His Excellency the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan al-Thani met separately with Iraqi Minister of Defence Thabet Muhammad Saeed al-Abbasi and Somalia’s Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi on the sidelines of the first day of the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (Dimdex 2026). During the meetings, HE Sheikh Saud signed a co-operation agreements with al-Abbasi and Fiqi, aimed at strengthening areas of joint co-operation in a manner that serves mutual interests and reinforces defence partnerships. The meetings and the signing ceremonies were attended by a number of senior officers and officials.

NATO member Turkey is holding talks with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to join a defence alliance established in September between the two countries, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Thursday."At present, there are discussions and talks underway, but no agreement has yet been signed," Fidan told reporters.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's "vision is broader, more comprehensive, and aimed at establishing a larger platform," he added.The defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, announced amid tensions in the Gulf region, raises many questions, particularly about its possible nuclear component, given Islamabad possesses nuclear weapons.The Pakistan-Saudi pact was signed just months after Pakistan and India fought an intense four-day conflict in May that killed more than 70 people on both sides in missile, drone and artillery fire, the worst clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours since 1999.Pakistan and India, also a nuclear power, have long accused each other of backing militant forces to destabilise one another.Saudi Arabia is believed to have played a key role in defusing the conflict. 

His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi co-chaired the third Qatari-Japanese Strategic Dialogue here Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in the deepening bilateral relationship between the two nations.  The comprehensive dialogue addressed prospects for advancing co-operation across multiple critical sectors, including trade, economy, investment, security and defence, education, healthcare, scientific and medical research, science and technology, tourism, infrastructure development, human resources development, and capacity building and training.  Both countries reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and peaceful means while conducting an extensive review of the latest regional and international developments.  In a separate bilateral meeting held on the same day, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and Motegi engaged in detailed discussions on ways to support and enhance the robust co-operation between their countries.  The talks covered the comprehensive agenda items of the strategic dialogue, along with several other matters of mutual interest to both nations. The PM emphasised that the third Qatari-Japanese Strategic Dialogue represents an important milestone in the close and growing relations between the two sides, which are firmly grounded in respect, trust, co-operation, friendship, and mutual interests.  He further noted that commercial, economic, and investment interests have formed the backbone of the strong relations between Qatar and Japan, praising the distinguished role of Japanese companies in Qatar's development process. Following the dialogue, the two nations issued a joint statement highlighting key areas of collaboration and shared vision.  The statement noted that the Qatar-Japan Strategic Dialogue serves as a testament to the strong partnership between the two countries, further reinforced by the announcement of a broader Strategic Partnership in 2023.  Both ministers commended the strength of bilateral relations and reviewed the substantial progress achieved since the Second Strategic Dialogue held in 2023. Both sides underscored the critical importance of strengthening economic and energy cooperation, with particular emphasis on energy security, stable supply, and enhanced collaboration in technology and innovation. They highlighted how trade, investment, and co-operation in advanced industries support economic growth and diversification in both countries.  The two countries also reiterated their commitment to defence and security co-operation, including collaboration on maritime security and freedom of navigation, aligned with shared interests in maintaining regional stability.  The ministers exchanged comprehensive views on global and regional developments, including the evolving situations in the Middle East, Israel-Palestine, Iran, Syria, and East Asian affairs, emphasising the vital importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and multilateral engagement in promoting lasting peace and stability.  Relevant working groups will continue to convene throughout 2026 to advance these objectives, with outcomes to be presented at the Fourth Qatar-Japan Strategic Dialogue scheduled to be held in Tokyo.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te Thursday said the island is determined ‌to defend its sovereignty and boost ‍its defence in the face of China’s increasing expansion, after Beijing fired rockets towards the island as part of military drills. The international community is watching to see whether the Taiwanese people possess the resolve to defend themselves, Lai said in a New Year’s ‍speech broadcast live from the presidential office in Taipei. “As president, my stance has always been clear: to resolutely defend national sovereignty and strengthen national defence,” Lai said, noting China had targeted Taiwan’s newly added combat capabilities as a “hypothetical adversary” in their drills this week. He said that demonstrated the need for increasing defence procurement, urging opposition parties to support his plan to boost Taiwan’s defence spending by $40bn, a proposal currently stuck alongside other issues in a ‌political deadlock in the opposition-controlled parliament. “Whether China can achieve its goals on schedule is one thing,” Lai said when asked about a US report saying China was preparing to have the capability to win a ‍fight for Taiwan by 2027. “The coming year, 2026, will be ‌a crucial one for Taiwan,” he said, adding Taiwan must “make plans for the worst, but hope for the best.” “We are willing to engage in exchanges and cooperation with China on an equal and dignified basis, promoting a peaceful and shared environment across the strait,” Lai said. “As long as China acknowledges the existence of the Republic of China, respects the Taiwanese people’s desire for a democratic and free way of life.” China claims Taiwan as its own territory, and it has not ruled out using force to take it under Chinese control. Taiwan rejects China’s claims. After Lai’s address, China said he was trying to deceive Taiwanese ​and mislead international public opinion. “Lai-Ching-te’s address ‌is riddled with lies and reckless assertions, hostility and malice,” a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said in comments reported by state broadcaster CCTV. Lai’s speech came just two ‍days after the Chinese exercises named “Justice Mission 2025”. China fired dozens of rockets towards Taiwan and deployed a large number of warships and aircraft near island in a show of force that drew concern from Western allies including the European Commission and Britain. Taipei condemned the drills as a threat to regional security and a blatant provocation. Beijing announced late on Wednesday that it had completed ​the drills, saying its military would continue to strengthen their combat-readiness. China’s President Xi Jinping struck a familiar tone on Taiwan in his New Year’s address late on Wednesday, repeating last year’s warning to what Beijing considers as separatist forces that China’s “reunification” with Taiwan can not be stopped. The drills, China’s largest by area and the closest yet to Taiwan, forced the island to cancel dozens of domestic commercial flights and dispatch military jets and warships to monitor the exercises. The Chinese manoeuvres began 11 days after the US had announced a record $11.1bn arms package for Taiwan. China’s military said for the first time that the drills were aimed at deterring outside intervention. 

Qatar's Milaha Group, in collaboration with Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri, held a workshop today titled "Underwater Innovation Forefront: Submarines, Drones and Dual-Use Integrated Solutions for Sea Defence and Strategic Infrastructures Resilience". The workshop showcased the latest technologies in submarines, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and autonomous underwater drones, highlighting applications for both defense and civilian purposes. Participants included officials and experts from Qatar's defense, energy, cybersecurity, and maritime sectors, as well as international representatives from Italy. Discussions focused on integrated command and control systems, dual-use solutions for maritime defense, and protection of strategic infrastructure, including undersea cables, energy platforms, and ports. The event also analyzed emerging threats to the maritime environment and explored advanced capabilities to ensure the reliability and continuity of offshore energy and critical infrastructure assets. Milaha Group CEO, Fahad bin Saad Al Qahtani, said the workshop aimed to analyze current threats to the maritime environment, present advanced technologies with defense and civilian applications, and strengthen cross-sector integration to safeguard the nation’s critical infrastructure. Al Qahtani emphasized Milaha's long-standing role in Qatar's maritime and energy sectors, noting that the company has been a strategic partner in national development since 1957 and continues to support the country's maritime and economic readiness. He described the collaboration with Fincantieri as a strategic step to combine Milaha's national expertise with Fincantieri's global capabilities in underwater systems and autonomous maritime platforms. Fincantieri presented its DEEP dynamic performance system during the workshop, an AI-powered integrated platform for underwater drones. The system, recently demonstrated at the Italian Navy's Support and Sea Trials Center in La Spezia, combines autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), early-warning sensors, launch and recovery solutions, and a dedicated management system to enable continuous monitoring and early threat detection in complex maritime environments. The workshop highlighted that 98% of global internet traffic relies on submarine cables, alongside power transmission systems that underpin national communications and energy security. Fincantieri emphasized its role as an underwater systems integrator, capable of designing, building, and operating all key components to bridge the gap between defense requirements and dual-use civilian applications. Rear Admiral Francesco Milazzo of the Italian Navy emphasized that the underwater domain is now a decisive arena requiring continuous innovation and synergies. He also highlighted the key role played by the Italian National Hub for Underwater (PNS - Polo Nazionale della Subacquea), as well as the Italian Navy's initiative to create a NATO Center of Excellence for the Underwater Domain. Meanwhile, Ambassador Massimo Marotti of the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency also highlighted the critical role of international cooperation and the partnership between governments and private players in addressing cyber risks that threaten underwater infrastructures.

A session of the Doha Forum 2025 held Saturday discussed defence policy, security, mediation in conflicts, and peacebuilding, under the title of "Iran and the Changing Regional Security Environment”.The session featured Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed al-Budaiwi, former Iranian foreign affairs minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and the director of Italy’s Institute of International Affairs Nathalie Tocci.The session was moderated by the executive vice-president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft in Washington, Dr Trita Parsi.The GCC secretary-general affirmed the council’s keenness on Iran’s stability and prosperity, stressing that no one in the GCC wished to see Iran collapse.Al-Budaiwi noted that the Gulf states had, over the past 7-8 decades, transformed into the world’s ninth-largest economy, with a collective GDP of about $2.4tn in 2024, and expressed the GCC’s desire to share these development experiences with Iran.He emphasised the need to respect the principles of good neighbourliness, adhere to the UN Charter, engage in dialogue, and refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other states.Al-Budaiwi added that the GCC’s expectations from Iran were simple and fundamental, similar to any normal relationship between neighbours.He highlighted that Iran embodies a rich civilisational, cultural, and artistic heritage, and stressed that the Gulf states have much to offer Iran, underlining the importance of focusing on a shared future.Zarif affirmed that Iran is capable of overcoming crises despite the challenges it had faced throughout history.He said that Iran had always been willing to engage in dialogue, referencing his 2017 proposal for a Regional Dialogue Forum (RDF) based on the UN Charter, good neighbourliness, non-interference, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.The former minister stressed the need to institutionalise the ongoing discussions between Iran and the GCC states and to build a shared vision for the future.Tocci warned of the growing risks facing the Gulf and Middle East regions, stating that the current situation requires practical steps to strengthen stability and build confidence among states.She stressed that external interventions had contributed to complicating the regional landscape, but were not the root cause of the problem, adding that the future lies in the hands of the regional states themselves rather than external powers.She underlined the need for commitment to dialogue, co-operation, and confidence-building through concrete actions. 

The Civil Defence in the Gaza Strip announced that its operations have effectively been reduced by 50% due to the lack of fuel needed to run emergency vehicles and rescue equipment.Spokesperson for the Civil Defence, Mahmoud Basal, told Qatar News Agency (QNA) Monday that field teams have been struggling for weeks to secure the fuel required to operate the remaining essential vehicles and equipment, including fire engines, rescue and ambulance vehicles, as well as portable power generators that run on gasoline and are critical for removing hazards and retrieving trapped individuals.He stressed that these tools form the backbone of firefighting, rescue missions, evacuation operations, and emergency response for civilians enduring dire humanitarian conditions under Israeli attacks. He warned that rescue teams can no longer reach thousands of damaged and unstable buildings, and that search and recovery efforts are on the verge of being completely shut down.Basal noted that a significant portion of the Civil Defence's response to fires, explosions, and building collapses has already stalled, posing an immediate threat to civilian lives. Despite appeals to UN agencies and international organizations to supply the needed fuel, Israeli-imposed restrictions continue to block the entry of sufficient quantities, with distribution mechanisms falling far short of operational needs. This, he said, has caused a major paralysis in the Civil Defence's ability to fulfill its humanitarian duties.He called for lifting all restrictions on fuel delivery and ensuring immediate and full operational supply, with a transparent and consistent mechanism that aligns with the scale of the emergency in Gaza.Despite the lack of equipment, Basal emphasised that efforts to recover the bodies of Palestinians martyred in Israeli occupation airstrikes continue. However, operations are progressing extremely slowly due to severe equipment shortages. Currently, only one excavator is operating in central Gaza in co-ordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross and specialised teams to retrieve bodies from beneath the rubble.He said that once work is completed in the central and southern areas, the excavator will move to Gaza City and the northern region. Basal stressed that a single excavator is insufficient given the enormous number of bodies, and that additional heavy machinery is urgently needed to complete the process as quickly and safely as possible.Basal also noted that some international organisations have expressed willingness to support recovery efforts and bring in heavy machinery. Still, so far, no additional equipment has entered Gaza aside from the one excavator currently in use.He described the issue of missing persons as a profoundly humanitarian crisis, with families submitting daily pleas for help in recovering their loved ones. He estimated that around 10,000 bodies remain under the rubble, though obtaining precise figures is extremely difficult due to the conditions on the ground and the lack of comprehensive documentation.Specialised committees have been formed to document and assess families targeted by Israeli occupation attacks who require urgent intervention by Civil Defence teams.Basal concluded by noting that although Israeli aggression on Gaza ceased following the October ceasefire agreement, which according to official and UN reports, left around 92% of residential buildings fully or partially destroyed, the Israeli occupation continues to block the entry of reconstruction materials, rubble removal equipment, and essential humanitarian supplies for sectors including health and water. This ongoing obstruction, in violation of the humanitarian protocol annexed to the ceasefire agreement, is crippling local, municipal, and international efforts to provide basic services to war-stricken residents of the Gaza Strip. 

Assistant Undersecretary for Security Affairs at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) Sheikh Nayef bin Faleh bin Saud al-Thani met Monday with Commissioner for European Affairs, Export Control, Security and Defence Industry at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Dr Robert Dieter. During the meeting, the two sides discussed areas of security co-operation between the two friendly countries.They further discussed ways to enhance the exchange of expertise to contribute to developing the security work system and supporting joint efforts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday he discussed his country's air defence needs with his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb after recent Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Zelenskiy, who is due to meet Donald Trump in Washington on Friday, also said it was important that the U.S. president had managed to stop the war in Gaza. "Of course, the right steps by America could also work to end Russia's war against Ukraine. We have a vision for this," Zelenskiy said, adding that he and Stubb were "coordinating" their positions.
