He added that this certainly adds to Qatar's credit, which was at the forefront of the worlds countries in supporting the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations initiative.Regarding the cooperation agreement between QU and the Qatar Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations for the 2025-2029 period, His Excellency stressed that the Committee looks forward to continuing cooperation with QU in various aspects and fields. His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received Sunday Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who is on a visit to Qatar.Discussions during the meeting dealt with the two countries' strategic relations and ways to further enhance them, in addition to key regional and international developments.

HE Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi highlighted the most prominent achievements of the State of Qatar in the LNG and renewable energy sectors as well as its contributions to achieving global food security through fertilizer production.His Excellency highlighted QatarEnergy's LNG expansion projects that will double its production capacity to 142 million tons per annum, add to that 18 million tons from its project in Golden Pass project in Texas, in the USA.In remarks during a "Newsmaker Interview" as part of the Doha Forum 2024, held in Doha, His Excellency also discussed the role of gas in the energy transition stressing that "it will play a very big role" citing intermittency issues when the sun is not shining to power solar panels, or the wind is not blowing to drive wind farms, or lower rain levels fails to boost hydro power.Al Kaabi highlighted Qatars contributions towards global food security through the production of much needed fertilizers. "Today, we are the second largest fertilizer exporter in the world. We are doubling our production to 12 million tons per annum, which will make us the largest fertilizer producer in the world." Also, a point to highlight during the interview was the environment, which His Excellency stressed was an utmost importance for QatarEnergy. "we are big believers in making sure that we have clean air and clean water for everybody living in Qatar and around the world. A few years ago, we had zero renewables in Qatar. Today, 10% of the power that we are enjoying comes from solar. Next year, it will go up with another two plants that we are going to inaugurate in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan taking the total solar production to about 15% to 16%. With the addition of a fourth plant in Dukhan, we will increase our solar capacity making it 30% of our total power production.

South Korean prosecutors arrested former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on Sunday amid a probe into alleged treason following President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law last week.The special investigation headquarters probing the political turmoil said it has arrested Kim and seized his mobile phone. Kim has been sent to a detention center in eastern Seoul, Yonhap News Agency reported.His arrest came about six hours after he showed up for an overnight questioning by the special investigation headquarters, saying he will actively cooperate with the ongoing investigation.Kim suggested the implementation of martial law to President Yoon Suk Yeol, who declared it late Tuesday amid an intensifying political deadlock with the opposition-controlled National Assembly. The president reversed the order six hours later after the Assembly voted to end it.Kim tendered his resignation, and Yoon accepted it Thursday.Prosecutors are believed to have arrested Kim considering the gravity of his charges and concerns over the possibility of the former defense chief destroying evidence.Speculation that Kim may attempt to destroy evidence rose after he was found to have joined Telegram again after deleting his previous account. The prosecution is expected to restore previous conversations he had on the messaging platform.By law, suspects can be arrested without a warrant if there are considerable grounds for believing a serious crime has been committed or when there are concerns over a possible attempt to destroy evidence.The special investigation headquarters plans to seek a warrant for Kim's formal arrest within 48 hours of his detention. If prosecutors fail to apply for a warrant or the court rejects it, Kim will be released immediately.

Today, the multiplicity of poles confirms that everyone has no choice but for countries to cooperate with each other, small and medium-sized countries in particular, to work towards providing peace and stability for future generations, he said.Al Ansari explained that the concept of sovereignty is different today than it was decades ago, and it now requires taking regional interests into account in decision-making alongside national interests.The participants in the discussion session stressed that the geopolitical challenges facing the world today require new thinking and a different diplomatic approach, such as flexible and comprehensive strategies, taking advantage of advanced technologies, and applying creative solutions, unlike traditional diplomacy that often relies on formal protocols, bilateral negotiations, and promoting specific ideologies.They pointed out that the innovative approach to diplomacy goes beyond divisions and conflicts and focuses on adopting diverse ideas, digital platforms, and cooperative initiatives aimed at enhancing dialogue and exchange of views to achieve the common goals and interests of countries, in a way that enhances transparency, integrity, and participatory governance. They called for empowering non-state actors, facilitating rapid communication and information exchange, and enabling a more flexible response to crises, including humanitarian emergencies, peacebuilding efforts, climate change, global health threats, economic development, and others.They called for reforming many international and UN institutions such as redistributing votes fairly in the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, and other institutions, in a way that serves the interests of all, with a focus on increasing work and coordination to achieve everything that would provide the best for the peoples of the world.They stressed the importance of small and medium-sized countries in the world today, especially since solutions often come from these countries, which calls for not prioritizing competition among them, but rather strengthening partnerships and cooperation to achieve the desired goals.

The First Lady of Türkiye Emine Erdogan has reiterated the appeal for ceasefire in Gaza while speaking on the topic of United for Peace in Palestine, at Doha Forum 2024 Saturday.She said that the conflict in Gaza has been ongoing for over 14 months.“We are witnessing one of the most merciless attacks in the history of humanity, which has been committed against the common conscience of humanity and the dignity of humanity for 14 months,” she pointed out. “A country and its culture are targeted to be erased from history. I want to raise it on behalf of everyone who has a conscience.”“For the sake of the innocent people who we can still save today, let us now call for a ceasefire,” Erdogan said. “Let me reiterate the call for a ceasefire.”She raised questions about the ongoing brutalities in Gaza.“The war has killed more than 44,000 civilians brutally, bombed hospitals, schools, shrines, even orphanages,” Erdogan said. “A good percentage of the dead were aged 18 years old or less. Qatar has stressed the need for the UN General Assembly to shoulder its responsibility in accordance with the UN Charter towards the Palestinian cause, calling for support for the two draft resolutions that will be submitted to the General Assembly for adoption on December 11, which reflect common humanitarian values and obligations, and are consistent with the purposes of the Charter.This also meets the requirements of maintaining international peace and security, as their adoption represents the minimum duty to respond to the suffering of Palestinian victims.This came in the statement delivered by HE Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, before the 10th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly, item five of the agenda — illegal Israeli actions in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories, at the UN headquarters in New York.HE Sheikha Alya explained that the first draft resolution calls for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire to which all parties are committed, while the second draft calls for supporting the mandate of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in light of the existential crisis it is suffering from, especially since it represents an indispensable lifeline for the Palestinian people.She stressed the need to support the mandate granted to the agency in accordance with UN resolutions.HE Sheikha Alya noted that unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip has worsened due to the ongoing Israeli aggression for more than a year, which extended to the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, pointing to the escalation of repeated Israeli attacks on the Palestinians, which increased the number of victims to more than 44,000, in addition to other violations in the occupied Palestinian territories, including the violation of religious sanctities and the expansion of settlements, which constitute a flagrant violation of international law, General Assembly resolutions, relevant Security Council resolutions, in addition to the interim orders of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and its advisory opinion issued last July.She indicated that there is an urgent need today to provide, introduce and distribute humanitarian assistance on a large scale throughout the Gaza Strip, in order to respond effectively to this humanitarian catastrophe, adding that Qatar welcomes the results and recommendations of the Cairo Ministerial Conference on Humanitarian Aid to Gaza, which was held on December 2, 2024, within the framework of unifying efforts to provide and deliver sufficient and continuous humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip, to alleviate the suffering of our Palestinian brothers.HE Sheikha Alya pointed out that since the beginning of the aggression on the Gaza Strip, Qatar has sought to make sincere mediation efforts in partnership with Egypt and the US with the aim of putting an end to the ongoing violence and the human suffering it entails for all parties, in addition to preventing the spread of repercussions to the region. The success of these diplomatic efforts were also noted in reaching a humanitarian truce and ceasefire in November of last year, through which prisoners and detainees were exchanged and the level of humanitarian aid was increased.She said that during the recent attempts to reach an agreement, Qatar informed the parties last month that it would suspend its mediation efforts if an agreement was not reached between Israel and Hamas during that round, and that it remains ready to resume those efforts with partners when the necessary seriousness is available.She reiterated, before the session, Qatar’s firm and historical position in support of the steadfastness of the brotherly Palestinian people and their just cause in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy and within the framework of the Arab Peace Initiative that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.With regard to the Israeli escalation in brotherly Lebanon, she voiced Qatar’s welcome of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, expressing hope that it will lead to a similar agreement to stop the ongoing war on the Gaza Strip and the Israeli attacks on the occupied West Bank.She added that Qatar expresses its aspiration for all parties to adhere to the agreement and immediately stop military operations, and fully implement Security Council Resolution 1701, and that this agreement will pave the way for a more comprehensive consensus that achieves lasting peace and complete stability in the region.She stressed that Qatar renews its firm position towards Lebanon, its unity and territorial integrity, and its continued support for its brotherly people, and expresses appreciation for the efforts of the US and France that contributed to reaching this agreement.

The Qatar University ExxonMobil STEM Teacher Academy (Questa) has concluded in Doha, thanks to the collaborative efforts and partnership of co-hosts the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), the National Educational Development Centre (NEDC) at Qatar University’s College of Education, and ExxonMobil Qatar.The academy’s closing ceremony was held at QU’s College of Education on December 5. Since its inception in 2012 under the name Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy (Quemta), the academy has been restructured to align with the vision and goals of the MoEHE and its 2024-2030 strategy, “Igniting the Spark of Learning,” which seeks to enhance and modernise Qatar’s national curriculum.Questa brings together teachers from across Qatar, equipping them with innovative instructional practices and strategies for teaching and learning STEM through science and math curricula. This initiative aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy, which aim to increase the percentage of STEM graduates from 10% to 18%, fostering a skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth and promoting innovation in the country.Questa’s educational journey for teachers spans two phases. The first, held in November 2024, comprised a comprehensive series of training workshops totalling 42 hours, led by NEDC. These interactive sessions aimed to deepen teachers’ understanding of the integrative STEM approach, equipping them with essential skills and teaching practices to foster classroom implementation. The second phase will focus on field training during the second semester of the academic year 2024-2025, allowing teachers to apply the knowledge and skills acquired directly in their classrooms, supported through individual mentoring sessions by NEDC to enhance teachers’ self-efficacy.This year, 60 teachers from Grades 7-8 across 30 preparatory schools in Qatar participated in the academy, including 10 teachers from Teach For Qatar. Participants explored effective methods for planning and implementing various STEM projects, including engineering design processes, project-based learning, problem-based learning, and inquiry-based learning. The 17th edition of Luxor International Photography Forum, organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, concluded. The forum, which began on November 26, featured the notable participation of Qatari artist Ibtisam al-Saffar alongside 24 other artists from various Arab and foreign countries. Egyptian Minister of Culture Dr Ahmed Fouad Hano honoured Ibtisam al-Saffar and the participating artists during the closing ceremony. The event included the inauguration of an exhibition showcasing their works, where the minister expressed his gratitude for their contributions in highlighting the beauty of Luxor as a historic art capital for thousands of years. The forum celebrated a profound artistic dialogue that bridged heritage and modern art, reflecting the diversity of cultures. Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Ibtisam al-Saffar shared that she presented two paintings during the forum. These works, centered on water and lakes, were created using the expressive abstract style, incorporating acrylic colours and mixed media techniques. She described the forum as an excellent opportunity to emphasize the theme, which she is currently exploring. Her works embodied the natural landscapes along the River Nile and the spiritual impact of her visits to Luxor's temples and significant archaeological museums. Al-Saffar highlighted her efforts to exchange ideas and engage in cultural dialogue with artists from around the world during the forum. She emphasized the importance of promoting values of tolerance and coexistence while introducing Qatari visual art and its role in raising awareness and fostering cultural interaction with global communities. The Luxor International Photography Forum aims to provide artists from around the world with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich natural and historical landscapes of Egypt. It seeks to inspire visual and intellectual expression in their artistic creations, reflecting harmony, love, and fraternity, while fostering dialogue and collaboration among nations.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) organised an awareness workshop for the members of Nomas Center under the Ministry of Culture on the various types of wild plants in the local environment. The event at a camp within Al Sheehaniya City saw the participants taken on a field tour to explore such plants and identify them within the local surroundings. They were also introduced on how to take care of such plants. The workshop was supervised by the Environmental Awareness Section at the Public Relations and Communications Department in cooperation with the Wildlife Development Department at the MoECC.

Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has announced that Doha Metro recorded more than 200mn in ridership since the launch of its service in 2019. This new milestone underscores the growing public trust in the metro system among residents and visitors throughout the year, a statement said. It also highlights the metro’s vital role as an effective and reliable alternative for daily commuting and travelling during various events and occasions hosted by the country. Since its launch in May 2019 until January 2023, Doha Metro recorded over 100mn passengers. Initially, it took approximately 3.5 years to reach this milestone. However, the metro achieved the same milestone again in a record time of just under two years, reflecting a significant and rapid increase in passenger confidence in its services. Metro’s success is attributed to offering world-class transportation services that ensure a safe and reliable travel experience for all customers through an advanced network comprising 37 stations across three lines: Red, Gold, and Green. Over the past five years, Doha Metro has emerged as a cornerstone of Qatar’s success in hosting and organising more than 20 local, regional, and international sports events. These include prominent tournaments such as the Amir Cup Finals, the FIFA Arab Cup 2021, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, among others. During these major events, Qatar Rail implemented unprecedented operational plans to serve the fans and ensure customer safety while they were within the metro network. The metro network connects to most key destinations, activation areas, tourist attractions, and Hamad International Airport. The continued collaboration with partners such as the Ministry of Transport and Mowasalat company (Karwa) has enhanced integrated transport solutions including services such as the metrolink buses, metroexpress vans, and Park & Ride facilities. These enhanced First and Last Mile services play a key role in increasing metro patronage by providing multiple access options that make the journey to and from metro stations more convenient. In recent years, the metrolink service has expanded significantly, now covering 61 routes covering 30 metro stations, compared to just 13 routes in May 2019. Similarly, the metroexpress service currently serves 10 metro stations and 12 tram stations, a notable increase from just two stations when it was first launched in July 2019. The opening of the Lusail Tram network and the expansion of its services have significantly contributed to the integration of the two networks, connected via the Legtaifiya Station. This integration provides a seamless and efficient travel experience, allowing passengers to move between the metro and tram networks with ease, while accessing Lusail City and its key destinations. In terms of performance metrics and customer satisfaction indicators, Doha Metro has achieved remarkable results since its launch in May 2019 through November 2024. The overall customer satisfaction rate stands at an impressive 99.75%. The total incident frequency rate is just 0.01, reflecting the adherence to the highest global safety standards. Additionally, the metro achieved 99.85% service reliability, 99.64% punctuality, and 99.99% service availability. A survey conducted by Ipsos further highlights the public’s positive perception of Doha Metro. Approximately 90% of respondents consider Doha Metro a safe mode of transport that reduces traffic congestion, offers an environmentally friendly alternative, and ensures a convenient travel experience, particularly for individuals with disabilities.

The Foreign Ministers of a number of Arab countries met with their counterparts from the countries participating in the Astana Process, at the Sheraton Hotel in Doha on December 7, 2024, to discuss the situation in Syria, especially the recent developments. The meeting was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the State of Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Republic of Iraq from the Arab countries. The Foreign Ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Türkiye and representative of the Russian Federation from the Astana Process.The participants stressed in a joint statement regarding the recent events in Syria, that the continuation of the Syrian crisis constitutes a dangerous development for the safety of the country and regional and international security, which requires all parties to seek a political solution to the Syrian crisis that leads to end of military operations, and protection of civilians from the repercussions of this crisis. They also agreed on the importance of strengthening joint international efforts to increase humanitarian aid to the Syrian people, and ensuring its sustainable and unhindered access to all affectedareas.The Ministers stressed the need to stop military operations in preparation for launching a comprehensive political process, based on Security Council Resolution 2254, to put an end to the military escalation that leads to the shedding of more innocent and defenseless blood and prolonging the crisis, and to preserve the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria and to Protect it from slipping into chaos and terrorism and ensure the voluntary return of refugees and the displaced.The attendees stressed the importance to continue close consultation and coordination among them in order to contribute effectively to finding a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis, in a way that achieves the aspirations of the Syrian people for security, stability and justice, in addition to enhancing efforts aimed at consolidating security and stability in the region.At the end of the meeting, the attendees listened to a briefing from the UN Secretary- General's Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pederson, and affirmed their support for the UN efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis based on Security Council Resolution 2254.

Noted Palestinian activist Dr Mustafa Barghouti has called on the international community to impose sanctions and boycott Israel to end the genocide in Gaza. “Our demand is very clear. You want to claim that international law and humanitarian law exist, impose sanctions on Israel now. This is the only way to achieve the change,” the Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative, told Doha Forum Saturday.He was attending the panel discussion on 'Preventing Another Year of Tragedy in Palestine: Shaping a Way Forward' at the forum. He said Palestinians are the victims of global racism and colonialism.Moderated by Lyse Doucet, chief international correspondent and senior presenter, BBC News, the session had as other panellists Luis Gilberto Murillo Urrutia, Colombia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs; Diego Martínez Belío Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs; Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh KC, Senior Barrister at Matrix Chambers; and Daniel Levy: President, US/ Middle East Project (USMEP).The session discussed the longstanding disconnect between international law and approaches to the Palestine question. It analysed the consequential shift in the international legal reality that has not yet taken centre stage in diplomatic discourse.Barghouti said the crisis in Gaza raises the important questions of equality and impunity, enjoyed by Israel. Murillo, who termed the occupation genocide, noted that his country is doing its best for the Palestinian cause. More than 45,000 people have been killed with 70% of the victims being women and babies. We can’t allow this to happen in the 21st century,” he said noting that even journalists and humanitarian workers are not spared.The minister explained that his country is involved in the humanitarian aid for Gaza noting that flights were sent to Egypt and Lebanon to help the victims. He denounced the failure of the UN system to put an end to the crisis and noted the international system has failed to implement its decisions.

HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi met Saturday separately with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Honduras Eduardo Enrique Reina, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of Albania Igli Hassani, on the sidelines of the Doha Forum 2024. The two meetings dealt with discussing co-operation relations and ways to support and develop them were reviewed, in addition to a number of topics of joint interest.
