The Katara International Ramadan Open Classical Chess Championship is set to begin today at Building 15, bringing together 86 male and female players from various age groups.The tournament is organised by the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) and will continue until March 1.The first round of the nine-round classical chess competition, played under the Swiss system (45 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move), will feature several players ranked on the International Chess Federation (FIDE) list.QCA president Mohammed al-Mudahka expressed his pleasure at the continuation of the championship, describing it as one of the most prominent events on the federation’s annual calendar.In a statement to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), he noted that the organising committee has completed all preparations for the start of the competition.He highlighted the tournament's importance in providing participants with valuable experience, particularly given the large number of rated players competing in the international event.Al-Mudahka thanked Katara Cultural Village for its efforts in ensuring the continuity of the tournament.He emphasised the federation’s commitment to such partnerships and its keenness to institutionalise these championships within the annual calendar to further develop the skills of national team players and strengthen their presence in upcoming competitions.The total prize fund amounts to QR25,000, with QR5,000 awarded to the first-place winner.Prizes will also be given to the top 10 finishers, as well as special awards for the best Qatari players across several age categories, in addition to prizes designated for players from the Qatar Chess Association Training Centre.The Katara Classical Chess Championship is considered one of the federation’s most prominent annual events.It is held each year during the Holy Month of Ramadan and has provided significant support to national teams across all age categories. 

Under the slogan "I Chose Sport," the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) organized a comprehensive series of activities and events to celebrate the country’s National Sport Day. The events were held in accordance with Emiri Decree No. (80) of 2011, which designates the second Tuesday of February each year as a national day for sport. In a bid to ensure broad community engagement, QCA strategically distributed its activities across several key locations, including Museum Park, the Student Building at Qatar Foundation, Oxygen Park, Aspire Park, Old Doha Port, and Stadium 974.**media[415423]**These events were organized in close cooperation with the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Police Sports Federation, the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, and Aspire Academy. The day witnessed significant participation from federation officials, players, and the general public, continuing an annual tradition aimed at integrating sport into daily life. Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of QCA, praised the "exceptional atmosphere" that characterized the day. He noted that the large turnout reflected widespread public engagement with the holiday's objectives. "The Qatar Chess Association, in cooperation with state institutions, ensured a geographical distribution of events to cover different areas across the country," al-Mudahka said. "This strategy aimed to encourage broad participation from all members of society and to further promote chess culture." Al-Mudahka emphasized that this year’s slogan, "I Chose Sport," underscores the necessity of regular physical activity and carries implications that go beyond a single day of celebration. He further affirmed the Federation's commitment to organizing tournaments throughout the year for all age groups. Echoing these sentiments, Hamad al-Tamimi, Executive Director of QCAn, highlighted the impact of the events on the next generation. "These events contribute effectively to spreading the game of chess and expanding the base of practitioners within Qatari society, especially among the youth," al-Tamimi said. He added that the tournaments were distinctive, featuring confrontations "full of strength and challenge" between participating players. QCA expressed its gratitude to all partner institutions for their ongoing support in making the National Sport Day activities a success.

FIDE has announced that Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of Qatar Chess Association (QCA) will oversee the next edition of the World Chess Olympiad to be held in September in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.Al Mudahka's appointment to oversee the World Olympiad comes in recognition of his efforts in supporting and developing chess internationally and the remarkable success of the World Championship hosted by Qatar in December.Samarkand will host the 46th Chess Olympiad from September 10 to 24, 2026. The city is currently undergoing intensive preparations to host the major event.Mohammed al-Mudahka expressed his pleasure at his appointment for one of the most important chess events in the world, expressing his gratitude for the great trust placed in him by the global chess community.The QCA president, who also serves as the Director of International Relations at FIDE, commended the significant work being done by FIDE, under the leadership of Arkady Dvorkovich, to elevate the game at all levels, develop FIDE competitions, and expand the game's reach in developing countries.Al-Mudahka explained that the upcoming strategy aims to continue advancing chess in Asia, and that Uzbekistan's hosting of the World Chess Olympiad is part of its efforts to support the global chess movement.He also announced the Qatari national team's participation in the upcoming Olympiad, noting that Qatar's presence in such major tournaments is crucial in every respect. He emphasized the association’s commitment to participating in the World Chess Olympiad to raise the level of its players.Al-Mudahka stressed that chess is a global game that encourages integrity, inclusion, and mutual respect, and contributes to fostering an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples and nations. 

Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) and Director of International Relations at the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Thursday said Qatar ‘enjoys and savours’ the strong relationship between the Qatar Chess Association and world governing body FIDE. Al-Mudahka expressed his delight at the high level of participation of top players at this week’s €1mn FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships, noting that the Dec 26-30 tournament is set to attract global audience of millions. “Qatar’s best players will participate in the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships. Playing in this championship is of paramount importance for Qatar’s young talent for their overall rankings. It is also important to gain in experience by competing against or watching the world’s best players from close quarters,” al-Mudahka said during a press conference Thursday. The QCA president concluded his remarks by thanking the Ministry of Sports and Youth for its ‘significant support and assistance’ to the Federation since Doha won the hosting rights of the six-day FIDE championships. Al-Mudahka said that the government’s support will contribute to the development and expansion of chess in Qatar, and affirmed the QCA’s continued efforts to elevate Qatari chess to a prominent position in the region. Arkady Dvorkovich, the FIDE President, said Thursday: “The World Rapid & Blitz Championships, organised by FIDE, are among the most exciting and watched chess events of the year. I would like to thank the local organising committee for their tireless efforts in making it a fantastic event.” He added: “Qatar has a successful track record in organising major chess tournaments, such as the Qatar Masters and possesses global expertise in organising major sporting events as we saw with the FIFA World Cup in 2022.” The FIDE president said around 400 players will be playing for a prize pool of approximately €1mn. “I expect a highly competitive tournament this week. I think we can truly describe the event here as a true chess festival,” Dvorkovich said. He expressed his delight at the large number of outstanding players competing in both the men’s and women’s events. “The QCA have done remarkable well and I thank them for their tireless efforts in making it a resounding success,” Dvorkovich said Thursday.
