Interactive activities, bilingual publications and art-inspired literary programmes are helping Qatar Reads cultivate a stronger reading culture in Qatar as the initiative continues to expand its reach at this year’s Doha International Book Fair (DIBF).“So far, every year, what we find is that we are able to reach a wider audience full of people who actually enjoy reading. It’s nice to interact with people one-on-one and show them rather than just letting them read about it,” Marwah Rida of Qatar Reads told 'Gulf Times' on the sidelines of the 35th edition of the fair.She cited initiatives such as the family reading programme for children and the “One Book One Doha” project, which caters to readers of all ages. Rida noted that Qatar Reads has been participating in the annual event for more than five years, using the platform to highlight its programmes for children, teenagers and adults.“Every year we try to bring light to all the different programmes that we have,” she said, adding that Qatar Reads seeks to promote Arabic literature by publishing books in both Arabic and English to ensure wider accessibility.Selected titles are released in three versions — one for children, another for teenagers and a special edition based on the original text with added features, she said.According to Rida, the organisation’s booth at the fair is divided into sections that reflect the goals and identity of each initiative. Interactive spaces for children, informative corners for adults and colourful displays are designed to make reading more engaging for visitors.She described the growth of the family reading programme as one of Qatar Reads’ biggest achievements, noting that more than 1,000 families are currently subscribed to the initiative. Rida said children aged between two and 13 are encouraged to read at least two books every month as part of the programme, which aims to build reading habits from an early age.“A lot of people don’t read a lot, so the idea is to encourage people to read from a young age,” she said. “That’s why we start from two years old.” Qatar Reads also combines literature and art to attract a broader audience.She highlighted the “Fables in Fashion” exhibition, where artists are invited to read a featured book and create artwork inspired by their interpretation of the story.The exhibition welcomes students from primary schools to universities, as well as members of the public, to explore the artworks and discover the featured book in a gallery-style experience. “Art is always a fun way to express your opinion, and it grabs people’s attention,” Rida said, adding that the initiative encourages visitors to engage with literature in a creative and accessible way.Qatar Reads, an initiative under the auspices of Qatar National Library, aims to promote reading and foster knowledge, critical thinking and social development through its programmes and activities.Organised by the Ministry of Culture, this year’s DIBF has brought together 520 publishing houses from 37 Arab and foreign countries across 910 booths featuring more than 1.85mn books and around 231,000 titles.The fair, which opened on May 14 and runs until May 23 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, also features 143 book launches, 46 panel discussions, 69 workshops and 46 seminars, attracting authors, researchers, educators, students and visitors from across Qatar and beyond.

The recent visit of the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to Doha carries exceptional significance, as it comes at a highly sensitive regional time characterised by increasing challenges and critical developments, according to Turkish ambassador Dr Mustafa Goksu. The envoy said the visit witnessed high-level diplomatic engagement, as Fidan was received by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. He also held an official, expanded round of talks with HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as an important meeting with HE Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan al-Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs. Dr Goksu noted that the significance of the visit lies in conveying a firm message warning against the risks of an expanding conflict and reaffirming the mutual support for constructive mediation efforts aimed at de-escalation. He stressed the commitment of both Ankara and Doha to safeguarding regional stability and preventing the resumption of military operations, given their catastrophic repercussions for international peace and security and the global economy. The envoy also pointed to the full convergence of views between the two countries, emphasising that the statements made by Fidan — in which he underlined that Israeli expansionism represents “the primary problem” and the main threat to regional stability and security — reflect a deeply rooted and shared strategic position between Ankara and Doha. He added that the expansionist and aggressive policies pursued in Gaza, Lebanon, the West Bank, and Syria have claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people and triggered waves of forced displacement that have turned millions of rightful inhabitants into refugees facing severe humanitarian conditions. Accordingly, Dr Goksu reiterated Turkiye’s full support for Qatar’s tireless efforts to defuse and resolve crises through diplomacy and effective mediation, noting that the two brotherly countries constitute an integrated pillar of stability and consistently support one another’s initiatives across international platforms. The envoy concluded his statement by affirming that these discussions reflect the strong political will of the leaderships of both countries to play an active and influential role in resolving regional crises, while embodying their mutual commitment to coordinating positions and enhancing joint co-operation. He stressed the steadfast position of both countries in supporting the resilience of the brotherly Palestinian people and adhering to the two-state solution as the sole strategic path toward achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.

The 35th Doha International Book Fair (DIBF), organised by the Ministry of Culture, is set to kick off tomorrow (May 14) at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC), featuring broad participation from Arab and international publishing houses and a diverse cultural programme. This year’s fair will showcase over 1.85mn books, including 231,000 titles, with 520 publishing houses representing 37 countries participating. A total of 919 booths will be dedicated to exhibitors. The event will also include the launch of 143 new books, 46 panel discussions, 69 workshops, and 46 seminars held on the main stage. The exhibition places great emphasis on children and young adults, dedicating five interactive zones to them. These zones include studios and educational and recreational activities. A mobile book bus will also be launched, visiting 12 schools to promote a culture of reading among students and encourage them to explore and acquire knowledge. A series of diverse cultural and intellectual events will be held alongside the exhibition, including seminars, lectures, and specialised workshops in various fields. These events will feature a distinguished group of intellectuals, writers, and academics from both within Qatar and abroad. Among the highlights of this year’s edition is the continuation of the DIBF Award for Qatari and international publishers and authors. Furthermore, there is broad participation from embassies, ministries, and Arab and international cultural institutions, reflecting the exhibition’s prominent cultural standing at both the regional and international levels. Fadaat Media Group is preparing to participate in the 35th DIBF with a distinctive pavilion that brings together Al-Araby2 TV, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper, and the Al-Araby Plus app. The pavilion will be open at the DECC from May 14 to 23. The joint pavilion will offer a comprehensive interactive experience, allowing visitors to learn about the organisation’s various media platforms through visual content and digital experiences that reflect the evolution of modern media work. This will enhance the visitors’ experience and bring them closer to the nature and conditions of media work. Content and materials produced by Al-Araby2 TV and Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper will also be showcased, highlighting prominent coverage and distinguished field reports. The pavilion will also introduce the organisation’s platforms and give the public the opportunity to learn about modern media practices. The exhibition will feature a special live broadcast of the programme Dhafaf on Al-Araby 2 channel, highlighting the exhibition, the most prominent participating publishing houses, and including interviews with participants and visitors. These events reflect Fadaat Media’s commitment to enhancing direct interaction with the public and transforming the pavilion into a vibrant space that blends modern media with digital platforms, aligning with the DIBF’s nature as a platform that unites knowledge and creativity. 

Al Faisal Global Foundation for Culture and Knowledge, in collaboration with Al Faisal Publishing House, will launch its latest publication, titled Banu Tamim in Al-Andalus: The Civilisational Role, at the Doha International Book Fair, (DIBF) scheduled from May 14 to 23. The 662-page book is based on an academic study that utilises historical sources and references to document the arrival of the Banu Tamim tribe in Al-Andalus, their settlements, and their civilisational contributions to Qur’anic sciences, Hadith, and Jurisprudence (Fiqh). It also highlights the names of Banu Tamim scholars in Al-Andalus and their contributions to linguistics, grammar, literature, history, administration, governance, Shura (consultation), the judiciary, and other fields. In his foreword to the book, HE Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani, chairman of Al Faisal Global Foundation for Culture and Knowledge, stated: “In this valuable book, Banu Tamim in Al-Andalus: The Civilisational Role, I found an objective scientific study stemming from a civilisational vision far removed from boastfulness or tribalism. It aims to document the contribution of Arab tribes — including Tamim — in shaping the scientific and humanitarian landscape of Al-Andalus.” He added: “The book traces the significant role played by Banu Tamim in Andalusian civilisation in terms of knowledge, thought, administration, and culture, presenting names and evidence of their contributions across numerous sciences.” HE Sheikh Faisal emphasised that this book is not merely a historical narrative, but a call to draw inspiration from the values of knowledge and work upheld by our ancestors, to elevate our present and future. He expressed his hope that this work would serve as a qualitative addition to studies preserving the heritage of the Arab and Islamic nations and their role in the journey of human civilisation. For his part, the author, Dr Abdul-Rab al-Sanawi, associate professor of History and Civilisation at Hodeidah University in Yemen, noted that the idea for this study began years ago when he sought to conduct limited research on a specific figure or family from the Banu Tamim groups in Al-Andalus. This was prompted by the frequent mention of many prominent Andalusian figures and noble families tracing their lineage to this great Arab tribe, renowned for its deep-rooted history and significant historical events. He added that, based on the data from the reviewed sources, it was concluded that the noble Arab tribe of Tamim deserved a dedicated volume to document the contributions of its figures across various fields throughout the stages of Andalusian history. He emphasised that it is a history rich in civilisational achievements that we take pride in as a nation, serving as a vital lesson for the nation today to learn what best serves its present and the future of its generations.
