Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah will be bidding for a record-breaking 19th victory from 26 starts when this weekend’s Qatar International Rally gets underway from the Lusail Sports Complex Thursday afternoon. The in-form Qatari began his challenge for an unprecedented 21st FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) title with victory in Oman two weeks ago and has now switched his attention to securing a staggering 93rd career MERC rally win on the three-day event being hosted by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF). Al-Attiyah and co-driver Candido Carrera top a 23-car field with strength in depth and will be looking to start their weekend’s campaign with a strategic performance on the new Qualifying Stage Thursday. This will determine the starting order for Friday’s opening special stage. The outcome of the Qualifying Stage will be the deciding factor to which of the Rally2 crews opens the road, acts as a road sweeper and faces the slight disadvantage of clearing loose sand and gravel off the racing line. In the past, the leader of the championship has opened the road regardless and al-Attiyah may well be able to take advantage of the new addition to the regulations to strengthen his challenge in an Autotek Skoda Fabia RS. Abdullah al-Rawahi is back from serious injury and pushed al-Attiyah hard in his native Oman last month. Punctures ultimately dropped him to second place and out of victory contention, but the Omani is better prepared for this rally and is hopeful that he has a good set-up on his Skoda Fabia RS to apply the pressure on al-Attiyah from the outset. The former regional champion teams up with Jordanian co-driver Ata al-Hmoud. Local driver Abdulaziz al-Kuwari was not present at the opening round but stayed in match fitness with a strong performance at last weekend’s Saudi Baja. He teams up with his brother Nasser in a Skoda Fabia RS and will be striving for the podium on a rally he won in 2012. This will only be the third special stage rally in Hamza Bakhashab’s short career but the Saudi showed in Oman that he has the pace to reach the podium. He admitted at the press conference on Tuesday evening that working efficiently with accurate pace notes had cost him dearly at the opening round when he crashed out of third place, but he and Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore are determined to come back even stronger this weekend in their Jameel Motorsport Toyota GR Yaris Rally2. Engine issues sidelined Mohammed al-Marri in Oman but the QMMF-backed driver has switched to a Citroën C3 this weekend and will make his debut in the Rally2 class with Frenchman Pierre Delorme reading his pace notes. Veteran Nasser Khalifa al-Atya began his 2026 campaign with a podium finish in Oman, as he tries to retain the FIA Master Driver trophy he won last season. The Qatari again teams up with Lebanese co-driver Ziad Chebab in a Motortune-run Ford Fiesta. Jweihan aims to extend his FIA MERC2 advantageShaker Jweihan was the class of the MERC2 field at round one with his fellow Jordanian co-driver Mustafa Juma and the youngster is determined to maintain the momentum in Qatar. “We have made a strong start to the season and, yes, the goal is to keep it going and push for another win,” said the Mitsubishi driver. His closest rivals in Oman were the Kuwaiti duo of Jassim al-Muqahwi and Sulaiman al-Helal, who finished fifth overall and picked up points for second in MERC2. Jordan’s Sami Fleifel was third and he teams up with Yazan Juma to continue his push for MERC2 honours. A cruel retirement cost Oman’s Zakariya al-Aamri (Subaru) valuable points on round one but he will be hoping to be in the mix with navigator Mohammed al-Mazrui on Qatar’s abrasive gravel terrain. Further MERC2 competition comes from the Indian duo of Mohamed Mansoor Parol and Lenin Joseph and Lebanon’s Charbel Chebly and Carlos Hanna in a pair of Mitsubishis. Rashid al-Muhannadi and Gary McElhinney are the defending FIA MERC4 champions, but their title defence ground to a halt with engine issues in Oman. The QMMF-backed Qatari will be looking to bounce back strongly with a category win this weekend, although he faces strong competition from a quartet of Qatari drivers in similar Peugeot 208 Rally4s and the Indian duo of Payyaakkal Panikkaveettil and Musa Sherif in a Ford Fiesta. The QMMF has offered support to Ahmed al-Kuwari, Nouef al-Sowaidi, Khalifa Saleh al-Attiyah and Ahmad Shaheen al-Muhannadi to boost the flagship two-wheel drive category. They have teamed up with their respective co-drivers, Baptiste Cerrato, Aisvydas Paliukenas, Laos Savvas and Taha al-Zadjali. The Lebanese pairing of Shadi El Fakih and Joseph Kmeid wheel out their Rally5 Renault Clio at the rear of the field behind four SSVs that are also eligible for the regional rally championship. Mohammed al-Atteya and Mirko Carrara drive a pair of Can-Ams and Christiano Gabbarrini and Mario Marotta wheel out two Yamaha YXZ 1000Rs built by Quaddy Racing. Thursday’s competitive timetable opens with a 75-minute practice session through a new 5.56km special for Rally2 cars at Al Khor from 10.00hrs. This will also act as the new qualifying stage for Rally2 crews, starting at 11.45hrs. The result of that will determine the starting order for leg one. The slowest driver in the qualifying stage will run as the first Rally2 entrant on the road Friday. Non-Rally2 machines will be permitted a maximum of two passes apiece during a shakedown on the Al Khor stage from 12.30hrs until 14.15hrs. The ceremonial start will then take centre stage adjacent to the service park in the grounds of the Lusail Sports Complex. 

Amid widespread acclaim for Doha’s cultural contributions, Egypt’s Minister of Culture Dr Ahmed Fouad Hanno officially handed over the ‘Guest of Honour’ mantle for the 58th Cairo International Book Fair (2027) to Qatar’s ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulrahman bin Mohammed al-Thani. The ceremony took place during the closing events of the 57th edition of the fair, which launched on January 21 under the theme “One who stops reading for an hour falls centuries behind.” This year’s edition featured Romania as the ‘Guest of Honour’ and saw a distinguished participation from the Qatari Ministry of Culture alongside several Qatari publishing houses. In this context, Director of the Libraries Department at the Ministry of Culture and Director of the Doha International Book Fair Jassim Ahmed al-Buainain confirmed to Qatar News Agency (QNA) the ministry’s full readiness for the upcoming role. He emphasised that the Cairo International Book Fair remains one of the Arab world’s premier events in terms of international participation, publishing volume, and its prestigious cultural programme. Al-Buainain noted that the 58th edition is set to be exceptional, adding that Qatar’s robust presence in the current session reflects ongoing efforts to bolster the nation’s footprint on regional and global cultural stages, raise awareness of its heritage, and highlight Doha’s growing contributions to the global cultural movement. Director-General of Qatar’s Dar Al Kutub and First Vice-President of the Arab Publishers Association Ibrahim al-Bohashem al-Sayed described the designation as a “crowning achievement” for Qatar’s consistent and distinguished involvement in the fair. He highlighted Cairo’s fair as one of the oldest and largest in the world, maintaining its prestige since its inception in 1969 as part of the elite circuit of Arab fairs, alongside Beirut (1951), Baghdad (1957), and Doha (1972). He assured that preparations for Cairo 2027 would receive full support to match Qatar’s cultural standing and to strengthen bridges of co-operation with Egypt. He expressed confidence that the Guest of Honour showcase would be extraordinary, reflecting the evolution and diversity of Qatar’s cultural scene. He further lauded the significant support provided by the Ministry of Culture, led by His Excellency the Minister of Culture Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad al-Thani, which has facilitated a qualitative leap in Qatar’s participation over the last three years in terms of pavilion quality and accompanying events. President of the Arab Publishers Association Mohamed Rashad also praised the selection, noting that Qatar’s pavilion this year offered an impressive display of the nation’s literature and intellectual thought. He pointed out that the Qatari writers and intellectuals present demonstrated high professionalism, effectively articulating Doha’s cultural mission. Rashad highlighted the growing interest in Qatari participation, marked by an increase in the number of participating publishing houses this year. He also commended Qatar’s influential role within the Arab Publishers Association, specifically noting the re-election of Ibrahim al-Bohashem al-Sayed as first vice-president and the election of Dr Aisha Jassim al-Kuwari (CEO of Roza Publishing) to the board of directors and as chair of the Arab Relations Committee. These milestones, he concluded, reflect the commitment of Qatari publishers to playing a dynamic and proactive role on both the Arab and international stages.

Under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Katara International Arabian Horse Festival will begin Wednesday at Katara Cultural Village. Against a backdrop of striking cityscapes and the beautiful Katara shoreline, the event will honour the grace, power, and timeless tradition of the Arabian horse. With a total prize fund of $1,050,000, the Doha stage stands amongst the most prestigious events of the season. The Katara Cultural Village Foundation announced the sponsors of the festival during a press conference held Monday, attended by Professor Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, Director General of the Foundation and Chairman of the Festival Organising Committee. In his address, Dr al-Sulaiti said the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani reflects the esteemed position of the Arabian horse in Qatari and Arab culture as a symbol of identity and authentic heritage. He noted that the sixth edition of the festival continues a sustained journey of development, adding that the event has evolved beyond a seasonal occasion to become a firmly established fixture on the Arabian horse calendar. He highlighted that six years of continuous progress have been reflected in growing attendance and rising confidence among breeders, owners, and enthusiasts from Qatar and abroad. This position, he stressed, is the result of a clear vision and cumulative effort built on discipline and consistency. Dr al-Sulaiti revealed that the 2026 edition features 545 horses registered across two championships – the Arabian Horse Tour and the Arabian Peninsula Purebred Championship. He explained that the diversity of bloodlines and artistic characteristics across both championships adds depth and balance to the festival, reinforcing the Arabian horse as a living cultural value rather than a relic of the past. Tournament Director and Organising Committee member Bader Mohammed al-Darwish said the achievements of the sixth edition reflect a clear strategic vision to strengthen the festival’s global standing and enhance the international presence of Arabian horses. He confirmed that the Arabian Horse Tour – Doha returns for the second consecutive year as the centrepiece of the festival, with more than 200 horses competing for qualification towards the World Arabian Horse Championship Supreme title. Al-Darwish noted that the Doha leg holds particular significance within the global tour, given its historical association with Arabian horses and traditional horsemanship. He added that the Doha round follows the season opener in Abu Dhabi and coincides with a renewed celebration of the breed in a country regarded as a major centre for Arabian horses. The festival will also host the Arabian Peninsula Purebred Championship, featuring 180 horses. The Katara International Arabian Horse Festival 2026 will run from Wednesday until February 12 and remains one of the flagship events organised by the Katara Cultural Village Foundation, reflecting its mission to preserve Arab heritage and promote the Arabian horse as a timeless symbol of authenticity and belonging. 

The fourth and penultimate round of the Qatar Superstock 600 (QSTK 600) Championship delivered another weekend of thrilling action as the title race tightened up at the Lusail International Circuit. In QSTK 600, Mashal al-Naimi opened the round with a commanding victory in Race 1, completing 12 laps in 25:18.209 to lead in his Yamaha R6. Russia’s Dmitry Sedin finished second on a Kawasaki ZX-6, while Abdulla al-Qubaisi completed the podium. Sedin booked another podium spot when he topped the QSTK Trophy Class while India’s Jonathan Emmanuel came second and Hungary’s Marton Belleli finished third. Race 2 saw al-Qubaisi strike back in style, taking a dominant win in 20:48.010 in the 10-lap race ahead of al-Naimi and al-Mutawa who finished second and third respectively. This time, Emmanuel topped the QSTK Trophy class ahead of Belleli and Russia’s Yuri Nekrasov. After Race 2, al-Naimi and al-Qubaisi are locked at the top of the Superstock 600 standings on 180 points each, with Geoffrey Emmanuel third on 115. In Supersport 300 category, Mahmoud Elbanna leads the championship standings with 157 points, followed by Andrea Giacchero (109) and Nolan Macary (100), with riders now heading to the final round which will take place on February 27-28.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and the President of the friendly French Republic Emmanuel Macron discussed the two countries' strategic cooperation relations and ways to support and further strengthen them across various fields. This came during a telephone call HH the Amir received from the French President. During the call, the two sides exchanged views on the latest regional and international developments, particularly efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, developments related to the Iranian issue and its implications for regional security, as well as the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, efforts to achieve a ceasefire and protect civilians.The call further addressed ways to support stability in Lebanon and to safeguard its security and sovereignty.

Qatari driver Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah clinched the Hail Toyota International Baja Rally 2026 title for the sixth time in his career at the 21st edition of the event. Al Attiyah, alongside his French co‑driver Max Delfino, piloting an OPTIMUS MD rally vehicle, finished first in the overall classification after accomplishing the final special stage of 323 km in a total time of 4 hours, 6 minutes, and 32 seconds. Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi claimed second place overall, finishing 42 seconds behind Al Attiyah, while Saudi competitor Dania Akeel secured third place, trailing the leader by 14 minutes. In the Challenger class, Qatari driver Abdulaziz Al Kuwari finished third, behind Saudi driver Yasser Al Saeedan, who took first place, and Omani driver Hamad Al Wahaibi, who finished second. In the motorcycle category, British rider Alex McInnes won the title with a time of 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 17 seconds, with Emirati rider Mohammed Al Balooshi finishing second, 34 minutes and 24 seconds behind, while fellow Emirati Sultan Al Balooshi took third place, two minutes further back. In the local category, Saudi driver Faris Al Shammari earned first place, ahead of his compatriot Muteb Al Qanoun in second, with Khalaf Al Waj'an finishing third.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani discussed with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them in various fields. This followed a phone call His Highness the Amir held Thursday with the president. They also discussed the latest regional and international developments, particularly the current situation and the efforts being made to de-escalate tensions and establish stability. Both sides emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional issues, in a way that contributes to consolidating peace and security and achieving the region's interests.

Dubai is planning projects worth more than 100bn dirhams ($27bn) to expand the Gulf financial hub as an influx of foreign firms pushes occupancy to limits and leaves global firms struggling to find space. The Dubai International Financial Center will start construction on an additional area across the road from its original location, which first opened in 2004. The expanded section — to be named DIFC Zabeel District — will add 17.7mn square feet to the 110-hectare (11.8mn square feet) hub. The completion of the six upcoming phases is slated for 2040, according to a presentation on the project seen by Bloomberg News. The expansion offers a window into the sharp ascent of a financial hub which was established with just 19 firms and 75 employees. In the first half of last year, the DIFC was home to more than 7,700 companies. The number of employees there jumped 9% to around 48,000 people over that period, pushing the authority to looking for ways to meet demand. Since the pandemic, Dubai has emerged as a top destination for global wealth, thanks to its low-tax regime and the relative ease of setting up businesses. The DIFC now hosts the offices of more than 100 hedge funds and nearly 500 wealth and asset managers. Its roster of heavyweights includes Millennium Management LLC and State Street Corp. Still, Dubai is now grappling with rising competition as nearby Abu Dhabi also expands. Its financial centre — called ADGM — has also been booming and is buoyed by access to the emirate’s $1.8tn in sovereign wealth. Meanwhile, the Saudi capital of Riyadh — home to the $1tn Public Investment Fund — is also making a push to draw international financial firms.Faced with the growing heft of other hubs, the DIFC has been exploring ways to become more appealing to money managers. The first phase of the new project will have a development value of 20bn dirhams and include several office and residential buildings. It will also house an innovation hub for startups, an AI campus, three buildings for the DIFC Academy — which offers executive education programs — and an art pavilion. The expansion will use land gifted by Dubai’s ruler. The emirate’s commercial property market has been buoyed by an influx of global financial firms and wealthy individuals lured by low taxes and a time zone that spans Asian and European markets. Grade A office occupancy stood at 95.5% in the third quarter, according to Cushman & Wakefield. Offices will make up 44% of DIFC Zabeel District while residential spaces will occupy 35%, with around 4,000 apartments that are meant to reduce commute time and enable a thriving hub all week long. The new area will be connected to the DIFC and Emirates Towers, an adjacent building complex. In recent years, Dubai’s boom has also stretched its infrastructure and left residents and companies contending with surging rents. At the DIFC, office workers often contend with traffic snarls and housing costs keep rising sharply. When completed, DIFC Zabeel District will help expand the DIFC’s capacity to 42,000 companies and will help accommodate 125,000 people working in the hub, according to the presentation. The 1mn square foot innovation hub will cater to startups and connect banks and firms to growing companies. The AI campus will also allow area for research and development in the technology, according to the presentation. The United Arab Emirates, which Dubai is part of, has attempted to make a bigger push into AI. The DIFC Academy will have 370,000 square feet of space, expanding from a facility that’s presently at 36,800 square feet. It will be a hub for courses offered by scores of global universities in business, law, finance and sustainability. The expansion marks Dubai’s largest infrastructure project since the city kicked off the development of Al Maktoum International Airport, known as Dubai World Central, in Jebel Ali.
