QNL hosts panel discussion on role of maritime trade in shaping British diplomacy

Qatar National Library (QNL) hosted a panel discussion examining the role of early maritime trade networks in shaping British diplomacy in the region.Titled "Diplomacy and Influence: A Reading of the British Presence in the Gulf", the dynamic session gathered academics, students, and researchers for an in-depth exploration of the historical footprint of the East India Company.The discussion illustrated how the Company's trade routes across the Arabian Gulf and its close links with British-Indian trade networks laid the foundation for broader regional engagement.The panel examined how the conclusion of maritime treaties and commercial activities generated essential geopolitical knowledge, ultimately expanding British influence far beyond direct trade, particularly amid competition with other regional powers.Assistant Dean for Social Sciences and Humanities at Qatar University's College of Arts and Sciences, Dr Aisha Hadi al-Rashdi offered expert insights into the diplomatic tools that strengthened British-Gulf relations through soft power.Commenting on the panel and the relevance of its theme, Dr Aisha Hadi al-Rashdi, Assistant Dean for Social Sciences and Humanities at Qatar University, said: "This panel creates an important space for dialogue and the exchange of perspectives on the history of British-Gulf relations, while examining the diplomatic and cultural forces that shaped their development over time."She added: "Conversations of this kind also allow us to revisit history from different angles and enrich our understanding by bringing a wider range of experiences and perspectives into the discussion, including those from the Gulf. They also help connect historical sources and events with questions that remain relevant today, while encouraging thoughtful research, responsible dialogue and greater awareness of the region's history and international relations among the public, researchers and younger generations."Moderated by Community Engagement Specialist at the Heritage Library, Ikhlas Ahmed, the engaging panel connected these historical insights with the Library's extensive archival resources.The session highlighted the Heritage Library's collections, providing attendees with a tangible link to the rich history of Qatari-British relations and regional diplomacy.

Home favourite Amy Hunt took a successful first step in the women's 100m to her lofty ambition of leaving the European championships with four golds.Hunt, who draws inspiration from the song 'I Want It All' by Sharpay Evans from the highly-popular movie 'High School Musical 3', held off Poland's Ewa Swoboda to win the blue riband event in 11.00 seconds on Monday.The 24-year-old will now turn her attention to the 200m, heats and semi-finals of which are on Wednesday, with the final a day later.Then comes the 4x100m relay on Saturday and the mixed sprint relay on Sunday."I really want to win it all and I'm so happy now I've got one out of four done," said Hunt.The mixed relay, she said, "gives us another opportunity and that should be really exciting to bring together some of the biggest names and British sprinting onto one team together will be really iconic".Still the world record holder for the women's under-18 200m, 22.42sec set in June 2019, Hunt is an English graduate from Cambridge University and only started training full time after graduating in 2023.She was part of the British team that won European 4x100m relay gold in Rome in 2024, going on to claim Olympic silver in the relay in Paris later that year and then winning silver in the 200m at the Tokyo world championships a year later -- her first senior individual global medal. Coming of ageHunt, currently based in Padua north of Venice with Italian coach Marco Airale, backed that up with Commonwealth 100m silver two weeks ago in Glasgow."I have had such a string of silvers and I was starting to get a bit fed up with it, so I thought it was time for gold," said Hunt.The Briton sported some gold earrings, a gift from her parents, as they wanted her "to finally level up, because I wear all-silver jewellery"."They said it was time for gold - they left me that note two nights ago - so it made me quite emotional."It was definitely time for me to come of age here."Hunt was hopeful she could take the "momentum and the good vibes" from the 100m victory into the rest of the week."I'm so excited to see what it brings me. I felt so euphoric crossing the line as the first half of the race was a little bit messy," she said."I think me and the 200m might have a lovely little reunion and make up these champs."We did a lot of testing in the last couple of weeks and some time trials we always do in the lead up to a major champs and it's looking really good."I'm ahead of where I was before Tokyo so hopefully I can look forward to a happy renewal of our vows!"

Octogenarian is first killed in British Columbia wildfire

An 80-year-old woman died in the fast-moving Bald Range wildfire in British Columbia's wine country, Canadian police said, after the blaze nearly doubled in size over the weekend and forced the evacuation of people in the area.The death was the first reported as a result of the wildfire in the region, which has been shrouded in smoke and fire as hot and dry conditions increased the scale of the blaze.The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement late on Sunday that the Meadow Valley resident was evacuating her home with a family member when she reportedly died suddenly. Police believe her death to be a result of the wildfire and are investigating, the statement said.Nearby Summerland, a district municipality with about 12,000 people, has a significant senior population that was evacuated over the weekend. The senior people's homes were given advance notice, Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes said.Canada has experienced a hot summer this year, sparking fires in remote forests and other regions, leading to more than 4,600 fires burning 4 million hectares of land.Officials said the Bald Range wildfire triggered the largest evacuation event in British Columbia so far this summer. More than 20,000 people across the province have been forced to leave their homes. The United States is also grappling with wildfires. Evacuees forced to flee a cluster of fires near Spokane, Washington, were allowed back to their homes on Sunday.At the height of the conflagration, as many as 64,000 residents were under evacuation orders.The BC Wildfire Service said on Monday it expects lightning to start new wildfires in the Okanagan region, which has been receiving limited rain. High temperatures and heightened wind gusts will continue in the Okanagan and southeastern regions of BC, which can increase fires, the agency said. The Bald Range fire has now spread over 13,600 hectares since it was discovered on Friday.

Fernandez wins British Grand Prix

Aprilia-Trackhouse's Spanish rider Raul Fernandez won the British MotoGP Grand Prix on Sunday, claiming just the second race victory of his career.Championship leader Jorge Martin started on pole but was outpaced from the flag by his 25-year-old compatriot. Martin finished second with Italian Marco Bezzecchi rounding off the podium."I'm happy and this win is special because we got three consecutive podiums and this one was a victory," Fernandez said."Now we want more."After crashing out of contention in the sprint on Saturday, Fernandez said he was "an idiot".But on Sunday, he led all 20 laps of the Silverstone circuit from start to finish after Martin got off to a poor start, possibly due to a mechanical problem following a shower of sparks from the rear.Fernandez is the 12th different winner at Silverstone in 12 Grand Prix races on the legendary course, which also hosts Formula One Grands Prix.It was nonetheless a fine weekend for 2024 world champion and Silverstone sprint winner Martin as he grew his lead in the overall standings to 31 points."This result gave us a big, big boost for our motivation," Martin said."Today I wanted that victory so badly. I was really focussed, but I did a small mistake in the first corner and I lost a lot of places."Japan's Ai Ogura, who had started second on the grid and was sitting second overall, slid off midway through the race and now trails Martin by 37 points.Instead Martin's Aprilia teammate Bezzecchi is now his principal challenger for the title following a heroic weekend after he had spent the summer break recovering from a collarbone fracture suffered in qualifying at the Germany MotoGP last month.Spain's Alex Marquez of Ducati-Gresini finished fourth, ahead of KTM's Spaniard Pedro Acosta and Italy's Fabio Di Giannantonio of Ducati satellite team VR46.Reigning world champion Marc Marquez of Spain, on his factory Ducati, finished only seventh.

Aprilia's Martin extends championship lead with British GP sprint win

Jorge Martin led from start to finish to win ‌the British Grand Prix sprint at Silverstone on Saturday, extending his MotoGP championship lead as the Italian ‌manufacturer locked out the podium in dominant fashion.The Spaniard converted pole ‌position into a commanding 10-lap sprint win, ‌with Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura finishing ‌second and Martin's team mate Marco Bezzecchi completing an all-Aprilia podium in third.Martin's victory moved him to 220 points in the championship standings, opening up a 17-point gap over second-placed Ogura while Bezzecchi leapfrogged Marc Marquez to move up to third, 27 points behind.Marquez's title aspirations suffered a significant blow as the Ducati rider slumped from sixth on the grid to ninth at the chequered flag after suffering from tyre wear. He now sits 29 points behind Martin ahead of Sunday's race."A lot of work during summer, finally, all the work we did was worth it. So I'm really, really happy. Today, what can I say? Incredible job," Martin said.The polesitter, who smashed the lap ‌record in qualifying, made a perfect getaway but had to manage his resources carefully as tyre degradation became a significant factor."I tried to be as fast as possible, trying to manage. At the end, I had no rear tyre (grip)," he added. "So I thought Ai would catch me, but I was able to manage the distance and another sprint victory is always amazing."Ducati riders had won the last three sprints at Silverstone but the best they could manage was Gresini Racing's Alex Marquez finishing fourth, while VR46 Racing rider Fabio Di Giannantonio was fifth.While Martin controlled proceedings at the front, the drama unfolded behind as Marquez made contact with Bezzecchi at the start before recovering to ‌move up to fourth. MARQUEZ SUFFERS WITH ‌GRIPHowever, the Aprilias' superior corner speed soon proved decisive, with Bezzecchi overtaking the reigning champion on lap five and pulling clear.Marquez's afternoon went from bad to worse as tyre wear hampered his pace, allowing his brother Alex to move past him before KTM's Pedro Acosta, Joan Mir and Franco Morbidelli also found their way through.The reigning world champion barely held on to ninth place as Diogo Moreira closed in during the final moments, with Ducati mechanics immediately examining his rear tyre upon his return to the pits.But the day belonged to Aprilia and, while Martin was elated, an emotional Bezzecchi was in tears after securing a podium on his return from collarbone surgery, with the Italian still not fully fit and riding through pain."It was a tough period, as you probably can imagine. So it was very important to come back and enjoy on the bike. We did a very good job," Bezzecchi said."It's difficult for me to say what I'm feeling right now. But I want to say just a ‌massive thanks to all the team and all the people that stayed close to me. They worked hard with me."
