QSE reaffirms steps to develop debt market

The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) Monday reaffirmed its commitment to further develop the debt markets, including deepening it and developing a benchmark yield curve, to make it attractive for the international capital to tap local currency instruments. “The QSE reaffirms its commitment to continuing its collaboration with regulators and issuers to further develop the debt market and enhance the attractiveness of the local market, supporting Qatar’s position as a leading regional hub for capital markets,” a bourse spokesman said after witnessing the listing of QNB Group’s bonds, representing the largest Qatari riyal–denominated bond issuance in the history of the local market. The listing of QNB’s bonds follows a series of notable developments in QSE’s debt market in recent years, including the listing of the first corporate bonds, the first Islamic sukuk, the first sustainable bonds, and the first green sukuk, culminating in the listing of the largest Qatari riyal–denominated bond issuance in the market’s history. “These developments highlight the QSE’s commitment to deepening the market and enhancing product diversification to meet the needs of both local and international investors,” the spokesman said. The listing represents a qualitative addition to Qatar’s capital market, contributing to the deepening of the domestic debt market and enhancing liquidity in local currency instruments.It also supports the development of a benchmark yield curve, improving pricing efficiency for future issuances. For investors, the listing offers a short-term investment instrument with clear returns within a regulated and transparent framework, supporting portfolio diversification and efficient liquidity management. At the broader ecosystem level, the transaction demonstrates the market’s ability to accommodate large-scale issuances and attract a diversified base of international investors, reinforcing QSE’s role as an integrated platform for capital formation in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the objectives of financial sector development. The development of an active debt market in Qatar will have far-reaching benefits in deepening the financial infrastructure in Qatar, according to the strategic plan for financial sector regulation. It will help to attract institutional investors and provide an important incentive for local investors to better manage their asset allocation process and therefore retain capital in the country, the plan said, adding a well-developed debt market will also allow companies to diversify their sources of funding and reduce the cost of borrowing. Over the past year, QSE matured from a purely equity-centric market into a more diversified, multi-asset platform with the successful listing of Qatar’s first corporate bond, a QR500mn issuance by Ahlibank, marking an important milestone in developing the domestic fixed-income market and providing investors with new tools for portfolio diversification. This was followed by the listing of the first Islamic sukuk in the exchange’s history, issued by QIIB, reinforcing its commitment to supporting Shariah-compliant finance and broadening access to long-term funding instruments aligned with investor demand. Qatar had achieved ‘lowest yield’ in CEEMEA (Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region in 2025 for bond and sukuk issuance in international markets, reflecting the deep trust global investors place in the country’s financial stability, strong financial position and its solid medium-term economic growth outlook.

Benin votes a month after foiled coup attempt

Benin voted Sunday in parliamentary and local elections, just one month after a failed coup plot shook the west African country and three months ahead of presidential polls.President Patrice Talon's ruling coalition is expected to strengthen its already powerful hand in the elections, with the main opposition Democrats party barred from the local polls.The elections come at a fraught moment for Benin, still reeling from a deadly coup attempt by army mutineers on December 7, which was put down by the military, with support from Nigeria and France.Talon, 67, who is nearing the end of his second five-year term, called on all voters to "do their duty" as he cast his ballot."Today is the beginning of a better life," he said.**media[403322]**The legislative elections will define the political landscape ahead of April's presidential polls, from which the opposition has also been struck from the ballot for failing to obtain the required number of signatures.Talon, who has served the constitutional two-term limit, is barred from running in April's elections.His hand-picked successor, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is a strong favourite to win.Talon has presided over strong economic development across his nearly one decade in power, but critics accuse him of restricting political opposition and basic rights.**media[403323]**The single-round legislative polls will elect the 109 seats in the National Assembly, where Talon's three-party bloc hopes to strengthen its majority.The Democrats, only running in the parliamentary races, risk ceding ground to the ruling coalition, which currently holds 81 seats.Some observers say the opposition may lose all its 28 seats, given the current electoral law's tough requirement for parties to gather signatures from 20 percent of registered voters in each of the country's 24 voting districts to stand for parliament.The streets of economic capital Cotonou were calm as polling stations opened, AFP reporters said."I'm proud of the process and the organisation, and I hope everything goes well until the end," said craftsman Claude Somakpo.The campaign unfolded without large rallies, with most parties opting for grassroots strategies like door-to-door canvassing."All measures have been taken to guarantee a free, transparent and secure vote. No political ambition can justify violence or endanger national unity," the head of the electoral commission (CENA), Sacca Lafia, said Saturday.

Rupee rout dims hopes of a strong recovery in Indian equities

The Indian rupee’s slide to repeated record lows is starting to pinch the equity market, with analysts warning that prolonged weakness could undermine confidence in the nascent recovery of the $5.2tn stock market.Asia’s worst-performing currency this year has become a near-term risk for Indian stocks, tempering optimism driven by strong economic growth and improving corporate earnings. In December, global funds pulled about $1.6bn from local equities, wiping out $1.3bn of inflows from the previous two months. Withdrawals from local debt have accelerated as well.With India heavily reliant on overseas capital to fund its current-account gap and corporate expansion, sustained outflows threaten to keep equities under pressure. Slowing earnings growth, elevated valuations and a lack of listed artificial intelligence-related names have already led to local shares trailing most emerging-market peers this year.There’s “growing pressure on the currency amid a combination of global uncertainty and India-specific capital flow challenges,” said Akshat Garg, head of research at Choice Wealth.**media[394252]**The steepest US tariffs in Asia have weighed on sentiment as traders await the two nations to finalise negotiations. The benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index slid 0.6% on Tuesday, and now trades about 1.4% off its November peak.The currency fell past the 91 per dollar mark on Tuesday, a new record low. The Reserve Bank of India may not strongly resist further weakness in the current environment, prioritising growth over currency defence, according to Barclays Plc.To be sure, a weaker rupee can benefit companies that earn a large share of revenue overseas, particularly technology exporters. A gauge of information-technology stocks has climbed about 14% since the end of September, coinciding with the period in which rupee losses deepened.For now, traders are bracing for more volatility as the rupee’s slide compounds concerns over trade, earnings and capital flows. Until the currency stabilises or global conditions turn more supportive, India’s long-awaited equity rebound may continue to struggle for traction.Equities face muted returns as weaker rupee, range-bound government bond yields, and modest earnings growth “favour selective sectoral exposure”, Dhananjay Sinha, head of research at Systematix Shares and Stocks Ltd wrote in a note.Amid rupee weakness and withdrawals by global funds, robust flows from local institutions have limited downside in the market. Net purchases by mutual funds and insurers crossed $80bn this year, compared with about $18bn of foreign fund outflows.“Support from retail flows has cushioned volatility but hasn’t resolved the underlying uncertainties,” Chanchal Agarwal, chief investment and strategy officer at Credence Family Office, said in an interview.
