 HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani held a phone call yesterday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.They discussed the latest developments in the region as well as efforts aimed at de-escalation, safeguarding regional security, and promoting peace and stability.HH the Amir reaffirmed Qatar's firm position in favour of political and diplomatic solutions and stressed the need for all parties to exercise the utmost responsibility and restraint to spare the region the consequences of further escalation. His Highness also expressed appreciation to the president for the Iranian government's engagement in dialogue and constructive efforts.His Highness also emphasised the importance of peaceful solutions to contain tensions and safeguard regional security and stability, thanking Pezeshkian for his efforts in that regard and calling for continued positive engagement in the negotiations being facilitated by Pakistan as well as for broader dialogue, particularly with countries in the region.The Iranian president praised HH the Amir's efforts to promote security and stability in the region, expressing his appreciation for His Highness's positions supporting de-escalation, and affirming his welcome and interest in His Highness's proposals on advancing an agreement that would promote regional and international stability.

HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani on Friday held a phone call with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to discuss bilateral relations and efforts aimed at easing regional tensions. The two sides also exchanged views on mediation efforts being facilitated by Pakistan between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The call focused on coordinating diplomatic efforts to support de-escalation initiatives, with both sides stressing the importance of addressing underlying causes of regional crises through peaceful dialogue. HE Sheikh Mohammed reiterated the need for all parties to engage constructively with ongoing mediation efforts in order to reach a sustainable agreement that would help prevent renewed escalation and contribute to broader regional stability.

HE Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi received a phone call on Monday from  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Mohammad Ishaq Dar.During the call, the two sides discussed the latest regional developments, particularly efforts related to maintaining the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as well as ongoing initiatives aimed at de-escalation in a manner that enhances regional security and stability.HE the Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the State of Qatar's full support for Pakistan's mediation efforts aimed at resolving the crisis through peaceful means. He also stressed the importance of all parties engaging constructively with these efforts to create favorable conditions for advancing negotiations toward a comprehensive agreement that would contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the latest regional developments during a phone call on Friday evening.The two sides reviewed efforts aimed at de-escalation and addressing the regional and international repercussions of current tensions, in a manner that supports lasting security and stability. 

Qatar Reads is expanding its cross-border literacy efforts through shared reading programmes, storytelling initiatives and literary exchanges under the Years of Culture platform, its manager Fatema al-Malki said. She told Gulf Times that such an initiative aims to connect young people across countries by fostering engagement through books, ideas and shared cultural experiences. Al-Malki outlined plans to deepen collaboration between schools, libraries and community spaces internationally, describing these as “natural opportunities” for cultural connection built around shared reading experiences. The initiative also aims to bring together diverse audiences, particularly youth, through programmes that encourage dialogue and exposure to different perspectives. “There is enormous potential in developing shared reading programmes and children’s storytelling initiatives that connect communities across countries,” she said, noting that such efforts align with Qatar Reads’ core mission of promoting cultural understanding. “Every story is an invitation to see the world through someone else’s eyes.” Operating under Qatar National Library, Qatar Reads has emerged as a key player in advancing literacy and cultural exchange within the Years of Culture programme. Through curated literary activities, it has introduced readers to voices and traditions from partner countries while also expanding the global reach of Qatari and Arab literature. Al-Malki said reading remains one of the most accessible ways to engage with another culture, allowing individuals to encounter different histories, values and lived experiences in a personal and immersive way. “Through stories, poetry and children’s literature, readers can connect with cultures beyond their own in a meaningful sense,” she said. Among its notable initiatives is an international reading exchange programme launched last year in Buenos Aires, in collaboration with the city’s Ministry of Culture. The project distributed more than 1,000 reading kits to libraries across Argentina, featuring Spanish translations of the classical Arabic fables Kalila wa Dimna. The centuries-old collection, which originated in ancient India and was later translated into Arabic in the 8th century, was selected for its universal themes and cross-cultural appeal. According to al-Malki, the initiative demonstrates how stories can travel across borders and create connections between communities with different cultural backgrounds. She added that such programmes illustrate the broader role literacy can play in cultural diplomacy. “Stories help people understand one another beyond the headlines,” al-Malki said, highlighting that books can introduce readers to perspectives they may not otherwise encounter. By framing reading as a form of dialogue, Qatar Reads seeks to create spaces where empathy, curiosity and conversation can flourish. “When people connect through stories, they begin to see themselves in others,” she said, stressing that this can serve as a foundation for stronger and more enduring relationships between communities and countries. At the same time, Qatar Reads is adapting to the changing ways audiences consume content, particularly through digital media. Al-Malki said the initiative has expanded its presence on digital platforms to reach wider and more diverse audiences, especially younger readers. One of its key innovations is the development of accessible audiovisual versions of children’s books in partnership with the Audio Education Complex. Produced annually, these adaptations combine narration, visuals and sign language, functioning as inclusive audiobooks that cater to different learning needs and preferences. “Digital media has transformed how people engage with stories, and we see this as an opportunity to make reading more accessible,” al-Malki said. Such formats allow children to experience literature in multiple ways, she added. Qatar Reads is also preparing to take part in the Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, which is expected to further expand literary collaboration and cultural exchange. The programme will highlight interactive and accessible initiatives designed to introduce global audiences to the region’s literary heritage. Al-Malki said audiences can expect renewed engagement with works such as Kalila wa Dimna, alongside illustrated interpretations by Qatari artist Wadha al-Athba. These efforts aim to present traditional narratives in ways that resonate with contemporary readers while preserving their cultural significance. As Qatar Reads continues to evolve, al-Malki underlined the enduring relevance of storytelling in an increasingly interconnected world. She said reading serves as a powerful tool for building bridges, encouraging dialogue, fostering empathy and strengthening cultural ties across borders. 

 Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari affirmed the State of Qatar's support for all diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and ensuring the stability of the region.During the ministry's weekly media briefing on Tuesday, Dr. Al Ansari stressed that the end of all crises is achieved at the dialogue table, even when conflicts involve military escalation.He said that getting to the negotiating table quickly and stopping attacks would benefit the peoples of the region and international peace and security, and would enhance global economic stability.Dr. Al Asari emphasized that any attack on the State of Qatar is an attack on its sovereignty, noting that the current circumstances require first repelling the daily attacks on Qatar before talking about mediation or peaceful solutions.He also reiterated the State of Qatar's stance calling for a cessation to the escalation in the region, recalling Doha's warning years ago that uncontrolled escalation could lead to disastrous consequences, and that what the region is currently witnessing represents a dangerous level of escalation that can be contained if the parties return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.Dr. Al Ansari revealed that the only official contact between the State of Qatar and Iran since the beginning of the war came through a telephone call between HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, noting that Doha's focus is currently on defending the state and the diplomatic efforts related to that.He pointed out that the Iranian statements, which included an apology and a commitment not to attack Arab countries, have not been interpreted into reality on the ground, as the region witnessed attacks on the UAE and Bahrain, followed by an attack on Qatar itself, stressing that Qatar will continue to defend its territory and national interests.The Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the State of Qatar continues its joint diplomatic efforts with the GCC countries through continuous meetings and communications to ensure full coordination at the defence and political levels. He noted that any Gulf statement that was considered a comment on statements or apologies from the Iranian side that were not interpreted into reality on the ground has become unnecessary as long as the attacks have not stopped.He pointed out that Iranian attacks on the State of Qatar continue daily, but Qatar's Armed Forces continue to repel and deter this aggression with high efficiency, and without the attacks causing significant damage on the ground. He stressed that security in the country remains stable thanks to the efforts of all national forces, and thanks to all the necessary precautions taken by the State of Qatar from a military standpoint to protect its territory and infrastructure. This has enabled the interception and thwarting of most of the attacks that targeted the country, as no attacks have been recorded on the vital civilian infrastructure on which the lives of the population depend.Regarding the repercussions of the Iranian attacks on the local economy, Dr. Al Ansari said that the attacks affected the Qatari and global economy, noting that Qatar was forced to halt production in some facilities as a precautionary measure, in the first action of its kind in the country's history, indicating that the resumption of production is linked to the technical conditions of the competent authorities.He considered the attacks on these facilities in the region a dangerous precedent that could cause significant economic damage to the countries of the region and also affect the global economy. He stressed that the repercussions of targeting energy facilities or disrupting maritime navigation in the region will not be limited to its geographical scope, but will be felt by global markets.He said that targeting water facilities, desalination plants, water reservoirs, food and medicine stockpiles, or pharmaceutical production facilities poses a grave danger to the people of the region and beyond. He emphasized the need to stop such attacks immediately, regardless of who is behind them, and pointing to the direct impact of attacks on vital facilities in some Gulf countries on the lives of residents.  Dr. Al Ansari stressed during the weekly briefing that targeting shipping lanes and maritime straits, including shipments of oil, food and medicine, is unacceptable and poses a high risk to all countries in the region.He affirmed Qatar's support for all diplomatic efforts aimed at avoiding escalation and protecting the safety of navigation in the Arabian Gulf.Dr. Al Ansari stated that the State of Qatar has taken all necessary measures to ensure the resilience of the national economy, while maintaining full commitment to international clients until conditions return to normal and the global economy resumes recovery.He warned of the danger of targeting vital infrastructure in the region, as it constitutes a direct threat to civilian lives and could lead to a widespread humanitarian catastrophe, with economic repercussions extending to various parts of the world.Regarding strategic partnerships with the United States of America and other allies in the field of defence and security, Al Ansari confirmed that these partnerships are not in question, as they represent a fundamental pillar in strengthening regional security and deterring any threats.He pointed to the existence of almost daily communications with US officials at various levels, and noted that Qatar deals with the on-ground reality according to the existing diplomatic coordination, and that decisions regarding the continuation or adjustment of defence strategies and monitoring of facilities are made based on the current data.Al Ansari stressed that the sovereignty of the State of Qatar is non-negotiable, affirming that the sovereign decision regarding its diplomatic relations or hosting any missions or international partners is a purely Qatari decision.Regarding Russia's communication with the State of Qatar to play a mediation role, Al Ansari explained that contacts with the Russian Federation continue at multiple levels, but there is no specific information in this regard, adding that any role that contributes to stopping escalation and ending attacks on Qatari territory is welcomed.With regard to diplomatic coordination, the Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Qatar maintains almost daily contacts with its regional and international partners to ensure security and stability in the region, affirming that international support and solidarity include defensive contributions and ongoing diplomatic cooperation.He called on the international community to use all its capabilities to ensure the immediate cessation of these attacks, stressing that any attack on civilian infrastructure and the people's right to security and stability will not be accepted and will be responded to accordingly.Regarding diplomatic movement, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari pointed to the continuation of Qatari diplomatic efforts to follow developments in the region. Qatar has received more than 57 international calls during recent days from leaders and ministers from various countries around the world to express solidarity and follow the situation, focusing on addressing threats resulting from the ongoing Iranian attacks on Qatar and the escalation of tension in the region.He also noted that HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, chaired the delegation of the State of Qatar at the joint summit of the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and a number of sisterly and friendly countries and the European Union via video conference.Participants discussed developments in the military escalation and its serious repercussions on regional and international security and stability, as well as ways for the parties to return to the negotiating table through peaceful means.Qatar's condemnation in the strongest terms of the Iranian attacks on its territory was expressed, while praising the efforts of its armed forces in defending the country, and affirming its full readiness to protect its sovereignty, its people and its vital infrastructure.It also renewed its rejection of attacks on the territories of sisterly and friendly countries and affirmed its full support for these countries in all measures aimed at preserving their sovereignty, security and stability.He praised the statement issued by the European Union, which reflects the strength of relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and calls for stopping escalation and preserving regional security and stability.Al Ansari also noted that HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi chaired the delegation of the State of Qatar last Sunday, at the extraordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level via video conference.He pointed to the State of Qatar's continued efforts through official statements and diplomatic messages to the United Nations and the international community to condemn the Iranian violations and reject any justifications for them, including the attacks on Bahrain and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, affirming its commitment to protecting its national sovereignty. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani discussed Wednesday with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif the latest regional and international developments of joint interest, particularly de-escalation, enhancing dialogue, empowering peaceful solutions, and supporting diplomatic efforts aiming to support security and stability in the region. This followed a telephone call His Highness the Amir held with Prime Minister Sharif. They also dealt with discussed bilateral relations and the means to enhance them.The Pakistan Prime Minister's Office (PMO) reported that Sharif appreciated Qatar’s constructive and proactive role in promoting peace, dialogue, and mediation across the region, and acknowledged its meaningful efforts to defuse tensions through diplomatic solutions. He assured the Qatari leadership that Pakistan would also continue to play a positive role in maintaining regional peace and stability.The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the current trajectory of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their shared resolve to further strengthen these time-tested fraternal bonds, the PMO noted. 

 Thailand announced Sunday its first civilian death in a week of fighting with Cambodia, as international efforts fail to stop violence that has forced hundreds of thousands from their homes.The latest killing comes a day after Bangkok denied US President Donald Trump's claim that a truce had been agreed between the Southeast Asian neighbours.The conflict, rooted in a colonial-era demarcation dispute along their 800km (500-mile) border, has displaced around 800,000 people, officials said."I have been here for six days and I feel sad that the fighting continues," 63-year-old Sean Leap told AFP at an evacuation centre in Cambodia's border province of Banteay Meanchey."I want it to stop," he said, adding he was worried about his home and livestock.At least 27 people have been killed, including 15 Thai soldiers and 11 Cambodian civilians, officials said Sunday.A Thai civilian killed in Sisaket province was the first non-military death recorded in the country since the latest round of fighting began on December 7, health ministry spokesman Ekachai Piensriwatchara confirmed to AFP.The Thai army said the 63-year-old man was killed by shrapnel after Cambodian forces fired rockets into a civilian area.Each side has blamed the other for instigating the clashes, claiming self-defence and trading accusations of attacks on civilians.Trump, who earlier backed a truce and follow-on agreement, said on Friday that the two countries had agreed to stop fighting.However, Thai leaders later said no ceasefire deal was made, and both governments said Sunday that clashes were ongoing.Thai defence ministry spokesman Surasant Kongsiri said Cambodia shelled and bombed several border provinces overnight.The Thai military has imposed a curfew from 7pm to 5am (1200 to 2200 GMT) in parts of Sa Kaeo and Trat provinces.Cambodia, which is outgunned and outspent by Thailand's military, said Thai forces had shelled and launched air strikes on Cambodian territory near the border Sunday.After Trump's promised truce did not come to pass, Cambodia shut its border crossings with Thailand on Sunday, leaving migrant workers stranded.Under a makeshift tent at an evacuation site in Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey, Cheav Sokun told AFP that her husband in Thailand wanted to return home.She and her son left Thailand alongside tens of thousands of other Cambodian migrant workers during deadly clashes in July, but her spouse stayed to work as a gardener with his "good Thai boss"."He asked me to return first. After that, the border was closed so he cannot come back," the 38-year-old said.In Thailand, officials said Sunday that nine civilians have died of non-combat-related causes after evacuating from their homes.The United States, China and Malaysia, as chair of the regional bloc Asean, brokered a ceasefire in late July.In October, Trump backed a follow-on joint declaration between Thailand and Cambodia, touting new trade deals after they agreed to prolong their truce.However, Thailand suspended the agreement the following month, after Thai soldiers were wounded by landmines at the border.Last week Trump pledged that he would "make a couple of phone calls" to get the earlier brokered truce back on track.However, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told journalists on Saturday that Trump "didn't mention whether we should make a ceasefire" during their Friday phone call.Anutin vowed to keep fighting "until we feel no more harm and threats to our land and people".A White House spokesperson later said that Trump expected all parties to honour commitments and that "he will hold anyone accountable as necessary to stop the killing and ensure durable peace". 

His Excellency Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh al-Khulaifi affirmed that Qatar has firmly established itself as a diplomatic force with a remarkable ability to open lines of communication and address complex global issues, through its key role in mediation efforts spanning multiple continents, demonstrating responsibility, commitment, and neutrality.During a press conference following the signing of the Doha Agreement, which aims to strengthen the commitment to peace between the Colombian government and the self-declared EGC group, HE al-Khulaifi highlighted Qatar's significant progress in resolving various conflicts. He pointed to Qatar's contribution to securing a ceasefire agreement in Gaza in collaboration with international partners. He added that Doha hosted a trilateral summit that paved the way for the peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Washington. He pointed out that Qatar's efforts culminated in November with the signing of a peace framework between the Congolese government and the March 23 Movement, marking a historic step towards ending a prolonged conflict.He added that Qatar continues to maintain open communication channels with both Ukraine and Russia, with ongoing humanitarian efforts focused on reuniting children affected by the conflict with their families.In Afghanistan, Qatar's efforts have contributed to the release of 10 detainees of various nationalities this year, he pointed out.Qatar also played a role in resolving the ongoing disputes between Afghanistan and Pakistan, facilitating the signing of the Doha Agreement between the two countries in October, he added.RESPONSIBILITY BEYOND GEOGRAPHICAL BORDERSDuring the press conference, the Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that these achievements reflect Qatar's deep belief that the responsibility for ensuring security and stability goes beyond geographical borders. He expressed Qatar's commitment to working with regional and international partners to find practical solutions that end conflicts and promote lasting peace and security.He also noted that the developments witnessed today are an extension of these efforts and a responsible step towards peace and development, adding that this agreement is expected to open a political path for establishing sustainable peace within an agreed framework in Colombia. He pointed out that the agreement will create an opportunity to end the armed conflict between the two sides and will significantly reduce illegal human trafficking and drug trade in specific regions of Colombia.He added that Qatar remains committed to supporting dialogue and resolving conflicts through peaceful means. He also praised the commitment, seriousness, and patience shown by both parties during the two rounds of mediation held in Doha. Since hosting the negotiations last September, both sides have made significant concessions to protect the Colombian people, prioritise their interests, and preserve the unity and stability of Colombia, he pointed out. He also expressed appreciation for the trust both parties have placed in Qatar's role as a mediator, facilitating these rounds and pushing them toward achieving security and stability.His Excellency al-Khulaifi highlighted the ongoing and crucial support provided by the delegations from Norway, Switzerland, and Spain, which contributed significantly to the success of this agreement. The agreement’s success stems from the trust both parties have in the mediators and their ability to navigate complexities with integrity and impartiality, he explained.His Excellency also explained that during Qatar's hosting of the first and second rounds of negotiations, both sides agreed on a series of measures to be implemented across 15 specific regions in Colombia. These measures aim to build trust between the parties, such as reducing drug production and replacing it with other legitimate economic resources. Additionally, they agreed to refrain from recruiting children and adolescents into armed groups and to designate areas for rehabilitating members of the armed group and reintegrating them into Colombian society.FOCUS ON REVITALISING LOCAL ECONOMIESHe emphasised that this agreement is primarily directed towards the friendly people of Colombia, ensuring their security, safety, and right to a dignified life. He noted that the agreement provides a framework for a responsible transition based on trust and mutual respect, aimed at protecting affected communities, revitalising local economies that have suffered from the prolonged conflict, and fostering the prospects of comprehensive peace.He further highlighted that this agreement represents a pivotal moment in the history of this phase, stressing that the direct responsibility for its implementation lies with both parties.Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Qatar's role as a mediator does no
