Over 350 students from public and private schools in Qatar are participating in the eighth edition of Qatar Career Development Centre’s (QCDC) “My Career – My Future” programme, which got underway Sunday at Multaqa, Education City.
“My Career – My Future”, the flagship job-shadowing programme of QCDC, founded by Qatar Foundation, aims to nurture and mentor high school students to prepare for their future careers in line with labour market needs.
Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of the programme, Hamad Ali al-Bader, senior career development specialist at QCDC, said that the main purpose of the programme is to allow students to explore careers through the intensive week-long programme.
Al-Bader noted: “The students get hands-on experiences and meet a number of people in various fields. They see the system, the environment of the career and we teach them in the workshops how to use and leverage this opportunity. We have been open for registration for three weeks and they register with us.”
“They choose their preferences through the website before they come for the programme. They choose the sector they are interested in. Based on the profile and the interest that we have, we position them in each sector. We have above 30 sectors for the students to choose from and more than 33 entities are representing in the programme,” explained the official.
Running from August 2–6, the five-day programme is organised in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), the Ministry of Labour (MoL), the Ministry of Sports and Youth (MoSY), and the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau (CSGDB).
The opening ceremony featured remarks by Saad Abdulla al-Kharji, executive director of QCDC; Ahmed Mohammed al-Harami, assistant undersecretary, Youth Affairs at MoSY; and Yaqoub Saleh al-Ishaq, director, Civil Service Affairs at CSGDB. The opening ceremony also included a video featuring glimpses of previous editions of the programme and highlighting how it benefited participants.
Following the ceremony, students attended two orientation and training sessions to provide the theoretical grounding and practical readiness needed to benefit from the job-shadowing experience. The sessions prepared participants to approach their placements with clear expectations and engage purposefully with the professionals and workplaces they will encounter.
Over the next three days, students will be hosted by participating organisations, where they will observe professionals at work and gain first-hand insight into a wide range of sectors. The programme will conclude on August 6 with a closing ceremony and a University Fair, connecting participants’ workplace exposure with their future study options.
This year’s participant cohort includes, for the first time, students with disabilities and additional learning needs, reflecting QCDC’s continued commitment to more inclusive access to career-development opportunities. It also includes students from Assalam Schools, whose participation forms part of the co-operation between QCDC and Education Above All Foundation to provide career-development support to students served by the organisation.
