The Qatar Photography Festival (Tasweer) will mark World Photography Day on August 19 with an evening celebrating creativity, recognising outstanding visual works and highlighting opportunities for emerging photographers in Qatar.  The celebrations will culminate with “Together in Photography: World Photography Day”, organised by Tasweer in collaboration with the Fire Station at the Fire Station Cinema from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.  The event will bring together photographers, artists, and members of the public for an evening exploring photography’s role in preserving memory and shaping contemporary visual narratives.  A highlight will be the announcement of the winners of the 2026 Tasweer Awards for photographic projects and individual photographs, recognising outstanding works selected from this year’s submissions.  The ceremony will also be streamed live across Tasweer’s digital platforms, enabling audiences beyond Qatar to follow the celebrations.  Beyond the World Photography Day programme, Tasweer continues to strengthen its support for contemporary photographic practice through its 2026-27 Artist in Residency Programme, with applications for its second edition open until September 3.  The five-month residency will take place at Bait Al Wakra Studios in Al Wakra and will target photographers and visual storytellers aged 21 and above residing in Qatar.  Three artists will be selected, each receiving a private studio, a monthly stipend of QR4,000, and professional mentorship and training from experienced photographers.  The programme invites participants to develop projects examining the relationships between people, cultures, memory and the environment, both within Qatar and beyond.  It welcomes a broad range of approaches, including documentary, experimental and conceptual photography.  The residency will culminate in the exhibition “When the Image Unfolds – The Language of Impact”, presented as part of the 2027 Tasweer Festival.A digital magazine will also document the participants’ creative journeys and showcase the outcomes of their artistic exploration. Tasweer director Khalifa al-Obaidli stressed the enduring importance of photography in contemporary life.  “Photography has become an integral part of our daily lives. Images remain among the most powerful ways of preserving the details of time and place in our collective memory,” he said.  Al-Obaidli added that the residency offers photographers a dedicated creative environment where they can develop their ideas with expert guidance and transform artistic concepts into completed projects, while drawing inspiration from Al Wakra’s distinctive cultural landscape and heritage. 

Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar has opened applications for the 2026-27 Tasweer Residency, inviting photographers and visual storytellers aged 21 and above who are based in Qatar to apply for the program's second edition.Applications will be accepted from July 21 to September 3 for the five-month residency, which will be held at Bayt Al Wakrah in the historic Old Al Wakrah City.The program will support each resident's artistic development and culminate in the exhibition "As the Image Unfolds -- The Language of Athar" during the 2027 Tasweer Festival. An online zine documenting participants' creative processes and the outcomes of their collective journey will also accompany the exhibition.The Tasweer Residency encourages a broad range of photographic approaches, including documentary, conceptual and experimental image-making. Applicants are invited to propose projects offering thoughtful and authentic perspectives on the connections between people, culture, memory and the environment in Qatar and beyond.The residency is built around the concept of "athar" -- an Arabic word meaning traces, imprints and legacies. It presents photography as both a record of the present and a means of reimagining it through light, memory and the space between what is visible and what remains unseen.Khalifa Al Obaidly, Director of Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar, said: "Photography has become an essential part of our daily lives, and we rely on images to enhance our memory of place and time. The Tasweer Residency provides photographers with a creative space, support, and guidance from experts, helping them turn their artistic imagination into a tangible reality during their residency amidst the inspiring scenery of Old Al Wakrah City."Three selected residents will each receive a dedicated studio space, a monthly stipend of QR 4,000 and comprehensive mentorship from photography experts.The program emphasizes experimentation, critical dialogue, and community engagement, guiding participants from research to realization.Building on the success of its inaugural edition in 2025, the residency will continue to offer production and curatorial support, access to local cultural institutions and professional networks, and opportunities for public engagement. 

A selection of photographs from the "After the Game" exhibition, first shown at the Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar, has been included in a new exhibition in Mexico City exploring the legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.The works form part of "Journeys to Greatness: Qatar 2022 Legacy", presented by the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum in partnership with Mexico's Ministry of Culture through the Centro de Cultura Digital (CCD).The exhibition links the legacy of Qatar 2022 with the next World Cup in Canada and Mexico in 2026 and is part of the Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture programme.It uses photography, objects and multimedia storytelling to present football as a shared cultural experience, bringing together players, fans and communities from around the world.The selected images, originally shown in the third edition of the Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar, are integrated across sections of the exhibition including “Look of the Game”, “Matches and Players”, and “Unity in Diversity”, highlighting human stories behind the tournament.3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum director Abdulla al-Mulla said the legacy of Qatar 2022 extended beyond players and matches to include fans whose experiences helped define the tournament.He said the exhibition demonstrated how those memories continued to connect people across borders, adding that visitors had engaged with Qatari and Gulf customs and traditions.Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar director Khalifa al-Obaidli said photography has a unique ability to preserve emotion, noting that the works captured shared human experiences that made Qatar 2022 a transformative milestone.The original "After the Game" exhibition was created for the 2025 edition of Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar and explored the tournament's legacy through photographers documenting moments of celebration, reflection and connection.The "Journeys to Greatness" exhibition is an interactive multimedia presentation of the World Cup as a defining moment for Qatar and the wider region.It runs at the Centro de Cultura Digital in Mexico City until August 9 as part of a wider cultural programme symbolically linking Qatar 2022 with Mexico 2026.
