His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani held a conversation via telephone Saturday with US President Donald Trump. They discussed the latest developments in light of the continued and unjustified Iranian attacks on Qatar and countries in the region, in addition to efforts made to contain the current escalation. His Highness the Amir stressed during the call that the current escalation seen in the region will have dangerous repercussions on international security and peace, stressing the importance of containing the crisis and intensifying diplomacy to end it. His Highness also stressed that Qatar will not hesitate to defend its sovereignty, security, and national interests in line with the UN Charter and the provisions of international law. The two side agreed on the importance of working together to maintain regional and international stability and to support political avenues that could address current tensions and avoid further escalation in the region. 

As tensions rise in the Gulf following a series of attacks across the region, including on key energy facilities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, concerns are growing about regional stability and global energy security. Gulf Times spoke with energy expert Roudi Baroudi about the implications for the Gulf and global energy markets, and his perspective on the recent article by Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi. What is your view on the article by His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, regarding the recent threats to energy infrastructure in the Gulf? What I think can only come from what I know, and what I know is that when it comes to energy, HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs is one of the best-informed and most highly respected people on the planet. His concerns are perfectly valid, and the fact that he decided to sound the alarm so publicly says much about the urgency of the matter. What I think, therefore, is that people in high places should listen to him, then find a way to end the crisis in our region before its consequences go too far. Following the targeting of gas facilities in Qatar, Ras Tanura facilities in Saudi Arabia, and the refinery in Bahrain, how serious are the risks facing energy infrastructure across the Gulf? The unfortunate targeting of oil and gas facilities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bahrain means the risks to energy infrastructure in the Gulf are very high. If we speak only about the refining side, we are talking here about more than four to five million barrels per day of refined products. Part of this includes gasoline, diesel, Jet A fuel, and many other products necessary for industry and transportation. In total, we are looking at over $100bn at stake, and I don’t believe that war insurance is easy to obtain in such circumstances.If these attacks continue to target major oil and gas facilities in the region, what could be the impact on global energy supply and prices? Before these interruptions, with only one or two minor disruptions, GCC energy products have been the lifeblood of the global economy. They have helped spread economic opportunity across the world. Many people lifted out of poverty by globalisation were given that chance because of affordable and reliable energy, much of it supplied by GCC producers. Do these incidents signal a new phase of threats to Gulf energy security and international energy markets?These grave incidents have led to what could become a supply shock. Globally, we may not find enough spare capacity if disruptions intensify. One analyst in London earlier this week said that such a scenario could have a “nuclear effect” on energy supplies and energy prices worldwide.

In an extraordinary emergency meeting Thursday, the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU) convened virtually to address the escalating tension following recent Iranian attacks on several GCC countries, including Qatar.The high-level session brought together Their Excellencies, the foreign ministers of GCC and EU states, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in a unified bid to contain the crisis threatening regional and global stability.Representing Qatar, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al‑Thani strongly condemned the Iranian strikes that targeted Qatari territory, describing them as a blatant violation of national sovereignty and the principles of good neighbourliness.The PM emphasised that Qatar, which has consistently worked to mediate and avoid regional confrontations, viewed the renewed aggression as undermining the trust underpinning its bilateral relations with Tehran. He reaffirmed Qatar’s solidarity with fellow GCC countries and its support for all measures taken to defend their security and stability.The ministers jointly denounced the Iranian attacks as “unjustifiable” acts that endangered civilian lives and damaged critical infrastructure, including oil and service facilities. They noted that such actions pose serious risks to regional peace and the global economy. The EU reaffirmed its solidarity with the GCC nations, pledging continued coordination to deter further escalations and ensure the protection of civilians and international law.Calling for an immediate end to hostilities, the ministers urged Iran to cease all military operations and return to the path of diplomacy. They underscored their commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and stressed adherence to the UN Charter and principles of international humanitarian law.The meeting also praised Oman’s constructive role in facilitating communication and de-escalation efforts prior to the attacks.Reaffirming the GCC states’ inherent right to self‑defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the ministers declared that the Gulf nations reserve the right to take all necessary measures to defend their territories and people.At the same time, they reiterated their determination to pursue diplomatic channels to secure a sustainable resolution that prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons and halts the proliferation of ballistic missiles, drones, and other destabilising technologies.The discussions also highlighted the critical importance of safeguarding regional airspace and maritime routes — particularly through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab‑el‑Mandeb — to ensure freedom of navigation and stability of global energy supplies. The ministers commended the EU for its naval operations ASPIDES and ATALANTA, which enhance maritime security and protect vital trade routes.In closing, both sides reaffirmed the significance of the GCC‑EU strategic partnership, first established in 1988 and renewed at the Brussels Summit in 2024. They pledged intensified coordination to uphold peace, protect regional security, and ensure that the Gulf remains a cornerstone of global economic stability. 

Qatar has declared that Iranian attacks on its territory have crossed clear red lines and will not go unanswered, as its Foreign Ministry revealed the full scale of an assault that saw more than 140 missiles, drones, and fighter jets launched against the country since Saturday — the vast majority of which were intercepted and destroyed by Qatari armed forces.Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Majed bin Mohammed al-Ansari, speaking at the ministry's weekly media briefing Tuesday, delivered a comprehensive and at times pointed account of events, flatly rejecting Iranian claims that Doha had been forewarned of the attacks. "Completely untrue," he said, stressing that Qatar was taken entirely by surprise by what he described as wholly unjustified aggression.The scale of the attackSince the Iranian assault began on Saturday, Qatari territory has been targeted by three cruise missiles — all intercepted — 101 ballistic missiles, 98 of which were shot down, and 39 drones, 24 of which were brought down. Two Iranian SU-24 fighter jets that violated Qatari airspace were also destroyed in accordance with rules of engagement, after the necessary warnings were issued.A search is under way for the crews of both aircraft. In total, Qatar's air defences have neutralised the overwhelming majority of every category of weapon deployed against it.Al-Ansari was emphatic that the targeting was not confined to military installations or American interests, but extended deliberately to Qatari lands and vital civilian infrastructure, including sites in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan.Attempts to strike Hamad International Airport were also made, though every missile and drone aimed at the airport was intercepted before reaching its grounds. The airport, he confirmed, is completely safe and fully operational.He stressed that a tank struck in Mesaieed belongs to a factory and has no connection to the drinking water supply, adding that Qatar's strategic reserves of water and electricity remain secure and plentiful, with no threat on either front.‘Missile stockpile not depleted’Al-Ansari praised the performance of Qatar's armed forces in unequivocal terms, saying they dealt with every threat with high efficiency and without any real losses. He rejected outright the media reports — including a Bloomberg article — suggesting that Qatar's Patriot interceptor missile stockpile had been depleted, calling such claims entirely without foundation. "The missile stockpile has never been depleted," he said, confirming that Qatar maintains full readiness with reserves sufficient to address any further threat. The country is reviewing legal options to have such misinformation corrected.Recalling that Iran had also attacked Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base in 2025, al-Ansari said Qatar had at that time chosen to prioritise regional stability over retaliation, even though it had every right to respond. That restraint, he made clear, should not be mistaken for weakness. Qatar reserves the right to respond to the current attacks, all options remain on the table, and the Qatari leadership is actively weighing how to proceed whilst simultaneously calling for an immediate halt to the escalation.Diplomacy under fireOn the diplomatic front, Qatar has moved swiftly and on multiple tracks. The Iranian ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry last Saturday, where Qatar expressed its strong protest and outright rejection of the attacks, describing them as a brazen violation of sovereignty and a flagrant breach of international law and the UN Charter.Minister of State Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh al-Khulaifi warned the ambassador directly that a repetition of such conduct would carry dangerous consequences for the bilateral relationship.Al-Ansari also dismissed Iranian foreign minister claims of prior notification as a fabrication, clarifying that an earlier contact — made during last year's attack — amounted to nothing more than a vague reference to a reaction directed generally against Gulf states, with no specification of time, place, or targets.Global support for QatarQatar has since received more than 88 expressions of solidarity from world leaders. His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received 34 calls from heads of state, whilst His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani received 27 calls from heads of government and foreign ministers. Senior ministers received a further 18 calls from their counterparts.The prime minister also participated virtually in the 50th extraordinary meeting of the GCC Ministerial Council Sunday, at which Gulf foreign ministers condemned Iran's attacks in the strongest terms, affirmed their collective solidarity, and reserved the right to respond in line with the UN Charter.Qatar additionally joined Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, the UAE, and the United States in a joint statement condemning Iran's missile and drone campaign as a menacing escalation that violates the sovereignty of multiple states.On Monday, Qatar dispatched identical formal messages to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and US Permanent Representative to the UN Michael Waltz — current president of the Security Council — calling for urgent international attention to what Doha described as an unacceptable assault imperilling regional security and stability.Life goes onDespite the gravity of the situation, al-Ansari was keen to stress that daily life across Qatar continues normally, underpinned by transparent governance and emergency plans that have proved effective at both the military and civilian levels. More than 8,000 transit passengers stranded at Hamad International Airport have been accommodated in hotels at the state's expense, with visas, residencies, and official documents extended for an initial period of one month, or until the crisis concludes. Passengers stranded on cruise ships have similarly been provided for.Qatar's attention, al-Ansari concluded, is now squarely focused on defending its territory. A nation that consistently chooses peace, dialogue, and de-escalation as the cornerstones of its foreign policy, Qatar will nonetheless never hesitate to defend its sovereignty — and those who have tested that resolve, he made plain, will not find it lacking. 

At least five people were injured Wednesday in ‌two Russian attacks targeting railway infrastructure ​in southern ‌Ukraine, Ukrainian officials said.A railway ‌worker ⁠was hurt ‌in a drone ‌strike, which hit an empty passenger train ⁠in the morning in the Mykolaiv region, Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said on the Telegram messaging app.Another worker and two children were hurt later when a Russian missile hit an administrative ​building at a railway station in the neighbouring Odesa region, he said.An official later updated ‌the number of ⁠injured ​in the missile attack to four, without ​saying who the fourth person was.Kuleba said there was also an attempted Russian drone attack late on Tuesday on a train operating between the eastern-central city of Dnipro and Kovel in northwestern Ukraine. It was stopped by railway workers and the drone ‌hit a few ‌metres away from ⁠the locomotive, he said.Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukrainian national railways, ⁠said ⁠Russia had intensified drone attacks on railway infrastructure, and that rolling stock was among the main targets.It reported that 18 strikes had been recorded since the start of ​March, damaging 41 facilities.Locomotives, freight cars and specialised equipment used to repair infrastructure have also been targeted, as well as railway depots and bridges, the operator said.On Monday, a Russian drone attack on a commuter train in Dnipropetrovsk region killed ‌one person ​and wounded seven others. 

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani has rejected Iranian claims that recent missile attacks were not aimed at Qatar, saying the evidence on the ground showed otherwise.This came during a phone call HE Sheikh Mohammed received yesterday from Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi.Araghchi said the missile strikes were directed at American interests and were not intended to target the Gulf state. Yet, the prime minister a"categorically rejected" that assertion, citing the civilian and residential areas inside the country struck by the attacks. He said the areas affected included the vicinity of Hamad International Airport as well as vital infrastructure and industrial zones, including facilities linked to liquefied natural gas production.The PM described the strikes as a "flagrant violation" of Qatar's sovereignty and of international law. He added the attacks were not limited to missiles, but were ongoing through drones as well as aircraft that had entered Qatari airspace and were intercepted by the country's armed forces.He added that these Iranian actions reflected "an escalatory approach" and did not indicate any genuine desire for de-escalation or resolution, accusing Tehran of seeking to harm its neighbours and draw them into a war "that is not theirs".The premier called for an immediate halt to attacks on regional states that have sought to remain outside the conflict, urging all sides to prioritise the broader interests of their peoples.He stressed that Qatar has consistently favoured dialogue and diplomacy, but would respond to any violation of its sovereignty, security or territorial integrity.The PM emphasised that such attacks could not go unanswered, citing the country's inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
