Qatar University (QU) is fully prepared to welcome students for the Fall 2026 semester, with academic, administrative and support services in place to ensure a smooth start and support students' academic success and university experience, Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Mohammed Diab said. Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr. Diab said the university currently has 30,000 students enrolled, with the number expected to rise as admission and registration for the Fall 2026 semester are completed. He said the university, its colleges and its administrative and support units are ready for the start of the new academic year. Dr. Diab said student success and empowerment are among the university's top priorities, backed by a comprehensive range of academic, psychological and social support services. These include academic advising, student counseling, learning support and career development programs designed to strengthen students' skills and prepare them for academic and professional success.  He also outlined efforts to enhance the university's academic programs and align them with the evolving needs of the labor market, alongside preparations covering student services and facilities, as well as activities and programs tailored to new students. As part of those preparations, classrooms, laboratories and other facilities have been equipped with the latest technologies, Dr. Diab said. Staff have also finalized class schedules and ensured that facilities are ready to support teaching and learning and provide a conducive environment for students. He said all colleges and administrative and support units are ready for a smooth start to the semester, with particular attention to new students. Academic registration is available through the university's website, he added, urging students to consult their academic advisors and choose their courses carefully to stay on track in their studies.The university is also placing particular emphasis on helping new students settle into university life through "Hayyakum - Fall 2026," an orientation event designed to familiarize them with academic and administrative services, university regulations and available resources, Dr. Diab said. The event is intended to help students make a confident start to university life. He said the event brings together various university support and service units under one roof, allowing students to meet academic advisors and learn about available services. It also features orientation workshops on university regulations and policies, digital platforms, academic success strategies and adapting to university life, as well as campus tours and interactive activities aimed at helping students integrate into the university community and develop a sense of belonging from the outset. Dr. Diab also highlighted Qatar University's Open Day, which gives students from public and private schools and their parents an opportunity to explore university life and learn about the academic majors and programs on offer. The event enables prospective students and their families to meet representatives of various colleges and university units and learn about available student services, helping them make informed decisions about their academic choices and gain a clearer picture of life at Qatar University. Dr. Diab stressed that student success and empowerment remain central to the university's priorities, supported by a comprehensive range of academic, psychological and social services. These include the Academic Advising Center, Student Learning Support Center and Student Counseling Center, as well as specialized centers focused on developing students' skills and preparing them for the workplace, including the Career Development Center.  Dr. Diab urged students to complete their registration, familiarize themselves with their class schedules and lecture locations ahead of the start of the semester, attend classes regularly, and take an active part in university activities to ensure a successful start to their university experience.On the university's curriculum development plans, he said QU is continuously updating its academic programs to meet the needs of the Qatari labor market and support national development goals. Over the past year and during the current academic year, the university has revised its curricula and introduced specialized courses in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence and the creative industries.He said the aim is to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to meet the demands of the modern labor market, stressing that the university's mission extends beyond classroom education. It also seeks to help students make informed choices about fields of study that are in demand in Qatar and offer strong career prospects.He added that the Student Affairs sector, through its various student support centers, organizes career fairs and offers programs and training courses to help students understand the Qatari labor market and Tasweer Photo Festival marked World Photography Day yesterday by recognising 30 photographers, highlighting the growing role of the visual medium in nurturing talent, storytelling and international dialogue. The celebration, held at the Fire Station Cinema, saw the announcement of winners of the Tasweer 2026 Project Award and Single Image Award, recognising promising photographers and supporting them as they develop their artistic practice. Khalifa Ahmad al-Obaidly, director of Tasweer Photo Festival, told ‘Gulf Times’ that the annual awards were designed to provide meaningful support to photographers at different stages of their creative journeys. “We have 20 winners in the Single Image Award and 10 winners in the Project Award,” al-Obaidly said. The Project Award provides each of the 10 selected photographers with QR30,000, which can be used to develop further their work, including producing a book or purchasing equipment. “It is like a grant,” he explained. “They get QR30,000 each to support them to do a book or buy gear, and to take the next step in their photography.” Meanwhile, the 20 winners of the Single Image Award each receive QR2,000 in prize money, encouraging emerging photographers and younger talent. For al-Obaidly, however, the significance of photography extends far beyond awards and financial support. He described the medium as an essential form of communication, particularly for younger generations. “Photography is an expression,” he said. “Somebody can communicate through a photograph, be inspired by a photograph and get the news from a photograph.” He added: “Imagine life without photos, that’s impossible, because it is embedded in our lives every minute.” Al-Obaidly said learning the fundamentals of photography could help individuals communicate more effectively and strengthen the messages they wish to convey. “A picture is a message,” he said. “It is expressing the person, expressing what they are seeing. It is a very important area for people to tell others about themselves.” The quality and diversity of this year’s submissions also impressed the competition’s jury. Ehsan Nassar, a professor of history specialising in the history of photography and a first-time member of the jury, said selecting the finalists had been a challenging task. “I was extremely impressed by the talents I saw,” Nassar told Gulf Times. “There were very promising artists from throughout the Arab world and the world in general.” “It was not easy to choose the finalists because most of the works submitted were wonderful,” he added. Nassar stressed that developing skills in photography and the wider arts benefits not only individual artists, but also society by creating connections across borders. “Such skills in photography and art in general are very important,” he said. “They develop talents, but they also create an international dialogue between people from different parts of the world.”

The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) Index closed this week down 3.38 %, losing 338.27 points to reach 9,682 points compared with last week's close. The decline was driven by negative performances across all sectors, led by the telecommunications sector, which fell by around 4.61%, followed by the consumer goods and services sector, down 3.78%, and the industrial sector, which declined 3.56%. Commenting on QSE's weekly performance, financial analyst Mubarak al-Tamimi told the Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the index continued its decline this week amid selling pressure, ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, and the absence of catalysts related to semiannual dividend distributions. He described the current situation facing the Qatar Stock Exchange as a "strong correction," driven by external factors and pressure on leading stocks, particularly those in the banking sector. Al-Tamimi explained that the current conditions do not necessarily signal the beginning of a long-term downward trend, noting that the 9,528-point level remains an important technical support level that could attract the attention of market makers and investors seeking buying opportunities at lower prices. He said the index had lost key levels at 10,205 and 10,100 points, reinforcing negative pressures and prompting investors to exercise greater caution. He added that expectations point to a possible further decline towards the 9,528-point level, which could represent an area for liquidity to enter the market and for market makers and investors to make gradual purchases. Al-Tamimi noted that despite the continued short-term negative outlook, a decline to the historical low of 9,165 points recorded in May 2022 remains unlikely at this stage, unless geopolitical risks escalate significantly. He highlighted positive opportunities for medium-and long-term investors at support levels, particularly in leading stocks with strong fundamentals.

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani met on Wednesday with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and President-elect of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly Dr Khalilur Rahman, who is visiting Qatar.At the beginning of the meeting, His Excellency congratulated Dr Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly, expressing his best wishes for his success.During the meeting, they discussed bilateral cooperation relations and ways to support and strengthen them along with the latest regional and international developments, in addition to a number of issues of common interest.They also exchanged views on prospects for cooperation between the State of Qatar and the United Nations in addressing global challenges, particularly in the areas of peacebuilding, sustainable development, and climate change.

The Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) has published Rally Guide 1 and released initial details of this year’s Qatar International Baja.The Lusail-based event will take from October 28 to 31 and is the penultimate round of both the FIA World and Middle East Baja Cups and round six of the FIM Bajas World Cup.Known throughout cross-country circles as one of the most challenging Bajas in both the FIA and FIM calendars, this year’s event will be no exception and features several tweaks and improvements on last autumn’s edition. It runs under the chairmanship of QMMF President Abdulrahman al-Mannai, QMMF’s Executive Director Amro al-Hamad and General Secretary Abdulrazaq al-Kuwari.Clerk of the Course Pedro Almeida and the team at the QMMF have worked hard to fine-tune the Baja and the 2026 edition will feature a private test for the first time on Wednesday, October 28th to enable competitors to carry out any last-minute set-up changes and to prevent the indiscriminate use of other desert tracks.The 2026 edition offers an extended route and an additional 18.4% of competitive kilometres. Riders and drivers will tackle 538.44km against the clock in a total route of 940.28km.A Prologue of 9.51km will be held on Thursday, October 29th to determine the starting orders for the first competition the following morning.A gruelling opening day’s action on Friday, October 30th through the deserts of northern and central Qatar will see competitors racing over 336.34 competitive kilometres – this will be the longest selective section in the entire FIA World Baja Cup and on a par with stages in the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) in terms of difficulty and variety.The second selective section on Saturday, October 31st has been trimmed by 13.7% to 202.10km to allow for an earlier conclusion to the Baja. The route will pass through the unique landscapes of southern Qatar and includes a pass through the demanding dunes in the Sealine region in the southeast of the country.Administration checks, scrutineering, the ceremonial start and finish and all servicing will be carried out in the confines of the Lusail International Circuit for ease and convenience and to reduce the event’s environmental impact.Entries open and the Supplementary Regulations will be published on Wednesday, September 2nd. The first closure for entries has been set for Wednesday, September 30th with a final cut-off on Wednesday, October 14th.Full details will be announced in the regulations but the QMMF has already confirmed that entrants in the FIA categories from the GCC will be offered a shipping allowance of $2,500, with international entrants receiving $5,000.Flight ticket allowances extend to $700 per GCC crew and $1,400 for overseas competitors. FIM entrants will receive $1,250 and $2,500 for shipping, respectively, and $350 or $700 towards air travel.Accommodation in a twin room for five nights with breakfast is available to FIA and FIM competitors, in addition to QR4000 start money for entries received before the first cut-off (QR2000 – FIM) and QR3000 (QR1500 – FIM) thereafter until the closure date.The QMMF has also worked closely with the EMSO – the organisers of the Dubai International Baja – to arrange a consolidated shipping offer, free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis to competitors entered in both events. This has been done in conjunction with DSV logistics.They will arrange one closed box truck and one open car transporter truck to collect material and equipment from the Qatar service park and deliver by road on a three-day transit to the Dubai International Baja. The DSV contact is Arshed Ahmed, Email: [email protected] and Tel: + 971 56 5468698.For further Qatar Baja event information, competitors and teams can contact Davy Patterson, Competitor Liaison Officer (CRO), Email: [email protected] and WhatsApp: +44 7980 613944.
