The delivery and logistics market for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is projected to reach $1.36bn globally by 2032, up from an estimated $936m in 2025, buoyed by expanding commercial applications across smart city frameworks. Dr Bidur Khanal, Department head of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Doha for Science & Technology (UDST), made the statement during a keynote on air mobility titled ‘Future Developments of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Qatar’ held on the sidelines of the recently concluded Autonomous e-Mobility Forum (AEMOB) 2026.In Qatar, sectoral expansion is gaining momentum through national initiatives such as the Tasmu Digital Valley programme, which identifies drones as a priority investment area targeting annual growth rates of roughly 13% through 2026, he said. Khanal noted that autonomous aerial systems are increasingly vital for Qatar's strategic and operational needs. He explained that Qatar's geographic positioning, extensive maritime borders, and high-density air traffic require advanced aerial monitoring systems. These platforms provide persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities alongside counter-drone defence systems to protect critical national infrastructure, he said. Beyond defence, Khanal noted that UAV technology supports domestic economic diversification. Practical applications in Qatar already span oil and gas pipeline inspections, drone-based security piloted across World Cup legacy venues, and marine conservation surveys tracking coastal dugong populations, he explained. To capture these opportunities, Khanal said Qatar is pursuing a phased industrial roadmap. The initial phase targets finalised co-production agreements with global partners, the rollout of executive regulations under Law No 10 of 2026, and expanded commercial licensing for inspection and delivery drones, he said. By 2030 to 2032, the strategy aims to establish an export-ready sovereign UAV product line, growing the local market to an estimated $150m-plus in commercial value, according to Khanal. “In the past, legacy procurement used to be just buying things from outside,” he, noted. “Now, we are facilitating collaboration with international organizations to execute technology transfer for local development.”However, scaling domestic assembly entails navigating distinct operational challenges, he pointed out. Qatar’s congested airspace, shared between military zones and civilian hubs like Hamad International Airport, demands complex flight deconfliction, he emphasised. He said all operations are strictly regulated by the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA), which oversees mandatory three-year renewable licenses under Law No 10 of 2026. He emphasised that closing local talent and supply chain gaps remains critical to driving long-term sovereign capabilities. To support this pipeline, UDST is embedding modular drone control architecture directly into its aeronautical curriculum, he also said. “We want our students to graduate knowing how to manufacture and code these systems,” Khanal noted, adding that the students are required to hold a valid drone operator license to pass their final exams.
