The Al-Watan Theatre Troupe is preparing to present its play The Black Pearl as part of the 38th Doha Theatre Festival.The work is a fantastical journey inspired by the elements of the Gulf's marine environment, reinterpreting tales of pearl diving within a dramatic framework imbued with human and intellectual dimensions.The play is written and directed by artist Shua'il al-Kuwari, featuring a group of young members of the troupe.Its plot revolves around “the Black Pearl”, a rare and deep pearl diving site that becomes a symbol of the struggle between humanity and the unknown, and between the desire to reach one's dreams and the fear of the path to them.The story begins when a father stipulates that a man wishing to marry his daughter must bring him a pearl from this mysterious pearl diving site as her dowry.Thus begins a journey filled with challenges, during which the characters reveal multifaceted aspects of ambition, love, sacrifice, and willpower.Al-Kuwari affirmed that The Black Pearl uses heritage as a vehicle to express broader human issues, noting that the sea in the Gulf's collective memory has been a space brimming with stories, experiences, and situations that have shaped the community's consciousness.He explained that the choice of the pearl as the play's central theme stemmed from its symbolic significance, as the search for pearls becomes an introspective journey for individuals to discover their capabilities and confront their fears.He pointed out that the play blends reality and imagination to present a contemporary vision of heritage.Al-Kuwari indicated that preparations for the performance began some time ago, focusing on character development, acting and movement training, and attention to visual elements and scenography to enhance the atmosphere of the sea and the imagined world in which the events unfold.The outline has been finalised, and the play is currently refining the details and elevating all aspects of the production.Al-Kuwari added that the participation of a group of young people in the play represents an opportunity to showcase new talent on stage, emphasising that teamwork among the cast members was one of the most important factors in achieving the play's final form.The team also agreed on the importance of participating in the Doha Theatre Festival as a platform for testing and developing theatrical experiences, especially given the competition among diverse productions representing local theatre groups.The Black Pearl is expected to offer an experience that blends popular memory with a modern theatrical vision, through a story that evokes the atmosphere of the sea and pearl diving, but at its core poses questions about humanity, its choices, and its ability to confront the unknown.

Qatar is moving away from its traditional reliance on government-to-government import agreements toward a private sector-driven model for food security, an official of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has said.Abdullah Zeini Jefri, IFC’s division director for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries, told Gulf Times the shift is both deliberate and necessary for the country’s longer-term development ambitions.“For Qatar’s Vision 2030 to achieve its full potential, it has to rely on the growth of the private sector. We’re identifying through an evidence-based roadmap the opportunities for the private sector to help secure a more resilient food security for Qatar, while also identifying and creating commercially successful investment opportunities,” he said.Jefri said the advantage of bringing private capital into food security is that it serves multiple objectives simultaneously, rather than treating security and profit as competing goals.“You achieve your objectives of securing food security, but at the same time you create commercially successful investment opportunities, you create jobs, and you diversify your supply chains,” he noted.Asked whether Qatar’s private sector has the capacity to take on that role, Jefri said it does, adding that “there is room for further growth.”Together with the US-Qatar Business Council – Doha (USQBC Doha), the IFC launched Wednesday a new roadmap to enhance agrifood investment in Qatar, aimed at boosting food security.The event, themed ‘Profit with a Purpose – Harnessing Qatari Investments for Advancing Agrifood Security’, marked the publication of the study ‘Building Resilient Food Systems: A Roadmap for Qatar’s South-South Agrifood Investments in Emerging and Developing Markets’.According to Jefri, the event’s theme captures IFC’s operating philosophy precisely. The corporation, he explained, does not deploy grants or public funding, a deliberate choice rooted in long-term sustainability.“Our main objective is sustainable private sector investment. To achieve that, you need two components. One, for it to be profitable, because if it’s not profitable, it’s not going to be sustainable,” he said.He noted that decent commercial returns are a precondition, not an afterthought, for mobilising private capital at scale: “For private capital to be mobilised, they need to achieve decent returns, acceptable returns, and good returns. This is what we excel at, identifying those opportunities that are commercially profitable, but at the same time, with focus on achieving development impact.”He said the IFC model is self-reinforcing: the more profitable opportunities are identified and demonstrated, the easier it becomes to attract additional private capital into the sector.“With mobilising private capital, as long as it’s profitable, it will be sustainable. More private capital will come in. The more opportunities you identify, the easier you will be able to mobilise more private capital,” Jefri explained.He said the approach, distinguishes IFC from development institutions that rely on grants, which he described as less durable over time. “We don’t mobilise grants or public money, because that may not be as sustainable,” Jefri noted.“IFC’s Doha office, which operates with a resident team, continues to grow its presence in Qatar with a focus on channelling Qatari investment across sectors, particularly food security systems,” he added.

Qatar Airways continues to increase its capacity between Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by gradually expanding frequencies between Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Dubai International Airport (DXB) from two to five daily services, starting 5 June 2026.The additional frequencies will be introduced in phases to meet growing demand and provide greater flexibility for passengers travelling between the two cities. The existing two daily flights will be increased to three daily flights effective today, followed by the introduction of the fourth flight from 15 June, and a fifth daily flight resumed during the summer season. The flights will be operated on Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 aircraft. This expansion reinforces Qatar Airways' commitment to enhancing connectivity within the region and supporting both business and leisure travel between Qatar and the United Arab Emirates with up to 35 weekly flights. Qatar Airways has been steadily restoring its network across the Middle East and is currently operating to over 20 destinations in the region. Providing passengers convenient and seamless connectivity, the airline resumed operations to Dubai (DXB) and Sharjah (SHJ) in April, and restarted flights to Abu Dhabi (AUH) in May. Building on this momentum, Qatar Airways is continuing the phased restoration and expansion of its global network to over 160 destinations by this summer.

 Old Doha Port is set to celebrate one of Qatar’s most cherished traditions today (May 25) at 5:30pm, ahead of Eid al-Adha. Families and children will gather at the Mina District, in front of the Chabrat Al Mina Fish Market, to mark the annual Heyya Beyya tradition. Rooted in Qatari heritage and passed down through generations, Heyya Beyya is a cherished community tradition associated with Eid al-Adha. In the weeks leading up to the celebration, children plant and nurture greenery in small palm-leaf baskets known locally as “Al Hayya,” caring for them until the event. On the day itself, children gather to sing “Heyya Beyya,” a traditional folk song built around a call-and-response between children and the plant, before the baskets are cast into the sea in celebration. The Mina District’s waterfront will transform as participants arrive in traditional attire, joining in folk songs and celebrations that reflect the richness of Qatar’s cultural heritage. The event is organised in collaboration with the Qatar Scouts and Guides Association and reflects Old Doha Port’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Qatar’s cultural traditions, keeping heritage alive within the community for future generations.
