 Kuwait's General Staff of the Armed Forces announced late Tuesday that the country's air defence systems were responding to hostile missile and drone attacks.In a statement, the General Staff said that any explosions heard were the result of air defence systems intercepting the incoming attacks.

Gulf hostilities flared again yesterday as Iranian attacks on Kuwait damaged its airport and injured dozens while the US military carried out strikes ‌near the Strait of Hormuz, with diplomacy to halt the war showing little sign of progress.The attacks are the latest to ​test a shaky ceasefire, sending oil prices up nearly ‌2%, as the strait remains largely closed more than three months after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran. Flights at ‌Kuwait International Airport were suspended ⁠after an Iranian drone and missile attack ‌damaged airport facilities and diplomatic missions, killing one person and injuring ‌more than 60 others, Kuwaiti authorities and state media said.Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways later resumed flights after taking safety measures, the civil aviation authority said.Later, Kuwait's Foreign Ministry handed a formal protest note to the Iranian embassy, condemning "continued Iranian attacks". According to Kuwait's statement, delivered by Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Hamad al-Meshan, the decision also announced measures to reduce the size of Iran's diplomatic mission, including declaring two diplomats persona non grata.Earlier, Iranian ⁠media reported that Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) had attacked the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and a US airbase, as well as a vessel identified as Panaya. US Central Command denied its bases had been hit and said Iranian ballistic missiles failed to strike their targets in the region.IIGC however, said they did not fire at Kuwait's airport and blamed the destruction on US interceptor missiles that failed to hit their targets, according to Iranian state media. The US military said that was not accurate, and that Iranian drones targeted the airport deliberately.CENTCOM said it had carried out a new round of "defensive strikes" in southern Iran, targeted missile launch sites and Iranian boats seeking to lay mines, and conducted strikes on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz after attempted Iranian attacks. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi later said in a post on X that his country's armed forces were conducting "self-defence strikes on sites the US is permitted to use to attack civilian shipping and violate the ceasefire". "Any ​hostile act will be met with an immediate, decisive response," he added.Since the US and Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28, Tehran has repeatedly attacked targets in the Gulf region home to US military bases, hitting civilian and military targets.Hostilities have occasionally flared up in recent weeks despite a ceasefire agreed in early ‌April, as the US has pushed to reopen the ⁠Strait of Hormuz, a route ​that handled roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments before the war. Last week, Iran and the US signalled ​progress towards a tentative initial agreement to halt the war and reopen the strait, but the two sides have yet to sign off on the deal, which would leave more complex negotiations for later.Mohsen Rezaei, military adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, said Iran would not allow the US to "overreach" either in negotiations or ceasefire arrangements.In a post on X, he warned that any aggression would be met with a barrage of missiles and drones.Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the United Arab Emirates president, said repeated attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain required a firm and cohesive Gulf response. "The aggression does not target one country alone, but all of us," he wrote on X.Since mid-March, Trump has repeatedly said he is close to a deal to end the fighting and pave the way for negotiations on thorny issues including the future of Iran's nuclear program.In a podcast interview released yesterday, Trump said Iran had agreed to not have a nuclear weapon and that Khamenei was involved in negotiations.Yesterday, Israeli drone strikes killed at least six people in southern Lebanon and targeted a car just south of Beirut, Lebanese security sources said, while Israel said it intercepted a hostile aircraft likely fired by Hezbollah. There was no immediate response from the Israeli military to Reuters questions about the drone strikes, but the attack on the car appeared to mark the closest attack to Beirut since Trump asked Israel not to hit the Lebanese capital, under a US-mediated partial ceasefire announced on Monday. In his podcast comments, Trump acknowledged having called Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "crazy" during a reportedly expletive-filled phone exchange over the fighting in Lebanon as he sought a deal over the wider war."At some point I said, Bibi, we got to stop this. We got to stop it," Trump said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname.Netanyahu told CNBC in an interview ‌that he and Trump sometimes had "tactical disagreements" but ​that they agreed on the main issues concerning Iran. 

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) said its air defence systems intercepted two ballistic missiles and three drones launched from Iran on Friday, as regional tensions continued to escalate. In a statement carried by the Emirates News Agency, the UAE Ministry of Defence said the latest attack resulted in three people sustaining moderate injuries. The ministry added that the country's air defences had intercepted 551 ballistic missiles, 29 cruise missiles and 2,263 drones since the beginning of the Iranian attacks on the UAE. According to the statement, the total number of injuries linked to the attacks has now risen to 230, including Emirati nationals as well as Arab and foreign residents. The UAE armed forces said they remained on "full alert" and were prepared to respond to any threats targeting the country’s security and stability. The ministry stressed that the military would respond firmly to any attempt to undermine national security, while ensuring the protection of the country's sovereignty, strategic interests and critical capabilities 

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine was in no hurry for peace and if it did not want to resolve their conflict peacefully, Moscow would accomplish ⁠all its goals by ⁠force.Putin's remarks on Saturday, carried by state news agency Tass, followed a vast Russian drone and missile attack that prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to say that Russia was demonstrating its wish to continue the war while Kyiv wanted peace.Zelensky was due to meet US President Donald Trump in Florida to seek a resolution to the war Putin launched nearly four years ago with a full-scale invasion of Russia's smaller neighbour.The White ⁠House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Putin's remarks.Russian commanders told Putin during an inspection visit that Moscow's forces had captured the towns of Myrnohrad, Rodynske and Artemivka in Ukraine's eastern region of Donetsk, as well as Huliaipole and Stepnohirsk in the Zaporizhzhia region, the Kremlin said on the Telegram messaging app.Ukraine's military rejected Russia's assertions about Huliaipole and Myrnohrad as false statements.The situation in both places remains "difficult" but "defensive operations" by Ukrainian troops are ongoing, ⁠the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said in a statement on social media.The Southern Command of Ukraine's Armed Forces said on Telegram that "fierce fighting" continued in Huliaipole. "However, a substantial part of Huliaipole continues to be held by the Defence Forces of Ukraine."Verifying battlefield claims is difficult as access on both sides is restricted, information is tightly controlled and front lines shift quickly, with media relying on satellite and geolocated footage that can be partial or delayed.Zelensky meanwhile said he would push a new peace plan for Ukraine when he sits down with Trump in Florida, bolstered by the backing of European leaders but with his capital Kyiv still reeling from a massive Russian bombardment.The US president has been non-committal on the revised 20-point proposal for ending the nearly four-year conflict, while Putin has offered no indication that Moscow would find it acceptable.Trump has made ending the Ukraine war a centrepiece of his second term as a self-proclaimed "president of peace", and he has repeatedly blamed both Kyiv and Moscow for the failure to secure a ceasefire.The meeting, to be hosted by Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence at 1pm (1800 GMT), will be their first in-person encounter since October, when the US president refused to grant Zelensky's request for long-range Tomahawk missiles.And the Ukrainian leader could face another hard sell this time around, with Trump insisting that he "doesn't have anything until I approve it”.The talks are expected to last an hour, after which the two presidents are scheduled to hold a joint call with the leaders of key European allies.The revised peace plan, which emerged from weeks of intense US-Ukraine negotiations, would stop the war along its current front lines and could require Ukraine to pull troops back from the east, allowing the creation of demilitarized buffer zones.As such, it contains Kyiv's most explicit acknowledgement yet of possible territorial concessions.It does not, however, envisage Ukraine withdrawing from the 20% of the eastern Donetsk region that it still controls – Russia's main territorial demand.Before landing in Florida, Zelensky made a stopover in Canada during which he held a conference call with European allies, who pledged their full support for his peace efforts and vowed to maintain pressure on Moscow.The Ukrainian leader said he hoped the talks in Florida would be "very constructive".He also told reporters that he would press Trump on the importance of providing security guarantees that would prevent any renewed Russian aggression if a ceasefire were secured."We need strong security guarantees. We will discuss this and we will discuss the terms," he said.Ukraine insists it needs more European and US funding and weapons – especially drones.Russia has accused Ukraine and its European backers of trying to "torpedo" a previous US-brokered plan to stop the fighting.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told state news agency Tass that Moscow would continue its engagement with US negotiators but criticized European governments as the "main obstacle" to peace."They are making no secret of their plans to prepare for war with Russia," Lavrov said, adding that the ambitions of European politicians are "literally blinding them”.
