Horse fest an opportunity for artists to showcase skills

The activities accompanying the prestigious festival on the Katara Corniche are drawing a large number of visitors while showcasing the skills of local and international artists. The festival began on Thursday and continues until February 11. As part of KIAHF 2023, more than 30 events and activities are being held with participation from various countries. For instance, the 'Collectibles' exhibition for Arabian horses, being held in co-operation with the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum and Qatar National Library (QNL), is witnessing a large turnout. Another one, the 'Symphony of Authenticity' exhibition by artist Ali al-Mimar, is open at Building 47 with 17 paintings about horses. Like in the previous edition, the saddle-drawing competition has evoked a good response with a number of artists from the country and abroad taking part with enthusiasm. The popular competition has the participation of 30 artists and the winners will receive QR30,000, QR20,000 and QR10,000, respectively. “We are all enjoying the competition here and it’s a good opportunity for us,” said Qatari artist Abdullah al-Mutawah. “We try to exhibit our skills here, and the festival is an ideal venue to develop them,” Iraqi-American artist Diyar al-Asadi said, adding that he is painting on saddles for the first time. Russian artist Lyubov Jalladyan also hailed the festival, saying it lends a good opportunity to artists to showcase their skills. Similarly, Indian artist Mahesh Kumar said artists find a suitable space whenever Katara organises a festival. “It’s an honour to be here,” he added. The 'Collectibles' exhibition contains a section titled 'Arabian Horses in QNL's Heritage Collection', which present items on Arabian horses from the Heritage Library, including historical photographs, books and pamphlets on Arabian horses. It features many historical sources on horse pedigree and breeds and most notably the book,' Attributes of Purebred Arabian Horses', Katara said in a press statement. The section also includes the books on horse’ lineages, names of Arabian horses, and the history of battles witnessed in the region and related poems. The exhibits on display also include books on horse diseases and treatments, in addition to the books 'The Origins of Arabian Horses & Equestrian' and 'Pure Arabian Horses and their Breeds' written by the Briton, Wentworth. Rare Qatari equestrian heritage pieces are also on display courtesy of Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani Museum. These include horse tools from countries such as Iraq, Syria, Qatar, India, Morocco and Yemen, which have been used since the 9th century. Horseshoes, saddles, bridles for horses and stirrups, cavalry weapons and shoes, as well as pieces of carpet that are used as a cover for the horse’s back and placed before the saddle is put on. The exhibition is also showcasing historical documents of the some of the highest pedigree horses that were first registered in Qatar, such as 'Bint Twaisa', 'Ibn Wadnan' and 'Bint Al-Saqlawiya'. The pavilion also includes some valuable historical references and books that talk about genealogy of purebred Arabian horses in Qatar. It is worth noting that the exhibition is being held in Building No. 1 at Katara and will continue until the end of KIAHF 2023. Further, the festival will also features a number of other art exhibitions, including the 'Interactive Mirrors' exhibition, which is the first of its kind at Katara and in Qatar, the exhibition of Peter Upton’s paintings, and the Brazilian sculptures exhibition by Roberto Clazzini - 'Al-Karimah'. The 'Best Picture' competition on Arabian purebred horses at the festival has a top prize of QR12,000. The competition is open to all Qatar citizens and residents. It will be held on the Auction day, which is February 6. The finalists are Saud Kayed Saud al-Balawi from Saudi Arabia, Faisal Nimas al-Riahi from Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Fahd Abdullah al-Jedei from Kuwait, Hamad Mukhalled al-Mutairi from Kuwait, Mohamed Ahmed al-Mughairfi al-Harbi from Kuwait and Ahmed Mohamed Abdullah al-Muqbali from Oman. They will be invited to recite six selected poems before the jury today as part of the activities of the Katara International Arabian Horse Festival 2023.

No health insurance required for GCC citizens to enter Qatar

GCC citizens are exempted from the mandatory health insurance while entering Qatar, Dr Yousef al-Maslamani, medical director of Hamad General Hospital, told Rayyan TV on Tuesday. The first phase of the new health insurance system, which came into force Wednesday, implements the provisions of Law No. (22) of 2021 regarding the regulation of healthcare services within Qatar, and stipulates that visitors need health insurance.Dr al-Masalamani said the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has prepared mechanisms to implement the first phase of insurance for visitors to the country. The insurance policy for visitors covers emergency and accident services only, with a premium of QR50 per month at the initial issuance and upon extension of the visa. Visitors can also obtain a health insurance policy that covers additional services, and the premiums for such policies will vary.The MoPH has identified nine companies to issue the insurance policy for visitors. They are Qatar Insurance Company, QLM Life and Health Insurance, Gulf Takaful Insurance, Qatar General Insurance and Reinsurance Company, Daman Islamic Insurance Company (Beema), Doha Takaful, General Takaful, Group Doha Insurance and Islamic Insurance.

'World Cup produce counter narratives, shatter Western media campaigns'

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, hosted with high standards, has left a mark of multiple legacies and produced counter narratives that shattered the Western media campaigns, it was pointed out at a panel discussion Tuesday by the Middle East Council on Global Affairs.Titled ‘Qatar 2022 World Cup: Political Legacies and Future Impact’, the discussion was attended by Mahfoud Amara, associate professor in Sport Management and Social Sciences, Qatar University (QU); Mahjoob Zweiri, Professor in Gulf Studies and director of Gulf Studies Centre, QU; Zarqa Parvez, adjunct assistant professor in government, Georgetown University in Qatar and Tony Karon, editorial manager, AJ+. Nader Kabbani, senior fellow and director of research, Middle East Council on Global Affairs, was the moderator.Prof Zweiri noted that the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will remain unforgettable for the excellence in organising and it has left a legacy with lasting political impact.“The World Cup brought in more collaboration between the Arab and Muslim countries while boosting pan-Arabism. Also, it has changed the media narratives about Qatar and the Arab world. The tournament’s impact will last and post World Cup legacy will change regional politics,” he said, adding that the event was notable for its exceptionalism in many aspects.Amara observed that the mega sporting event heralded Arab unity. “Arab League expressed the solidarity with Qatar while the country was criticised for declaring Arab unity. The tournament witnessed the promotion of Arab-Islamic culture and the victory of Saudi Arabia against Argentina and the achievements of Morocco changed the dynamics of the World Cup,” he recalled.Karon explained that the shifting of the political and media attention to Palestine was one of the symbolic moments of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and thereby changed priorities. He noted that the 2022 edition produced the best ever World Cup while lending good experience for many people.Parvez explained that the tournament produced several counter-narratives while highlighting the role of Arab identity. “The tournament underlined that the politics of collective identity can be easily mobilised and the Arab identities were mobilised during the event,” she noted. The World Cup also led to several positive changes and discussions.

Ashghal building more pedestrian bridges to enhance traffic safety

In order to enhance traffic safety and ensure smooth pedestrian movement, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is working on several bridges across key roads."Work is underway in co-operation with the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Transport (MoT)," engineer Ahmed al-Mahmeed, director of Pedestrian Bridges Projects at Ashghal, told Qatar TV. The under construction bridges will serve pedestrians at Al Furousiya Street, Khalifa Street, C- Ring Road, 22 February Street, Al Istiqlal Street, Al Wukair Street and Onaiza Street.Engineer Ahmad al-Mahmeed"There are a number of pedestrian bridges within the third phase that will be implemented during the current year or the beginning of next year," he said.Al-Mahmeed noted that these bridges aim to enhance traffic safety and facilitate smooth movement of pedestrians. Also, they provide pedestrians with easy access to housing and commercial facilities while also catering to cyclists, and those with special needs in terms of providing special lanes and elevators.Local products such as iron, steel, glass, and other materials are used for the pedestrian bridges, which are designed with the highest standards of quality and safety and in accordance with national and international standards. Aesthetic touches are added and their design, inspired by Qatari heritage.Ashghal earlier announced that work is underway to construct additional pedestrian bridges in other areas such as Industrial Area, Al Markhiya, Al Sadd, Al Shamal Road (Duhail), Al Muntazah Street and others.MoT is working on updating the comprehensive plan for pedestrian crossings in Qatar. The plan is upgraded with the aim of improving pedestrian safety.

Indian community celebrates 74th Republic Day

The Indian community in Qatar celebrated the 74th Republic Day of their nation at a grand function at the embassy on Thursday.The event showcased the social and cultural bond between the community members while highlighting India’s strong bilateral relationship with Qatar.Ambassador Dr Deepak Mittal hoisted the Indian national flag, followed by the national anthem.During the event, he read out the message of Indian President Droupadi Murmu and said that India’s amazing journey has inspired many nations.“The Constitution that started governing the life of the Republic was the outcome of the Freedom Struggle,” Dr Mittal read. “The national movement, led by Mahatma Gandhi, was as much about winning Independence as about rediscovering our own ideals.”“Those decades of struggle and sacrifice helped us win freedom not only from colonial rule but also from the imposed values and narrow world-views,” he continued. “Revolutionaries and reformers joined hands with visionaries and idealists to help us learn about our age-old values of peace, brotherhood and equality.”"Sectors of India have been among the fastest-growing major economies despite the bad effects of the (coronavirus [Covid-19] pandemic),” the ambassador read. “With the economy on a sound footing, we have been able to begin and carry forward a series of praiseworthy initiatives.”“The ultimate goal is to create an environment in which all citizens can, individually and collectively, realise their true potential and prosper,” he added. “The Digital India Mission is striving to make information and communication technology inclusive by bridging the rural-urban divide.”"The 'Gaganyaan' programme to carry Indian astronauts into space is under progress. Expo 2023 to boost agriculture techniques and green cities in the region

The Expo 2023 Doha will be an opportunity to improve agriculture and develop green cities in Qatar and the region, a top official has said.Talking to Qatar Radio Wednesday, the event's secretary-general Mohamed al-Khoury said that Expo 2023 Doha will be attended by government entities, private companies and universities that are expected to present research papers and display new farming methods including the technology to reduce water consumption and cooling the greenhouses.The first International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH)-approved A1 World Horticultural Expo in the Middle East, will be open from October 2, 2023 to March 28, 2024. Al-Khoury said that efforts are on to ensure the participation of relevant bodies from across the world. Organisers have so far said that the expo has the capacity to host 80 countries.Works are ongoing at Al Bidda Park, the home of Expo 2023 Doha. The event will occupy 1.7mn sqm and divided into three zones – International Zone, Family Zone and Cultural Zone. Preparations are on by the Ministry of Municipality while working on the first-ever tour of Expo House, Expo 2023 Doha’s unique legacy building.Covered in greenery, the Expo House has the form of a hill and is integrated into the landscape of Al Bidda Park. It’s shaped like a semicircle, with a vast open space in front and a fountain as a centrepiece, while the benches along the sides of the pavilion form a natural amphitheatre offering stunning views and a perfect spot for the Expo’s events and gatherings.

Qatar assumes presidency of Arab social affairs ministers' council meeting

Qatar Sunday assumed the presidency of the 42nd meeting of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, which will be held in Doha on January 25-26, preceded by a a preparatory meeting for senior officials.The session marked the handing over of the presidency to Qatar from Saudi Arabia.Senior officials from the member states attended the preparatory meeting, discussing issues ranging that include social welfare, family, childhood, rights of persons with disabilities and the elderly, eradication of multidimensional poverty and others.In his opening remarks, Ghanem bin Mubarak al-Kuwari, Assistant Undersecretary for Social Affairs at the Ministry of Social Development, and Chairman of the 42nd meeting, said the meeting is the continuation of the c-oordination and co-operation to transfer expertise and knowledge between the relevant ministry in Qatar and its counterparts in the Arab countries to further capitalise on the experience in protection and social care aspects.The agenda of the meeting includes numerous topics that will be formulated into effective policies, recommendations, draft resolutions and decisions to be further submitted to the Arab ministers of Social Affairs at their meeting, al-Kuwari pointed out.He noted that the meeting will discuss topics in the areas of family, childhood, rights of persons with disabilities, eradication of multidimensional poverty in Arab states, in addition to the topics relevant to elderly and aspects of protection, social care, standards of social action and social workers, the programme of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, as well as the action plan of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, and a plethora of activities and proposed studies.Dr Abdullah al-Wahaibi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development for Rehabilitation and Social Guidance, Saudi Arabia, said the current session complements the previous efforts and meetings, exploring the best means of promoting social development in the Arab region in order to attain the highest level of evolution in various fields of social development.“The efforts of the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, in co-operation and co-ordination with the ministers and officials concerned in the member states, have been straightforward to implement the outcomes of the 11th session of the meeting,” al-Wahaibi said, adding that such efforts have achieved and implemented the social dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals.The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development in Saudi Arabia, and stemming from the Vision of Saudi Arabia 2030, has launched numerous initiatives to serve persons with disabilities, including a partnership initiative with the non-state sector and the Purple Saturday initiative, he informed.Al-Wahaibi said the ministry is currently working to conduct a holistic evaluation process for persons with disabilities, which includes health, social, economic and functional aspects. He outlined that the current agenda of the meeting abounds with social topics that require further scrutinisation and discussion to take the appropriate decisions accordingly, for the sake of achieving and implementing the social dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030.Tareq al-Nabulsi, Technical Secretariat of the Arab Social Ministerial Council, emphasised that the current session of the meeting comes within a new trend in the world, which represents recovery from Covid-19, pointing out that such a trend started in the previous session in Saudi Arabia, within the framework of recovery and moving forward to implement the sustainable development plan for 2030.“This event comes after the Arab countries have made significant and numerous strides with respect to promoting the rights of weak and vulnerable segments in the community, with the rights of persons with disabilities and elderly coming at the forefront,” al-Nabulsi said.He stressed the importance of taking into account all unprecedented challenges facing the Arab region, which precipitate synergistic efforts and capitalise on the available technology and potential.In the light of those challenges, the Arab Social Ministerial Council has been keen to co-ordinate with Qatar and the presidency of the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs to crystalise all challenges in the draft agenda to consider all these developments," he added. Mahaseel Festival highlights diverse Qatari products

The ongoing Mahaseel Festival continued to draw big crowds Saturday, offering quality local products, such as vegetables, poultry, meat and dairy items, at affordable prices.The festival also offers flowers and gardening equipment to visitors.Through its offerings, the festival highlights the diverse range of agricultural and other products made in Qatar.“The quality, range and prices of vegetables are among the major attractions, and we enjoy the atmosphere here while walking through the festival site and visiting the stalls,” one of the visitors told Gulf Times Saturday.Varieties of organic and farm-fresh products such as eggplant, tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, mushroom, cucumber, capsicum, broccoli, courgette, beans, gourd, peas, and chili are available at the stalls.They also sell different types of locally produced honey along with dates and date syrup.“Indeed, Qatar is witnessing good progress in vegetable production,” said another visitor. “The festival reflects the passion of local farmers and highlights the diversity of the local vegetable production.”The stalls selling flowers and ornamental plants are evoking a good response from visitors.These offer bouquets of roses and a variety of other flowers and ornamental plants, along with vegetable and fruit seedlings.They also sell agriculture equipment required for the upkeep and beautification of farmland and gardens.There were many buyers for different types of rose bouquets and ornamental shrubs to decorate houses and offices.Visitors, including families, could be seen taking pictures amid the green spaces at the festival site, decorated with flowers.There are a number of accompanying attractions in this year's Mahaseel Festival, such as art workshops and different activities, providing an opportunity for the family to shop and spend quality time.The workshops help to educate children and adults about the importance of agriculture.Children can also enjoy the rides at the venue, while the eateries offer tea and coffee along with traditional Qatari beverages and breads.The seventh edition of the Mahaseel Festival is being held in the southern area of Katara.The festival has been organised by Katara Cultural Village Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and the Qatari farmers' forum.It will run daily from 9am-9pm until January 28, followed by the Mahaseel Market that will be held on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays every week until mid-April.

Kahramaa to set up 150 electric charging stations in 2023

While continuing its sustainability practices and efforts to reduce carbon emission, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), represented by the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), will set up 150 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country in 2023.Engineer Mohamed Khalid al-Sharshani, head of the technical section at Tarsheed, told Qatar TV that these stations will serve the consumers while helping the country achieve its sustainability goals.“Last year, while preparing for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, we set up around 100 electric vehicle charging stations. We are looking to expand the network to 600 to 1,000 fast charging stations by 2025,” al-Sharshani said. The electric charging stations will be established across Qatar in cooperation with various stakeholders including the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) and the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MoTC).Meanwhile, Kahramaa tweeted that it’s making great efforts to keep Qatar vibrant and achieve sustainability in transport, energy and water sectors while spreading awareness and implementing environmental initiatives at the national level.Kahramaa noted that eight electric charging stations were established with the World Cup stadiums while it supported public transportation through its charging stations. Also, Kahramaa added, an agreement was signed with Qatar Fuel (Woqod) to supply, install and operate 37 charging units for electric vehicles (EV) at Woqod stations distributed over 22 sites across Qatar.Ultra-fast and highly efficient, these units can charge cars in less than half an hour and this comes within the many initiatives undertaken by Kahramaa to establish and expand the electric charging network for cars, in response to the strategy adopted by MoT in this regard.While hosting the World Cup, Kahramaa, in cooperation with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), launched the 'Sustainability Zone' initiative in the Kahramaa Awareness Park, to introduce the FIFA World Cup fans to the environmental sustainability efforts associated with the tournament.

Dream come true: Specially-abled brothers meet Messi at stadium

Shaking hands with Lionel Messi and posing for a photograph with the football legend, it was a dream come true and a moment to cherish for two Doha-based specially-abled brothers. Dominic and Daniel, expatriates from India, were invited by FIFA to watch the World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Croatia at Lusail Stadium. Besides Messi, the duo got the opportunity to meet Argentina players and shook hands with the likes of Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez and Paulo Dybala in the Mixed Zone of the stadium while the two teams were heading into the ground for the kickoff.“For me, it’s like a long-pending dream coming true. I was more than excited while Messi shook my hands and wished me,” said Dominic, who is a diehard Argentina fan. In fact, Dominic said, "I don’t remember who all passed by me after I was greeted by Messi and handshake with him."Dominic (16) and Daniel (11) suffer from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder characterised by the progressive loss of muscle. The two boys, along with their parents Vinu Joseph and Bindu Simon, were given a special invitation by FIFA to attend the match after Vinu’s colleague Koshy Panicker approached the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.In the Mixed Zone, the family took a photo with Messi, and the two boys also accompanied the Argentina players to the ground for their national anthem. Daniel, a Portugal fan, was also glad to meet and greet some of his favourite players. Vinu said the family was given due care and consideration inside the stadium with a range of services and facilities to ensure connectivity and mobility for specially-abled fans. The family was offered a room in the stadium lobby, which was equipped with the latest assistive technology and educational and rehabilitation equipment. The stadiums have sensory rooms for people with intellectual disabilities.

Qatari comedian, presenter Hamad al-Amari earns global acclaim for FFF performance

Famous Qatari comedian and presenter Hamad al-Amari has received international recognition in appreciation for his stunning performance while enthralling and entertaining fans at the FIFA Fan Festival (FFF) at Al Bidda Park from November 19 to December 18, as part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.Al-Amari, during a conversation with Gulf Times, said that he has got invitations to visit various countries after his performance struck a chord with international fans. Nearly 2mn fans from across the world enjoyed the FFF.“I have been invited to Japan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, India, Costa Rica, Berlin, France, the US and a host of other countries and cities around the world. This is a recognition indeed,” he said. Al-Amari was invited by a Japanese family, who he helped find accommodation after they wanted to extend their stay in Qatar. “I met a family from Japan who flew to Qatar for the World Cup. None of the family members spoke English or Arabic. They expressed their love to me using Google translate and I was speaking to them through Google translate. It’s amazing to be able to have these kinds of interactions with people from all around the world. I helped them find the accommodation and they invited me to stay with them in Japan,” al-Amari recalled.Attired in the traditional Qatari thobe, ghutra and igal, al-Amari was on the stage of the FIFA Fan Festival, anchoring the programmes every night. Despite the demands of the project, which had him facing incredible audiences daily for about a month, al-Amari feels incredibly grateful for the opportunity to grow and evolve as an entertainer through it. “Anytime a performer is on stage, they have a chance to perfect their craft. Being on stage daily helped me connect with incredible people and continue delivering entertainment,” he noted.The stand-up comedian has hosted the fan zones in Qatar in 2014 and 2018. “My goal has always been to deliver great performances continually, so I was happy to be responsible for the FIFA Fan Festival this year and glad to be recognised by an entity like FIFA for my work,” he said.Al-Amari loves engaging with people from around the world while interacting with them during the match breaks. “The Fan Festival is a place that is filled with fans who are already excited, so the entertainment part is easy when they are coming with such great energy. Also, I love football and this is the best World Cup ever from a football perspective so I know both the fans and I are having a blast,” he said, adding that the festival was the best place to be in Qatar during the World Cup outside of stadiums.“I felt like I am living the dream while being at the festival. The family was offered a room in the stadium lobby, which was equipped with the latest assistive technology and educational and rehabilitation equipment. The stadiums have sensory rooms for people with intellectual disabilities.

Indian calligrapher adds colour, enthusiasm to World Cup mood

Vibrant graffiti depicting football fever and adorning streets, walls, stadiums and buildings have earned appreciation from fans who descended on the country from across the world for the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.Among these works are the much celebrated Arhbu mural at Doha Corniche, a painting at Lusail Stadium of Lionel Messi’s trademark pointing to the sky celebration, and the Now Is All mural, again at the Corniche.Indian calligrapher Abdul Kareem is glad to leave his mark on the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 while giving vent to his creativity to promote football by mixing heritage and culture with the beautiful game.“I could play a role in the World Cup by enthralling the fans and showing them Qatar’s love for art and football,” he told Gulf Times.Popularly known as “Kareemgraphy”, the Qatar resident is a professional artist and has been active in calligraphy and painting.He was selected by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and invited to share his talent while lending Qatar’s guests a picture of the country’s rich artistic and visual scene during the World Cup.The artist painted live 10 murals at Doha Corniche, Lusail Stadium, Al Messila and Umm Salal Desert.The artworks highlight Qatar’s tradition, culture and its passion for football.Pictures of his tribute to Morocco’s win were widely shared among Arab fans.The painting has two wings, with one showing Qatar’s flag and the other featuring Morocco’s flag, depicting the warm relations between both nations.The artist also received recognition from FIFA when his calligraphy was included in the latest song Ezz Alarab in both video and poster.What makes the paintings special is that they are closely attached to Qatar’s arts and cultural legacy.“My works have melded the artistic features of Arabic calligraphy. I used Arabic letters with some murals to highlight the Arab art,” the artist said, observing that it was a different experience to paint on streets.“Streets are amazing places with great artistic potential. Even without art, the streets are beautiful and they stay alive,” Kareemgraphy explained. “While colouring the streets, I tried to make them further beautiful and intact.”The artist said that his works were widely appreciated by fans from across the world, and he has received recognition from local and international artists.“My works are viewed by thousands, and I feel happy (when I see) them taking pictures,” he remarked. “Being part of the artists’ collective, I could learn a lot while sharing the ideas and experiences. Many presented me with gifts in appreciation of my work.”

'Battle of Lusail' brings tears of joy to young Argentina fan

Friday’s 'Battle of Lusail' brought cheers to Argentina fans across the world, including a 13-year-old from the Indian state of Kerala, for whom it also a moment of 'redemption'.After Argentina's shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, Mohamed Nibras from Thrikaripur in northern Kerala was mocked and a video went viral showing him crying after his favourite team lost.But all that is in the past. For, Nibras, who travelled to Qatar to witness Argentina's victory over the Netherlands at Lusail Stadium last Friday, has lots to cheer about - the tears of pain turning into tears of joy.“I was upset when my team suffered the shock loss. But now I am glad that I could witness Argentina's victory with thousands of people at Lusail Stadium on Friday,” Nibras told Gulf Times.A diehard fan of Lionel Messi, Nibras cheered for his team at the stadium and watched the full match. He was happy to take some photographs while realising his dream of watching his favourite Argentina stars in action. “Messi rose to the expectations of fans and our team achieved what it deserved,” he said, adding that it felt like his dream was coming true while watching the match and that he is now a star.UAE-based Smart Travel managing director Afi Ahmed arranged Nibras's trip to Doha and the tickets. The young fan travelled from Kannur to Dubai last week. From Dubai, he flew to Doha on Friday and left the country for Dubai after watching the match. “Nibras has proven to be a strong boy, who resisted the mocking while his team lost. I wanted to motivate him and his ability to stay strong,” Afi told Gulf Times.Nibras wanted to come to Qatar even though he had to attend his examinations. Luckily, his parents allowed him to travel and the travel agency contacted the family.“My parents let me go, saying this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I will appear for the exams later accordingly,” he said. "Exams will come again. And those who made fun of me are treating me like a star now."In the video, Nibras had predicted that the Latin American team will fight back after the loss to Saudi in the group stage. And the team did so emphatically, bouncing back to beat Mexico, Poland, Australia and the Netherlands. Nibras is confident that the team will lift the World Cup in Qatar.The boy also hopes to see Messi add to his goal tally at this World Cup. The Argentina star, who has scored four goals until now, will get that chance in the semi-final against Croatia.

The Moroccan flag could be seen flying everywhere in Doha as fans continued to celebrate the team's amazing FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 journey.Morocco's victories over footballing powerhouses and their march to the semi-finals have brought the Arab world together, from Doha to Casablanca and beyond, with the celebrations reflecting the Arab unity.Fans carrying the flags of Morocco, Qatar, Palestine and Saudi Arabia, among other Arab nations, welcomed the Atlas Lions' victory in style at Souq Waqif, Msheireb Downtown Doha, Darb Lusail, metro stations and the streets of Doha.“Morocco’s victory gives us much pleasure,” Lutfi Yunus from Egypt told *Gulf Times. “And Morocco has inspired Arab pride.”Morocco defeated Portugal 1-0 in a quarter-final clash at Al Thumama Stadium on Saturday, becoming the first Arab or African team to make it to the last four of the tournament.Hundreds thronged Souq Waqif to buy Moroccan flags and red-and-green jerseys.“We are glad that our country is hosting this amazing tournament in which our Arab brothers have had this historic achievement,” a Qatari fan said while celebrating with the Moroccan flag at Msheireb Downtown Doha. “They deserve our support and we are here for our brothers with our bodies and hearts.”Cars draped in the Moroccan flag could be seen on streets across the Qatari capital.“The victory is not about a simple victory in a football match. The Moroccans had already set the bar high and raised the hopes of the entire Arab world and the African continent, thanks to their sterling performances against formidable teams such as Belgium, Croatia and Spain. And Walid Regragui is doing his job amazingly while guiding the team to the next round,” said Suhaib Ouni noting that the credit of the achievements goes to the players and the staff equally. “Everyone is doing his bit with dedication and passion. And we will make it to the final while beat our next opponent,” he said.Another fan, Othman noted that the fans were upset while Walid Cheddira earned a red card while the match entered injury time. “We made it possible despite some unexpected backlashes. Cheddira’s exit isn't going to affect the team’s in the next round. We got good replacements,” he said.

GCC residents and citizens plan big in Doha after free entry announced

Many citizens as well as residents are planning to spend the weekend in Doha while watching the matches and exploring the tourist destinations. “It’s a good opportunity for GCC residents to enjoy the World Cup vibe while exploring Qatar. We are looking to spend this weekend in Doha while enjoying the World Cup moments with friends there,” Dubai resident Fasil Firoz told Gulf Times.The new step was taken in the context of the State's efforts to provide an opportunity for visitors, citizens and residents of the GCC countries, to enjoy the atmosphere accompanying the matches of the World Cup.As per the plans, Fasil, with his friends, will drive to the Qatar- Saudi Arabia border from where they will take the free transportation from the checkpoint to Al-Messila in Central Doha where they will be picked by friends.“We like to go to the stadiums and fan zones and become part of the World Cup in Qatar,” he said.Fans and tourists crossing the land border using buses and various means of land transportation can make use of the parking facilities allocated for visitors at Abu Samra border. The citizens and residents of the GCC countries arriving in Qatar by air will be able to enter without requiring registration via the Hayya platform. They must apply for a permit on the MoI website at least 12 hours before travel; the permit does not require any fee. Fans who wish to see the matches live in a stadium must register via the Hayya online platform. MoI has increased the number of passport counters at the checkpoint to serve visitors to the country, including fans, citizens, residents and others. And it has set up a comfortable tent ready to receive more than 4,000 people per hour.Mosafer Travel and Tourism general manager Firos Nattu said that many GCC residents are availing the benefit of the new step noting that the weekends will see the influx of tourists and fans.Another Dubai resident Zubair Sidheeq, who is planning to spend Saturday and Sunday in Doha, said that he will be driving to the Saudi Arabian city Salwa from where he will head to Abu Samra border by bus, arranged by the Saudi Ministry of Transport. From the border, he will reach Doha by the free bus. “The proceedings are easy and we are looking to avail of the new scheme,” he said.

Moroccan fans flood Doha streets after historic win

Excited Moroccan fans thronged the streets of Doha singing and dancing, while celebrating their national team’s historic win against Spain in the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 on Tuesday.In the red-green t-shirts, the Moroccan fans streamed through Souq Waqif, Katara Cultural Village, Msheireb Downtown Doha and metro stations late into the night.“We want the night to be cherished and remembered. This is a great occasion. Our team has attained what is, to some extent, perceived as impossible. We got every reason to cheer while staying awake the whole night,” Morocco fan Zainab told Gulf Times.“We love our players. The defenders did their part amazingly well preventing the Spanish players from scoring while the strikers made some spectacular moves,” said Marwan, another fan.Morocco's goal keeper Yassine Bounou has won the hearts of the fans by saving Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets’ penalty. “Indeed, the credit of the victory goes to all. But, we owe much to Bounou for his heroic performance at the Education City Stadium. The Sevilla star played a crucial role in taking our team to the next level,” Marwan added.Fans of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Tunisian teams also showed their support to Morocco while taking part in the processions and wearing the national team’s jerseys. “Our Arab brothers did a good job. We should support Morocco since it’s the only Arab team remaining in the tournament,” said one Qatari fan.Abdul Raoof from Tunisia said that he became an ardent supporter of Morocco after his national team exited the tournament in the first round. “Our brothers deserve our love and solidarity,” he added.
