Chinese visitors to Japan tumbled 45.2% in February from a year earlier, official data showed Wednesday, as the fallout from the countries' diplomatic spat bit for the third month running.Previously, Chinese travellers were the biggest source of tourists to Japan, contributing to a boom in the land of cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji that was fuelled by a weak yen, making shopping cheap.But in January, South Korea overtook China as the largest contingent, a trend that continued in February, with visitors from the country jumping 28.2% to 1.1mn.That compared with 396,400 visitors from mainland China last month, the Japan National Tourism Organisation said.By comparison, 18 countries and regions set new records for the number of their nationals who visited Japan in February — including South Korea, Taiwan and the US, data showed.The number of visitors from Hong Kong also shot up by 19.6% compared to last year.While February is typically the low season for travel to Japan, this year, due to the timing of Lunar New Year, the number of visitors shot up, the tourism group said, noting a particular uptick from East Asia.Japan-China ties have deteriorated since Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested in November that Japan might intervene militarily in any Chinese attempt to take Taiwan.China, which regards the democratic island as part of its territory and has not ruled out force to annex it, was furious over the comments.It summoned Tokyo's ambassador and warned Chinese citizens against visiting Japan.The number of Chinese visitors to Japan already tumbled 45% in December and nose-dived 60.7% in January.Instead, other countries, including South Korea, received an increase in the number of Chinese visitors.In January, 418,703 visited South Korea, up from 364,460 the same month last year, according to the Korea Tourism Organisation.The number of Chinese visitors to Thailand edged up 4.24% on average during the January-February period compared to the same period last year.Japan's cherry blossom season will be in full swing in late March and early April, but some local media reports suggest the decline in the number of Chinese visitors will continue.Contacted by AFP, one hotel in the Tokyo Bay area said the number of Chinese guests "had halved since November" and that will likely continue in March and April, although a handful of other hotels said they have seen no significant impact from the souring ties between Tokyo and Beijing. 

A record 97 million foreign tourists visited Spain in 2025 as the economically vital sector set a new benchmark for the second year running, the tourism minister said Thursday.The first estimation represented a 3.5-percent increase on the 2024 figure of 94mn, while spending climbed 6.8 percent to 135bn euros ($157bn), Jordi Hereu told a press conference in Madrid."This is a collective success by the whole country that perfectly demonstrates Spain's enormous attractivity, because Spain is a country that seduces the world," he said.Most visitors are European, with British, German and French holidaymakers accounting for around half of the arrivals, said Pedro Aznar, a professor at Esade business school.Like southern European neighbour Portugal, and Greece, Spain has rebounded from harsh austerity measures and heavy debt in the early 2010s, with a tourism rebound following the Covid-19 pandemic playing an important role.Tourism represents around 13 percent of the economy in the world's second most-visited country after France, whose dynamic growth has outstripped EU peers.The Bank of Spain has predicted growth of 2.9 percent in 2025 for the European Union's fourth-largest economy, more than double the average expected in the eurozone.Overtourism backlashBut as elsewhere, a backlash against the social and economic consequences of mass tourism is growing as Spain grapples with a persistent housing crisis.Locals have protested in their thousands, complaining that surging visitor numbers are changing the fabric of their neighbourhoods, particularly in hotspots including Barcelona, the southern region of Andalusia and the Canary and Balearic Islands.Although the sector's growth generates wealth and jobs, the high numbers have "a clear impact on residents" in specific destinations as tourist accommodation "offers higher profitability", Aznar told AFP.Barcelona and the popular southern coastal city of Malaga have announced measures to clamp down on short-term tourist rentals in a bid to tame popular discontent at rampant housing prices.The leftist government, under pressure to find a solution to one of the population's main concerns, has ordered online holiday accommodation giants Airbnb and Booking.com to take down tens of thousands of adverts deemed to have breached the regulations for short-term rentals."The impact on environmental sustainability is also relevant," Aznar said, in a country that suffers persistent water supply stress and emerged from a years-long drought in 2025. 

A Sri Lankan bus carrying local tourists visiting lush tea plantation hill towns plunged nearly 1,000 feet, with the crash killing 15 people, police said Friday. The accident took place on Thursday night in the mountainous Ella area, about 130kms east of the capital. Sixteen others on board were injured.The group was returning home after a holiday in the cooler hills when the bus hit another vehicle, crashed through guardrails and then shot over the side.
