Enzo Maresca said he was "very happy" on Saturday after his first game in charge of Manchester City, despite a defeat on penalties to Inter Milan after the sides drew 1-1 in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong on Saturday.Matteo Lavelli netted the decisive spot-kick for a 3-1 shootout win for the Italian champions as Maresca led out City for the first time since taking over from legendary Pep Guardiola in June."I'm very happy with the performance," the former Chelsea and Leicester boss told reporters."Many positive things, including minutes for the legs, that's very important."Like always, there are things we can do better, but slowly, slowly, we're going to improve."An open first half saw the Premier League side take the lead in the 14th minute when Antoine Semenyo jinked towards the byline and crossed for youngster Divin Mubama to tuck in from a few yards out.Semenyo was a constant menace and almost scored a wonderful solo goal soon afterwards when he weaved through several Inter defenders but could not squeeze the ball past goalkeeper Josep Martinez.Within minutes Inter equalised when City failed to clear a Jamal Iddrissou cross and the ball fell for Benjamin Pavard to slot home from near the penalty spot.Both sides missed golden chances soon after the restart but the game drifted as the substitutions piled up.City's Vitor Reis sliced a shot against the crossbar while young winger Ryan McAidoo hit the post as the Manchester club pushed for a late winner that never came."We were pressing in the wrong way, we conceded some switches of play... because we were late in the pressing," Maresca said of the first half performance."At half-time we adjusted something, and I think, second half, in terms of pressing, we were much, much better."Maresca took over in June and faces a tough task to succeed Guardiola, who won 20 trophies in a glorious decade at City.Many clubs have struggled after the exit of serial title-winning managers, with local rivals Manchester United notably falling from the pinnacle of the English game after Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.Nearly 43,000 fans converged on Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium for the match, though patches of unsold seats left the atmosphere subdued at times.Several of City's World Cup stars, including Norway striker Erling Haaland and Spain captain Rodri, have not travelled.Maresca has confirmed the pair will not join the squad in Seoul for the two remaining games on the club's Asia tour, against a K League all-star team and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid next week.City face Arsenal in the Community Shield against Arsenal on August 16 before starting the new Premier League season at home to Bournemouth a week later.Inter round off pre-season with a derby against AC Milan followed by another all-Italian clash with Juventus in Perth, Australia, before launching their Serie A title defence against Monza on August 22.

Brazil striker Richarlison scored a 90th-minute winner and club record signing Sandro Tonali got his first goal as 10-man Tottenham beat London rivals Chelsea 2-1 in a feisty pre-season friendly in Sydney on Saturday.Both sides fielded strong line-ups and Spurs struck first on 19 minutes through Tonali's deflected strike before Estevao levelled the scores barely two minutes later.Tottenham defender Kevin Danso was given a straight red card just three minutes after coming off the bench at the break for bringing down Joao Pedro, with Chelsea dominating proceedings in the second half.But in front of 80,363 fans at Stadium Australia, they failed to capitalise and Spurs stunned them with a late winner.The loss means new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will head to Hong Kong for a clash with Juventus on Wednesday on the back of his first defeat, following a 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers last week.The Spaniard has overseen a string of high-profile signings since being appointed, headlined by Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, as he bids to rejuvenate the club after their disappointing 10th in the Premier League last season.Spurs, who fared even worse, coming 17th to narrowly miss relegation, have also been on a spending spree with Matheus Fernandes arriving from West Ham and Tonali from Newcastle.They fly home after a 2-0 win over Auckland FC and 1-1 draw with Sydney FC.Most of Chelsea's close-season signings have yet to link up with the squad, including Rogers.But right-back Marco Palestra, who joined from Atalanta, got his first minutes while Cole Palmer and Estevao started after a slew of youngsters were used against Western Sydney Wanderers.Tottenham midfielder Fernandes, who missed the Sydney game with "fatigue in his calf muscle", was again absent, as was James Maddison with a "small problem". But Tonali made his maiden start along with fellow new recruit Andy Robertson.After a cagey start, tempers flared when Conor Gallagher hacked down Chelsea's Dario Essugo in the 10th minute with players pushing and shoving each other. Gallagher was shown a yellow card and Essugo continued.Spurs broke the deadlock after a nice break down the right from Manor Solomon, who fed Tonali on the edge of the box with his shot taking a deflection.But it was a short-lived lead as Estevao headed home at the far post after Romeo Lavia broke free from midfield and they went to the break at 1-1 with Spurs having the better half.Danso's brain-fade allowed Chelsea to dominate the second-half with Estevao rattling the crossbar among a slew of chances.But, in a worry for Alonso, they failed to make the most of the extra man and Spurs stole their thunder when Richarlison side-footed home at the death.  

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso got his reign off to a winning start on Tuesday in a dramatic 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers, with Brazilian striker Joao Pedro scoring a late nine-minute hat-trick to ensure victory.The former Real Madrid coach, who took over on July 1, is without many of his big guns for their pre-season tour and played 60 minutes with a side full of youth at Stadium Australia.It was a see-sawing affair, with Chelsea coming from behind three times.Kazakh 17-year-old Dastan Satpaev lashed home on his debut in the sixth minute, but Chelsea then conceded twice with their defence run ragged before Portugal youth international Dario Essugo made it 2-2.The Sydney side then went 3-2 and 4-3 ahead in the second half before Pedro's heroics."I think it has been a very useful friendly that we can learn a lot from," Alonso said."There were moments that we were struggling to find solutions, and we need to have this. The positive is that we corrected them."And there were moments where the game management is something that we can learn from."But useful for the future, and as well for minutes for everyone, and no injuries."The young ones got good experience, and the senior ones they came on with good impact."Alonso faces a huge task to get Chelsea back in the running for major honours after their 10th-place finish last season and failure to make Europe.An even tougher test will come on Saturday when they meet London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the same venue before further friendlies in Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia.Chelsea have made four key summer signings so far as they rebuild - attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers, winger Geovany Quenda, defender Marco Palestra and striker Emmanuel Emegha.Only Italy's Palestra, who arrived from Serie A side Atalanta, is on the tour, with World Cup players including England's Reece James and Argentina's Enzo Fernandes also absent.Alonso deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation with Josh Acheampong, Liam Delap and Tosin Adarabioyo - who began as captain - providing experience to a team featuring several youngsters who came through the Chelsea academy.They got off to a flyer when Satpaev raced clear after a lovely through ball by Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and finished powerfully.But it was a fleeting lead, with the Wanderers' Anthony Pantazopoulos nodding home from a corner eight minutes later with Chelsea guilty of poor defending.It sparked the home team into life and Aydan Hammond made it 2-1 with a cool side-footed finish after Chelsea were sliced open again at the back.Essugo's goal was quality, finishing off a flowing move with a one-two off Reggie Walsh before stroking into the far corner to send them to the break all square.Once again Chelsea went to sleep, and a lovely turn and finish from Dylan Scicluna put the Sydney side 3-2 ahead in the 62nd minute with Alonso making nine changes immediately after.Cole Palmer came on and the intensity lifted to set up a sensational finale that included five more goals as Pedro staked his claim to be Chelsea's first-choice striker. 

Qatar Foundation (QF)’s Ability Friendly Programme, through its summer camps, is empowering participants with the confidence and skills needed to thrive in day-to-day life. Meant for children with special needs, the summer camps running from July 5–16 and July 19–30 welcome those aged 5 to 18 years. “This year, we are welcoming children and young people aged 5-18 years. We expect approximately 15 participants in each camp, allowing us to provide more personalised experience and ensure every child receives the attention and support they need,” Noof al-Taweel, co-curricular activities specialist, Ability Friendly programme, told Gulf Times. Al-Taweel noted that the participants have a range of different abilities and support needs, and the activities are designed to allow everyone to participate at their own pace while enjoying shared experiences with their peers. “We welcome the participants to the two-week camps running in July. Participants enjoy a wide variety of activities, including horse riding, STEM activities, educational field trips, and community outings, in addition to sports, arts and crafts, music, sensory activities, life skills, and group games,” explained al-Taweel.'According to al-Taweel, every activity is thoughtfully adapted to meet individual needs, allowing each participant to engage with confidence and enjoy the experience in their own way. The programme is delivered by trained inclusive coaches and facilitators who provide the support needed to help every child succeed.  “For us, empowerment begins with belonging. Every child deserves to feel valued, capable, and included. Whether it is trying a new activity, making a new friend, or simply feeling confident enough to participate in a group setting, these moments have a lasting impact,” continued the official  Beyond developing communication, teamwork, and confidence, al-Taweel said that the programme encourages participants to become more independent in their daily routines, make decisions with confidence, and build meaningful friendships in a supportive and inclusive environment.  She noted: “Every participant comes to us with unique strengths and individual support needs. Some may require additional support with communication, social interaction, sensory regulation, or adapting to new environments, while others may have physical support needs.”  Al-Taweel said that the programme focuses on each child’s abilities rather than the challenges.  The official highlighted that one of the most rewarding aspects of the programme is witnessing the growth in the participants. She stated: “Children who may begin the programme feeling shy or hesitant often leave with greater confidence, stronger communication skills, and new friendships. We see them taking more initiative, participating more actively in group activities, and becoming increasingly willing to try new experiences.” “Parents frequently tell us they notice these positive changes at home as well. Some have shared that their children’s mood is more positive throughout the day and that they are more focused and engaged in other programs and activities after leaving camp. Knowing that the impact continues beyond our program is incredibly meaningful to us,” added al-Taweel.

Qatar suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland in an international friendly at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin yesterday, as Julen Lopetegui’s side continued their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Al Annabi were undone by an early Nathan Collins goal in the fifth minute and could not find a response in a contest that saw both sides reduced to 10 men. The match marked the start of the final phase of Qatar’s build-up to the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where they will make their second successive appearance at the global showpiece. Ireland made a bright start and took the lead after just five minutes when Jack Moylan delivered a dangerous free-kick into the box and captain Collins rose highest to head past goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. The hosts continued to threaten early on, with Troy Parrott curling narrowly wide, while Qatar struggled to create clear openings despite enjoying more possession as the first half progressed. Akram Afif came closest for the visitors midway through the half after being played through by Yusuf Abdurazzaq, but the striker fired well off target. Qatar gradually settled into the contest and Homam Al Amin, making his 100th international appearance, sent a free-kick over the crossbar from a promising position. The game took a dramatic turn late in the first half when Ireland midfielder Moylan, who had impressed throughout, was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Jassem Gaber in the 43rd minute. The dismissal gave Qatar renewed momentum before the break, but Lopetegui’s side struggled to seriously test Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Lopetegui made five changes shortly after the restart, introducing Almoez Ali, Ahmed Alaaeldin, Karim Boudiaf, Assim Madibo and Mohamed al-Mannai as the coach opted to put 21 players through their paces. Qatar enjoyed more of the ball in the second half but failed to make their pressure count. Edmilson Junior and Alaaeldin both wasted decent opportunities, while Abdulrazzaq saw a deflected effort saved by Kelleher. Ireland, meanwhile, threatened sporadically on the counter and nearly doubled their lead late on when Collins headed across goal, but both Parrott and James Abankwah failed to convert from close range. **media[451563]**The friendly became increasingly heated in the closing stages when substitute Almoez Ali was sent off in the 77th minute for shoving Jayson Molumby, reducing Qatar to 10 men as both teams finished a player short. There was also concern for al-Mannai, who was forced off injured only minutes after coming on, with veteran Hassan al-Haydos replacing him late in the match. Qatar will now continue their preparations with a final warm-up match against El Salvador in Los Angeles on June 6. Al Annabi have been drawn in Group B at the World Cup and will open their campaign against Switzerland on June 13 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium before taking on co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on June 19. Qatar will conclude the group stage against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on June 24. 

Qatar will face Ireland in an international friendly at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on May 28 as part of Al Annabi’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico in June and July. Qatar have been drawn in Group B alongside Canada, Switzerland and one European playoff winner. In the latest FIFA rankings released in January, Qatar are ranked 56th, while Ireland sit 59th. The two sides have met twice before during the European qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Their first meeting in Debrecen, Hungary, in March 2021 ended in a 1-1 draw, while the return fixture in Dublin saw Ireland claim a 4-0 victory. As part of their ongoing preparations, Al Annabi will also play friendlies against Argentina and Serbia during an international Qatar Football Festival in Doha from March 26 to 31, which will feature six World Cup-qualified teams. The Aviva Stadium, a multi-purpose venue with a capacity of 51,700, is the official home of the Ireland national team.

The Philippines has showcased unified efforts to promote the country’s diverse offerings, including halal and Muslim-friendly tourism, as part of its bid to attract Qatari travellers during the recently held Qatar Travel Mart (QTM) 2025. The Department of Tourism (DoT), led by Undersecretary Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar, and the Philippine embassy in Qatar, joined forces with other government agencies during the event to position the Philippines as a premier travel destination and highlight the country’s hospitality and cultural richness. Valderrosa-Abubakar said the Philippine delegation’s presence was part of a broader effort to highlight readiness and inclusivity, adding that the participation at QTM 2025 reflected a “whole-of-nation” approach, with representatives from local government, the private sector, and Muslim affairs joining the campaign. She explained that the DoT has institutionalised Muslim-friendly tourism through Memorandum Circular 2024-003, which sets six guidelines for accredited establishments. “As of today, we have already recognised 42 accommodation establishments throughout the country to be Muslim-friendly,” she said, citing Megaworld Hotels & Resorts’ 13 properties receiving the ‘Muslim-Friendly Accommodation Establishment’ certification, and Robinsons Hotels and Resorts (RHR) as among those inspected by the DoT. The accreditation requires staff training, Qibla directional markers in rooms, alcohol-free minibars, and listings of nearby mosques and halal restaurants, Valderrosa-Abubakar further explained. Beyond accreditation, the DoT has rolled out new facilities and tools, stated Valderrosa-Abubakar, who pointed to the launch of a Muslim-friendly travel log, accessible via QR code, and the opening of the Marhaba Boracay Cove, an “800sq m beach area exclusively for Muslim travellers”. “After Marhaba Cove, Bohol province is also looking for a place that can be converted to a beach cove for our Muslim brothers and sisters,” she told Gulf Times on the sidelines of the travel mart, adding that hotels in Cebu are being prepared ahead of the Asean Tourism Forum 2026. Asked about developments in the Philippines’ inbound tourism, the undersecretary noted that there’s been a “10%” increase from 2023 to 2024, describing the growth as “steady, not stagnant but increasing”. According to Valderrosa-Abubakar, Malaysia ranks among the Philippines’ top 10 source markets. She also said the DoT is benchmarking with Thailand’s halal tourism model and learning from Japan’s service providers to strengthen its offerings. Valderrosa-Abubakar also underscored the impact of halal certification on Muslim tourists, citing how halal-certified Filipino food had impressed a top tourism officer from Brunei. This reception demonstrates both readiness and innovation, positioning halal tourism as a bridge to stronger ties with the Gulf market, she added.

South Korea's automobile exports rose 16.8% year-on-year in September, supported by robust overseas demand for eco-friendly vehicles in Europe and Asia, data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy showed on Monday, as cited by Yonhap News Agency. The value of outbound automobile shipments reached $6.41 billion last month — the highest figure for any September on record. In terms of volume, exports rose 11% from a year earlier to 228,000 units.Between January and September, South Korea's accumulated auto exports hit an all-time high of $54.1 billion. By type, exports of eco-friendly cars — including electric, hybrid, and hydrogen-powered vehicles — surged 47.5% year-on-year to 90,496 units, marking the first time monthly exports exceeded 90,000 vehicles and accounting for nearly 40% of total car exports. Among them, hybrid vehicle shipments jumped 55.7% to 57,824 units, while electric vehicle (EV) exports climbed 38.9% to 29,288 units, extending gains for the fourth consecutive month. On the domestic front, auto sales rose 20.8% year-on-year in September to 158,000 units, the highest level since November 2023. EV sales surged 135% to a record monthly high of 28,760 units. For the January-September period, domestic EV sales increased 57.5% to 170,000 units, surpassing last year's total of 142,000. The data also showed domestic automobile production climbed 8.9% in September to 334,000 units, aided by a higher number of working days compared with the previous year.
