India and Malaysia Sunday pledged to deepen their semiconductor partnership as the Indian Ocean neighbours ramp up trade and security links during a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Modi touched down in Malaysia on Saturday, his first visit in more than a decade, where he inked a number of agreements with Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim, including deals on renewable energy, health care and artificial intelligence."Along with AI and digital technologies, we will advance our partnership in semiconductors, health, and food security," Modi said."This meeting and these exchanges are very vital, very strategic and critical to advance and enhance relations between India and Malaysia," Anwar added at a news conference in Malaysia's administrative capital Putrajaya.Malaysia ranks sixth in worldwide exports of semiconductors, while the sector contributes around 25% of gross domestic product, according to Malaysian government figures.India's foreign ministry said the Southeast Asian nation had a "very strong semiconductor ecosystem"."They have almost 30 to 40 years of experience in those areas," the ministry added in a statement ahead of Modi's arrival."Our companies are... interested in collaborating with Malaysia," it said, including in research and development and building manufacturing and testing plants.For instance, Tata Electronics was in talks last June with global semiconductor companies to buy a fabrication or outsourced semiconductor assembly or test plant in Malaysia, Indian and Malaysian news reports said at the time.Last year India exported $7.32bn in goods, mainly in engineering and petroleum products, said the India Brand Equity Foundation.Imports from Malaysia amounted to $12.54bn, mainly minerals, vegetable oil and electrical machinery and equipment.Malaysia also has a large Indian-origin population, around 6.8%, or almost 3mn people, official statistics said."This living bridge... of diaspora is a great strength for us. The steps taken for their welfare lend a human foundation to our relationship," Modi said.

Pakistani security forces killed 145 militants in a ‌40-hour battle launched as a series ‍of co-ordinated gun and bomb attacks across Balochistan left nearly 50 people dead, the province's chief minister said Sunday.Authorities in the ⁠southwestern province are battling one of the deadliest ⁠flare-ups in years, as insurgents in the resource-rich province bordering Iran and Afghanistan step up assaults on security ‍forces, civilians and infrastructure.Attackers dressed as ordinary civilians entered hospitals, schools, banks and markets on Saturday before opening fire, Pakistan's junior interior minister Talal Chaudhry said."In each case, the attackers came in dressed as civilians and indiscriminately targeted ordinary people working in shops," he said, adding militants had used civilians as human shields.The banned separatist group Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it had launched a coordinated operation dubbed Herof, or "black storm", targeting security forces across the province.In Quetta, ‌the provincial capital, the aftermath was visible in burnt-out vehicles at a police station, bullet-riddled doors and streets sealed off with yellow tape, as security forces tightened patrols and restricted movement following the attacks.Chief Minister of Balochistan Sarfraz ‍Bugti said 17 law enforcement personnel and ⁠31 civilians were killed ‌in the militant attacks. Pakistan's military said 92 militants were killed on Saturday, while 41 were killed on Friday."We had intelligence reports that this kind of operation was being planned, and as a result of those, we started pre-operations a day before," Bugti said.The latest total is the highest number of militants killed in such a short span since the insurgency intensified, Bugti said, without providing comparative figures.Officials said the militant assaults were launched almost simultaneously across Quetta, Gwadar, Mastung and Noshki districts, with armed men opening fire at security installations including a Frontier Corps headquarters, attempting suicide bombings and briefly blocking roads in urban areas, prompting large-scale counter-operations by the army, police and counterterrorism units.Outside a damaged shop, private security guard Jamil Ahmed Mashwani said attackers struck shortly after ​midday. "They hit me on my face and ‌head."Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province, has faced a decades-long insurgency led by ethnic Baloch separatists seeking greater autonomy and a larger share ⁠of its natural resources.The group claimed it ‍had killed 84 members of Pakistan's security forces and captured 18 others. Reuters could not independently verify the claim. The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that two of the attacks involved female perpetrators and militants were increasingly targeting civilians, labourers and low-income communities.The military said security forces had repelled attempts by militants to seize control of any city or strategic installation.Pakistan's military ​said on Saturday the attacks were carried out by "Indian-sponsored militants". India denied that assertion Sunday."We categorically reject the baseless allegations made by Pakistan," Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement".The United States condemned the attacks, with US Charge d'Affaires Natalie Baker calling them acts of terrorist violence and saying Washington stood in solidarity with Pakistan. The Balochistan Liberation Army is designated by the US as a foreign terrorist organisation.Pakistan has faced periodic attacks by Islamist ⁠militants elsewhere in the country, including factions linked to the Pakistani Taliban. 

The Lebanese Army Thursday received 37 vehicles from Qatar, delivered through the Qatar Fund for Development as part of a 162-vehicle grant to bolster operational capacity. “This support reflects Qatar’s steadfast commitment to Lebanon’s security and stability,” said His Excellency Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman al‑Thani, Qatar’s ambassador to Lebanon. Brigadier General Amin al-Qaai, representing the Lebanese Army Commander, thanked Qatar for “its continued and sincere support to the Lebanese military institution.” 

Qatar officially launched the fourth edition of Arabian Gulf Security — a large-scale joint tactical exercise bringing together security forces from across the Gulf Cooperation Council — in a ceremony Sunday under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. The exercise, which runs until 4 February, features comprehensive participation from all six GCC member states — Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates — alongside specialised security units from the United States. His Excellency Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior Abdullah bin Khalaf bin Hattab al-Kaabi attended the opening ceremony, along with Assistant Secretary-General for Security Affairs at the GCC General Secretariat Brigadier-General Hamad Ajlan al-Amim, Their Excellencies the heads of the exercise's higher committees from across GCC nations, and senior officers and representatives of the participating security agencies. Arabian Gulf Security 4 comprises over 70 advanced training scenarios, amassing more than 260 hours of intensive field drills aimed at sharpening tactical preparedness and boosting operational efficiency. Officials have underscored the exercise's core objectives: to elevate security readiness among participating forces, strengthen integration and field co-ordination across multiple agencies, and assess and refine operational plans, response protocols, and joint interoperability. The drills are designed to reflect the advanced professionalism and evolving capabilities of Gulf security agencies in facing contemporary security challenges. The scenarios are built around real-world situations, spanning from counterterrorism and emergency response to complex field operations, enabling participating forces to critically evaluate and enhance collective strategies. Arabian Gulf Security 4 forms part of a wider series of periodic joint tactical exercises, initiated by GCC Interior Ministers, with the goal of reinforcing collective regional security and fostering a unified operational command structure. The first edition was held in Bahrain in 2016, followed by the second in the United Arab Emirates in 2019, and the third in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province in 2022. The ongoing fourth edition now highlights Qatar's pivotal role as a strategic host and active contributor to regional stability. This continued collaboration supports the GCC's broader mission of developing an integrated and agile security framework, as laid out in the Joint Security Agreement and in line with the GCC's collective security principles.
