His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani reaffirmed Qatar's unwavering support for the brotherly Palestinian people in their just struggle to restore their land, safeguard their holy sites, and secure their inalienable rights, stressing that this position reflects a moral and fraternal duty grounded in the principles of justice, freedom, and the right of peoples to self-determination. His Highness the Amir emphasised that the Palestinian cause, with its firmly established principles, remains a fundamental test of the fairness of the prevailing international order and its commitment to international law and legitimacy. The statement was delivered in a message from His Highness the Amir on the occasion of the annual celebration organized by the United Nations Office in Vienna to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The message was read on his behalf by Jassim Yaqoub al-Hammadi, Ambassador of Qatar and its Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Vienna. In the message, His Highness the Amir expressed his pleasure at addressing the occasion, which was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in its 1977 resolution to affirm the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them their natural right to self-determination and to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital. His Highness noted that the day serves as an opportunity to honour the steadfast struggle of the Palestinian people and to send a clear message to their sons and daughters that the world does not forget their just cause, nor their prolonged suffering and pain. He added that the day also serves as a message to the international community and its free peoples, reminding them of their responsibilities and obligations under international law and of the necessity of upholding the principles of international law and the international order. His Highness the Amir said that the excessive use of force against the unarmed Palestinian people, along with the continued double standards in the enforcement of international law, international humanitarian law, and human rights law with regard to Palestine, undermines confidence in the international community and encourages further violations. While welcoming the voices of conscience and the forces of peace around the world, His Highness stressed that the Palestinian cause is not an issue of terrorism, but rather the cause of a people living under a prolonged occupation that must come to an end, affirming that only a just peace can guarantee security for both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples. His Highness further stated that the developments witnessed over the past two years, including the unprecedented escalation of violence, repressive measures, and Israeli violations against the brotherly Palestinian people, place a moral and legal responsibility on the international community to support a just settlement of the Palestinian issue. He added that these developments further underscore the urgent need to intensify efforts to ensure protection for the Palestinian people and their holy sites. His Highness the Amir added that the unprecedented human tragedies that have unfolded in the Gaza Strip, and whose repercussions have extended to the West Bank and the wider region, have laid bare the urgent need to put an end to the historical injustice endured by the Palestinian people. He said that for more than two years, Qatar has worked with determination and perseverance, exerting every possible effort through responsible mediation to facilitate reaching an agreement that would bring an end to the brutal Israeli war and the resulting bloodshed and unprecedented human suffering, in a manner that lays the foundation for a political path toward a just and comprehensive peace. His Highness also reviewed the efforts exerted by Qatar, in coordination with other countries in the region, to end the war on Gaza. He said that following the declaration signed with the presidents of the United States, Egypt, and Turkiye on October 13 in Sharm El-Sheikh, the success of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and the US peace initiative adopted by the UN Security Council has become a collective responsibility that requires ensuring its full implementation in order to achieve peace and stability. In this context, His Highness stressed that the international community must redouble its efforts to attain a just and lasting peace for the Palestinian cause, noting that the entire world has now come to realize that the status quo is no longer viable and that occupation cannot be peaceful or civilized. He affirmed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, remains the only path to peace in Palestine, Israel, and the entire region. His Highness the Amir reiterated his welcome of the adoption of the "New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution." He also commended the growing wave of international recognition of the State of Palestine by more than 150 countries, noting that this reflects an international consensus in support of the establishment of the Palestinian state and its right to full membership in the United Nations. His Highness further emphasized that the Gaza Strip remains an integral part of the Palestinian territories and the State of Palestine. His Highness also condemned all unilateral measures that undermine the two-state solution and entrench annexation and settlement activity, including Israeli laws that seek to impose so-called "sovereignty" over the West Bank and plans for settlement expansion. He reiterated Qatar's strong condemnation of the repeated attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, stressing that any attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied East Jerusalem are null and void under international law and relevant United Nations resolutions. His Highness the Amir affirmed that Qatar remains firmly committed to providing various forms of political and humanitarian support to the brotherly Palestinian people and to highlighting their just cause. In this context, His Highness noted that following the signing of the peace agreement in Sharm El-Sheikh, Qatar swiftly moved to extend assistance to the people of the Gaza Strip, including support for the Gaza Municipality through the Qatari Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza to remove rubble and reopen streets, in addition to providing tens of thousands of shelter tents, as well as food and medical supplies. He added that Qatar will continue to fulfill its humanitarian and fraternal duty toward the Palestinian people through sustained humanitarian, relief, and development support, particularly in the Gaza Strip, which has endured a siege for seventeen years under severe Israeli restrictions on the movement of people and goods. His Highness expressed appreciation to the United Nations and its Secretary-General for the pivotal role and indispensable efforts exerted by the international organization, its agencies, and partners in providing support to the brotherly Palestinian people, including Palestinian refugees. He also commended the great sacrifices made by United Nations staff in the Gaza Strip, especially UNRWA. His Highness noted that Qatar has continued its financial contributions to the agency to support the pivotal role it plays in the international response to the Gaza crisis. His Highness concluded the message by expressing his appreciation to the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP), the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories (UNSCIIP), and the United Nations Division for Palestinian Rights, commending their efforts in highlighting the Palestinian cause and mobilizing international support for the rights of the Palestinian people.

At least $50mn for the freedom of a prominent person in the Middle East: that is the king's ransom paid weeks ago to militants linked to Al Qaeda who are pushing to topple the Malian government and impose religious law. Alongside a crippling fuel blockade, JNIM, has made kidnapping wealthy foreigners for a ransom a pillar of its strategy of "economic militancy". Its goal: oust the junta, which has struggled to contain Mali's decade-long insurgency since taking power following back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021, by scaring away investors and paralysing the west African country's economy.In June, the JNIM threatened to strike any foreign businesses and industries installed in Mali, as well as any enterprise doing business with the Malian government without its "authorisation". Since then the group — which hopes to cement its status as one of the most powerful of the militant factions to plague the region by expanding towards the Atlantic coast — has made good on its promise.It has attacked and burnt tankers carrying vital fuel to landlocked Mali from the coasts of Senegal or Ivory Coast, launched assaults on factories and mines alike — and kidnapped more foreigners than ever before. "Between May and October 2025, at least 22 foreign nationals have been abducted — roughly double the previous record of 13 in 2022," said Heni Nsaibia, Senior West Africa Analyst for the ACLED conflict monitor.Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Emiratis and Iranians are all among the victims, together with a Serbian, a Croat and a Bosniak, Nsaibia added. The JNIM demanded the $50mn ransom after kidnapping a prominent member of a Middle East royal family involved in the gold trade near the capital Bamako on September 26, according to a source close to the negotiations and another Malian security source.Two of his business partners, an Iranian and a Pakistani, were also abducted. A first sum of 400 mn CFA Francs (more than $700,000) was then sent to the militants in exchange for proof that the hostages were alive, the source close to the negotiations said.The JNIM then freed the trio at the end of October after a ransom of "$50mn at least", the source added. That sum "represents the highest known ransom in the region and constitutes a major financial boost for (the JNIM)", said Nsaibia. Who actually paid the ransom is unknown. But a Malian security source, who confirmed the exorbitant total, said JNIM also obtained "the release of around 30 of its prisoners" held by the Malian intelligence services. "Malian soldiers were also released during the same exchange. It is an astounding deal in terms of its scale and the elements involved, especially in the current context," the security source continued.For Rida Lyammouri, a researcher at the Policy Center for the New South, the ransom will allow the JNIM to "maintain its current level of military engagement, including the economic blockade on Bamako, for a prolonged period". "Such a haul will only serve to boost the JNIM's ambitions to expand and establish a lasting presence in the Sahel and the coastal states of Africa," Lyammouri added. Liam Karr, an analyst at the Washington-based American Enterprise Institute (AEI), pointed out that those "funds will help the group procure more weapons, such as commercial drones, explosives, and small arms, as well as pay salaries to fighters".The withdrawal of French troops in the wake of the coup has left a security vacuum exploited by the militants which the junta's new security partners — including Russia — have failed to fill, Lyammouri said. And the JNIM still holds several other hostages who, once ransomed, will swell its war chest even further.Most are abducted in the west of the country, where around 80% of Mali's gold production is mined, according to the Soufan Centre consultancy. At least 11 Chinese citizens have been abducted in western Mali in attacks on seven industrial sites, of which six were run by Chinese companies, according to the AEI think tank. And just several weeks ago, five Indians working for an electricity company and an Egyptian were kidnapped in the same region. "Targeting foreign nationals drives away foreign investment, undermining a key revenue stream for the Malian junta," notably in the mining sector, said Karr, the AEI analyst. With the JNIM's grip tightening, the US and the United Kingdom have announced that they are pulling out all non-essential personnel from Mali, while many embassies have urged their citizens to leave the country.

The US James Foley Foundation has awarded HE the Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh al-Khulaifi, the 2026 American “Hostage Freedom Award”. In a statement published on its official website, the Foundation stated that “His Excellency, in his capacity as Chief Negotiator, played a decisive role in securing the release of Americans held hostage in Afghanistan, Iran, Gaza, and Venezuela.”The Foundation noted that his expertise contributes to opening channels of dialogue when all other paths are blocked, building bridges of trust, and guiding negotiation tracks in the most challenging cases.The American Foundation confirmed that HE Dr al-Khulaifi succeeded in finding means of communication and humanitarian solutions in cases where the US lacked formal relations. It added, “His Excellency’s work embodies the role played by the State of Qatar as a trusted mediator and affirms the strength of diplomacy in serving peace and preserving human dignity.”

The State of Qatar has strongly condemned the Israeli occupation forces' interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, considering it a flagrant violation of international law and a threat to freedom of navigation and maritime security. In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to ensure the safety of all flotilla members and their immediate release. It also called for an urgent investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be brought to justice. The ministry reiterated the State of Qatar's call on the international community to assume its moral and legal responsibilities and firmly confront the Israeli occupation authorities' ongoing violations of international humanitarian law, and to ensure the safe, sustainable, and unhindered entry of humanitarian aid into all areas of the Gaza Strip.

Together, we will break the silence of the siege," the Global Sumud Flotilla wrote on social media.They intend to join the Global Sumud Flotilla which is also bound for Gaza carrying aid supplies.On board are elected officials from the European Parliament and from countries including Belgium, France, Ireland, Spain and the United States.Around 40 Italians are aboard the flotilla alongside activists from dozens of other countries, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg. They hope to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza in the coming week.Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Sunday repeated a proposal made last week for the flotilla to take the aid to Cyprus for eventual distribution in Gaza by the Roman Catholic Church. The flotilla rejected the suggestion."We have always said ... that it is dangerous to approach Israeli waters. We don't know what might happen. Forcing the blockade is dangerous," Tajani told reporters. The flotilla was struck on Wednesday in international waters off Crete by drones armed with stun grenades and irritants, which caused damage but no injuries.Israel did not comment on the incident. It has previously said it will use any means to prevent the boats from reaching Gaza, arguing that its naval blockade is legal as it battles Hamas militants in the coastal enclave.Italy and Spain have deployed navy ships close to the flotilla for rescue and humanitarian tasks.On Wednesday, the United Nations called for an investigation into alleged drone attacks off Greece against the Global Sumud Flotilla, which activists have blamed on Israel.

Malaysia has reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian people's struggle for peace, justice, freedom, and independence. In a statement carried by Bernama News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored Malaysia's strong opposition to the Israeli occupation and what it described as genocide in the Gaza Strip.The Ministry affirmed that Malaysia will continue to work constructively with the international community to advance peace and justice, provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians, and ultimately support the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.The statement further emphasized that justice and accountability are essential to achieving lasting peace.

South Korea, the United States and Japan launched their trilateral multi-domain exercise Monday, in what is seen as their continued efforts to deepen security cooperation. The five-day Freedom Edge exercise got under way in international waters east and south of South Korea's southern island of Jeju from Sept. 15–19, according to the South Korean military. The ongoing exercise is the third round of the trilateral drills, following previous rounds of the exercise conducted in June and November last year, respectively.It is the first such exercise to be held since President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump took office. The Korean military earlier said the three countries will aim to enhance their interoperability to maintain a "solid and stable" trilateral cooperation through the exercise, according to (Yonhap) news agency. The US Indo-Pacific Command said the exercise "demonstrates the countries' shared commitment to collectively achieve and maintain peace in the Asia-Pacific."The exercise will feature training aimed at sharpening ballistic missile defense capabilities, as well as air defense exercises, medical evacuation training and maritime interdiction operation training, it said.
