 2012, the project was halted ‌under a government austerity drive, ⁠prompting the ​consortium to file a €700mn ($811mn) compensation claim that ​will only be withdrawn if work resumes."I sincerely hope that the construction project for the Messina Strait Bridge, in which Japanese companies are participating, will become a landmark project symbolising economic co-operation between our two countries," Takaichi said during a visit to Rome.She was speaking alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after they held talks at the 17th-century Villa Doria Pamphili ahead of a Group of Seven (G7) summit ‌in France, which they will ‌both attend."I also hope ⁠that Japan's expertise and experience will contribute to its early ⁠realisation," Takaichi added.Meloni's ⁠government argues that improved road and rail links are essential to boost economic growth in Italy's underdeveloped south. Sicily is currently connected to the mainland by ferries that carry vehicles and trains.However, work on the bridge — estimated at around €13.5bn — is unlikely to ​begin soon.Italy's Court of Auditors last year declined to approve the project, citing doubts about its compliance with European Union competition rules and noting that the original 2005 tender priced it at just 3.8bn euros.In addition, prosecutors in Rome last week said they had opened a corruption probe into the bridge, casting fresh doubts over government efforts to push the ‌project forward. 

His Excellency the Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah al-Attiyah met Monday with Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Qatar Arman Issagaliyev. They discussed the two countries' bilateral relations and means to bolster them in the areas of agriculture, food security, and municipal twinning. 

US President Donald Trump will take part in a G7 working session with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in France on Tuesday, but no bilateral meeting between the two is scheduled, a senior administration official said."On Tuesday morning, President Trump will participate in a working session with G7 leaders and President Zelensky of Ukraine," the official told reporters Saturday on the customary condition of anonymity.The G7 summit will take place in Evian on June 15-17, and Trump is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings on its sidelines with French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and India, the official said.Trump is also scheduled to dine at the Versailles palace west of Paris with Macron on Wednesday evening, after the summit wraps up.The dinner is a way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence in a "landmark of Franco-American friendship where the treaty establishing the independence of the US was signed in 1783," according to Macron's office.Trump has shifted his attention away from efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February, igniting another conflict that has been under a fragile ceasefire since April."Obviously, President Zelensky is gonna be at the session that we're doing. They very well may meet with each other on the sidelines," the official said, stressing that a formal bilateral meeting was not currently on Trump's G7 agenda.The official said the 79-year-old billionaire Republican was the "only" world leader capable of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, but did not elaborate.The status of US-Iran talks aimed at ending the Middle East war will be a dominant concern at the G7 summit.One topic of discussion among attendees could be the participation of France and Britain in mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the senior administration official.The waterway off Iran, a critical trade route for oil and fertilizer, has been largely closed to shipping due to the war.The US official sought to downplay tensions between Trump and his allies regarding the US commitment to Nato — an alliance whose leaders will be well-represented in France."When we have private conversations with the governments of our Nato allies... it's a very easy conversation. It's not at all as its kind of hysterically presented in the press," the official said."We are very happy with the some of the burden-shifting that's going on, and we need to see more of it."Another US official praised France for placing trade imbalances on the summit agenda — a central theme for Trump, who has launched a global protectionist offensive centered on aggressive import tariffs on friends and foes alike.According to the White House, the US president intends to discuss artificial intelligence, immigration, innovation, and energy with his partners. The G7 comprises Germany, Canada, the US, France, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.Trump has advocated for including Russia and thereby restoring the former G8 format.
