AstraZeneca investors balk at $400bn Bristol Myers tie-up reports

AstraZeneca investors punished the drugmaker on Monday over reports of merger talks with US rival Bristol Myers Squibb about forming what would become one of the world's biggest pharmaceutical firms with a combined value of nearly $400bn.Shares in AstraZeneca were down some 6%, the second-biggest drop on the FTSE 100 index, as investors and analysts said Britain's biggest drugmaker had little need for a transformative acquisition despite potential cost benefits. Bristol Myers shares were up about 5% in US pre-market trading.A potential deal, as yet unconfirmed by either firm, would create the world's fourth-largest drugmaker by market capitalisation and the largest by revenue, in potentially one of the biggest M&A deals ever, combining a top European pharmaceutical firm with a major US rival."The only advantage for AstraZeneca in this rumoured combination with BMS seems to be to accelerate its US footprint and sales," said Lucy Coutts, investment director at JM Finn, an AstraZeneca shareholder."On balance, BMS shareholders would be the winners of any combination with AZN and so this news will undoubtedly be received coolly by AZN shareholders."A person familiar with the matter told Reuters that AstraZeneca and Bristol had held talks, confirming an earlier Financial Times report. On Friday, the two had a combined market capitalisation of nearly $400bn, with AstraZeneca valued at $264bn and Bristol Myers at $133bn.An AstraZeneca spokesperson declined to comment on Monday. Bristol Myers, which is headquartered in New Jersey, did not respond to a request for comment on Sunday.Analysts and investors questioned the logic of a deal for AstraZeneca, which has been one of the most successful companies in the sector under CEO Pascal Soriot's 14 years at the helm.Markus Manns, portfolio manager at Union Investment, an AstraZeneca shareholder, said a deal "does not make strategic or financial sense" and that it would disrupt a "well-run company with a full pipeline.""If the merger rumours prove to be true, this would represent the pharmaceutical industry's equivalent of the FIFA privatisation moment," added Manns, referring to FIFA's now abandoned plans to sell off a World Cup stake. "(That is to say a) poorly conceived proposal that would be met with considerable bewilderment by many market participants."Lukas Leu, portfolio manager at AstraZeneca shareholder ATG Healthcare, said a deal could boost margins through cost synergies and expand reach in neuroscience and cell therapy, but questioned how a combined firm would position competing drugs."I am not a big fan of mega-mergers, it kills innovation and agility, and would be growth-dilutive for AstraZeneca in the near term," he said.One attraction for AstraZeneca could be further expanding its presence in the United States, already its biggest market.AstraZeneca this year completed a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange, and a Bristol Myers deal would effectively mean a British company buying a major US pharmaceutical champion.Bristol Myers derives the majority of its revenue from the US, where it has one of the largest commercial footprints.A portfolio manager at a top-20 AstraZeneca shareholder, who commented on condition of anonymity, said that while "there may be an appeal to increasing US exposure", such a deal "would be a surprise given Astra management has consistently backed the business to grow organically through R&D delivery"."Consensus is that Astra has a stronger pipeline and less patent expiry pressure than BMS, so why dilute that and reduce the growth outlook?"Since President Donald Trump returned to office, AstraZeneca has invested tens of billions of dollars in US manufacturing and cultivated close ties with the administration as the company pursues an ambitious goal of generating half of its targeted $80bn in annual revenue by 2030 from the US market.It generated about $59bn in revenue last year.Sean Conroy, an analyst at Shore Capital, said a deal could also help AstraZeneca address the patent cliff it faces after 2030 and strengthen its oncology business, although he cautioned that investors were "not often fans of mega mergers of this ilk".He added that overlap between Bristol Myers' Opdivo and AstraZeneca's Imfinzi, which are the same type of cancer immunotherapy drugs, could attract antitrust scrutiny.

The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) declined by 111.79 points or 1.1% to 9,920.69 vs. the previous week. Market capitalisation declined by 1.3% to QR594.2bn from QR601.9bn at the end of the previous trading week. Of the 54 companies traded, 15 ended higher, one unchanged, while 38 ended lower. Gulf Warehousing Co (GWCS) was the best performing stock for the week, rising 4.4%. Meanwhile, Dlala (DBIS) was the worst performing stock for the week, decreasing 10.9%. Ooredoo (ORDS), Industries Qatar (IQCD) and Dukhan Bank (DUBK) were the main contributors to the weekly index decline, shaving off 52.08, 47.57 and 19.80 points from the index, respectively. Traded value during the week declined 8.9% to QR1,563.1mn vs. QR1,716.3mn in the prior trading week. QNBK was the top value stock traded during the week with total traded value of QR160.8mn.Traded volume climbed up 1.9% to 654.8mn shares compared with 642.8mn shares in the prior trading week. The number of transactions dropped by 24.3% to 126,679 vs. 167,271 in the prior week. Mazaya (MRDS) was the top volume stock traded during the week with total traded volume of 77.3mn shares. Foreign institutions remained bearish, ending the week with net selling of QR86.6mn vs. net selling of QR65.6mn in the prior week. Qatari institutions remained bullish with net buying of QR40.0mn vs. net buying of QR54.7mn in the week before. Foreign retail investors ended the week with net buying of QR13.1mn vs. net buying of QR1.3mn in the prior week. Qatari retail investors ended the week with net buying of QR33.5mn vs. net buying of QR9.6mn. Global foreign institutions remained net sellers of Qatari equities by $101.5mn YTD, while GCC institutions remained net sellers by $23.2mn.**media[474647]**The Index closed -1.1% for the week and printed 9,920.69. The index has been in a down-leg for the past few months and breached the 10,000 psychological level. This indicates the index can witness further profit-booking and test the 9,700 level, followed by 9,400. The 10,000 level may act as a stiff resistance going ahead.

Ahlibank reports QR407mn net profit for H1

India's Reliance profit beats estimate on resilient oil business

Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries reported better-than-expected quarterly profit on Friday, helped by a steady performance across its core oil-to-chemicals arm and consumer-facing divisions.The retail-to-refining giant led by billionaire tycoon Mukesh Ambani is India's most valuable company by market capitalisation.It said net profit attributable to owners of the company came in at 209.46bn rupees ($2.17bn) for the April-June quarter, down more than 22% from the same period last year.This beat the average analyst estimate of 198.23bn rupees.The drop in profit was expected as the bottomline in the same quarter last year was drastically boosted by a one-off gain from the sale of a key investment.Revenue from operations meanwhile rose over 25% year-on-year to hit 3.11tn rupees.However, that was accompanied by a nearly 31% jump in the "cost of materials consumed".Despite having aggressively expanded into telecoms and green energy over the last decade, Reliance still depends on its traditional oil business for profits.The conglomerate owns and operates the world's largest refinery complex in the Indian state of Gujarat.This business has faced multiple headwinds from the Mideast conflict, but a Reliance statement said it was able to weather the storm through "crude basket diversification, efficient product placement in deficit markets and favourable ethane cracking economics".Chairman Ambani added that the oil-to-chemicals unit delivered a "strong performance", helped by "all-time high" refining margins."This was achieved despite a challenging global energy market backdrop with disrupted supply chains," he said in a statement.Reliance's consumer-facing businesses also helped prop up its overall June quarter performance.The company's telecoms arm, which is set for its own IPO later this year, saw its average revenue per user rise 3.3% year-on-year.The company said the slight uptick was due to a "better subscriber mix" and came despite several discount schemes that were rolled out for fixed broadband customers.The retail unit meanwhile posted a 7.4% on-year rise in gross revenue, driven by growth across grocery, fashion and consumer electronics verticals.But margins dropped slightly as the conglomerate invests in infrastructure for its quick commerce push.Reliance Industries shares have fallen more than 15% this year, underperforming the benchmark Nifty index.

QSE index surges 327 points; M-cap adds QR20bn

Strong expectations of the US-Iran peace deal Sunday gave a substantial lift to the Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE), leading its key index surge 327 points and capitalisation add QR20bn.An across the board buying lifted the 20-stock Qatar Index 3.15% to 10,706.7 points, although it opened at a low of 10,381 points. The market narrowed its year-to-date losses to mere 0.52%.About 91% of the traded constituents extended gains to investors in the main bourse, whose capitalisation added QR19.74bn or 3.18% to QR640.49bn, mainly owing to large and midcap segments.The transport, real estate, banking and industrials counters witnessed higher than average demand in the main market, whose trade turnover and volumes were on the rise.The domestic institutions were seen net buyers in the main bourse, which saw as many as 0.1mn exchange traded funds (sponsored by AlRayan Bank and Doha Bank) valued at QR0.27mn trade across 44 deals.The Gulf retail investors turned bullish in the main market, which saw no trading of sovereign bonds.The Islamic index was seen gaining slower than the other indices of the main bourse, which saw no trading of sovereign sukuks.The Total Return Index shot up 3.15%, the All Share Index by 3.1% and the Al Rayan Islamic Index by 3.01% in the main bourse, which saw no trading of treasury bills.The transport sector index surged 4.13%, realty (3.58%), banks and financial services (3.55%), industrials (3.38%), consumer goods and services (0.97%) and insurance (0.67%).As many as 49 gained, while only two declined and three were unchanged in the main market.Major movers in the main market included Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding, Qatar Cinema and Film Distribution, Barwa, Milaha, QNB, Qatar Islamic Bank, Doha Bank, Baladna, Industries Qatar, Gulf International Services, Qamco, Ezdan and Nakilat. In the juniour bourse, Techno Q saw its shares appreciate in value.Nevertheless, Al Mahhar Holding and Qatar Islamic Insurance were the two lone shakers in the main market.The foreign institutions turned net buyers to the tune of QR57.97mn against net sellers of QR18.6mn last Thursday.The domestic institutions were net buyers to the extent of QR26.68mn compared with net sellers of QR8.2mn on May 21.The Gulf individuals turned net buyers to the tune of QR1.64mn against net profit takers of QR0.06mn the previous trading day.However, the local retail investors were net sellers to the extent of QR57.36mn compared with net buyers of QR21.04mn last Thursday.The Arab individual investors’ net profit booking grew substantially to QR21.6mn against QR0.75mn on May 21.The foreign individuals turned net sellers to the tune of QR7.9mn compared with net buyers of QR5.52mn the previous trading day.The Gulf institutions’ net buying weakened marginally to QR0.58mn against QR1.06mn last Thursday.The Arab institutions had no major net exposure for the third straight session.The main market saw 73% surge in trade volumes to 221.86mn shares, 45% in value to QR533.42mn and 21% in deals to 25,889.In the venture market, a total of 0.13mn equities valued at QR0.28mn changed hands across 30 transactions.
