Qatar has completed preparations for the ninth Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (Dimdex 2026), set to open today at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), according to Dimdex 2026 organising committee chairman Staff Brigadier (Sea) Abdulbaqi Saleh al-Ansari. Dimdex 2026 is held under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Supreme Commander of the Qatar Armed Forces. The event is organised and hosted by the Qatar Armed Forces with the theme A Global Hub for Defence Innovations – Invest in Possibilities to Shape a Secure Tomorrow.Speaking during a press conference Sunday in the presence of VIP Delegation and Protocol director Capt (Sea) Khalid Mohammed al-Siddiqi, Staff Brigadier al-Ansari said that the 9th Dimdex is the largest and most expansive since the exhibition’s inception. He noted that the scale of the event reflects growing international interest in Dimdex, which has established itself as one of the most prominent platforms on the global defence calendar. Staff Brigadier al-Ansari added that the exhibition brings together cutting-edge technological advancements and innovations to address evolving needs in the defence and security sectors, offering a comprehensive showcase of naval, air and land defence systems. Related sectors on display include cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), radar, advanced surveillance systems and other technologies critical to modern military operations.“The exhibition also represents a major hub for companies to conclude commercial agreements, drive business growth and stimulate investment, while providing valuable opportunities to establish strategic partnerships,” Staff Brigadier al-Ansari said. “Moreover, Dimdex facilitates the exchange of knowledge and expertise, offering fresh perspectives on defence-related issues and enabling a deeper understanding of emerging geopolitical and security challenges,” he added. Staff Brigadier al-Ansari highlighted that Dimdex 2026 will bring together more than 200 national and international companies specialising in security and defence, alongside eight major international pavilions. The event will also feature a strong presence of local companies from related sectors, as well as participation from various branches of the Qatar Armed Forces.Innovations and technologies will be showcased across more than 40,000sq metres of exhibition space. Staff Brigadier al-Ansari emphasised the decision to extend the exhibition to four days, in response to exhibitors’ requests, to ensure maximum benefit for participating companies and visiting delegations. Dimdex 2026 will host several established components, including the Middle East Naval Commanders Conference, organised in co-operation with the Joaan Bin Jassim Academy for Defence Studies. The programme includes official VIP delegation visits and the reception of international visiting warships at Hamad Port. In addition, specialised workshops will be delivered by exhibitors over three days, from January 20-22, in a dedicated exhibition area, enabling companies to present their latest innovations directly to delegations and attendees. As part of the event, Hamad Port welcomed eight visiting warships earlier today, including the Qatar Amiri Naval Forces vessel Al Fulk, in the presence of local and international media. Exhibition hours are from 9am to 5pm on January 19, 20 and 21, and from 9am to 4pm on January 22. Visitor access on the opening day, January 19, will be from 12 noon to 5pm. The event is expected to attract more than 25,000 visitors. Attendance is available through prior online registration on the website at www.dimdex.com 

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has been participating in the Qatar Camel Beauty Festival “Jazeelat Al-Atta”, held from January 15-February 7. Salim Qadri al-Yami, the assistant director of the MoECC’s Wildlife Protection Department, said that the department is participating through an awareness pavilion aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of environmental protection, preserving rangelands and wild grazing plants, highlighting the risks of overgrazing, regulating camel grazing practices, and stressing the need to maintain the cleanliness of camping sites after the end of the season. He added that the pavilion includes presentations on types of environmental violations, as well as the distribution of awareness and guidance materials to promote positive ecological behaviour among festival visitors. The ministry’s participation included the organisation of interactive environmental and agricultural workshops that addressed ways to protect the environment and introduced local wild plant seeds and cultivation methods. 

Qatar Charity (QC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have signed a letter of understanding (LoU) accompanied by a Data Sharing Addendum, to enhance their joint response to the humanitarian needs of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. The LoU was signed as part of a broader co-operation framework aimed at strengthening co-ordination and collaboration between the two organisations, particularly in the areas of shelter and settlement, as well as the provision of humanitarian aid materials and essential services for the most vulnerable refugee populations. The agreement was signed by Ivo Freijsen, representative of UNHCR Bangladesh, and Zakarya al-Motair, country director of Qatar Charity’s Bangladesh branch.

Commercial Bank has reported net profit of QR2.2bn in 2025 and recommended 30% cash dividend.The core income momentum remained "positive", supported by growth in balance sheet. The financials and proposed dividend distribution are subject to the Qatar Central Bank's approval and endorsement by shareholders at the group’s annual general meeting.Net interest income rose by 2.9% to QR3.41bn, and the group continued to grow core net fee and commission-based income, with fees and other income increasing by 10.8% to QR1.37bn.Total assets were up 16.4% year-on-year to QR192.9bn at the end of December 31, 2025. This is mainly driven by an increase in loans and advances to customers and an increase in investment securities.Investment securities grew 21.3% to QR40.3bn with the group investing in high-quality market securities. Net Loans and advances to customers increased to QR104.5bn, up 14.3% due to higher corporate, government and public sector, retail lending and acceptances. Excluding acceptances, which are trade related items, the loan growth is about 5.7%.However, the group net earnings fell 27.3% on an annualised basis, reflecting higher net provisions, increased operating expenses including IFRS 2 related long term incentive scheme (LTIS) movements, and a reported loss of QR144.7mn from its Turkish subsidiary including the impacts of hyper-inflation.The group also accrued for BEPS (Base Erosion and Profit Shifting) Pillar Two Tax, a charge of QR179.4mn. It may benefit from certain available reliefs on the finalisation of the draft executive regulations which is now expected in 2026.Net provisions were at QR1.19bn supported by strong recoveries which increased by 18.3% to QR711.8mn.Regarding core businesses, its retail and wealth business continues to deliver good and consistent returns. On the wholesale banking side, despite a challenging year, its lending book grew whilst it also continued to focus on transaction banking services.The associates continued to perform well as it continues to work closely with them in the execution of their strategies. The performance at Alternatif Bank in Turkiye improved at operating profit level.“2025 marked a year of disciplined execution and continued balance-sheet resilience across loans and investment securities. The group delivered positive momentum in core income and asset growth, underpinned by prudent governance and robust risk management framework," said Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali bin Jabor al-Thani, Commercial Bank chairman.Customer deposits grew 16.2% year-on-year to QR89.4bn in 2025 as the bank focused on reducing high cost of funding, while growing low-cost deposits by 4.5%, which represents 37% of the total customer deposits mix.Debt securities and other borrowings in issue increased to QR13.3bn and QR27.4bn respectively, as the group diversified its funding sources.The group’s Common Equity Tier 1 (CET 1) ratio was at 12.2%. The capital adequacy ratio (CAR) increased to 17.6%.Omar Hussain Alfardan, vice-chairman and managing director, said in 2025, the group delivered steady operating profit growth, with positive contributions from all entities."We strengthened our franchise through enhanced customer propositions, expanded fee-based income streams, and value-added services. In parallel, we advanced targeted innovation and capability building, while reinforcing our long-term commitment to sustainability and national talent development,” he added. 

The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) Sunday opened the week on a stronger note with its key index gaining as much as 57 points on an across the board buying.The Arab individuals were seen net buyers as the 20-stock Qatar Index shot up 0.52% to 11,124.98 points, although it touched an intraday high of 11,193 points.The telecom, real estate, industrials and insurance counters witnessed higher than average demand in the main market, whose year-to-date gains improved to 3.37%.About 83% of the traded constituents extended gains to investors in the main bourse, whose capitalisation added QR2.75bn or 0.41% to QR666.24bn mainly on small cap segments.The foreign institutions were increasingly bullish in the main bourse, whose trade turnover and volumes were on the decline.The Islamic index was seen outperforming the other indices of the main market, which saw as many as 5,285 exchange traded funds (sponsored by AlRayan Bank and Doha Bank) valued at QR0.05mn trade across eight deals.The foreign retail investors were seen net buyers, albeit at lower levels, in the main bourse, which saw no trading of sovereign bonds.The Gulf institutions continued to be net buyers but with lesser intensity in the main market, which saw no trading of treasury bills.The Total Return Index gained 0.52%, the All Share Index by 0.41% and the All Islamic Index by 0.81% in the main bourse.The telecom sector index shot up 1.26%, realty (1.07%), industrials (0.89%), insurance (0.61%), consumer goods and services (0.49%), transport (0.39%) and banks and financial services (0.1%).As many as 43 gained, while only three declined and six were unchanged.Major movers in the main market included Estithmar Holding, Widam Food, Alijarah Holding, Mannai Corporation, Qatar General Insurance and Reinsurance, Dukhan Bank, QIIB, Commercial Bank, Qatar German Medical Devices, Al Faleh Educational Holding, Baladna, Gulf International Services, Industries Qatar, Vodafone Qatar and Ooredoo. In the juniour bourse, Techno Q saw its shares appreciate in value.Nevertheless, QNB, Qamco and Al Mahhar Holding were the three shakers in the main market.The Arab individual investors turned net buyers to the tune of QR8.66mn compared with net sellers of QR21.06mn last Thursday.The foreign institutions’ net buying increased noticeably to QR3.48mn against QR0.51mn the previous trading day.The foreign individuals were net buyers to the extent of QR0.86mn compared with net sellers of QR2.93mn on January 15.However, the local individuals turned net sellers to the tune of QR16.9mn against net buyers of QR3.6mn last Thursday.The domestic funds were net sellers to the extent of QR5.89mn compared with net buyers of QR1.48mn the previous trading day.The Gulf retail investors turned net profit takers to the tune of QR0.11mn against net buyers of QR2.71mn on January 15.The Gulf institutions’ net buying weakened significantly to QR9.93mn compared to QR15.69mn last Thursday.The Arab institutions had no major net exposure for the second straight session.The main market saw a 9% fall in trade volumes to 117.04mn shares, 9% in value to QR353.58mn and 23% in deals to 30,251.In the venture market, a total of 0.02mn equities valued at QR0.04mn changed hands across nine transactions.

The second round of the Arabian Drag Racing League (ADRL) 2026 concluded at Qatar Racing Club (QRC) amid high-energy competition and a strong spectator turnout.Held under the patronage of QRC Chairman His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al-Thani, the event featured an expanded field of participants, with elite racers from the Gulf, the wider region, and the United States competing across eleven championship categories.The round crowned new champions in the quarter-mile (402m) Index car categories. Abdul Latif Abdul Latif won the INDEX 9.0 title after defeating defending round champion Sulaiman al-Sannousi in the final. Al-Sannousi finished second, while Nasser al-Khader claimed third place to secure his first podium finish of the championship.In another highlight, Adel Ghanem claimed the INDEX 8.50 title in his first-ever appearance in a final, after winning the decisive race against Hussein Ashkanani. Ashkanani recorded his second podium finish, having placed third in the first round, while Mohammed Suleiman Al-Shatti finished third in this round.As for the three Index categories competing over the eighth-mile distance, they witnessed intense competition. In the most powerful of these categories, INDEX 4.0, Tareq al-Bastaki secured the title after defeating Hussein Abdul Rahim Ahmed in the final, while last round’s champion, Rashid Al-Balushi, finished third this time.In the INDEX 4.50 category, Saeed al-Balushi reached the final for the second consecutive round but had to settle for second place, as the title went to Abdulaziz Al-Saleh. Meanwhile, Sean Langdon recorded his first podium finish in the championship by taking third place.After two days of competition in INDEX 4.80 category, Zayed al-Balushi clinched the title, while Nawaf al-Khaldi finished second. Third place went to Sheikh Jabor bin Hassan.Pro Mod standout Mike Stavrinous continued his dominance by securing a second consecutive title. The previous round’s winner topped qualifying and maintained a flawless run to the final, where he defeated Saeed al-Balushi, who finished second. American racer JR Gray, the 2025 NHRA Pro Mod champion, repeated his previous-round result by claiming third place.In the Super Street Pro category, the final was an exact replica of the first round’s showdown and ended with the same outcome, as Yousuf Al Ali was crowned champion for the second time this season. Jaber al-Maghribi finished second, while Abdulwahab Saleem claimed third place.Similarly, Mustafa Atat climbed to the top step of the podium in the Super Street Outlaw category for the second consecutive round, leaving second and third places to Badr al-Sharshani and Mohammed Kafoud, respectively.Al-Awad, Bu Rashid, and Mahmoudi crowned motorcycle championsMohammed al-Awad recorded his first podium finish in the championship by winning the title in the most powerful motorcycle category, Pro Bike. He defeated Mishaal al-Sabr in the final race, while first-round champion Bradley McCoy had to settle for third place in this round.In the Super Street Bike category, Mohammed Bu Rashid reached the final for the second round in a row and this time successfully claimed his first title of the championship at the expense of his rival Mishari al-Marri. Third place went to the opening round champion, Mishari al-Turki.In the Street Bike category, the title went to Mustafa Mahmoudi, who had finished third in the opening round, after he overcame Ahmed Karam in the final race. Meanwhile, the previous round’s runner-up, Dawood al-Sharshani, finished third in this round.QRC General Manager Sheikh Jabor bin Khalid al-Thani honoured the podium winners. The third round begins on Wednesday.
