Gulf security is a red line, and its stability a collective responsibility

The Arabian Gulf today pursues a balanced diplomatic policy grounded in calls for negotiation and support for political processes aimed at ending the conflict, thereby reinforcing the principle of good neighbourliness and enhancing regional stability, including backing the ongoing mediation between the United States and Iran by Pakistan.At the same time, the Arabian Gulf categorically rejects all forms of wanton aggression, and makes clear that any attempt to seize control of the Strait of Hormuz or use it as a pressure card is entirely unacceptable. The Gulf states cannot and will not be held hostage under any circumstances.Imposing restrictions or levies on freedom of navigation through the strait constitutes a flagrant violation of international law: the Strait of Hormuz is a natural waterway governed by the law of the sea, which guarantees freedom of passage, and it cannot be treated as a channel subject to sovereign control or political extortion.Any attempt to impose a new reality or alter its legal status will be met with firm rejection. It is a vital artery for global energy security and international economic stability.It bears recalling that the other shore of the strait is not the preserve of a single party. The Sultanate of Oman overlooks it through the Musandam Governorate, and UAE islands are also present there. This is a reality that reflects the complex geographical and legal character of the strait, and confirms the impossibility of monopolising or controlling this critical waterway.Iran today, finds itself in a state of growing international isolation as a result of its escalation and its attacks on the Gulf states, which have cost it much of the regional sympathy it once enjoyed. We affirm that no attack can be legally justified under the pretext of "self-defence". Targeting the Gulf states constitutes aggression, plain and simple.In this context, it is worth noting that the continuation of tension serves multiple parties whether directly or indirectly at the expense of regional stability. Iran's policies in the region, including support for armed groups, the undermining of good-neighbourliness, and the stoking of conflicts, run counter to the principle of collective security. Security must be either universal or it will not exist at all.The Gulf states are not a party to the American–Israeli–Iranian war, and they will not fall into that trap. It is therefore essential to pursue strategic courses of action, foremost among them the establishment of a joint defence architecture along the lines of a "Gulf Nato," with the possibility of regional powers such as Turkiye or Pakistan joining to strengthen collective deterrence.Equally urgent is the acceleration of a regional network for the transmission of gas, oil, electricity, and water, linking the Gulf states and extending through Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea, through Oman to the Arabian Sea, and potentially to the Mediterranean via Syria — diversifying energy routes and strengthening energy security.In the same vein, there is a pressing need to develop a transcontinental rail network connecting East Asia, including China, to Europe via the Arab region, facilitating trade flows, deepening economic integration, and reviving the region's historic role as a global trade hub along the lines of the ancient Silk Roads.Such projects would reinforce stability and development, rather than leaving the door open to expansionist agendas or unilateral visions. Sustainable stability is also bound up with achieving a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian question on the basis of a two-state solution and United Nations resolutions.In this framework, it is important to adopt a unified Gulf foreign policy on regional and international issues, and to accelerate the implementation of regional transport projects such as the Gulf Railway and the Asia–Europe economic corridors. This would deepen economic integration among the Gulf states and strengthening their international standing.On the peace front, the Arab Peace Initiative must be upheld as a comprehensive framework for a full and just settlement. Genuine integration cannot be built without a unified policy, a shared defence architecture, and a clear collective deterrent.The message, in closing, remains constant: Arabian Gulf security is a red line, and its stability is a collective responsibility that admits no compromise. The Gulf states will remain steadfast in their right to protect their sovereignty and safeguard their interests by every legitimate means available.

Germany’s fiscal expansion marks a turning point for economic growth: QNB

For decades, Germany stood as Europe’s economic growth engine, as well as a pillar of financial stability. However, over the last decade, structural headwinds began to materialise that found its origin two decades ago through strategic decisions by the government, QNB stated in its latest economic commentary.According to QNB, the impact and challenges today include negative demographic trends, excessive regulatory and tax burdens, energy supply bottlenecks, and the insufficient adaptation of leading sectors to a rapidly changing global landscape. As a result, Germany’s economy has underperformed, with real GDP remaining almost unchanged in the last six years.This compares poorly with the 14.9% expansion for the US, or even the 6.8% growth for the rest of the Euro area during the same six-year period. The administration led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz could mark a turning point in economic policy and performance, QNB noted.For decades, Germany had prioritised fiscal discipline and debt sustainability. In contrast, the new government has advanced a massive multi-year fiscal expansion programme that could reach €1tn, including infrastructure and defence.QNB stated that the policy shift could mark a turning point for the German economy and has already led to an improvement in growth expectations and investor sentiment. The DAX, Germany’s benchmark stock market index, rose 23% last year. The Bloomberg Consensus Survey aggregates projections from economists and research houses, providing a benchmark for evolving growth expectations.After a contraction of the German economy by 0.5% in 2024, and a marginal growth of 0.2% in 2025, the survey points to improving trends, with growth rates of 1% and 1.5%, respectively, for 2026 and 2027.“In our view, Germany is entering a new expansion phase supported by cyclical tailwinds and a pivot in fiscal and monetary policy. In this article, we discuss the main factors behind the improvement of Germany’s macroeconomic outlook,” QNB stated.According to QNB, fiscal policy, with a focus on public investment and defence spending, will provide a significant boost to economic growth. Federal expenditures rose by 6% in 2025, a sizeable expansion in historical terms that is expected to accelerate. This year, Investment Expenditures and Defence Spending are planned to rise to €232bn, implying an increase of 40%.“Public investment in infrastructure and defence spending carry large fiscal multipliers, meaning that each euro spent by the government has a sizeable impact, of more than one euro, on the economy. Under conservative assumptions, even if execution faces bottlenecks and delays, additional spending could imply an annual fiscal impulse of over 0.75% of GDP per year. Thus, fiscal policy will act as a significant cyclical tailwind for the German economy over the medium term,” stated QNB.QNB noted that manufacturing is gradually stabilising, pointing to the early stages of a cyclical recovery. After reaching its peak in 2017, the sector faced a successive series of negative shocks, including global trade tensions, the Covid-19 pandemic, the energy crisis due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the decline of the conventional automotive industry.“In this context, industrial production accumulated a contraction of 19% in Germany from its peak until mid-2025. Since then, natural gas prices have declined by roughly 90% from their 2022 crisis peaks, while German wholesale electricity prices have also normalised, easing the critical cost shock faced by energy-intensive industries such as chemicals and metals.“Additionally, the sharp inventory correction of 2022–2023 has largely run its course. At the end of 2025, new manufacturing orders were growing at over 10% in year-over-year terms, partly reflecting the early effects of fiscal stimulus,” QNB stated.QNB stated that the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for manufacturing continues to recover from lows near 40 during 2024 to around the 50–51 range in recent months, reaching values that signal an incipient expansion in activity. Overall, the data suggests that German industry is stabilising, supported by lower energy costs and policy measures.QNB stated that monetary policy and credit conditions are becoming increasingly supportive. After bringing inflation under control, the European Central Bank (ECB) began a policy rate cutting cycle that reduced its benchmark deposit rate from a restrictive 4% in mid-2024 to around 2%, a level broadly consistent with estimates of neutrality.The 200-basis-point easing is gradually translating into lower borrowing costs, providing support to investment and consumption. As financial conditions improve, total credit to households and firms is growing in real terms, after several years of contraction. Thus, lower borrowing costs and growing credit volumes are expected to reinforce the broader growth recovery in the medium term.“All in all, Germany’s macroeconomic outlook is improving, supported by fiscal expansion, an emerging recovery in manufacturing and more accommodative monetary conditions. While structural obstacles remain, the policy shift should mark the beginning of a better growth trajectory,” QNB stated.

Advisor to Prime Minister says Qatar supports all diplomatic efforts for regional de-escalation

Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari affirmed the State of Qatar's support for all diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and ensuring the stability of the region.During the ministry's weekly media briefing on Tuesday, Dr. Al Ansari stressed that the end of all crises is achieved at the dialogue table, even when conflicts involve military escalation.He said that getting to the negotiating table quickly and stopping attacks would benefit the peoples of the region and international peace and security, and would enhance global economic stability.Dr. Al Asari emphasized that any attack on the State of Qatar is an attack on its sovereignty, noting that the current circumstances require first repelling the daily attacks on Qatar before talking about mediation or peaceful solutions.He also reiterated the State of Qatar's stance calling for a cessation to the escalation in the region, recalling Doha's warning years ago that uncontrolled escalation could lead to disastrous consequences, and that what the region is currently witnessing represents a dangerous level of escalation that can be contained if the parties return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.Dr. Al Ansari revealed that the only official contact between the State of Qatar and Iran since the beginning of the war came through a telephone call between HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, noting that Doha's focus is currently on defending the state and the diplomatic efforts related to that.He pointed out that the Iranian statements, which included an apology and a commitment not to attack Arab countries, have not been interpreted into reality on the ground, as the region witnessed attacks on the UAE and Bahrain, followed by an attack on Qatar itself, stressing that Qatar will continue to defend its territory and national interests.The Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the State of Qatar continues its joint diplomatic efforts with the GCC countries through continuous meetings and communications to ensure full coordination at the defence and political levels. He noted that any Gulf statement that was considered a comment on statements or apologies from the Iranian side that were not interpreted into reality on the ground has become unnecessary as long as the attacks have not stopped.He pointed out that Iranian attacks on the State of Qatar continue daily, but Qatar's Armed Forces continue to repel and deter this aggression with high efficiency, and without the attacks causing significant damage on the ground. He stressed that security in the country remains stable thanks to the efforts of all national forces, and thanks to all the necessary precautions taken by the State of Qatar from a military standpoint to protect its territory and infrastructure. This has enabled the interception and thwarting of most of the attacks that targeted the country, as no attacks have been recorded on the vital civilian infrastructure on which the lives of the population depend.Regarding the repercussions of the Iranian attacks on the local economy, Dr. Al Ansari said that the attacks affected the Qatari and global economy, noting that Qatar was forced to halt production in some facilities as a precautionary measure, in the first action of its kind in the country's history, indicating that the resumption of production is linked to the technical conditions of the competent authorities.He considered the attacks on these facilities in the region a dangerous precedent that could cause significant economic damage to the countries of the region and also affect the global economy. He stressed that the repercussions of targeting energy facilities or disrupting maritime navigation in the region will not be limited to its geographical scope, but will be felt by global markets.He said that targeting water facilities, desalination plants, water reservoirs, food and medicine stockpiles, or pharmaceutical production facilities poses a grave danger to the people of the region and beyond. He emphasized the need to stop such attacks immediately, regardless of who is behind them, and pointing to the direct impact of attacks on vital facilities in some Gulf countries on the lives of residents.  Dr. Al Ansari stressed during the weekly briefing that targeting shipping lanes and maritime straits, including shipments of oil, food and medicine, is unacceptable and poses a high risk to all countries in the region.He affirmed Qatar's support for all diplomatic efforts aimed at avoiding escalation and protecting the safety of navigation in the Arabian Gulf.Dr. Al Ansari stated that the State of Qatar has taken all necessary measures to ensure the resilience of the national economy, while maintaining full commitment to international clients until conditions return to normal and the global economy resumes recovery.He warned of the danger of targeting vital infrastructure in the region, as it constitutes a direct threat to civilian lives and could lead to a widespread humanitarian catastrophe, with economic repercussions extending to various parts of the world.Regarding strategic partnerships with the United States of America and other allies in the field of defence and security, Al Ansari confirmed that these partnerships are not in question, as they represent a fundamental pillar in strengthening regional security and deterring any threats.He pointed to the existence of almost daily communications with US officials at various levels, and noted that Qatar deals with the on-ground reality according to the existing diplomatic coordination, and that decisions regarding the continuation or adjustment of defence strategies and monitoring of facilities are made based on the current data.Al Ansari stressed that the sovereignty of the State of Qatar is non-negotiable, affirming that the sovereign decision regarding its diplomatic relations or hosting any missions or international partners is a purely Qatari decision.Regarding Russia's communication with the State of Qatar to play a mediation role, Al Ansari explained that contacts with the Russian Federation continue at multiple levels, but there is no specific information in this regard, adding that any role that contributes to stopping escalation and ending attacks on Qatari territory is welcomed.With regard to diplomatic coordination, the Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Qatar maintains almost daily contacts with its regional and international partners to ensure security and stability in the region, affirming that international support and solidarity include defensive contributions and ongoing diplomatic cooperation.He called on the international community to use all its capabilities to ensure the immediate cessation of these attacks, stressing that any attack on civilian infrastructure and the people's right to security and stability will not be accepted and will be responded to accordingly.Regarding diplomatic movement, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari pointed to the continuation of Qatari diplomatic efforts to follow developments in the region. Qatar has received more than 57 international calls during recent days from leaders and ministers from various countries around the world to express solidarity and follow the situation, focusing on addressing threats resulting from the ongoing Iranian attacks on Qatar and the escalation of tension in the region.He also noted that HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, chaired the delegation of the State of Qatar at the joint summit of the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and a number of sisterly and friendly countries and the European Union via video conference.Participants discussed developments in the military escalation and its serious repercussions on regional and international security and stability, as well as ways for the parties to return to the negotiating table through peaceful means.Qatar's condemnation in the strongest terms of the Iranian attacks on its territory was expressed, while praising the efforts of its armed forces in defending the country, and affirming its full readiness to protect its sovereignty, its people and its vital infrastructure.It also renewed its rejection of attacks on the territories of sisterly and friendly countries and affirmed its full support for these countries in all measures aimed at preserving their sovereignty, security and stability.He praised the statement issued by the European Union, which reflects the strength of relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and calls for stopping escalation and preserving regional security and stability.Al Ansari also noted that HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi chaired the delegation of the State of Qatar last Sunday, at the extraordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level via video conference.He pointed to the State of Qatar's continued efforts through official statements and diplomatic messages to the United Nations and the international community to condemn the Iranian violations and reject any justifications for them, including the attacks on Bahrain and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, affirming its commitment to protecting its national sovereignty.

Qatari women play key roles in maintaining society cohesion and stability

The vital roles played by Qatari women in strengthening family cohesion and maintaining social stability, particularly during the current circumstances facing the country, have been stressed by several experts and consultants in family affairs, psychology, human development, and life-skills training.Women remain the primary custodians of social values within the household, contributing to a sense of security, emotional balance, and resilience among family members, experts noted. They stressed that Qatari women play a central role in supporting their families' psychological well-being by providing reassurance, managing stress, and creating a calm, stable home environment.Family consultant Yousef al-Suwaidi explained that family stability begins with managing anxiety and pressures within the household. He noted Qatari women contribute significantly to this balance by embracing their roles in nurturing their children, supporting their husbands, and organising family affairs with a spirit of co-operation and shared responsibility.He added that women often foster a culture of participation at home by distributing responsibilities among family members and motivating children to support one another, fostering mutual respect and trust. Al-Suwaidi also pointed out that women's influence extends beyond the family sphere. By encouraging children to participate in school activities, community initiatives, and volunteer work, they help instill values of responsibility and civic engagement among younger generations.Institutional development and strategic planning consultant Dr Haya al-Maadeed described Qatari women as a “shield of resilience,” capable of transforming anxiety into strength during challenging times. She noted that Qatari women draw inspiration from historical examples of courage and support shown by women in Qatar’s past, whose contributions during difficult periods helped strengthen community solidarity.Dr al-Maadeed said women today play a critical role in providing emotional and psychological support to their families, helping to counter rumours and misinformation while reinforcing reassurance and confidence.Professional development expert Dr Hessa al-Marwani pointed out that Qatari women have historically been the source of reassurance within families and guardians of social solidarity. Times of uncertainty often reveal the depth of women’s influence inside the household.Women serve as the calm, balanced voice, capable of restoring emotional stability among family members and creating a sense of safety for children. She added that women also help strengthen community awareness by encouraging balanced discourse and maintaining strong social ties among relatives and neighbours.Family and community adviser Dr Ayesh al-Qahtani stressed that Qatari women play an essential role in preparing children to deal with pressures and fears with patience and faith. Drawing parallels with examples from Islamic history, he explained that mothers have always played a decisive role in strengthening resilience during times of crisis.Dr al-Qahtani noted that through wisdom and patience, women help their children develop positive attitudes toward challenges while encouraging reliance on faith and confidence in the future. Psychologist Dr Moza al-Maliki stressed that Qatari women remain a cornerstone of family resilience. She explained that women provide vital psychological and social support while demonstrating remarkable flexibility in managing challenges. Their participation in volunteer and charitable initiatives also enhances the community’s collective ability to face exceptional circumstances.Dr al-Maliki added that Qatari women have been actively contributing to the national development through their presence in fields such as education, healthcare, engineering, and social work. Their ability to balance professional responsibilities with family duties reflects the growing empowerment of women in Qatari society and highlights their critical role in building a cohesive and resilient community.Life-skills trainer Latifa al-Kuwari noted that women often serve as a source of calm and wisdom within the family. By promoting patience, co-operation, and mutual support among family members, they help transform the home into a space of reassurance and emotional stability. Human resources development trainer Dr Somaya al-Mutawa added that encouraging open dialogue within the household, organising family activities, and participating in community initiatives are among the practical steps women take to strengthen family cohesion and reduce stress.Similarly, visual artist Hanadi al-Darwish highlighted the importance of mothers in raising children with ethical and national values. At the same time, human development consultant Dr Lulwa al-Obaidli stressed that Qatari women play a vital role in preserving family ties, caring for elders, and reinforcing values of solidarity and compassion within the society.

Qatar engaged with Iran to de-escalate tensions

His Excellency Dr Majed Mohamed al-Ansari, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Tuesday disclosed that diplomatic talks and high-level visits between Qatar and Iran leaderships were ongoing to de-escalate the situation and maintain regional stability.Speaking at Tuesday's MoFA weekly briefing, Dr al-Ansari stressed that all regional and international stakeholders are engaged in continuous discussions aimed at returning to diplomatic solutions and the negotiating table. The goal is to prevent any escalation and preserve stability and peace across the region.Qatar, he said, has consistently implemented all necessary precautionary measures to safeguard its security, sovereignty and citizens amid potential regional escalations. Prolonged disputes and rising tensions serve no-one's interests, particularly given Iran's status as a neighbour with shared historical ties. A tense regional future would harm everyone involved.Dr al-Ansari noted that all parties — including Iran, the US and Turkiye — are collaborating closely with Qatar, which has always prioritised diplomatic and peaceful dispute resolution for the benefit of all.On the Gaza Strip, he emphasised the urgent need to fully reopen the Rafah Crossing to enable free movement for Palestinians seeking treatment, education and other humanitarian needs. The crossing must also stay open for aid deliveries, as humanitarian issues should remain separate from political disputes.While welcoming the partial reopening as a positive development, Dr al-Ansari said it falls far short of requirements. Over 20,000 patients urgently require medical care but cannot access it due to the ongoing standoff.Qatar, he added, is working tirelessly with partners — including Egypt, the US, the European Union and various international entities — to alleviate suffering and halt what he termed a "full crime against humanity."Addressing repeated accusations against Qatar from Israeli Knesset members, Dr al-Ansari declared: "We completely reject all attempts to use Qatar's name in the internal political conflicts of the Israeli government."He pointed out that Qatar's name is routinely dragged into Israel's domestic disputes, despite Qatar never attacking Israel. Israel, by contrast, launched an unprovoked assault on Qatar, killing civilians and damaging civilian infrastructure — for which its prime minister later formally apologised, pledging never to repeat such actions.Qatar, Dr al-Ansari reaffirmed, consistently promotes peace and stability while rejecting hostile posturing, having no involvement whatsoever in Israel's internal political matters.

HH Amir, Iranian president urge diplomacy to solve issues

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani discussed with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them in various fields. This followed a phone call His Highness the Amir held Thursday with the president. They also discussed the latest regional and international developments, particularly the current situation and the efforts being made to de-escalate tensions and establish stability. Both sides emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional issues, in a way that contributes to consolidating peace and security and achieving the region's interests.

Qatar leads joint Gulf security drill

Under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Minister of Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), Qatar is launching one of the region’s most significant joint security events — the Arabian Gulf Security 4. This large-scale tactical exercise brings together security agencies from across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and strategic partners from the United States, underscoring a shared commitment to collective defense, preparedness, and regional stability. Hosted by Qatar for the first time, the 11-day exercise officially begins this morning and marks a new chapter in regional security co-operation. Participating forces include security apparatuses from the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait, alongside specialised US units. The event highlights the integration of Gulf expertise, the strengthening of operational partnerships, and the advancement of joint readiness across multiple security domains. Designed to address the evolving landscape of security challenges, Arabian Gulf Security 4 aims to enhance coordination mechanisms, unify response strategies, and reinforce the GCC’s capacity for effective crisis management. Over 70 complex scenarios will unfold across 260 hours of intensive field exercises, testing operational measures, decision-making frameworks, and communication across command levels. The exercise covers a wide spectrum of simulations—including counter-terrorism, civil unrest, cyber threats, border security, and natural disaster response — allowing participating forces to test and refine both tactical capabilities and command-and-control structures. Aligned with international standards and best practices, the drill places strong emphasis on interoperability, information sharing, and rapid deployment readiness. Extensive preparations throughout 2025 saw a series of coordination meetings held in Doha, during which Qatar played a leading role in operational planning and logistical alignment. This leadership further underscores Qatar’s growing stature as a regional hub for security innovation and coordination. “Qatar has once again proven its ability to serve as a hub for high-level coordination and security innovation in the Gulf,” a regional analyst, reflecting widespread recognition of the country’s organisational capacity and strategic vision, said. Arabian Gulf Security 4 will conclude on February 4, with participating states conducting joint evaluations and sharing outcomes to refine collective security frameworks and sustain long-term cooperation among GCC partners.
