His Excellency the Governor of the Qatar Central Bank (QCB), Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, took part Monday in a series of Gulf financial meetings held in the Bahraini capital, Manama.HE the governor participated in the 86th meeting of the Committee of Governors of Central Banks of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) states, as well as the 21st meeting of the Board of Directors of the Gulf Payments Company and the 65th meeting of the Board of Directors of the Gulf Monetary Council.The meetings were hosted in Manama under the umbrella of the Gulf Co-operation Council.Participants discussed a number of financial and monetary issues on the agenda and took appropriate decisions, the statement said.The regular meetings bring together central bank governors and senior financial officials from GCC member states to coordinate monetary policies and advance regional financial integration.

The Shura Council participated over two days in the 2026 Parliamentary Hearing organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in co-operation with the United Nations at its headquarters in New York, under the theme "Parliaments and the United Nations: Better together, delivering for the people".The Council was represented at the session by Her Excellency Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council Dr Hamda bint Hassan al-Sulaiti, and member of the Council Ahmed bin Ibrahim al-Maliki, alongside a number of Speakers and members of legislative councils and national parliaments, and permanent representatives of states to the United Nations, as well as international experts and advisers.The hearing aimed to explore ways in which parliaments and the United Nations can work together more effectively to achieve a more peaceful, just, sustainable, and prosperous world.The session addressed several key issues, most notably discussing the journey of the United Nations as it marks the 80th anniversary of its founding, and examining ways to strengthen international partnerships to ensure the sustainability of the organisation's objectives. This axis discussed how parliaments can assist the United Nations in fulfilling its commitments.The discussions also included activating the United Nations Pact for the Future by translating global commitments into tangible realities within countries through the oversight and legislative roles of parliaments.The parliamentary hearing further addressed safeguarding public participation by examining the challenges facing parliaments and their impact on the performance of their oversight and legislative roles.It also discussed United Nations financing and securing its future in a manner that ensures financial sustainability and the independence of its programs and activities.The session witnessed the launch of the IPU report titled "Political Violence Against MPs Rising Worldwide", which monitors the phenomenon of violence and harassment targeting parliamentarians and its impact on their lives and ability to carry out their legislative and oversight duties.In her intervention during the discussion of the theme "UN at 80: Renewing Trust and Purpose through Co-operation and Partnership", HE Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, Dr Hamda bint Hassan al-Sulaiti, emphasised that geopolitical divisions among major powers are among the most significant challenges undermining the effectiveness of the United Nations.She added that the organisation's inability to enforce its resolutions in a binding manner, as well as declining trust in it, limit its impact.Her Excellency stressed that legislative councils and parliaments can serve as essential partners to the United Nations in fulfilling its promises by translating international commitments into national legislation, allocating the necessary resources, and following up on implementation through oversight committees.She noted that reforming the United Nations and activating its role requires the inclusion of parliaments as a fundamental pillar in the international system.Under the theme "Financing and Future-Proofing the United Nations", Dr al-Sulaiti pointed out that the future of the United Nations depends on its ability to obtain balanced and predictable resources.She affirmed that legislative councils and parliaments are capable of ensuring the provision of such resources through their roles in legislation, oversight, and approval of national budgets. They can also advocate for innovative sources of funding, such as programs supported by certain organisations and civil society institutions, partnerships with the private sector, and the expansion of UN trust funds.In this regard, Dr al-Sulaiti talked about the contributions of the State of Qatar and its continued support for United Nations projects and programmes, noting that Qatar has become strongly present in most of the organisation's activities. Since joining the United Nations in 1971, Qatar has been keen to contribute effectively to achieving the organisation's goals in maintaining international peace and security and supporting development across the world.For his part, Ahmed al-Maliki stated in his intervention during the discussion of the theme "Translating Together International Commitments into National Realities", that parliaments can work jointly with other parliaments to translate UN principles into tangible realities that serve peoples and enhance trust in the international system.In the other session, which included the launch of the Inter-Parliamentary Union report monitoring violence and harassment targeting parliamentarians, al-Maliki affirmed that intimidation and threats against parliamentarians undermine the ability of legislative institutions to perform their core functions.He called for the establishment of national safeguards, such as deterrent legislation and parliamentary security measures, as well as international guarantees through the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Un Iran’s top security official met the Sultan of Oman in Muscat Tuesday, days after a first round of talks there between officials from Washington and Tehran last Friday. Ali Larijani, who heads the Supreme National Security Council, and Sultan Haitham bin Tariq “discussed the latest developments in the Iranian-American negotiations”, the official Oman News Agency said. Larijani also met Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who mediated Friday’s indirect talks between US and Iranian officials, according to photos shared on Larijani’s official Telegram channel. Larijani and Sultan Haitham also explored “ways to reach a balanced and just agreement between the two sides, and emphasised the importance of returning to the table of dialogue and negotiation”. While in Muscat, Larijani warned against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intervening in the talks, according to a post on X. He urged the US to “remain alert” to what he described as Israel’s destructive role ahead of Netanyahu’s trip to Washington, it said. During his trip to Muscat, Larijani also met Mohammed Abdulsalam, the spokesperson for Yemen’s Houthi fighters. Larijani will head to Qatar next, according to Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei. The trip comes after Iran and the US resumed negotiations in Oman on Friday for the first time since the 12-day Iran-Israel war last June, which was briefly joined by the US military. 

Airports in the Middle East are witnessing a fundamental shift in retail dynamics, with younger travellers emerging as the new big spenders, according to an official of the Airports Council International (ACI).Stefano Baronci, director general of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, noted that the findings stem from ACI’s latest retail travel report, unveiled during the Trinity Forum in Doha last week.“Passengers in the Middle East are still very much willing to spend at airports, but only where value, relevance, and convenience are immediately clear,” Baronci told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview.He said, “The key shift is that passenger mix and contextual relevance now matter far more than sheer footfall. In other words, higher volumes alone no longer guarantee stronger retail performance; what matters is who the passengers are, why they are travelling, and how well the retail offer aligns with their needs and expectations.”Baronci explained that generational differences are reshaping strategies across the region, noting that Gen Z and Millennials are more price-aware, digitally fluent, and intolerant of static retail environments, yet they are also the highest-value cohorts when engaged effectively.“Our research shows that Gen Z and Millennial international travellers, particularly in non-economy cabins, record the highest average spend and exhibit a markedly higher propensity to purchase luxury goods, perfumes, and premium cosmetics, concentrating a significant share of their spend in high-value discretionary categories. They expect fast, self-directed journeys, clear value propositions, and brands that feel authentic rather than generic,” he further stated.On the other hand, Baronci pointed out that older travellers are more conservative. “Boomers and Gen X account for a disproportionate share of non-spenders, and when they do purchase, they tend to favour familiar, lower-risk categories such as confectionery, gifting items, and travel staples, prioritising trust, clarity, and efficiency over novelty or experience,” he emphasised.Baronci stated that this divergence means airports must abandon a one-size-fits-all approach: “Future strategies will need to balance convenience-led, value-signposted offers and strong confectionery and gifting propositions for older cohorts, alongside digitally enabled, premium-curated, and experience-light luxury concepts for younger travellers. The challenge is less about adding more retail and more about aligning category mix, pacing, and presentation with who is travelling through the terminal at any given time.”Asked about the Trinity Forum, Baronci said the industry is moving decisively toward experience-led commercial design. “Airports are moving decisively toward experience-led commercial design, recognising that relevance, ease, and emotional engagement now matter as much as square metres and category density,” he said.Baronci also said, “Equally important is the push for stronger alignment between airports, airlines, and retailers, particularly around passenger flow, dwell time, and data sharing. Participants consistently highlighted that fragmented incentives slow innovation, while closer coordination enables faster responses to shifting passenger profiles and demand patterns.”He added that data-driven agility will define the next phase, noting that airports are increasingly using passenger insight and real-time performance data to adjust layouts, offers, and commercial strategies with greater speed and precision. Taken together, Baronci emphasised that these themes point to a future where agility, collaboration, and experience design will be central to global airport strategies over the next five years.On Qatar’s role as host and significance in this year’s Trinity Forum, Baronci said: “Qatar’s involvement significantly elevates the standing of the Trinity Forum because it provides a living reference point for what integrated excellence looks like at scale.”He added: “Hamad International Airport and Qatar Duty Free exemplify how connectivity, premium passenger experience, and operational discipline can be aligned within a single, coherent ecosystem, rather than treated as separate objectives.”
