Israel launched a massive series of airstrikes on southern Lebanon yesterday, despite an extension of the truce between the two countries.Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah but the strikes were preceded by an evacuation warning covering nine villages. And the continuing bombardment has only increased scepticism about the truce among the Lebanese driven from their homes in the south.Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported strikes on more than two dozen villages yesterday, including one over 50km from the border.It also reported a new exodus of residents towards the southern city of Sidon and the capital Beirut. On Friday, the two countries agreed to extend a ceasefire, which began on April 17, by another 45 days.UN chief Antonio Guterres said yesterday that he “welcomes” the extension and “urges all actors to fully respect the cessation of hostilities”. Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues to conduct strikes in Lebanon, and its forces are occupying territory near the border.Hezbollah, meanwhile, regularly claims attacks on northern Israel and against the Israeli military in southern Lebanon. Israeli attacks since the start of the war have killed more than 2,900 people in Lebanon, including more than 400 since the truce took effect, according to Lebanese authorities.Israel has also reported the deaths of 19 soldiers in southern Lebanon since fighting with Hezbollah erupted. The latest strikes come after envoys from Israel and Lebanon held negotiations in Washington, following the first direct talks in decades last month between the two countries, which do not have diplomatic relations.They agreed to extend the ceasefire. Iran-backed Hezbollah opposes the negotiations and claimed an attack yesterday against Israeli troops in the Lebanese town of Khiam.The group justified their action by accusing Israel of ceasefire violations and “attacks that targeted villages in southern Lebanon”. Residents from southern Lebanon say the truce is not being implemented.“This is not a truce as long as Israeli attacks continue against the south and its people, with deaths, injuries and destruction,” said Ali Salameh, 60, from a school in Beirut where he has been displaced since the start of the war. “What kind of truce is this when they have just threatened villages and people are being displaced? Where is the state? We stand only with the resistance,” said Nawal Mezhir, also displaced from the south.Lebanon was dragged into the Middle East war on March 2 when Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei. On Friday, Israel struck the southern city of Tyre.“They destroyed the entire neighbourhood,” said Ibrahim Kahwaji, a tailor who was wounded in the leg. “They are emptying the south of its population... It’s a real occupation. We want a solution.” 

A man attacked by a shark off Western Australia’s coast yesterday died of his ​injuries, police said, in ‌what is the second ‌fatal shark ‌attack in Australia ‌so far this year. The 38-year-old victim, yet to be identified, was bitten on Saturday morning at Horseshoe Reef near Rottnest Island, about 31 km (19.2 miles) west of state capital Perth, ​police said in a statement. The man was taken to shore but could ‌not be revived, police said, adding ​that a report would ​be prepared for the coroner. State authorities advised people to take extra caution in the water at Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination. Aerial footage from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation showed a police boat, ‌police officers, and ‌a rescue helicopter with a stretcher at the scene. Most shark attacks occur along the east and southeast seaboard of Australia. 

The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) said Tuesday that six people were killed and seven others injured as Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon continued. It said that Israel launched an airstrike on an inhabited house in Kfar Dounine in southern Lebanon, killing six people and injuring seven others, in addition to carrying out two more strikes on the town of Srifa. The agency added that Israeli artillery shelling targeted the outskirts of the towns of Al Mansouri and Majdal Zoun. Warplanes also carried out a series of airstrikes on towns.  

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) said its air defence systems intercepted two ballistic missiles and three drones launched from Iran on Friday, as regional tensions continued to escalate. In a statement carried by the Emirates News Agency, the UAE Ministry of Defence said the latest attack resulted in three people sustaining moderate injuries. The ministry added that the country's air defences had intercepted 551 ballistic missiles, 29 cruise missiles and 2,263 drones since the beginning of the Iranian attacks on the UAE. According to the statement, the total number of injuries linked to the attacks has now risen to 230, including Emirati nationals as well as Arab and foreign residents. The UAE armed forces said they remained on "full alert" and were prepared to respond to any threats targeting the country’s security and stability. The ministry stressed that the military would respond firmly to any attempt to undermine national security, while ensuring the protection of the country's sovereignty, strategic interests and critical capabilities 

The United States struck Iranian military targets on Thursday after Tehran's forces attacked three American destroyers that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the US military said."Iranian forces launched multiple missiles, drones and small boats" at the three warships, but none were hit, the US military's Central Command said in a post on X.US forces "eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible" for the attack, it added.

Qatar has strongly condemned the Iranian attacks on the United Arab Emirates, involving two ballistic missiles and three drones, which resulted in injuries to three people. Qatar considered the attacks a blatant violation of the UAE's sovereignty and a serious threat to the security and stability of the region. In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed Qatar's full solidarity with the UAE and its support for all measures taken by the UAE to preserve its sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. The ministry also expressed Qatar's wishes for a speedy recovery for those injured.

incident.Azzam Khalil al-Hayya is the fourth of Khalil al-Hayya's seven sons to be killed in Israeli attacks, according to a Hamas source. Two of those were killed before the Gaza war erupted in October 2023.The third, Hammam, was killed in an Israeli strike targeting Hamas leaders in Doha in September, which killed six people.Khalil al-Hayya is the head of Hamas in Gaza despite living in exile in Qatar. He is currently vying for the leadership of the movement.He survived the strike on Doha.In a statement, Hamas said that the killing of Azzam Khalil al-Hayya "came within the framework of attempts to exert pressure on the resistance leadership and its negotiating delegation, after the occupation's failure to impose its conditions or achieve its declared objectives."The US-brokered ceasefire which came into effect in October has largely halted the Gaza war that began after Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.But Gaza remains gripped by daily violence as Israeli strikes continue, with both the military and Hamas accusing one another of violating the truce.At least 846 Palestinians have been killed since the truce began, according to Gaza's health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority and whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations.Over the same period, the Israeli military said five soldiers have been killed in Gaza.my-acc/ser 

The UAE said it was under attack from Iranian missiles and drones yesterday, which Iran categorically denied even as Washington insisted a four-week-old ceasefire remained intact. The Emirates’ foreign ministry called the attacks a serious escalation and a direct threat to its security, reserving its “full and legitimate right” to respond. The strikes followed a US naval push, dubbed “Project Freedom”, to escort stranded tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. The US military said it destroyed six Iranian small boats, cruise missiles and drones. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the operation was temporary and the truce held: “We’re not looking for a fight.” Iran’s Revolutionary Guards issued a new map expanding Tehran’s claimed control over the strait and warned vessels to stick to designated corridors or face a “decisive response”. (Reuters) 

Qatar strongly condemned the Iranian attack that targeted an Emirati tanker operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), which was struck by two drones while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a blatant violation of international law and the principle of freedom of maritime navigation, as well as a flagrant breach of Security Council Resolution No. 2817.In a statement Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated Qatar's categorical rejection of using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of pressure, calling for its unconditional reopening and affirming that freedom of navigation in this vital waterway is a firmly established principle that must not be compromised. It added that the continued closure of the Strait would jeopardise the vital interests of countries in the region.The ministry stressed the need to halt unjustified Iranian attacks on the property of fraternal states, reaffirming Qatar's full solidarity with the UAE and its support for all measures it may take to safeguard its assets.Meanwhile, the UAE Ministry of Defence announced that air defense systems were responding to missile and drone attacks fired from Iran. It added that four cruise missiles were also detected coming from Iran, while three Indian nationals were injured in the attacks. 

The UAE on Monday strongly condemned an Iranian drone attack on an ADNOC oil tanker in the blockaded Strait of Hormuz, as the US was due to start guiding ships through the waterway.Two drones hit the MV Barakah off the coast of Oman but no one was injured, according to ADNOC, the UAE state oil giant, adding that the ship was not loaded. "Targeting commercial shipping and using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of economic coercion or blackmail represents acts of piracy by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps," the United Arab Emirates foreign ministry said.The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency earlier reported that projectiles struck a ship in the same area late on Sunday. The latest incident came as President Donald Trump said the US would start guiding ships through the vital waterway from Monday.The US and Iran remain deadlocked in peace negotiations since a ceasefire in the Middle East war came into effect on April 8. Iran has maintained a stranglehold on the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and the United States has put in place a naval blockade in return.US Central Command said it would use guided-missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms and 15,000 service members to guide ships through the Hormuz strait. As of April 29, more than 900 commercial vessels were located in the Gulf, according to maritime intelligence firm AXSMarine. There had been more than 1,100 at the start of the conflict.Oil prices have rocketed since the closure of the strait, which normally carries one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas, threatening widespread economic damage.

A man who last year tried to enter Israel's London embassy armed with two knives and carrying a "martyrdom note" was yesterday convicted in ‌a London court of preparing an act of ​terrorism.Abdullah Albadri, 34, a ‌failed asylum seeker from Kuwait, attempted to breach ‌the embassy's ⁠perimeter in ‌April 2025 because he wanted to ‌send a message about "the killing of children", prosecutors said at ⁠his trial this month.Albadri denied charges of preparing an act of terrorism and possession of two bladed articles, telling police he had the knives because he was homeless, but a jury found him guilty yesterday.The verdicts came two days after two Jewish men were stabbed in ​north London in what police described as a suspected terrorist incident, adding to heightened fears within Britain's Jewish community.Last month, a pro-Iranian group ‌claimed online that it targeted ⁠the embassy ​with drones carrying "dangerous substances". Police later said they found ​no hazardous substances.Albadri was arrested by two armed officers as he tried to scale the fence outside the embassy in west London last April. Prosecutors said he later told police he wanted to send a message about stopping the war, a reference to the Israeli-Hamas conflict in Gaza."The prosecution say that Mr Albadri's intention was to use or threaten serious violence against the Israeli government, ‌to exact revenge for its ‌alleged murder of children," ⁠Catherine Pattison told jurors at the Old Bailey.Pattison said Albadri ⁠had arrived in ⁠Britain via a small boat on two occasions and most recently entered the country in April last year, when he applied for asylum, claiming he faced risks in Kuwait as a human rights activist.However, exchanges on his phone showed his asylum ​claim was rejected later that month, after which his intention began to shift to "far more sinister matters" and he started searching for the location of the Israeli embassy, Pattison said.Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said the Israeli embassy has faced a number of security alerts but police "continuously review and strengthen protective security plans to ensure the site ‌and the ​wider community is kept as safe as possible". 

Human remains have been found aboard a cargo ship struck by Iran while transiting the Strait of Hormuz last month, the vessel's owner said on Friday, after three crew members were reported missing following the attack.US-Israeli strikes on Iran late February prompted Tehran to respond by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial artery for global oil supplies.The Thai-flagged Mayuree Naree was struck in March while travelling through the strait after departing Khalifa port in the United Arab Emirates."Certain human remains were found within the affected area of the vessel," a statement from transport company Precious Shipping said on Friday, adding it could not yet confirm the identities or the number of individuals.Twenty Thai crew members returned home in mid-March, while three of their colleagues were missing and presumed trapped in the damaged engine compartment.A search was carried out under "challenging conditions" as the vessel's engine room had been flooded and damaged by fire, the company said.Thailand's foreign ministry said it was "saddened" by the development and that families of the missing crew had been informed.Iran's Revolutionary Guards said in March they had struck the Mayuree Naree, as well as a Liberia-flagged vessel, in the strait because the ships had ignored "warnings".
