Qatar has reaffirmed its firm stance in favour of de-escalation, declaring its opposition to any measures that could deepen the regional conflict or threaten stability, as its armed forces continue to intercept attacks on its territory.
Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ weekly briefing Tuesday, His Excellency the Adviser to the Prime Minister and Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Dr Majed bin Mohammed al-Ansari said Qatar’s immediate focus is on defending its sovereignty and responding to ongoing attacks. He confirmed that the Qatar Armed Forces have successfully intercepted more than 90% of Iranian missiles and drones targeting the country.
Dr al-Ansari expressed appreciation for defence co-operation with allied partners, singling out the United States, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and European partners, as well as GCC states, whose co-ordinated joint defence efforts he described as both active and effective.
While clarifying that Qatar is not currently engaged in direct mediation with Iran, Dr al-Ansari said the country continues to extend full support for diplomatic initiatives led by Pakistan, Egypt, and Türkiye, expressing hope these efforts would yield peaceful outcomes. He stressed that GCC leaders remain in daily contact and are united in their call for restraint.
On Qatar-Iran relations, Dr al-Ansari said Doha has not severed diplomatic ties but has lodged a formal rejection of the attacks and warned of their damaging effect on bilateral relations. He underscored the importance of preserving neighbourly relations in the long term.
Dr al-Ansari warned that Iran had crossed multiple red lines through strikes on critical civilian and energy infrastructure across the region, describing such actions as wholly unacceptable and a clear breach of international law. He cautioned that continued escalation — unaddressed since 2023 — risks drawing additional parties into the conflict and pushing it to more dangerous levels. The targeting of power and water facilities, he added, poses a direct threat to civilian populations.
On the economic dimension, Dr al-Ansari raised alarm over the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, warning it would trigger a sharp rise in global energy prices and disrupt supply chains worldwide.
Despite the prevailing volatility, he affirmed Qatar’s standing as a reliable energy supplier committed to maintaining stable flows to international markets. He noted that recent high-level meetings in Washington, led by His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, centred on protecting freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted movement of trade through the Strait.
He further cautioned against strikes on nuclear and energy installations, warning of potentially catastrophic consequences including radioactive contamination and widespread power outages with implications far beyond the region.
On Lebanon, Dr al-Ansari reaffirmed Qatar’s support for Lebanese sovereignty and its rejection of Israeli strikes on civilians and incursions into Lebanese territory, describing such actions as clear violations of international law.
Regarding legal accountability, Dr al-Ansari confirmed that Qatar has submitted formal communications to the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to document violations it has faced, adding that legal efforts in this regard would continue.
He said a full assessment of economic losses would be conducted once the crisis subsides.
