The State of Qatar participated in the work of the 64th session of the two United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Body meetings held in Bonn, Germany, as part of the preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31), scheduled to be held in Antalya, Türkiye, in November.The State of Qatar’s delegation was headed by Assistant Undersecretary for Climate Change Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) Eng. Ahmad Mohammed Al Sada, along with a number of government agencies in the country.Participation included attending official sessions, technical consultations, and meetings of negotiating groups, which discussed the implementation of the Paris Agreement, adaptation to the impacts of climate change, climate transparency, providing financing to developing countries, transfer of modern technologies, capacity building, and training of national cadres.The meetings also discussed ways to support countries in implementing their climate plans, and to enhance international cooperation to address the effects of climate change, in addition to a number of issues that will be presented at COP31.The participants stressed the importance of reaching practical and balanced results that take into account the circumstances and capabilities of countries, and contribute to strengthening the implementation of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.Adherence to the principle of equity and common responsibilities was also emphasized, taking into account the different capabilities and national circumstances of countries, and providing the necessary support to developing countries to implement their climate plans and achieve their development goals.The Bonn meetings are a key milestone in the course of international climate negotiations, as they provide a platform to discuss technical issues and bring countries closer together, in preparation for reaching consensus outcomes during COP31.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change launched the first phase of its electronic inspection system, designed to digitally manage, implement, and monitor environmental inspection and oversight activities to accelerate procedures, enhance the efficiency of regulatory operations, and improve the quality of services provided to individuals and businesses.In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry explained that the system covers the issuance of inspection orders, documentation of inspection reports, and the monitoring of inspection outcomes and procedures related to violations. The initiative is part of the Ministry’s efforts to protect the environment and preserve natural resources through the development of digital regulatory mechanisms that support environmental sustainability.The system also enables the electronic management of inspection orders and reports, the review and approval of inspection results, integration with security centers, and the provision of a smart application that allows inspectors to carry out field operations more efficiently and quickly.The Ministry further emphasized its commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the project through periodic reviews to assess the system’s effectiveness and success in achieving its objectives. These assessments will rely on performance indicators such as compliance rates, the number of violations, and response levels, while continuous improvements will be implemented based on evaluation results.

QatarEnergy LNG sponsored and recently presented the Best Overall Prizes to the winning teams at the 22nd Annual Chemical Engineering Plant Design Competition, organised by the Department of Chemical Engineering at Qatar University (QU). Since its inception in 2004, this annual contest aims to provide QU students with world-class engineering experience, nurturing the next generation of engineering talent. In his address at a special ceremony held at QatarEnergy LNG’s Doha headquarters on May 24, Rashid al-Kuwari, Chief Engineering and Projects Officer at QatarEnergy LNG, noted that supporting and encouraging education is a cornerstone of QatarEnergy LNG’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme and an important part of the company’s commitment to premier performance. By investing in the next generation of engineers, he said QatarEnergy LNG is contributing to the future of the industry and to the greater prosperity and advancement of the nation, which aligns with the human, social, and economic development pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030. This competition demonstrates the exceptional capabilities of students in transforming theoretical knowledge into practical, real industrial challenges. Every year, QatarEnergy LNG is impressed by the technical depth, creativity, and professionalism demonstrated in the projects. QatarEnergy LNG was joined at the event by Professor Dr Mohammed al-Marri, head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at QU, to present prizes to the winning teams. Each group gave a brief presentation on their plant design project and the innovative solutions they developed. The event also recognised judges, advisors, Prof al-Marri, Associate Professor Dr Zeinab Jawad, Professor Dr Fadwa Eljack, representatives from the Department of Chemical Engineering at QU, and QatarEnergy LNG representative, Eman Elhmoud, head of Process & Flow Assurance Engineering, and Rand Aga, CSR specialist. Prof al-Marri highlighted in his opening remarks that the annual Plant Design Competition represents the department’s flagship event, celebrating graduating senior students. He thanked QatarEnergy LNG for its continued support over the past 22 years and extended special thanks to the judges for their valuable contributions to the competition’s success. This year, 10 teams presented their projects to a panel of industry judges. Working over two semesters, the students developed simulation-based grassroots plant designs and completed several engineering tasks, including process simulation, environmental impact assessment, heat integration, mechanical equipment design, safety analysis, and economic evaluation. The students developed designs related to Liquefied Natural Gas, Ethylene, and Dimethyl Ether production processes. The competition was held on May 7 at QU’s Engineering Building, featuring five female teams and five male teams. The competition was of an exceptionally high standard, and the best three teams were selected by the judging panel, comprised of engineering experts from multiple industrial partners in Qatar, including Mathew Swatton, technology team lead at Qatar Shell GTL Limited; Abdulla al-Emadi, lead of Process Engineering at QatarEnergy LNG; Awad al-Yafei, head of Plant Productivity at Qafco; Ahmed M Homssi, environmental manager at QChem; and Sarah al-Raeesi, senior APC Engineer (POT) – Technical at OryxGTL. The evaluation criteria for the competition included Organisation and Structure, Technical Content, Visual Aids, and Teamwork. First place was awarded to the team of Shahd Murtada, Mona Foroohar, Shimaa Asem, and Rawan Tayseer Abunada for their outstanding design of an ethylene plant (ETHYQ). By utilising Technip’s advanced SMK technology, the plant is designed to produce polymer-grade ethylene with a purity exceeding 99.9%. The project combines high-performance production with innovative sustainability solutions, including waste-heat recovery that supplies nearly one-third of the plant’s steam demand and a CO2 capture system achieving 90% carbon removal efficiency. They were supervised by Professor Dr Ibnelwaleed Ali Hussein. Second place was awarded to the team of Mohammad Jaber Alathba, Mohamed Ashraf, Mohamed Dahri, and Khalid Hamad al-Jabri for their innovative design of Dimethyl Ether (DME) Plant. Two production routes, Direct and Indirect DME synthesis, were evaluated technically, environmentally, and economically, with the Direct route selected as the preferred option due to its lower COx emissions and superior financial performance. The project included the mechanical design of major equipment validated using Aspen HYSYS and HTRI Xchanger Suite. The team was supervised by Assistant Professor Dr Seckin Karagoz. Third place went to the team of Amira al-Kebsi, Fatima Abdulla al-Samra, Noora Khalili, and Elham Dabwan for their Qatar Ethygreen Company (QEGCO) Ethylene Production. The process technologies were based on Score by KBR, and, with integration and adjustments, a plant simulation that utilised waste heat recovery, minimised NOX emissions, and reduced the overall carbon footprint was developed. The most notable adjustment was the integration of a carbon capture unit, which would operate towards methanation, providing an alternative fuel source for the plant. The team was supervised by Professor Dr Fadwa Eljack.

Qatar Chamber recently set up a new Technology and Innovation Committee to accelerate digital transformation across the country's private sector, with an open invitation extended to German technology firms to join the body.The committee aims to support business digital transformation, promote technology adoption, and strengthen cooperation with global innovation partners, according to Qatar Chamber board member Mohamed bin Ahmed al-Obaidli.Al-Obaidli made the remarks while participating in the first panel session of the 29th Arab-German Business Forum in Germany, held under the theme 'Partner Country Qatar – Navigating Global Change: Investment, Innovation, and Strategic Cooperation in Times of Uncertainty'.The session, moderated by Ghorfa president Olaf Hoffmann, examined Qatar's position as a stable and diversified global hub driven by its economic spread across energy, infrastructure, technology, aviation, tourism, and education.It also addressed the impact of geopolitical shifts on global trade and Qatar's innovation-led development model, as well as the country's economic partnership with Germany.Al-Obaidli described the committee as a bridge connecting technology providers, investors, policymakers, academia, startups, and the private sector to convert innovation into measurable economic value and business growth.He added that the committee also seeks to strengthen Qatar's standing as a globally connected digital economy hub, enabling businesses to tap into international markets and new digital opportunities.On a practical level, the committee will support SMEs and larger enterprises through digital transformation programmes, AI adoption initiatives, startup-corporate collaboration, innovation partnerships, cybersecurity readiness, workforce upskilling, and access to funding and technology ecosystems, al-Obaidli noted.During the forum discussions, al-Obaidli said Germany is among the most prominent trading partners of Arab countries, with bilateral trade reaching approximately €57.6bn in 2024.He also noted that joint investments between Germany and Arab countries have helped cement longstanding economic ties between both sides.On the Qatar-Germany relationship specifically, al-Obaidli pointed out that more than “300” German companies are active in the Qatari market across sectors including energy, technology, services, construction, railways, telecommunications, and medical devices and equipment.Germany ranks as the third-largest European destination for Qatari investments, while Qatar stands as one of the largest investors in the German economy, with investments totalling around €25bn, he stated.Al-Obaidli said Qatar Chamber has a role in building communication channels between the business communities of both countries, facilitating investment and trade partnerships, and turning the bilateral relationship into tangible economic projects.He added that Qatar Chamber's engagement with Germany will extend beyond trade volumes to leading strategic partnerships in innovation, entrepreneurship, and joint investment in technology and advanced industry. 

The Qatar Stock Exchange's general index closed this week's trading session higher by 2.41%, gaining 247.040 points to reach 10,510 points compared to the previous week, supported by gains across most sectors.The transport sector recorded the highest gains with an increase of 6.320%, followed by the banking and financial services sector at 4.15%, while the telecommunications sector declined by 0.510%.Financial analyst Mubarak al-Tamimi told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the QSE index is still moving within a sideways range between key support and resistance levels, noting that the 10,770-point level remains the most important resistance barrier, which the index has failed to break since April.He added that the fundamental factors supporting the market have begun to improve, pointing out that positive regional developments are expected to boost investor confidence and increase risk appetite in regional markets, including Qatar's.Al-Tamimi explained that successfully breaking through this level and closing above it would provide the market with renewed positive momentum, pushing the index toward 11,052 points as a first target, followed by 11,515 points in the next phase.He also noted that investors are awaiting the announcement of second-quarter 2026 earnings results for listed companies, which will play a key role in determining the market's direction in the coming period.Results that meet or exceed expectations would provide additional support for the index and increase the likelihood of continued upward movement toward the targeted levels.He further stated that the periodic review results of the FTSE indices are expected to enhance liquidity and attract additional foreign investment flows into the market, which could support an upward correction in the general index.The analyst concluded that the 10,770-point level remains the key determinant of the next market direction, as breaking it would strengthen the chances of entering a new upward phase targeting 11,052 points and then 11,515 points, supported by improving economic fundamentals, corporate earnings, and expected investment inflows.
