Gulf hostilities flared again yesterday as Iranian attacks on Kuwait damaged its airport and injured dozens while the US military carried out strikes ‌near the Strait of Hormuz, with diplomacy to halt the war showing little sign of progress.The attacks are the latest to ​test a shaky ceasefire, sending oil prices up nearly ‌2%, as the strait remains largely closed more than three months after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran. Flights at ‌Kuwait International Airport were suspended ⁠after an Iranian drone and missile attack ‌damaged airport facilities and diplomatic missions, killing one person and injuring ‌more than 60 others, Kuwaiti authorities and state media said.Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways later resumed flights after taking safety measures, the civil aviation authority said.Later, Kuwait's Foreign Ministry handed a formal protest note to the Iranian embassy, condemning "continued Iranian attacks". According to Kuwait's statement, delivered by Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Hamad al-Meshan, the decision also announced measures to reduce the size of Iran's diplomatic mission, including declaring two diplomats persona non grata.Earlier, Iranian ⁠media reported that Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) had attacked the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and a US airbase, as well as a vessel identified as Panaya. US Central Command denied its bases had been hit and said Iranian ballistic missiles failed to strike their targets in the region.IIGC however, said they did not fire at Kuwait's airport and blamed the destruction on US interceptor missiles that failed to hit their targets, according to Iranian state media. The US military said that was not accurate, and that Iranian drones targeted the airport deliberately.CENTCOM said it had carried out a new round of "defensive strikes" in southern Iran, targeted missile launch sites and Iranian boats seeking to lay mines, and conducted strikes on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz after attempted Iranian attacks. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi later said in a post on X that his country's armed forces were conducting "self-defence strikes on sites the US is permitted to use to attack civilian shipping and violate the ceasefire". "Any ​hostile act will be met with an immediate, decisive response," he added.Since the US and Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28, Tehran has repeatedly attacked targets in the Gulf region home to US military bases, hitting civilian and military targets.Hostilities have occasionally flared up in recent weeks despite a ceasefire agreed in early ‌April, as the US has pushed to reopen the ⁠Strait of Hormuz, a route ​that handled roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments before the war. Last week, Iran and the US signalled ​progress towards a tentative initial agreement to halt the war and reopen the strait, but the two sides have yet to sign off on the deal, which would leave more complex negotiations for later.Mohsen Rezaei, military adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, said Iran would not allow the US to "overreach" either in negotiations or ceasefire arrangements.In a post on X, he warned that any aggression would be met with a barrage of missiles and drones.Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the United Arab Emirates president, said repeated attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain required a firm and cohesive Gulf response. "The aggression does not target one country alone, but all of us," he wrote on X.Since mid-March, Trump has repeatedly said he is close to a deal to end the fighting and pave the way for negotiations on thorny issues including the future of Iran's nuclear program.In a podcast interview released yesterday, Trump said Iran had agreed to not have a nuclear weapon and that Khamenei was involved in negotiations.Yesterday, Israeli drone strikes killed at least six people in southern Lebanon and targeted a car just south of Beirut, Lebanese security sources said, while Israel said it intercepted a hostile aircraft likely fired by Hezbollah. There was no immediate response from the Israeli military to Reuters questions about the drone strikes, but the attack on the car appeared to mark the closest attack to Beirut since Trump asked Israel not to hit the Lebanese capital, under a US-mediated partial ceasefire announced on Monday. In his podcast comments, Trump acknowledged having called Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "crazy" during a reportedly expletive-filled phone exchange over the fighting in Lebanon as he sought a deal over the wider war."At some point I said, Bibi, we got to stop this. We got to stop it," Trump said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname.Netanyahu told CNBC in an interview ‌that he and Trump sometimes had "tactical disagreements" but ​that they agreed on the main issues concerning Iran. 

Qatar has reaffirmed its firm stance in favour of de-escalation, declaring its opposition to any measures that could deepen the regional conflict or threaten stability, as its armed forces continue to intercept attacks on its territory. Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ weekly briefing Tuesday, His Excellency the Adviser to the Prime Minister and Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Dr Majed bin Mohammed al-Ansari said Qatar’s immediate focus is on defending its sovereignty and responding to ongoing attacks. He confirmed that the Qatar Armed Forces have successfully intercepted more than 90% of Iranian missiles and drones targeting the country. Dr al-Ansari expressed appreciation for defence co-operation with allied partners, singling out the United States, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and European partners, as well as GCC states, whose co-ordinated joint defence efforts he described as both active and effective. While clarifying that Qatar is not currently engaged in direct mediation with Iran, Dr al-Ansari said the country continues to extend full support for diplomatic initiatives led by Pakistan, Egypt, and Türkiye, expressing hope these efforts would yield peaceful outcomes. He stressed that GCC leaders remain in daily contact and are united in their call for restraint.  On Qatar-Iran relations, Dr al-Ansari said Doha has not severed diplomatic ties but has lodged a formal rejection of the attacks and warned of their damaging effect on bilateral relations. He underscored the importance of preserving neighbourly relations in the long term. Dr al-Ansari warned that Iran had crossed multiple red lines through strikes on critical civilian and energy infrastructure across the region, describing such actions as wholly unacceptable and a clear breach of international law. He cautioned that continued escalation — unaddressed since 2023 — risks drawing additional parties into the conflict and pushing it to more dangerous levels. The targeting of power and water facilities, he added, poses a direct threat to civilian populations. On the economic dimension, Dr al-Ansari raised alarm over the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, warning it would trigger a sharp rise in global energy prices and disrupt supply chains worldwide. Despite the prevailing volatility, he affirmed Qatar’s standing as a reliable energy supplier committed to maintaining stable flows to international markets. He noted that recent high-level meetings in Washington, led by His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, centred on protecting freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted movement of trade through the Strait. He further cautioned against strikes on nuclear and energy installations, warning of potentially catastrophic consequences including radioactive contamination and widespread power outages with implications far beyond the region. On Lebanon, Dr al-Ansari reaffirmed Qatar’s support for Lebanese sovereignty and its rejection of Israeli strikes on civilians and incursions into Lebanese territory, describing such actions as clear violations of international law. Regarding legal accountability, Dr al-Ansari confirmed that Qatar has submitted formal communications to the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to document violations it has faced, adding that legal efforts in this regard would continue. He said a full assessment of economic losses would be conducted once the crisis subsides. 

The Qatar Stars League will resume Thursday following a short suspension since March 1 due to the ongoing regional conflict, with several crucial encounters lined up as the competition enters a decisive phase of the season.The pause had led to the postponement of two Round 17 matches – Qatar SC against Al Shamal and Al Arabi versus Al Sailiya – which have now been rescheduled for April 7. With the league returning to action, attention now shifts to Week 18, where teams will look to regain momentum and strengthen their positions in the standings.Three matches will kick off simultaneously at 9.30pm tonight. Al Sailiya will face Al Duhail at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Al Wakrah will meet Al Shamal at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, while Qatar SC will take on Al Gharafa at Al Thumama Stadium.The remaining fixtures of the round will be played Friday, with Al Ahli facing Al Arabi at Al Thumama Stadium, Al Rayyan taking on Al Shahania at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium and leaders Al Sadd hosting Umm Salal at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.Al Sadd sit at the top of the standings with 38 points, maintaining a four-point advantage over closest challengers Al Gharafa, while Al Shamal occupy third place with 31 points as they continue their impressive campaign.Among the most anticipated matches Thursday will be the clash between Al Gharafa and Qatar SC. Gharafa are determined to keep pace with leaders Al Sadd as they continue their pursuit of the title. The Cheetahs know that any slip-up at this stage could allow their rivals to widen the gap at the top.Gharafa coach Pedro Martins confirmed that his players are fully prepared for the challenge despite the unusual circumstances surrounding the recent break in the league schedule. “Facing Qatar SC is important and we must make the necessary effort to achieve victory,” Martins said ahead of the match.He added that the stability in Qatar had helped the team maintain its preparations despite the regional situation. “Despite the circumstances in the region, the stability in Qatar has allowed the players to continue following the training programmes set by the coaching staff,” he explained.Martins also noted that several players have shown improved physical condition after the brief pause in competition. “Over the last few days training has become more regular for the team as a whole. Some players were feeling fatigue after the break, but from what I have seen they are now in better physical condition than they were about 10 or 12 days ago,” he said.Qatar SC currently occupy fifth place with 24 points and remain firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish. A victory against Gharafa would not only boost their position but also strengthen their confidence heading into the final stretch of the competition.Qatar SC assistant coach Miguel Andreu acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge but expressed confidence in his team’s preparations. “Our match against Al Gharafa will be difficult and we have prepared for it in the appropriate manner,” Andreu said. “I have confidence in our players and our ambition is to win in order to continue our winning streak.”He emphasised the importance of each match as the league approaches its final stages. “Every match during this period is of great value to us, so we strive to deliver good performances and achieve the results we are looking for because our goal is to continue moving forward in the standings,” he added.At Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, another intriguing contest awaits as Al Wakrah host Al Shamal. Wakrah are in seventh place with 23 points and are eager to return to winning ways after recent mixed results. The Blue Wave suffered a 1-3 defeat to Al Sadd in Round 16 before playing out a 2-2 draw with Umm Salal.Head coach Vicente Moreno believes his players are ready to resume the league campaign after the brief interruption. “The team has prepared well for the match and the objective is naturally to collect the three points,” Moreno said.He also acknowledged the quality of the opposition and the challenge his side will face. “We know very well that we are playing against a strong team that has strong elements in all lines. Their position in the standings is clear proof of their strength, so overcoming them requires maintaining the highest level of focus throughout the match.”Shamal, meanwhile, have been one of the standout teams this season and currently occupy third place with 31 points from 16 matches. A victory would allow them to maintain pressure on the top two while further consolidating their position among the league’s leading contenders.Coach David Prats expects a demanding encounter. “We are expecting a tough match against a strong team which, in my opinion, is one of the best teams in the league,” Prats said. “They have top-level players with excellent abilities and are guided by a competent coaching staff. We have trained hard over the past period and are ready for the match, which we know will not be easy, like all league matches.”Meanwhile, Al Duhail w
