Katara the Cultural Village has added a new attraction to its Ramadan festivities. Midfa al Iftar, the traditional firing of the Ramadan cannon to announce breaking of the fast, has been attracting huge crowds at Katara since the beginning of the holy month.
As Magrib, the time to break the fast approaches, a number of visitors to Katara gather around the cannon to witness a tradition being revived. The cannon is installed in the southern region of Katara near the Meerat Ramadan, the Ramadan evening market.
Firing of the Ramadan cannon, a tradition still practised in Qatar and other parts of the Islamic world evokes memories of the past among the older generation while it arises curiosity and excitement among the youngsters.

The Ramadan cannon has also become an attraction for visitors to Katara.

Katara is hosting many Ramadan activities.

By reviving this tradition Katara aims to provide the Qatari and expatriate communities in Qatar an opportunity to know the past as well as the customs associated with Ramadan. Introduced at a time when most people didn’t own a clock or watch to know Iftar time, the tradition still remains popular.
Meanwhile, the Ramadan souq - Meerat Ramadan - at Katara has been attracting large number of visitors since the beginning of the holy month, with its diverse consumer products on offer at affordable prices.
During Ramadan the souq is open to visitors from 8pm to midnight daily. In the days to come, Katara will introduce several games and entertainment activities for children and families at the souq, most importantly the Katara Play Station Championship which will begin on Ramadan 15.
