The State of Qatar has affirmed continued commitment to its efforts in mediation, dialogue, and preventive diplomacy to bolster peaceful efforts aimed at de-escalation and the preservation of international peace and security.  This came in Qatar's statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani before the UN General Assembly meeting on 'Strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution', under agenda item 31(b), at the UN Headquarters in New York.  Reiterating Qatar's position that mediation remains one of the most effective tools for settling disputes peacefully, preventing their outbreak, and building sustainable peace, Her Excellency said that mediation constitutes a fundamental pillar of preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution, and that the need to strengthen it is increasing, especially given the growing complexity of conflicts in light of modern technology, at a time when the world is witnessing the highest number of armed conflicts since the founding of the United Nations.  Her Excellency affirmed that the State of Qatar is proud of its longstanding role in mediation, noting that preventive diplomacy, mediation, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts are fundamental pillars of its foreign policy, based on the principles enshrined in its constitution and in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions.  HE the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN highlighted the joint mediation efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar, alongside the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States of America, and the Republic of Turkiye, in reaching the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, which was signed in October of last year, stressing Qatar's emphasis on the necessity for all parties to fulfill their commitments, fully implement the ceasefire agreement, and open the crossings to ensure the sustained and uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.  Her Excellency said that Qatar continues its efforts in eastern Congo through the Doha Framework for a Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed on November 15, 2025, while noting Qatar's mediation efforts in Afghanistan, which culminated in the signing of the peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban in Doha in February 2020.  Her Excellency renewed Qatar's appreciation and support for Pakistan's mediation efforts between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, affirming its full support for mediation efforts aimed at de-escalation, thereby contributing to enhanced security and stability in the region.

 HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani held a phone call yesterday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.They discussed the latest developments in the region as well as efforts aimed at de-escalation, safeguarding regional security, and promoting peace and stability.HH the Amir reaffirmed Qatar's firm position in favour of political and diplomatic solutions and stressed the need for all parties to exercise the utmost responsibility and restraint to spare the region the consequences of further escalation. His Highness also expressed appreciation to the president for the Iranian government's engagement in dialogue and constructive efforts.His Highness also emphasised the importance of peaceful solutions to contain tensions and safeguard regional security and stability, thanking Pezeshkian for his efforts in that regard and calling for continued positive engagement in the negotiations being facilitated by Pakistan as well as for broader dialogue, particularly with countries in the region.The Iranian president praised HH the Amir's efforts to promote security and stability in the region, expressing his appreciation for His Highness's positions supporting de-escalation, and affirming his welcome and interest in His Highness's proposals on advancing an agreement that would promote regional and international stability.

HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani received a phone call from Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates of the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt Dr. Badr Abdelatty. During the call, they discussed cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen them, as well as Pakistani mediation efforts between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The phone call also addressed coordinating efforts to support mediation aimed at de-escalation, thereby contributing to strengthening security and stability in the region. HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the need for all parties to respond positively to the ongoing mediation efforts, which would pave the way for addressing the root causes of the crisis through peaceful means and dialogue, leading to a sustainable agreement that prevents renewed escalation. 

China's leader Xi Jinping met with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing on Monday, state media reported, as diplomatic efforts by several countries to formally end the Iran war drag on.The high-level meeting, reported by state news agency Xinhua, followed Sharif's talks earlier in the day with Premier Li Qiang, China's number two leader. Pakistan has emerged as a central mediator between the United States and Iran, hosting face-to-face talks last month that failed to yield a lasting agreement.Sharif was accompanied on his trip by army chief Asim Munir, Islamabad's key negotiator between the United States and Iran, Pakistan television showed on Monday.Xi praised Pakistan for "taking the initiative to play a mediating role in restoring peace in the Middle East", according to a Chinese readout of the talks between the two leaders. "Both sides should continue to maintain close communication and coordination (and) jointly oppose unilateralism and Cold War mentality," Xi said.China has played a quieter mediation role, shepherding phone calls and meetings with officials of affected Gulf countries. Sharif, speaking to Chinese leaders alongside Munir, said "the world is passing through a critical moment", Pakistan's state-run PTV channel showed."Pakistan has played a sincere role to mediate between US and Iran. Field marshal (Munir) was in Tehran and did not want to miss this great visit," Sharif said. "Things are moving in the right direction. I would like to thank China's support to promote peace," he said.Sharif kicked off his four-day official visit in Hangzhou in eastern Zhejiang province on Saturday. It follows a visit by Munir to Tehran on Friday and Saturday alongside Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi as part of mediation efforts to end the war. China has said it would work with Pakistan to "make positive contributions to the early restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East".In April, Pakistan hosted the only direct negotiations between US and Iranian officials to take place since the war began.Munir was at the centre of the action during that round of talks, greeting both delegations on their arrival and displaying bonhomie with US Vice President JD Vance.But the talks ultimately failed, with Iran accusing the United States of making "excessive demands"

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that a deal with Iran would either be "great and meaningful" or there would be "no deal.""The deal with Iran will either be a great and meaningful one, or there will be no deal," he wrote on Truth Social.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an announcement was possible later Sunday on a deal with Iran that could formally end the Middle East war, insisting goals had been met."I do think perhaps there is the possibility that in the next few hours the world will get some good news," Rubio told reporters in New Delhi.Rubio, who is on his first visit to India, said the emerging deal would address US President Donald Trump's concerns on the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has largely blocked in response to the US-Israeli attack.The agreement would also start a "process that can ultimately leave us where the president wants us to be, and that is a world that no longer has to fear or worry about an Iranian nuclear weapon", he added.His remarks came after Trump said a proposal that included opening the Strait of Hormuz had been "largely negotiated"."An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday. Asked about the criticism, Rubio said "no one has been stronger" among US presidents against Iran by launching the war, codenamed Epic Fury."When this conflict began with Iran, the goals were outlined, they were very simple, they were very clear -- we were going to destroy their navy, which was done," he said. Rubio said the United States also aimed to "significantly reduce" Iran's ability to fire ballistic missiles and to "do damage to the defence-industrial base" of the country."Those were the objectives of Epic Fury. Those objectives were achieved," Rubio said.

His Excellency the PM and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani held a series of telephone calls with regional and international counterparts to discuss bilateral relations and Pakistan-led mediation efforts between the US and Iran, alongside co-ordination on broader initiatives to support regional de-escalation.The PM stressed the need for all parties to engage constructively with the ongoing mediation efforts, which would pave the way for addressing the root causes of the crisis through peaceful means and dialogue, leading to a sustainable agreement that prevents renewed escalation.In his call with Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah al-Saud, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed coordinating efforts to support the mediation aimed at de-escalation.The PM also spoke with Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and National Security Adviser of the UAE Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan, with whom he discussed bilateral co-operation and stressed the importance of supporting ongoing mediation efforts to reach a lasting peace agreement.In a separate call with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the two sides discussed co-operative relations between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen them.The PM held a call with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, during which the two sides discussed bilateral co-operation relations and ways to further strengthen them.In his conversation with Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi, discussions focused on ongoing efforts to achieve peace and reinforce regional security and stability. The PM reaffirmed Qatar's unwavering support for efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive agreement to end the crisis.He further emphasised that freedom of navigation remains a fundamental principle that cannot be compromised, warning that any closure of the Strait of Hormuz or attempts to use it as a means of pressure would further deepen the crisis and threaten the vital interests of countries across the region. He also underscored the importance of adhering to international law and the principles of good neighbourliness.The PM discussed bilateral relations and regional diplomatic efforts with Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan, with the talks focusing on strengthening co-operation between Doha and Ankara.He also spoke with Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom Yvette Cooper, discussing bilateral co-operation and ways to further strengthen it.The PM concluded the round of calls with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs of Jordan Ayman Safadi, exploring ways of strengthening co-operation between the two countries. 

Trump says Hormuz reopening ‘largely negotiated’US president in ‘very good call’ with Gulf leaders US Donald Trump claimed an agreement to permanently end the war in Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz had “largely been negotiated” and “would be announced shortly”. In a post to his Truth Social account yesterday afternoon, Trump said he had concluded a “very good call” with leaders of Gulf countries and other US allies in the Middle East. “Final aspects and details of the deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly,” Trump wrote. “In addition to many other elements of the agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened.” The president said he just fi nished “a very good call” with leaders in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkiye, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain. **media[449413]** The possible deal is “subject to fi nalisation between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed”, Trump added. Trump’s comments came after mediators in high-stakes talks in Tehran. Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, says he discussed the “achievements” of US-negotiations with offi cials upon his return to Tehran. “With conservative optimism, we can hope that – if the other side is adequately committed – a positive stride is taking shape which is the result of the positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran based on dignity, the steadfastness of the courageous armed forces, and the resistance of the brave Iranian nation, as well as the initiative and dedicated endeavours of the Pakistani mediator,” said Moghadam. The Iranian ambassador also thanked Pakistan for its role in the negotiations. Earlier, Iran and Pakistan submitted a revised proposal to the US to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, two Pakistani sources familiar with the negotiations told Reuters yesterday. A US response to the proposal is expected by today, the sources said. An interim deal to end the Iran war is in its fi nal phase and is “fairly comprehensive”, one Pakistani offi cial involved in the negotiations said. “It is never over till it is done,” the offi cial said. But Iran, the US and mediator Pakistan all said yesterday that progress had been made in talks on ending almost three months of war. Iran said it was focused on fi - nalising a memorandum of understanding, or MoU, after its top offi cials met Field Marshal Asim Munir, the army chief of Pakistan. The Pakistani army said the negotiations had resulted in “encouraging” progress towards a fi - nal understanding. Two Pakistani sources involved in negotiations said the deal being negotiated is “fairly comprehensive to terminate the war.”

Pakistan military chief arrives in Tehran in push to end Iran war Qatari negotiating team in Tehran to help secure US-Iran deal Pakistan stepped up its diplomatic push to end the Iran-US conflict as army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, visited Tehran yesterday and Qatar dispatched a negotiating team to the Iranian capital, amid signs that talks have narrowed gaps but are still to secure a breakthrough.Munir’s arrival in Tehran comes as Islamabad continues its mediation efforts while Iran examines a new US proposal aimed at ending the war in the Middle East. Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, however, cautioned that the visit did not necessarily mean “we have reached a turning point or a decisive situation”. He added that disagreements between Iran and the United States remained “deep and extensive”, according to comments carried by Iran's ISNA news agency.Pakistan’s military said in a statement that Munir had “arrived in Tehran as part of ongoing mediation efforts”. It added that he was welcomed by Iran's Interior Minister, Eskandar Momeni, and Pakistan's Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi.Naqvi had visited Iran earlier this week for the second time in days, meeting President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday.Baqaei also confirmed that a delegation from Qatar held talks with Araghchi on Friday. “In recent days, many countries -- both regional and non-regional -- have been trying to help bring the war to an end... However, Pakistan remains the official mediator."Pakistan, which shares a border with Iran, hosted the only direct negotiations between US and Iranian officials since the conflict began during talks held in April. Munir played a central role in those discussions, greeting both delegations and engaging in cordial exchanges with US Vice-President J D Vance.The negotiations eventually collapsed, with Iran accusing Washington of making “excessive demands”. Since then, both sides have exchanged several proposals while fears of renewed fighting have persisted.Meanwhile, a Qatari negotiating team landed in Tehran on Friday, in coordination with the United States, to help secure a deal to end the conflict and resolve outstanding disputes, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.“A Qatari negotiation team is in Tehran on Friday,” the source said, adding that the delegation had travelled in co-ordination with the United States and was there to help “reach a final deal that would end the war and address outstanding issues with Iran”. Qatar’s foreign ministry did not immediately comment.While Pakistan has remained the official mediator since the conflict erupted, Qatar's renewed involvement reflects its longstanding role as a key US ally in the region and as a trusted back channel between Washington and Tehran.A senior Iranian source told Reuters on Thursday that no agreement had yet been reached, although differences had narrowed. Iran's uranium enrichment programme and its control over the Strait remain among the key unresolved issues.Asked about Qatar’s role during a gathering of Nato foreign ministers in Sweden, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Pakistan remained Washington’s main interlocutor in the negotiations and had done an “admirable job”. He added: “Obviously, other countries have interests, because especially Gulf countries that are, you know, in the middle of all this – they have their own situation going. And we talk to all of them. I would just say that the primary country we’ve been working with on all of this is Pakistan, and that remains the case."
