Ton-up Nicholls turns the screw for New Zealand against England

Henry Nicholls's superb unbeaten century saw New Zealand into an utterly dominant position against England in the second Test at the Oval on Friday.New Zealand were 252-3 in their second innings at stumps on the third day in south London -- a huge overall lead of 352 runs -- with Nicholls 119 not out.The Black Caps, looking to level this three-match series after a 115-run defeat in the first Test at Lord's, had been faltering at 28-2 on Friday when Nicholls was joined in the middle by Rachin Ravindra.But the two left-handers restored New Zealand's grip on the game with an excellent third-wicket partnership of 161 in 33 overs that only ended when Ravindra was lbw for 76 to Jacob Bethell deep into the final session.New Zealand led by exactly 100 runs on first innings after Matt Henry took five wickets as England were dismissed for 291 earlier on Friday.England then had a glimmer of hope when New Zealand captain Tom Latham and fellow opener Devon Conway both fell cheaply.RAVINDRA REPRIEVEAnd the Black Caps were almost 48-3 when Ravindra was dropped on just seven by James Rew, the struggling debutant England wicket-keeper failing to hold a diving left-handed chance off Josh Tongue.Nicholls was given the unenviable task of replacing Kane Williamson at No 3 after arguably New Zealand's greatest batsman of all time shocked the cricket world by retiring from international duty following the first Test rather than waiting until the end of the series.But the 34-year-old Nicholls, out for just 24 in the first innings, demonstrated plenty of grit and concentration second time around, while still scoring briskly.The elegant Ravindra, following his reprieve by Rew, was largely untroubled by England's quicks repeatedly bowling bouncers on a good pitch during a 79-ball fifty featuring 11 fours.Stand-in England skipper Joe Root deployed seven bowlers in total, including his own part-time off-spin, during the day's play.It was Bethell's left-arm spin, however, that proved Ravindra's undoing when the batsman was given out lbw after missing a sweep to leave New Zealand 189-3.But the resolute Nicholls completed the 11th century of his 59-Test career when he pulled Bethell for four -- his 14th boundary in 136 balls faced. HENRY GRABS FIVE WICKETSEarlier, fast-medium bowler Henry returned fine innings figures of 5-80 in 24 overs.An England team showing five changes from Lord's and missing captain Ben Stokes, omitted after breaking a team curfew, would have been in an even worse position but for tailender Matt Fisher's 50 not out -- his maiden Test half-century.Fisher, on his Surrey home ground, was supported in a last-wicket partnership of 53 by Sonny Baker, one of three England debutants, after they came together with the hosts in dire straits at 238-9.England had resumed play on 222-6 on Friday morning beneath sunny blue skies -- seemingly ideal conditions for batting.Debutant Jordan Cox added just five runs to his overnight was 22 when a clip off Henry was well-caught at short midwicket by a diving Latham.Henry, troubled by back spasms at Lord's, then dismissed Jofra Archer (eight) after a top-edged cut was brilliantly caught by wicket-keeper Tom Blundell, standing up to the stumps.Tongue's miscued drive off Henry was well-held one-handed, at the second attempt, by a back-pedalling Nathan Smith at mid-on to give the 34-year-old paceman his seventh five-wicket haul in 35 Tests.BRIEF SCORES New Zealand 391 and 252 for 3 (Nicholls 119*, Ravindra 76) lead England 291 (Gay 53, Fisher 50*, Henry 5-80) by 352 runs

Phillips hits maiden Test century as New Zealand put England in trouble

New Zealand seized the upper hand in the second Test after extending their first innings to 391 on Thursday before working through England's top order to leave the hosts on 222-6 at stumps on the second day at The Oval.Glenn Phillips helped himself to his first Test century before lunch as England's ragged bowling allowed New Zealand to add 100 vital runs to their overnight 291-7.In reply, Ben Duckett was run out after a rapid 36 and fellow opener Emilio Gay made a half century but New Zealand pace bowler Matt Henry trapped both England dangermen Joe Root and Harry Brook lbw to leave the hosts reeling.Debutants James Rew and Jordan Cox steadied the ship but Rew became Will O'Rourke's second victim just before the close to make it emphatically New Zealand's day.England will return on Friday still 169 runs behind with just the tailenders to come and facing a big deficit.Phillips, who withstood a ferocious spell of bowling by Jofra Archer the previous night, said his milestone moment came the day before the anniversary of his dad's passing."That made it pretty special," he said. "That was one for him. The bowlers did a fantastic job today. They brought it back really well, especially after tea."We need to keep England out in the dirt as long as possible (in our second innings) but we have four wickets to take first."New Zealand, trailing 1-0 in the three-match series after a chaotic defeat at Lord's, began the day still some way off posting a healthy first-innings total on a good pitch.They were helped, though, by some mystifying bowling as England's non-stop barrage of bouncers backfired.Phillips, 49 not out overnight, needed no second invitation to tuck in as England completely lost control with the new ball being wasted. He shared an 87-run partnership with Kyle Jamieson who made 41 having been reprieved on 15 when Duckett dropped a simple catch on the boundary.Jamieson was eventually bowled by part-time spinner Jacob Bethell who ended with figures of three for 26.Archer was surprisingly held back in the morning despite England's toil although he finally appeared and removed Matt Henry before Phillips was last man out, caught at deep mid-wicket after a heave at Matthew Fisher.Duckett looked dangerous and accelerated to 36 from 25 balls but was run out as Gay called for a single that was never on and Nathan Smith swooped to throw down the stumps. DISCIPLINED ATTACKNew Zealand's disciplined pace quartet plugged away and Smith had Bethell caught behind by Tom Blundell.Gay ground out his second half century, following his debut knock at Lord's, from 112 balls, the slowest 50 by an England player since Brendon McCullum became head coach and Ben Stokes captain in 2022 - the so-called Bazball era.He was out for 53 as he turned his head away from a rising delivery by O'Rourke but failed to lower his bat and was given out, caught behind, after a review.Root, leading the test side for a record-extending 65th time after Stokes was left out following an investigation into a nightclub incident after the first test, looked serene but fell four short of his half century as Henry jagged one back.Two more runs would have taken Root to 14,000 test runs.Brook carved one remarkable back-foot six off O'Rourke but with wicket keeper Blundell standing up, he was trapped in his crease as Henry again found some movement.Rew made a confident 24 before attempting to hook O'Rourke for six but only gloving a looping catch to Daryl Mitchell. BRIEF SCORES: England 222 for 6 (Gay 53, Henry 2-57) trail New Zealand 391 (Phillips 100, Blundell 51, Bethell 3-26) by 169 runs.

Blundell, Phillips lead New Zealand recovery against England

Tom Blundell hit New Zealand's first fifty of the series and Glenn Phillips posted an unbeaten 49 as the tourists fought back against England on an intriguing opening day of the second Test at the Oval on Wednesday.The Black Caps were 291-7 at stumps as England looked to put the Ben Stokes saga behind them.Blundell made 51 and shared valuable partnerships of 81 with Daryl Mitchell (44) and 75 with Phillips after New Zealand, sent into bat, had slumped to 107-4.This was a much-improved New Zealand batting display following their 115-run defeat in the first of a three-match series at Lord's earlier this month.But on day where four quicks did the bulk of the bowling, it was all-rounder Jacob Bethell's left-arm spin that did for Blundell, deceived by a slower, flighted delivery he miscued to stand-in England skipper Joe Root at short midwicket.Blundell's exit came two deliveries after he completed an 82-ball fifty on an an Oval pitch with far more pace and bounce than the one at Lord's, where New Zealand were dismissed for just 113 and 138 in difficult batting conditions.Bethell also had Nathan Smith top-edging a sweep before the close in a return of 2-8 in five overs. BAKER DOUBLEFast bowler Sonny Baker - one of three debutants in the England side - marked his introduction to Test cricket with an encouraging 2-63 in 15 after the 23-year-old Hampshire quick managed an impressive speed of 88 mph (142 kph) in his first over.England dropped captain Stokes and Gus Atkinson after the pair broke a team curfew after a morale-boosting win at Lord's that followed their humiliating 4-1 Ashes series loss in Australia.The duo stayed out in a late-night drinking session which reportedly ended in a physical confrontation involving a Saracens rugby player.England made five changes, with Baker, batsman Jordan Cox and wicket-keeper James Rew -- a late call-up after Jamie Smith withdrew on Tuesday following the birth of his second child -- all making their debuts.Ollie Robinson, who took seven wickets at Lord's, was ruled out through injury while Jofra Archer returned following his IPL commitments to spearhead England's pace attack.Playing in only his second Test, four years after his debut, Matthew Fisher had Devon Conway caught behind by Rew, rewarding the selectors' decision to pick him instead of dropped spinner Shoaib Bashir.Henry Nicholls has been given the unenviable task of replacing Kane Williamson at number three.Williamson announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect following the series opener.Archer had New Zealand captain Tom Latham brilliantly caught by Bethell, diving high to his right at gully, for 27 with Nicholls out for 24 when he played on to fast bowler Josh Tongue.Rachin Ravindra made an attractive 33, with 24 runs in boundaries, before he was well caught by Bethell off Baker as the sun broke through initially grey skies in south London.The Black Caps were 188-5 soon after tea when Mitchell, to his evident frustration, holed out off Baker to end a 74-ball innings featuring six fours.New batsman Phillips, hit Baker for two boundaries off successive deliveries -- a short ball slapped over cover followed by a glorious drive through extra cover. BRIEF SCORESNew Zealand (1st Innings): 291/7 (Blundell 51, Mitchell 44, Phillips 44*; Bethell 2/8, Baker 2/63) vs ENgland

Root taking England captaincy on 'game by game' basis in Stokes' absence

Joe Root says he is taking the England captaincy on a "game-by-game basis" after replacing the exiled Ben Stokes for this week's second Test against New Zealand.With Stokes left out of the squad for the Oval clash after breaking a midnight curfew along with team-mate Gus Atkinson, Root agreed to skipper England for the first time since 2022.Stokes and Atkinson became embroiled in an incident at a London nightclub while celebrating England's first Test win against New Zealand, prompting reports the Durham all-rounder could be stripped of the captaincy or retire from international cricket.Root led England in a record 64 matches before being replaced by Stokes once the leadership role took a heavy toll on his form and peace of mind.England won just one of their last 17 Tests prior to Root stepping down as captain.The 35-year-old batsman believes he is in a "different place" now, making him confident he will be able to lift the mood around the England squad after a turbulent period."I never thought I'd be sat here talking to you guys as England captain again. Zero chance... 0.1 percent," he told reporters on Tuesday."The only thinking that came to my mind is what is the best thing for this team, is it going to have a big effect on me and my personal life and which outweighed the other. 'IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO TAKE THIS ON'"The fact is it felt like it was the right thing to take this on, so I tried to make it as simple as that. I think I am in a very different place to when I finished."To be captaining this group of players is a really exciting opportunity. It's a game-by-game basis, I think. Let's not look beyond this week."England head coach Brendon McCullum refused to be drawn on Stokes' status ahead of Wednesday's opening day of the second Test.Amid an England and Wales Cricket Board investigation into the late-night incident, McCullum on Monday said he was concerned about Stokes' well-being.Root, who is a close friend of the all-rounder, could lead England again in the third Test at Trent Bridge, which begins just three days after the scheduled finish at the Oval."I've spoken to him a number of times over the last week or so," Root said of Stokes. "We're close friends and I think they should stay as privileged conversations between me and him."When it comes to how Ben's feeling, how he is, I think they're all questions that he should be answering himself. I'm sure, at the right time and when he's ready, he will."Asked if Stokes could command the same authority after flouting a curfew he helped bring in, Root added: "I'm sure he has this respect of everyone in our dressing room. He's been a phenomenal leader for the last four years and the way he's captained been brilliant."He's a talismanic player and a great friend to a number of the guys, so of course there's a huge amount of respect there from everyone."

'Anger, disbelief and worry': Stokes saga overshadows England's revival

Ben Stokes' absence will cast a long shadow over England's bid to clinch a series victory against New Zealand when they face the Black Caps without their controversial captain this week.Stokes and Gus Atkinson were dropped for the second Test, which starts at the Oval on Wednesday, after the pair broke a midnight curfew by celebrating late into the night following England's series opening win at Lord's.The England and Wales Cricket Board are still investigating the incident in a London nightclub, which also involved Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa and reportedly ended with a member of the England's security staff being hit.Amid reports he could be stripped of the captaincy or even retire from international cricket, Stokes' England future has been plunged into doubt by the latest after-hours drama in his chaotic career.Stokes was cleared of charges of affray following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in 2017, but missed an Ashes tour as a result of that incident.The 35-year-old also took a break from cricket in 2021 to prioritise his mental health. ONE OF THE MOST DYNAMIC PLAYERSStokes is one of the most dynamic players of his generation, but his brilliance has been marred by a self-destructive streak.His failure to appreciate the significance of being on his best behaviour after England's shambolic Ashes tour last winter does not reflect well.England were routed 4-1 in Australia, with their off-field behaviour criticised after players were seen drinking during a day off in Noosa between matches.**media[458053]**Harry Brook was involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand prior to the Australia leg of the tour, adding to the impression that England's players are out of control.That incident made it impossible for vice-captain Brook to replace Stokes this week, forcing to England ask Joe Root, who last captained his country in 2022, to serve as stand-in skipper.Rob Key, managing director of men's cricket at the ECB, couldn't hide his frustration about England's latest indiscretion when he spoke last week. 'NO RASH DECISIONS'"It's still very raw, certainly for Ben, (England head coach) Brendon (McCullum), myself, the ECB. Ben has been through a range of emotions, as you would do in this situation," he said."A lot of people have had phone calls where you're just in disbelief, then you get angry. There's a load of things and I'm still not sure I'm over those at the moment."Time is probably the best thing for all of us. Nobody wants to make any rash decisions."McCullum refused to be drawn on Stokes' chances of retaining the captaincy, instead focusing on the well-being of the all-rounder."Our concern is with Ben, our concern is handling that situation, making sure we look after him, that he feels supported by us and in communication with us," he told reporters at a sombre press conference on Monday."I'm worried about Ben. I'll leave it at that. Those other things will work out down the line." NEW ZEALAND LOOK TO BOUNCE BACKNew Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra insisted England's travails mean nothing to his side as they look to bouncing back after a 115-run thrashing on a treacherous pitch in the first Test.The Black Caps are dealing with a surprise absence of their own after Kane Williamson abruptly retired from international cricket.The 35-year-old - New Zealand's all-time record run scorer across all formats - featured in the first Test but will play no further part in the three-match series."There's a few things going on. It's always interesting when you are the other team and you hear news like that," Ravindra said of England's issues."But honestly we are just focused on us. Whatever happens with them, we are focusing on our cricket."Tarnished by their exiled captain's lack of restraint, it will take some time for England to restore their reputation in the eyes of the cricket public.The long road to redemption starts at the Oval.

England coach McCullum 'worried' about Stokes after curfew incident

England head coach Brendon McCullum said he is "worried" about Ben Stokes after the captain was involved in a late-night incident that led to his absence from this week's second Test against New Zealand.Stokes will miss the clash at the Oval after breaching a midnight curfew while celebrating England's win over the Black Caps in the first Test at Lord's.The all-rounder and his England team-mate Gus Atkinson became embroiled in an incident involving Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa, prompting an internal investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board.There were suggestions that Stokes would resign or even retire in the immediate aftermath.But the 35-year-old's future remains shrouded in mystery ahead of the start of the second Test on Wednesday.Speaking on Monday, a sombre McCullum said he experienced a range of emotions from anger to concern when he learnt of Stokes' antics at a Chelsea nightspot.But McCullum insisted he has a duty of care for Stokes' well-being that over-rides disciplinary matters or the viability of his reign as skipper."When I first found out about it I was slightly bewildered, if I'm being honest. Then you go through a range of emotions. You go from being bewildered, on to angry, on to kind of gutted," he told reporters on Monday."But very quickly my overall emotion turned to worry and concern for Ben in particular."Since then it has been about how we support these guys, whilst not overlooking the fact they have not lived up to the standards we have set for ourselves."For me it's very much about how we support these guys through the next stage, in particular Ben. That is very much where my mind is at, my worry for him." NO WORD ON CAPTAINCYMcCullum refused to say whether he believes Stokes should remain as captain, after England were also criticised for their off-field behaviour during the tour to New Zealand and Australia."What will be will be, down the line. Those decisions are not for now. The concern is making sure Ben is fine," he said."We need to make sure we look after him, rally around him, and in time we'll get on to those sorts of decisions."For me I'm just making sure I'm checking in with him. That's where things sit at the moment."Stokes has trained with his English county Durham over recent days and could play against Northamptonshire on Friday.But McCullum took a deep breath before answering when quizzed on the wisdom of Stokes returning to action."I'm worried about Ben. That's it," he said. "I'll leave it at that."England are back in training for the first time since the incident and McCullum said he was encouraged by the atmosphere among the players."I was intrigued to see how the team was and I was quite happy to be honest. There was a calm," he said."Guys were still talking about last week, they touched on what had happened after."

England's Robinson in doubt for second Test due to knee injury

Ollie Robinson, whose player-of-the-match performance guided England to victory in the first Test against ‌New Zealand, is a doubt for the ‌second match due to a ‌knee injury, ‌the England and Wales ‌Cricket Board said on Saturday.The national body called up uncapped seamer Henry Crocombe as the 32-year-old's cover, in case he is unable to play the second Test, which begins at The Oval on Wednesday."Robinson experienced knee soreness after a training session on Friday and is set ‌to undergo a precautionary scan on Saturday," the ECB said in a statement.Robinson, playing his first Test in over two years, took seven wickets including five in the first innings as England won by 115 runs on a difficult wicket at Lord's. England will also be without ‌regular captain ‌Ben Stokes and bowler Gus Atkinson, who have been left out of the second of the three-test series following an investigation into an incident in a London nightclub.Jofra Archer and Jordan Cox have replaced the two in the squad.England squad Joe Root (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, James Rew, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith, ‌Josh Tongue.

Women's cricket showpiece can co-exist with football World Cup, says ICC chief

International Cricket Council chief executive Sanjog Gupta, insists the Women's T20 World Cup can "co-exist" with the football World Cup.England opened the cricket showpiece on home soil with an 87-run rout of Sri Lanka on Friday in front of 14,865 fans at Edgbaston.England's female football and rugby teams enjoyed public acclaim for their success at the European Championships and Rugby World Cup in recent years.But their cricketing counterparts are going for glory at a time when the sporting landscape is being dominated by the men's football World Cup in North America.Gupta says ticket sales for the three-week event reaching around 220,000 before a ball had been bowled, by far a tournament record, suggests the women's event can hold public interest."We genuinely see this event as a seminal moment for the sport," Gupta said. "I think the World Cups can co-exist. We've not seen any impact on ticket sales."If anything, the ticket sales have been stronger than ever, which is why we're at a point where we've sold more tickets than any previous edition of the Women's T20 World Cup."Our attendance numbers are tracking in the manner that we expected them to and the projections are for them to touch 300,000. If the weather holds up then we will have a fantastic tournament which will stand in its own right."We've seen tremendous acceleration in the growth of women's cricket to an extent where we now believe this event could potentially be one of the two biggest women's sporting events ever. It is not in any way being played in the shadow of the FIFA Men's World Cup."

Whole England squad must feel 'loved' at World Cup: Bellingham

Jude Bellingham says every member of England's World Cup squad must feel "loved" as he admitted things were not right off the pitch at Euro 2024.Gareth Southgate's men reached the final of the tournament in Germany, where they were beaten by Spain, but were unconvincing during their run.Southgate's successor, Thomas Tuchel, has spoken of creating a "brotherhood" in the squad as he tries to win England's first World Cup since 1966.Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham told England's Lions' Den show that things were "a little bit wrong off the pitch" at the Euros two years ago."I don't feel like the group connected as well as it could have for a number of reasons," he said.Bellingham suggested heightened expectations were a factor after strong performances in previous tournaments."We were seen as one of the two or three teams that should win it," said the 22-year-old."We weren't playing particularly well, which doesn't help. So even when we were winning it felt like you don't get the feeling that we were as happy as we should be."Because there has to be that element of relentlessness and you want to win. But the nature of football and especially at this level is that wins go out the system very quickly and I think we should have held on to that moment a little bit more."And I think this time around having those experiences, knowing that for example the guy who scores the goal in the World Cup final isn't always the one that you'd bet your house on."So everyone's got to be ready, everyone's got to feel loved, everyone's got to feel like they're playing a huge part of the team."England launch their bid for World Cup glory against Croatia next Wednesday in Arlington, Texas.Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, who could be competing with Bellingham for the number 10 position, underlined the unity in the squad in the United States."We're really together, we're really aligned and it's just really easy and seamless just to fit in with anyone in the group from wherever you're from, wherever you play, ages, that doesn't matter with our group," said the 23-year-old."We sit on one big table and we can have one big debate and everyone can get involved. That's kind of how it is and it's a joy to be here."

Vaughan backs Stokes to stay on as England captain

Michael Vaughan has backed Ben Stokes to retain the England captaincy despite being investigated for breaking the team's curfew. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced they were looking into Stokes' involvement in a nightclub incident on Monday morning following England's win in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's. England team-mate Gus Atkinson and Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa were also involved. Media reports on Tuesday suggested Stokes may resign as Test skipper.The second Test against New Zealand at the Oval gets under way in a week's time.But former England captain Vaughan said Stokes had sufficient "credit in the bank" to avoid being sacked."Yes, Ben Stokes broke a curfew," Vaughan wrote in the Daily Telegraph."Yes, he made a mistake. But is that a sacking offence as England's Test captain? I do not think so. 'STOKES HAS A LOT OF CREDIT IN THE BANK'"Stokes has a lot of credit in the bank for all he has done for England as captain and all-rounder. There is no way that those making the big decisions at the England and Wales Cricket Board have the same credit in the bank."I do not see how you can tell Stokes he is not captain anymore just for going over the curfew by a couple of hours after a win."He added: "A short suspension would be fine, but this is not a big enough incident over which to lose the captaincy."It is the latest controversy concerning the England team after the tour of Australia where the side faced allegations of a drinking culture during a 4-1 Ashes series loss.A physical confrontation with Auvaa is understood to have led to a member of ECB security staff being struck.If Stokes is stripped of the captaincy, vice-captain Harry Brook - already the skipper of England's white-ball teams - could lead the hosts next week.Brook was fined and censured for late-night drinking and clashing with a nightclub bouncer before captaining England in a one-day international in Wellington in October -- an incident that led to the midnight curfew.
