Arab business schools must undergo a fundamental transformation if they are to remain relevant in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) and the digital economy, according to Professor Dr Mohammed Abdulwahab al-Azzawi, an international expert in Total Quality Management and former advisor to Qatar's Ministry of Administrative Development and the Institute of Public Administration.
Al-Azzawi, who is also a professor at the College of Administration and Economics at the University of Baghdad and former dean of the Institute of Accounting and Financial Studies, believes that updating curricula alone is no longer sufficient. Instead, universities must adopt a comprehensive institutional transformation that reshapes academic thinking, teaching methodologies, and the way future business leaders are prepared.
Speaking to Gulf Times, al-Azzawi said the vision emerged from his involvement in a feasibility study for establishing a private university, followed by extensive visits to leading universities across Europe and the Arab world. Those experiences, he explained, exposed a widening gap between the traditional business education model still prevalent in many Arab universities and the innovative approaches adopted by internationally competitive institutions.
His experience leading business administration departments at universities across Iraq and the Gulf further reinforces the need for a practical roadmap to modernise business education and align it with the demands of the Fifth Industrial Revolution.
According to al-Azzawi, the transformation should begin with a comprehensive assessment of existing knowledge and technological gaps, followed by the redesign of academic programmes around emerging disciplines such as Business Analytics, Financial Technology (FinTech), Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence in Management. Equally important, he said, is equipping faculty members with the digital competencies needed to lead this transition.
He argued that business education must move beyond traditional lecture-based instruction toward experiential learning built on applied projects, digital simulations, and virtual business environments that mirror real-world corporate operations.
Such an approach, he noted, would enable students to develop critical thinking, data-driven decision-making, and problem-solving skills essential for modern organisations.
Al-Azzawi also stressed that universities cannot achieve meaningful transformation in isolation. Instead, they should establish strategic partnerships with industry leaders and technology companies, create centres of research excellence, and expand collaborative programmes with internationally recognised universities. These partnerships, he said, would help ensure that graduates possess the practical skills demanded by today's labour market while providing students with internationally benchmarked educational opportunities.
Faculty development, he added, remains the cornerstone of successful digital transformation. Continuous professional training in artificial intelligence applications, data analytics, cloud computing, and emerging digital technologies is essential if academic staff are to effectively prepare students for the rapidly evolving business landscape. Likewise, universities must invest in smart infrastructure, including advanced digital laboratories, simulation platforms, and real-time data visualisation systems that replicate contemporary business environments.
To facilitate this transition, al-Azzawi's study proposes a five-stage implementation framework beginning with institutional assessment and strategic gap analysis, followed by curriculum redesign, faculty capacity building, pilot implementation of new academic pathways, and continuous evaluation through measurable performance indicators. Graduate employability, employer satisfaction, research quality, and international accreditation should serve as key benchmarks for measuring success.
Al-Azzawi concluded that digital transformation is not a one-time reform but a continuous journey of innovation and adaptation. The future of business schools, he said, will not be determined by the number of courses they offer, but by their ability to produce graduates capable of analysing complex data, managing crises, leveraging artificial intelligence responsibly, and leading organisations through the challenges of the knowledge economy.
"The universities that begin this transformation today," he said, "will be the ones best positioned to lead tomorrow's knowledge-driven economy."
