Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) has been named a bronze winner of the 2026 MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) Merit Awards in the Student Success category.The MENASA Area of NASPA was established to foster engagement and collaboration among student affairs professionals and to strengthen services to students and campuses through a range of resources and activities.The awards cover five categories critical to student success and the continued growth of the student affairs profession: Student Success, Collaborative Partnerships, Innovative Practices, Research, and Dedicated Professional (Commitment to the MENASA Area).Titled “From Aspiration to Identity: Building Tomorrow’s Physicians Through Mentorships,” WCM-Q’s award-winning submission focused on its Alumni Student Mentorship Programme, an innovative pre-medical division initiative designed to support the professional identity development of foundation and pre-medical students. It was established in 2024 by Dr Rachid Bendriss, associate dean for foundation, student outreach and educational development programmes at WCM-Q, and is coordinated by Dina Bamieh, student programmes specialist at WCM-Q.The programme connects new students with alumni mentors representing a wide range of specialties and experiences in Qatar and internationally. It provides early exposure to career pathways, fosters professionalism in medical education, and supports students in developing their professional identity.Commenting on her experience, pre-med 1 student Noof AlMalik said: “The mentorship programme has been a staple in my journey at WCM-Q ever since I started my foundation year in 2024. While I was somewhat hesitant to become a mentee early on, it became one of the most influential aspects of my educational journey.”WCM-Q alumna Dr Ghadeer Abdelwahab, a resident in emergency medicine at Hamad General Hospital, said: “I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible programme and to mentor such talented students. The mentees have impressed me with their professionalism, initiative and eagerness to learn. Their dedication and enthusiasm for medicine have been both inspiring and a powerful reminder of why I chose this career.”Dr Bendriss said: “We are truly honoured to receive this recognition, which reflects our commitment to supporting students from the start of their academic journey and helping them build their professional identity and excel in higher education. I sincerely thank our dedicated alumni mentors, whose contributions have been central to the programme’s success.” 

The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has been awarded the MENASA NASPA Silver Award for Innovative Practices in recognition of its Student Mental Health Ambassadors (SMHA) program, reaffirming the University's commitment to student wellbeing, peer support, and creating a psychologically safe and inclusive campus environment.The award was presented by NASPA MENASA, the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia regional network of NASPA, which recognizes excellence and innovation in student affairs and higher education initiatives across the region.The distinction highlights UDST's innovative and impactful approach to student mental wellbeing and positions the Student Mental Health Ambassadors program as a leading peer-support initiative within higher education institutions across the MENASA region. The Student Mental Health Ambassadors work closely with Student Counselling and Accessibility Services to promote mental wellbeing awareness and encourage students to seek support through peer-led engagement and outreach initiatives. The program reflects UDST's continued efforts to strengthen student support systems and foster a campus culture built on empathy, connection, and wellbeing.Nicole Penney, Manager of Student Counselling and Accessibility Services at UDST, said: "Receiving the MENASA Merit in Innovative Practices Silver Award is a proud milestone for our team and a testament to the impact of the Student Mental Health Ambassador Program. This recognition reflects our commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive campus environment where student wellbeing is prioritized."

Art Basel opened its first-ever fair in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (Menasa), marking a significant new chapter in its global evolution and for the international art market.Art Basel Qatar, presented in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, takes place across Msheireb Downtown Doha and runs through February 7. The inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar brings together 87 international exhibitors, presenting the work of 84 artists – more than half of whom hail from across the Menasa region. Taking place across M7 and the Doha Design District in Msheireb Downtown Doha, the fair is structured around solo artist presentations rather than a traditional booth model, offering a more open and focused way to experience the work on view. Under the artistic leadership of Vincenzo de Bellis, Art Basel’s Chief Artistic Officer and Global Director of Fairs, and Wael Shawky, Artistic Director of the inaugural edition, the fair is shaped by the theme Becoming, reflecting a format designed to encourage deeper engagement and to grow in dialogue with its context over time. On the eve of the fair’s first VIP Preview Day, Art Basel and Visit Qatar, the fair’s Lead Partner, celebrated by unveiling SONG, a new site-responsive work by Jenny Holzer and the tenth work in the fair’s Special Projects programme, at a welcome event at Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art (MIA). The work activated the museum through two simultaneous projections across the main facade and inner courtyard, accompanied by a single, choreographed performance of over 700 drones in the night sky. Using poems by Mahmoud Darwish, the celebrated Palestinian poet whose lyrical voice has profoundly shaped modern Arabic literature, and Nujoom Alghanem, the acclaimed Emirati poet and filmmaker known for her intimate and incisive writing, Holzer brings Arabic and English text into public space as illumination, rhythm, and interruption. Following its debut, the work remains on view to the public nightly as a projection on the museum’s main facade throughout the fair. Representing a defining moment in Art Basel’s 55-year history, the new fair responds to Qatar’s long-standing investment in culture by establishing a platform that connects the region’s burgeoning artistic production with Art Basel’s global network, nurturing long-term growth and exchange across the art market. Art Basel Qatar takes place from February 5-7, with preview days on February 3 and 4. In a statement, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, said: “Today marks a special moment — one that connects talent and industry, by welcoming the establishment of Art Basel in the Middle East. This is the beginning of a bold, exciting, and truly unique undertaking — one that merges with and amplifies the cultural and artistic ecosystem we have been building, piece by piece, for the past fifty years. “We are here not just to present yet another art fair, but to curate a platform that uplifts the creativity of an entire region, remaining deeply human-centred and humane, and inviting the world to be curious about who we really are, and engage in meaningful conversations.”
