Qatar will face Australia in an friendly at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on November 13 as the two-time defending Asian champions step up preparations for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.The Qatar Football Association announced the fixture on Thursday, with the match set to be Al Annabi's first since their appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Qatar won it's maiden Asian Cup title in 2019 and successfully defended it in 2023. They became only the fifth team to win the Asian Cup in consecutive editions, joining Iran, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Japan in achieving the feat.The 2027 Asian Cup will be hosted by Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, with Qatar drawn in Group F alongside four-time champions Japan, Thailand and Indonesia. The friendly against Australia will provide an important test for Al Annabi as they prepare to defend their continental crown.Qatar will also compete in the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup, which Saudi Arabia will host from September 23 to October 6. The Gulf Cup draw placed Qatar in Group B alongside the UAE, Bahrain and Yemen. Group A comprises hosts Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman and Kuwait.Qatar name 23-player squad for Asian GamesQatar have announced their 23-player squad for the football competition at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which gets underway on September 15. Coach Jose Angel Lacunza has selected three goalkeepers and 20 outfield players for the tournament.Goalkeepers Abubakr Mohammed, Jalal Amir and Mohammed Fawzi have been included, along with Mohammed Hani, Faisal Mohammed, Yaman Jarar, Bassam Adel, Zaid Burhan, Ali Shehabi, Al Waleed Mohammed, Atef Magdi, Jassim al-Hamad, Mohammed Ali, Muath Ibrahim, Youssef Mohammed, Nawaf al-Yahri, Tamim al-Qadi, Ziad Fadi, Qais al-Rawi, Nasser Adel, Mohammed Khaled, Marwan Sharif and Ghanem al-Menhali.Qatar have been drawn in Group D alongside South Korea and Saudi Arabia. The football competition will feature 15 teams divided into four groups, with Group D consisting of three teams while the other groups have four each.The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. The tournament will then continue in a knockout format through to the final and third-place play-off. The football competition begins on September 15, four days before the official opening ceremony of the Asian Games on September 19. The Games run until October 4. 

The Local Organising Committee for Football Events (LOC) has announced that the Lebanon v Yemen AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier will take place on June 4 at Grand Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Originally scheduled for March 31, 2026 in Beirut, Lebanon will now play their home match on neutral soil in Qatar, where they face Yemen’s Al-Yaman as-Sa'eed in this decisive fixture jointly staged by the LOC and the Lebanese Football Association (LFA). Starting 31 May, fans in Qatar and across the region can purchase tickets for the much-anticipated qualifier at www.roadtoqatar.qa. Upon purchase, tickets will be made immediately available on Road to Qatar, the official ticketing app for the match. Grand Hamad Stadium will host Lebanon for the second time during their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign, where they previously claimed a 2-0 win over Bhutan on October 9, 2025. The venue also most recently hosted Yemen in the FIFA Arab Cup Qualifier on November 26, 2025 that ended in a dramatic 4-4 draw against Comoros. Lebanon and Yemen will meet for the second time in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign, with their previous encounter on June 10, 2025 ending in a 0-0 draw. On 4 June, both nations will vie for the final spot in Group E of the tournament, with the winner joining South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. The 19th edition of the AFC Asian Cup is set to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027. Lebanon have made three appearances at the competition, as hosts in 2000, and qualifying in 2019 and at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023. The 2019 edition also marked Yemen's historic debut at the continental championship. The Lebanon v Yemen qualifier is the latest in a series of high-profile international matches hosted by Qatar, showcasing the international football community's trust in its ability to deliver world-class sporting experiences. Grand Hamad Stadium, with a capacity of 13,000, has hosted several international fixtures, including FIFA World Cup qualification matches. The stadium also served as the base camp for the Brazil national football team during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and currently serves as home ground of Qatari club Al Arabi SC.       

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui is expecting a tough time next January when the two-time champions arrive in Saudi Arabia to defend their AFC Asian Cup crown they won in 2019 and 2024.  On Sunday, Qatar were drawn with four-time winners Japan, Thailand and Indonesia in Group F of the 24-team tournament set to be held in Saudi Arabia from Jan 7-Feb 5 next year.  Qatar beat Japan in the final of the 2019 edition staged in the UAE for their maiden AFC Asian Cup title triumph. Five years years later on home soil, Qatar beat Jordan in the title clash of Asia's showpiece football tournament to win two back-to-back trophies under the captaincy of Hasan al-Haydos.  After the draw ceremony staged in Riyadh on Sunday, Lopetegui said: “We are optimistic but understand the qualities of our opponents and we will play in a very tough group. Japan are the main favourites, Indonesia have improved a lot, and so have Thailand. It’s going to be a tough and balanced group, now we have a lot of work to do.” Born in Asteasu, Spain, Lopetegui has enjoyed a remarkable career both on the pitch and on the sidelines. Appointed as the head coach of the Spanish national team on July 21, 2016, he managed 16 matches, securing 12 victories and 4 draws. He was named Qatar coach last year in May.  Lopetegui's next big assignment is the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be held in the US, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.  Thailand's coach Anthony Hudson said: “It’s an exciting group. It’s a good group. Obviously some big teams in there. For us, it’s a great opportunity to play against some really good opponents and anything can happen. If you want to play in the Asian Cup, it’s great to meet a team like Japan. Our opening game against Qatar is a great game. Then you look at Indonesia who are improving, there’s a huge rivalry there.” John Herdman, coach of Indonesia, said: “The expectation for Indonesia is to represent the country as the fans want to see us. They are the most passionate of fans and every time the players put on the jersey, we owe them everything we got. This tournament gives us a chance to do something special for them. Thailand are a strong team but every game in this group is huge.”

Defending champions Qatar and record winners Japan were drawn in the same group for next year's AFC Asian Cup, while hosts Saudi Arabia will meet Kuwait, Oman and Palestine.The draw for the 2027 edition of the continent's showpiece event, which runs from January 7 to February 5, took place on Saturday in Diriyah on the outskirts of Riyadh.Saudi Arabia is staging the Asian Cup for the first time as the kingdom views the tournament as a precursor to hosting the 2034 World Cup.For the third time running, the Asian Cup will feature 24 national teams, with 23 already confirmed.The sole remaining spot will go to either Lebanon or Yemen, who contest a play-off in Doha on June 4.A tie would be enough for Lebanon to qualify.At the draw, Japan were placed in Group F alongside Qatar, Thailand and Indonesia.Japan have lifted the trophy a record four times, although they have not won the tournament since 2011.Saudi Arabia and Iran each have three wins, with Qatar crowned champions for the past two tournaments, in 2019 and 2023.Last time out, the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts defeated Jordan 3-1 in the final.Both countries have qualified for this summer's global finals, with Jordan competing for the first time.On Saturday, teams were divided into four pots of six in accordance with the latest FIFA ranking as of April 1. At 18th in the official standings, Japan are the lead country in Asia, with Iran second (No. 21), South Korea third (No. 25) and Australia fourth (No. 27).Allocated first position in Pot 1, Saudi Arabia are looking to add to the three titles they won in 1984, 1988 and 1996.The opening match will be played on June 7 between Saudi Arabia and Palestine at the refurbished King Fahd Sports City Stadium, its 72,000 capacity making it the largest of the venues used.

Mahmoud Alaswad’s late penalty earned Syria a 1-0 win against Qatar in their AFC U-23 Asian Cup B match at Jeddah’s Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium Saturday. The result took Syria level on three points with United Arab Emirates, who they meet on Tuesday to decide who advances together with defending champions Japan to the quarter-finals. The second straight defeat ended Qatar’s chances of advancing in the tournament. The match endured a lukewarm start before a lapse in concentration by Mohamed Khaled saw him robbed of possession inside his own box but the Qatari forward recovered to block Muhannad Fadel’s attempt in the 20th minute. Syria were given another opportunity when Alhashmi Mohialdin’s poor pass out from defence was intercepted by Dahhan but the midfielder’s strike from distance was straight at Qatar custodian Amir Katoul. Qatar’s only chance of the opening half came in the 33rd minute when Rashid al-Abdulla used his strength to power into the box but his shot from an acute angle was parried away by Maksim Sarraf. After the interval, Syria stepped up their intensity with Katoul forced to make a diving save to his right to deny a low Mahmoud al-Aswad shot from the edge of the box. Such was Syria’s dominance of the game that head coach Ilidio Vale tried to get the Qatar midfield up and running by replacing Abdulaziz Hasan and Anas Abweny with Mahdi Almejaba and Jassem Alsharshani just before the hour mark. Despite the changes, it was Syria who continued to find the openings, with Mohammad al-Mustafa twice producing curling efforts from inside the box only to see them go agonisingly wide. The breakthrough finally came in the 85th minute through al-Aswad’s penalty after Ayoub Aloui brought down al-Mustafa in the box, with the Qatari defender also given his marching orders for the foul. 

United Arab Emirates emerged 2-0 winners against Qatar to get their AFC U-23 Asian Cup campaign off to a fine start Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The result means UAE join Japan as the early pacesetters in Group B with the latter having beaten Syria 5-0 in an earlier match. Qatar spurned the chance to take the lead as early as the third minute when Alhashmi Mohialdin’s penalty was saved by Khaled Tawhid. Ali Ghulais was also called into action at the other end, the UAE custodian’s outstretched leg denying Junior Ndiaye after the Montpellier forward had been put through by Ali al-Memari. Ndiaye’s threat brought about UAE’s opener in the 21st minute when the forward’s strike from outside the box bounced off Ghulais, with the rebound smashed into the bottom corner by al-Memari. A sweeping move in the 37th minute doubled UAE’s lead, Richard Akonnor exchanging passes with al-Memari to glide into space on the left with his cutback then swept home by Ndiaye. Ilidio Vale rang the changes for Qatar for the start of the second half with a triple change, bringing on Moath Taha, Mobark Hamza and Rashid al-Abdulla as the Portuguese tactician looked to find a way back into the game. A couple of long range efforts from Qatar highlighted their improved performance with Anas Abweny and Taha forcing Tawhid to make fine saves. Despite being put under more pressure in the second half, UAE - led by the impressive Leonard Amesimeku in defence - comfortably kept Qatar at arm’s length to claim the points. UAE will next face Japan while Qatar take on Syria with both matches to be played on Saturday. 

Coach Herve Renard Sunday said Saudi Arabia are expecting a feisty clash against Jordan in the semi-final of the FIFA Arab Cup today.Renard, who coached Saudi Arabia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Sunday also said his players won’t adopt half measures against the 2023 AFC Asian Cup finalists.“After reaching this stage of a tournament, all matches are usually difficult and tough, and require the best effort from every player. And certainly all of my players are aware of this andthey are ready for Jordan,” Renard said Sunday at a press conference.“I have confidence in the players’ ability to perform at their best and win so we can reach the final,” Renard said ahead of the match scheduled to take place at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.“Our preparations have been good for this match. We will be playing to win so we can play the final,” the popular Frenchman added.The Saudi coach added: “Our goal is to to get the win in order to please the Saudi fans who have come to Qatar in large numbers to support the team. We will spare no effort to raise the flag of Saudi football here.”Renard, 57, said that he has ‘a good relationship’ with Jordan’s coach Jamal Sellami.“I know he is focused on working with his own team just like any other coach. I have worked with him for a long time,” he said.Morocco coach Sellami Sunday said: “Our preparations are good, we gave some players a rest and Sunday will be the final preparation.”The coach added: “We will face a strong and a title favourite team. They have no absences while we have a key player missing out. For the first time, we will play without Yazan al-Naimat and Musa al-Taamari together. We will have to defend smart in the match.”Sellami continued: “We know the strength of the Saudi national team. We will have to be at our best.”The Jordan coach admitted Saudi Arabia will be a tough opponent and that his side won’t be thinking of the final just yet.Sellami told reporters Sunday: “My focus is on the next match. We will face a solid team in defence, attack and midfield. They have some of the best players in Asia. They also have Mohammed Kanno, who has returned to his best form.“The most important thing now is to face Saudi Arabia, and then consider the final.“I have a good relationship with Herve Renard and there’s mutual respect also. He deserves respect and is worthy of it.” 

The draw for the 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup took place Wednesday in Jakarta, Indonesia. The draw ceremony saw 16 teams divided into four groups, each containing four teams, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the quarterfinals.Host nation Indonesia was drawn into Group A alongside Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, and South Korea.Group B: Thailand, Vietnam, Kuwait, and Lebanon.Group C: Uzbekistan, four-time champions Japan, Tajikistan and Australia.Group D: Iran, the record holder with 13 titles, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia.

Qatar notched their second win after edging India 2-1 in Group H of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers Saturday. India made a promising start and looked dangerous every time they went forward but it was Qatar who took the lead in the 18th minute.Al Hashmi al-Hussain rose highest to nod home his header which looped over India keeper Sahil Poonia and into the back of the net. The second half saw India push more bodies forward and they levelled the score in the 52nd minute after Muhammad Suhail converted Mohammed Sanan’s cross with a headed finish.However, India suffered a blow in the 65th minute when Pramveer Singh was sent off for picking up his second yellow card after bringing down Noureldin Ibrahim inside the box.Jassem al-Sharshani made no mistake from the spot to seal Qatar the victory. Qatar face Bahrain in their final fixture on Tuesday with India taking on Brunei.In another Group H match, Bahrain bounced back from their opening day loss against India to hand Brunei a 10-0 thrashing to reignite the nation’s hopes.

Qatar romped to a 13-0 win over Brunei in their Group H clash at the AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 Qualifiers at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium Wednesday.Qatar’s opening goal came in the fourth minute through Moustafa Asar and Jassem al-Sharshani claiming their second two minutes later.Mubarak Hamza converted a penalty for their third in the 11th minute as the hosts scored their seventh in the 33rd minute through Abdulaziz Hassan as the West Asian side proceeded to race to a 7-0 lead at the interval.Three more goals came within the span of four minutes in the second half, with Asar claiming his hat-trick in the 54th, Noureldan Ibrahim adding another two minutes later and then Asar again in the 57th minute.Marawan Brimil put his name on the scoresheet in the 70th and 83rd minutes before Ibrahim wrapped proceedings with his brace in the fifth minute of stoppage time.In the other Group H clash, India eked out a 2-0 win over Bahrain at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium.A first half strike by Muhammad Suhail and another in the dying minutes by Shivaldo Singh was enough to give India victory over Bahrain in their group opener.Both sides were evenly matched in the first half an hour before India broke the deadlock in the 31st minute through Suhail, who plays for Indian Super League side Punjab FC.While Bahrain had an edge in possession in the second half, they failed to find the equaliser, managing only three shots at target.They lost any chance of gaining a point when India doubled their lead five minutes into stoppage time with a goal from Singh.Bahrain will play Brunei on Saturday.
