Qatar Airways has more than 20 specialised workshops in Doha to maintain its fleet and support other technical aspects of its aircraft, according to the airline’s latest statistics. Qatar Airways also disclosed that 10 wide-body aircraft exteriors will be painted in Doha by this December, and over 150 aircraft are equipped with Starlink. Qatar Airways is the operator of the world’s first and largest Starlink-equipped wide-body fleet. Moreover, 30 Boeing 787-9 aircraft will be equipped with Starlink by the year-end. During a media tour of the carrier’s Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility on Wednesday, officials explained how these workshops support the airline’s smooth operations and the specialised work carried out there. Ali AlSaadi, chief MRO officer, told Gulf Times that the facility was set up when Hamad International Airport became operational. According to AlSaadi, Qatar Airways maintains its own aircraft in-house, from routine checks to full structural overhauls, backed by more than 20 specialised workshops in Doha covering everything from avionics to cabin interiors. “To ensure Qatar Airways traffic becomes smooth, we work hand-in-hand with multiple units, warehouses, technical facilities, and so on. We all share the same vision to ensure that we get the aircraft fine and fit,” said AlSaadi. The official said everything is done behind the scenes to ensure customers have the best experience. He explained: “What we do here is basically maintenance, repair, and to an extent, overhaul of Qatar Airways engines. We support the plan of the national carrier to upgrade its facilities. Part of our focus, over the past several years, has been to focus on Qatar Vision 2030 and include all the initiatives to bring in true value for the country and focus on capabilities, and increasing our output to meet the growing demand.” In addition, the airline has about 80 spare engines in the facility to back up the fleet. AlSaadi said the spare engines are sufficient to meet any eventuality and fulfil the fleet’s needs. He also highlighted that it is one of the biggest engine facilities in the world. The MRO unit’s in-house capabilities include several technical aspects, such as maintenance inspections to ensure the fleet remains safe, reliable, and ready to operate throughout peak travel periods. Other capabilities include structural inspections, aircraft modifications, component overhaul and repair, avionics maintenance, and cabin interior and seat refurbishment. Meanwhile, Capt Clifford Chetcuti, the chief flight operations and CAMO (Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation) officer, said that the Integrated Operations Centre (IOC), the operational nerve centre of Qatar Airways, brings together specialists, technology, and real-time data to monitor and manage the airline’s global network around the clock. “The IOC continuously re-routes flights, re-plans schedules, and re-briefs the crew to keep the network resilient to whatever is happening beyond Qatar’s borders,” said Capt Chetcuti. The same real-time co-ordination underpins winter planning and positions aircraft, crew, and ground teams ahead of seasonal weather at destinations across the network. The officials also added that the airline’s Ground Services has enhanced staffing, optimised operational resources, deployed additional mobile kiosks, and activated extra check-in facilities to support growing passenger demand during the winter travel season. 

High school students in Qatar will have the opportunity to experience real-world job tasks this fall as part of an innovative initiative examining how young people make career decisions.As part of a broader effort to align education with market needs, economists at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q), with the endorsement of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, will run workshops in high schools across the country to better understand how young people make career and study decisions. Funded by a Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council grant, this project will recruit more than 1,500 high schoolers to participate in interactive online workshops where they role-play performing real-world market tasks. The tasks are not invented for the exercise: they are drawn from a database of more than 17,000 real job postings. Each workshop corresponds to one broad college major category. In collaboration with their schools, which provide workshop space, students in grades 9-10 will be surveyed and then asked to complete tasks across six career categories. For STEM careers, students will perform data analysis and scientific problem-solving; in health and medicine, tasks include patient communication and health assessments; and in education, tasks include lesson design and communication activities. Business and economics tasks include negotiation and financial analysis; arts and humanities tasks include cultural interpretation and creative production; and social sciences tasks include policy reasoning and behavioural analysis. A post-workshop survey will gather students’ views on career and educational paths. At the end of the exercise, each participating student will receive a detailed report of their individual findings, and a small cash gift in appreciation for their time. Participating schools will keep access to the six-workshop platform free of charge after the study ends, and each school will receive an anonymised cohort insight report on its students’ preferences, beliefs, and performance. Schools interested in taking part in the 2026–2027 rollout can contact the project team at [email protected] What Do Jobs Really Look Like? is a research project led by GU-Q professor Dr Santiago García-Couto that gives secondary students a firsthand, interactive experience of the tasks involved in six broad fields of study and measures how that experience shapes their educational choices, beliefs, and preferences. The QRDI Council funds it through the Life-Long Education Call, jointly with Education Above All, with MoEHE endorsement and implementation in collaboration with Strategy Hub.

Qatar Airways will expand its global network to more than 170 destinations during the 2026-2027 winter season, the airline has announced. The airline offered the media a detailed tour of its facilities yesterday during a Media Open Day and highlighted the services available at Hamad International Airport (HIA). Several senior officials from the national carrier explained the roles of the organisation’s departments and how they contribute to the carrier’s successful operations. The airline expects around 4mn passengers during this winter season, with an average of over 510 daily flights. There were 96,031 passenger flights from January to August 2026, and 319,000 passengers used self-service check-in kiosks. The airline also said that there were 9.4mn departing passenger journeys during the first seven months of 2026 and 74,000 passengers used self-service bag drop in 2026. The rollout of Fast Pass biometric technology has already recorded approximately 27,000 passenger enrolments, helping create a faster and more seamless airport experience. HIA operates as one expansive terminal with five concourses — (A, B, C, D, E), delivering a seamless journey for passengers across every touchpoint. The airport has 62 contact gates, over 6mn annual passenger capacity, and 138 check-in counters. There is an area of 845,000sq m passenger terminal and 6,000sq m Orchard indoor tropical garden integrated within the airport experience. The media day activities included a visit to Qatar Airways Group facilities, including HIA, the Integrated Operations Centre, and the aircraft maintenance hangar, offering key insights into the complex co-ordination and operational expertise required to deliver world-class performance across one of the industry’s expansive global networks. “The winter schedule will see Qatar Airways operate more than 186 weekly flights across Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Americas and the Middle East, providing passengers with greater choice and seamless experiences through its award-winning hub at Hamad International Airport. This reflects the airline’s network growth and reinforces its position as a leader in global connectivity,” said the airline. With nearly 1,800 weekly frequencies planned during December 2026, Qatar Airways is entering the winter season with greater scale and a robust global footprint, delivering more choice and connectivity for global travellers. The visit to the carrier’s Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility provided an important insight into Qatar Airways’ operational ecosystem. Aircraft undergo maintenance and upgrades and are prepared to support the carrier’s operations worldwide in line with the highest standards of efficiency, safety, and quality. Similarly, Qatar Airways Ground Services plays a critical role in delivering a safe, seamless, and efficient passenger experience at HIA while ensuring operational readiness to support growing passenger demand during the winter travel season. “We have about 80 spare engines in the facility. We are doing all the maintenance activities in this facility to serve our fleet. These spare engines cost nearly $2bn and to maintain these assets we need well controlled environment. We have enough spare engines to meet the needs of the fleet and it is one of the biggest engine facilities in the world,” Ali AlSaadi, chief MRO officer, told Gulf Times. Faisal al-Boinin, vice-president, Base; Rabay Aladawi, vice-president, Workshops; Abdulaziz Saoud Heidous, senior manager, Supply Chain Operations, MRO; and Jassim Almadaadi, senior manager, Engine Facility, were also present to explain the department’s activities. At the Flight Operations and Integrated Operations Centre, Capt. Clifford Chetcuti, chief flight operations and CAMO officer;Capt Hassan Ali al-Hammadi, senior vice-president, Flight Operations; Capt Ali Saqer A S al-Rumaihi, acting vice-president, Navigation Services, briefed the group on the carrier’s operations. Ground services were explained by Abdulla Ali, senior vice-president, Ground Services; Mohammed Musa, senior manager, Hub Operations, HIA; Ali Darwish, vice-president, Terminal and Midfield Operations; Nasser al-Sada, Airport Flow Manager; and Maha al-Hijji, national training manager.

Qatar’s food safety system recorded a 97% compliance rate in the first half (H!) of 2026 after laboratory teams tested 7,755 samples drawn from local markets and border entry points. The Ministry of Public Health said the results highlighted the effectiveness of its National Food Monitoring and Surveillance Plan, which combines continuous market surveillance, laboratory testing and risk-based controls to protect consumers. The Food Safety Department examined products across a wide range of food categories between January and June. Only 3% of all samples failed to meet approved requirements and technical regulations, while the overwhelming majority passed the prescribed safety checks. Fresh fruit and vegetables returned one of the strongest results. Of the 1,476 samples tested from local and imported produce, 98% met the required standards. The examinations included checks for pesticide residues and microbial contamination. Fish and seafood also achieved a compliance rate of more than 98%, with 779 samples undergoing tests for chemical contaminants and indicators linked to proper handling, storage, safety and quality. Laboratory teams tested a further 1,374 meat and poultry samples, more than 93% of which were found to be compliant. Dairy products recorded similarly strong results. More than 98% of the 1,321 samples examined conformed to approved technical requirements. The ministry said it continued to follow up on a limited number of cases involving quality indicators and nutritional composition to safeguard the standard of products on sale. The surveillance programme prioritised widely consumed foods and products considered most closely linked to public health. By directing resources towards higher-risk categories, inspectors sought to identify potential hazards early and introduce preventive measures before they could pose a wider threat. The ministry said this risk-based approach helped maintain stable food-safety indicators and improve compliance during the six-month period. Inspection campaigns, laboratory analysis and early-warning programmes will continue under the national plan to ensure that food reaching consumers across Qatar remains safe, wholesome and compliant with regulatory standards.

Lekhwiya has developed a solar-powered system capable of harvesting moisture from the air and turning it into clean drinking water, offering a potentially vital supply for security teams operating in remote, contaminated or emergency-hit areas. Developed by the Internal Security Force’s Security Technologies Department, the system has been named “Badr” in memory of Second Lieutenant Badr Saad Mohammed al-Humaidi al-Dosari, who was martyred while performing his duties during the Israeli attack on Doha on September 9 last year. The announcement coincided with the first anniversary of the attack. Al-Dosari, who held the rank of Lance Corporal at the time of his death, was posthumously promoted to Second Lieutenant under the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. He was also awarded the Martyr’s Medal, Gallantry Medal, Military Duty Medal and Bravery Badge in recognition of his sacrifice. The “Badr” system draws humidity from the surrounding atmosphere, condenses it into water and processes it to meet international drinking-water safety and quality standards, according to Lekhwiya.  Atmospheric water generators generally work by cooling humid air below its dew point, causing water vapour to condense. The collected water is subsequently filtered, purified and treated before it becomes fit for consumption. Two versions of “Badr” have been produced to serve different operational needs. A compact indoor model can generate as much as 200 litres of water daily, enough to fill more than 600 standard 330ml bottles. A high-capacity field model can produce up to 5,000 litres a day, equivalent to more than 15,000 330ml bottles. This makes it suitable for large operational sites, temporary camps, disaster-response zones and locations where conventional water supplies are unavailable or disrupted. Lekhwiya said the system had been specially engineered to operate efficiently in environments affected by chemical or radioactive contaminants, strengthening its potential role in emergency and civil-defence operations. Its reliance on solar power also allows deployment away from conventional electricity networks, reducing dependence on fuel and supporting longer operations in isolated locations. The innovation brings together water security, renewable energy and emergency preparedness, while ensuring that the name of a fallen Lekhwiya officer lives on through a system designed to protect and sustain those serving in the field.

Qatar Airways has climbed back to between 90% and 95% of the passenger numbers it carried before the US-Iran crisis disrupted operations, and is now turning its focus to a major expansion drive over the next five years, Hamad Ali al-Khater, Group Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways, has said.“Qatar Airways has managed to reach approximately 90% to 95% of the passenger numbers recorded last year, while also achieving very high seat load factors, reflecting strong demand for travel across the carrier's network,” said al-Khater.Al-Khater was speaking to media visiting Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport facilities Wednesday.He said the destination network had expanded significantly, with the number of destinations served by the carrier rising from about 60 to 160, while passenger traffic through Hamad International Airport now exceeds 140,000 a day.According to the Group CEO, the coming years will usher in a new phase of growth as the company takes delivery of 138 new aircraft over the next five years, strengthening its operational capabilities and paving the way for further expansion. He noted that the workforce had successfully dealt with a major challenge faced by the company from February 28 as a result of the US-Iran crisis, stressing that the carrier's teams' ability to manage exceptional circumstances had helped restore operations rapidly.“The national carrier has successfully overcome one of the biggest operational challenges it has faced in recent years. The airline has returned to strong passenger traffic levels while simultaneously implementing ambitious plans for growth and expansion,” said the Group CEO.Al-Khater stressed that the company is currently in a period of accelerated growth, despite the exceptional circumstances and events that have affected the global aviation industry.He noted that the carrier will receive new A350-1000 aircraft next year, along with 777-9 aircraft, while also preparing to introduce the next generation of its Qsuite cabins to the fleet next summer.“The focus during the next phase will be heavily directed toward the new fleet, as it represents one of the key pillars of the growth strategy, improving operational efficiency and enhancing the passenger experience,” he said.The official explained that the carrier will take delivery of new A321 Long Range aircraft toward the end of the year, featuring a new cabin design and a new Business Class product, giving Qatar Airways greater flexibility to reach new markets and cities.He highlighted that other airlines have begun resuming operations and returning to Doha, further strengthening the airport's position as a global air transport hub.Al-Khater revealed that Qatar Airways has equipped around 150 aircraft with Starlink in-flight internet service, making it, according to him, the world's largest fleet equipped with the service.He explained that the carrier has updated its organisational structure to strengthen its focus on operations, particularly following the major challenges the company faced this year.“The strategy for the next five years will not be limited to expanding the passenger fleet and destination network, but will also place significant emphasis on air cargo operations, which performed above expectations this year. We will continue investing in its cargo capabilities, as air freight is one of the key drivers of growth amid Qatar's increasingly important role in global trade and supply chains,” he said.Regarding on-time performance, al-Khater confirmed that the carrier continues to rank among the highest-performing airlines in the Gulf region, despite challenges.“Our on-time performance rate stood at around 90% as of today. This performance reflects the efficiency of the operational teams and their ability to manage operations under difficult circumstances,” he said.“The next phase will be a growth era for Qatar Airways, built on fleet expansion, an increase in the number of destinations, the development of the passenger experience and the strengthening of air cargo operations, alongside continued investment in technology and services,” added al-Khater. Page 12

Qatar’s Abdulrahman Moustafa won the gold medal in the under-21 under-60kg category at the 24th Asian Cadet, Junior and Under-21 Karate Championship in Amman, Jordan. The championship, which concludes today, features more than 350 male and female athletes from 30 Asian countries.Moustafa produced a series of impressive performances on his way to the title. After receiving a bye in the draw, he advanced directly to the quarter-finals, where he defeated Chinese Taipei’s Shih Po-Yun 11-3. He followed that with an 11-7 victory over Saudi Arabia’s Sultan al-Masiri in the semi-finals to book his place in the final. Moustafa then beat India’s Viraj Saini 4-1 in the final to claim the gold medal.Qatar’s Hassan Mansour had earlier won the silver medal in the youth over-76kg category. The championship features kata and kumite competitions and is one of the continent’s leading age-group karate events.
