Al Sadd maintained their perfect start to the Qatar Stars League with a 6-3 victory over Al Sailiya at Lusail Stadium on Thursday.
Akram Afif and Roberto Firmino scored twice each as The Wolves extended their winning run to four matches, taking their tally to 12 points at the top of the standings. Al Sailiya remain without a point after four defeats.
Al Sadd goalkeeper Bautista Burke denied Hashim Ali an early opener in the sixth minute before Afif broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a right-footed strike from inside the box.
Ali Olwan levelled for Al Sailiya in the 35th minute with a clever lob over Saad al-Sheeb. The goal was awarded after a VAR review despite an apparent goal-line clearance. Hashim Ali restored Al Sadd’s lead just before half-time before Firmino converted a penalty five minutes after the restart.
Ahmed Doozandeh reduced the deficit in the 58th minute, but Firmino struck again four minutes later. Afif added his second in the 75th minute. Mostafa Mashaal made it 6-2 in stoppage time before Olwan scored his second moments before the final whistle.
Earlier, Al Shamal and Al Wakrah shared a 1-1 draw at Al Bayt Stadium. The result saw second-placed Al Shamal move to eight points, while Al Wakrah remain 10th with two points.
Al Shamal took the lead in the 26th minute when Pablo Mari rose high to connect with a fine header from Mohamed Ben Romdhane’s corner. Al Wakrah equalised in the first minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half, with Aissa Laidouni lunging to kick the ball in after Al Shamal goalkeeper Babacar Seck had blocked an attempt from Ayoub Assal.
Both sides created chances towards the end but failed to find a winner. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Baghdad Bounedjah’s header for Al Shamal went diagonally towards the right corner but narrowly missed the post. Soon after the final whistle, Bounedjah was shown a red card for protesting to referee Mohammed Ahmed al-Shammari.
Meanwhile, Al Rayyan, on seven points, can move into second place with a win over Al Ahli at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Friday. Al Rayyan were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Duhail in the previous round after winning their opening two matches and will be keen to return to winning ways after reaching the Qatar Cup final at the expense of Al Shamal. Al Ahli, meanwhile, picked up their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Qatar SC. The result took them to four points and seventh place.
Elsewhere on Friday, Al Gharafa face Lusail at Khalifa International Stadium in a meeting between two sides heading into the game with contrasting momentum.,
Al Gharafa have lost their last two matches and slipped to ninth with three points following their 4-1 defeat to Al Sadd. Lusail, by contrast, will be full of confidence after recording their first-ever top-flight victory, a 4-0 demolition of Al Wakrah that lifted them to sixth with four points.
Saturday’s programme begins with Al Arabi taking on Qatar SC at Al Thumama Stadium. Al Arabi earned their first victory of the campaign with a 2-0 win over Al Sailiya, taking their tally to five points and moving them into fourth place. Qatar SC have endured a difficult start, with two defeats and a draw leaving them with one point in 10th place.
The fourth round concludes with Al Duhail hosting Al Shahaniya at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Al Duhail are fifth with five points after their 1-1 draw against Al Rayyan and will be seeking their second victory of the campaign. Al Shahaniya, meanwhile, have three points after losing 2-0 to Al Arabi in the previous round.
