Qatar University (QU), the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), and Scale AI have signed an agreement to collaborate on the development of the National Co-Advisor Platform, an AI-powered solution designed to enhance academic advising and support student success at QU.The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve academic advising services through a unified digital platform that provides students and academic advisors with more efficient and flexible access to academic information and support, tailored to students' individual academic needs. The platform will combine an AI-powered interactive virtual assistant with advanced analytical tools that help advisors identify students who may require additional support, prepare for advising meetings, document outcomes, and follow up on required actions.The platform will provide students with 24/7 access to personalized academic guidance, including information on academic program requirements, university policies and regulations, course registration eligibility and prerequisites, academic deadlines, and progress towards graduation. For advisors, it will automate a number of administrative and documentation tasks, allowing them to dedicate more time to personalized guidance, meaningful student engagement, and proactive support.The initiative also seeks to strengthen early intervention by using academic data to identify indicators of academic difficulties and provide advisors with prioritized alerts and recommended interventions. In addition, the platform aims to reduce course registration errors that could affect student's academic progress or delay graduation. It will also provide university leadership with comprehensive insights and analytics to monitor academic progress and support data-driven decision-making.The National Co-Advisor Platform will be integrated with QU's relevant databases, providing academic advisors with a comprehensive digital workspace and students with a round-the-clock virtual assistant, while ensuring human oversight of administrative processes and decisions.Highlighting the importance of the collaboration, Dr. Shimaa Ali Al Quradaghi, Associate Vice President for Student Success and Development at QU's Student Affairs, said: "This partnership represents an important strategic step toward advancing academic advising at Qatar University and reflects our commitment to leveraging modern technologies and AI to enhance the student experience and promote academic success. Through this platform, we aim to provide more personalized and proactive academic guidance, while enabling academic advisors to focus on direct, meaningful student engagement. This will help identify students' needs earlier, support informed academic decisions, and ultimately strengthen their journey toward successful degree completion."Eman Al Kuwari, Director of Digital Innovation at MCIT said: "This collaboration reflects our focus on moving AI from potential to practical application by addressing real institutional needs. Through partnerships that bring together government, academia and technology providers, we aim to create an enabling environment for the responsible adoption of AI and the development of solutions that deliver measurable value. The National Co-Advisor Platform is a practical example of how AI can support more efficient and personalized services while maintaining human oversight as a core element of decision-making."Amr Samir, Qatar Country Lead at Scale AI, said, "This agreement is the result of months spent listening to Qatar University's advisors, faculty and staff. Together with MCIT and Qatar University, we are building the National Co-Advisor Platform to put AI to work for students and the advisors who guide them, with human oversight at its core, in service of Qatar National Vision 2030." The collaboration supports the objectives of QU's Strategy 2023-2027, particularly its focus on student centricity and digital transformation, while enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of academic support services. It also contributes to national priorities under the Third Qatar National Development Strategy by supporting the development of a highly skilled and productive workforce. 

Two Palestinian fishermen were injured Sunday when an Israeli drone dropped a bomb on them while they were fishing at sea off Al-Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City.Local sources reported that Israeli occupation forces continued demolishing homes and shelling various areas across the Gaza Strip.Israeli military vehicles opened fire on residents’ homes and tents sheltering displaced people east of Al-Tuffah and Al-Shujaiya neighborhoods, amid artillery shelling. An explosives-laden box dropped by an Israeli drone also detonated in Al-Shujaiya.Sources at Gaza hospitals reported Saturday that six Palestinians, including women and children, were martyred and dozens injured in Israeli strikes on various areas of the Gaza Strip.The ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel took effect in October 2025. However, Israeli occupation forces have continued to violate the agreement through airstrikes, artillery shelling and gunfire across various areas of the Gaza Strip. 

The Qatar Amateur Radio Society, in collaboration with the Qatar Scouts and Guides Association, participated Saturday in the JOTA-JOTI (Jamboree on the Air – Jamboree on the Internet) event. The annual global gathering brings together scouts and guides from around the world, enabling them to connect, exchange knowledge and experiences, and develop skills in communication, technology, and teamwork. The Society participated through a radio station established at its headquarters using the special event call sign “A71AJOTA”. Speaking on the occasion, the Society’s vice-president Dr Ahmed bin Hamad al-Mohannadi expressed the Society’s pride in collaborating with the Qatar Scouts and Guides Association to organise the event. He added that the Qatar Amateur Radio Society, established on June 17, 1991, continues to promote amateur radio, train young people, develop their scientific and technical capabilities, and strengthen co-operation with amateur radio organisations worldwide. He noted that Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) was launched in 1958, followed by the introduction of Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) activities in 1996. Together, they form a global platform that brings scouts and girl guides together to exchange knowledge and experiences while encouraging their interest in science and technology. He also thanked the Qatar Scouts and Guides Association – its leaders, supervisors, and participants – as well as members of the Qatar Amateur Radio Society for their efforts in organising the event and ensuring its success. He wished the participants a rewarding experience that would broaden their horizons and help them connect with peers around the world. JOTA is a global scouting event that enables Scouts to communicate through amateur radio stations and share ideas and scouting experiences. Held concurrently, JOTI allows participants to connect using Internet-based technologies, promoting mutual understanding and cultural exchange among young people while reinforcing the values of co-operation and belonging to the global scouting movement.

 Sri Lanka suffered a six-hour nationwide electricity blackout yesterday after the national grid tripped, possibly because solar power generation exceeded consumption, officials said.  The country was without grid power from around noon until dusk, when supplies were restored in stages across the island of 22mn people, the state electricity authority said.  Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka said the cause of the major breakdown was still under investigation, but engineers suspected an imbalance caused by high solar power generation while demand was muted on a weekend holiday.  The system was restored after authorities made repeated appeals to rooftop solar system owners to disconnect their systems to help stabilise the grid.  The entire grid shut down in February 2025, when solar power generation exceeded consumption on a bright, sunny Sunday. It took more than six hours to restore supplies at the time.Sri Lanka has an installed solar power capacity of just over 3,000MW, while daytime demand ranges from 2,000-2,500MW.  Tax concessions have encouraged consumers to switch to solar and sell their surplus electricity to the grid, creating imbalances that the utility provider is struggling to manage.  The government aims to increase solar power generation capacity to nearly 4,400 megawatts within three years, a 388% increase from 2024.  

Qatari Paralympic champion Abdulrahman Abdulqader carried the national flag at the Opening Ceremony of the 5th Asian Para Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 in Japan on Sunday. The ceremony was held at Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya, with athletes from 45 countries competing across 18 sports at the Games, which run until October 24. Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain, Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia for the Doha 2030 Asian Games and Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee, attended the ceremony. Dr. Ahmad Abdulla al-Buenain, CEO of the Doha 2030 Asian Games Organising Committee, was also present. Qatar has sent a 12-member delegation of male and female para-athletes competing in three sports: goalball, athletics and swimming. **media[505777]**Earlier, Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain met with Qatar’s athletes and Dr. Hassan al-Ansari, Secretary-General of the Qatar Sports Federation for People with Disabilities. Al-Buenain was briefed on the preparations as he praised the athletes’ efforts and determination to represent Qatar at the Asian Para Games.

Egypt opened their campaign in the U17 Gulf Cup Qatar 2026 with a 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia at Grand Hamad Stadium on Saturday. After a goalless first half, Mohamed Gamal broke the deadlock in the 54th minute before substitute Ziad Saudi doubled Egypt’s lead in the 80th minute. Ahmed Safwat added a third in the 85th minute, while Khaled Mahmoud scored in the 96th minute and Ahmed Bashir completed the rout in the 98th minute. Later at Saoud bin Abdulrahman Stadium, Yemen blanked Iraq 2-0. In the second round of Group B matches on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia will face Yemen at Hamad Bin Khalifa Stadium, while Egypt take on Kuwait at Saud Bin Abdulrahman Stadium. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. Organised by Qatar’s Local Organising Committee in coordination with the Gulf Football Federation, the tournament runs from October 16 to November 4, featuring 10 teams and 23 matches.

The Gulf Football Federation (GFF) Referees Committee has announced the match official appointments for the opening round of the second edition of the Gulf U-17 Cup Qatar 2026, which will take place in Qatar from 16 October to 4 November. The tournament will feature 10 national teams competing in 23 matches, making it the largest edition in the competition's history in terms of participating teams. The tournament is organised by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) in Qatar, in coordination with the Gulf Football Federation. Saudi referee Ali Mohammed Al Qahtani has been appointed to officiate the opening match between Qatar and China in Group A at Hamad Grand Stadium. He will be assisted by fellow Saudis Saad Al Shabrami and Mohammed Wazi, with Abdullah Zarban, also from Saudi Arabia, serving as the fourth official. Abdullah Al Balushi has been appointed as the referee assessor. Meanwhile, Kuwaiti referee Dawood Al Abdullah will take charge of the second Group A fixture between the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain at Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium. He will be assisted by compatriot Shafi Al Failakawi and Iraq's Shaker Adib, while fellow Iraqi Laith Sattam will serve as the fourth official. Abdulrahman Al Amri has been appointed as the referee assessor.

Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Sihasak Phuangketkeow signed Thursday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the GCC General Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.The MoU aims to bolster relations of friendship and cooperation between both sides and develop frameworks for dialogue and joint coordination, thereby contributing to elevating GCC-Thai relations towards broader horizons of partnership and cooperation across various fields of mutual interest.The GCC Secretary General emphasised that the signing of the MoU represents an important step towards enhancing relations between the GCC and Thailand. He affirmed that it reflects a shared desire to establish an institutional partnership founded on dialogue, mutual understanding, knowledge exchange, and exploring new avenues for cooperation, serving common interests and fulfilling the aspirations of both sides.The Secretary General explained that the MoU encompasses consultation and coordination on political and economic issues of mutual concern, fostering cultural cooperation and people-to-people ties, alongside the potential to expand areas of cooperation in the future and formulate a joint action plan to translate understandings into practical initiatives and programmes that advance bilateral relations.Albudaiwi underscored the importance of building upon this milestone to bolster the GCC-Thai partnership and intensify communication and coordination across various levels, thereby supporting mutual interests and contributing to reinforcing stability, prosperity, and sustainable development for both sides. 

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) marked World E-Waste Day yesterday, highlighting the importance of proper electronic waste management and encouraging the recycling of used electrical and electronic devices to protect the environment, preserve natural resources and support Qatar’s sustainable development efforts. The ministry’s participation in the annual occasion reflects its commitment to promoting responsible consumption, encouraging sustainable environmental practices and reducing the environmental impact of improper electronic waste disposal, amid rapid technological development and the growing use of electrical and electronic devices. The ministry also stressed that electronic waste is an environmental challenge that requires greater public awareness of safe, responsible disposal practices. Such waste may contain materials and components that can negatively affect the environment and human health if not handled and disposed of properly. Meanwhile, electronic waste offers an important opportunity to recover valuable materials and reuse them in industrial processes. This can reduce natural resource consumption, minimise waste volumes, improve material-use efficiency, and support the transition to a circular economy. In addition, the ministry offers a service to request the collection of electronic waste from homes, encouraging individuals to dispose of unused electronic devices responsibly and ensuring the waste reaches appropriate collection and treatment channels. Citizens and residents can access the service by submitting an online request through the designated website: https://environment.mecc.gov.qa/ewaste/ The service supports shared environmental responsibility and encourages community members to adopt sustainable practices when dealing with used electronic devices, rather than disposing of them with ordinary household waste. Accordingly, the ministry called on individuals and institutions to help reduce electronic waste by extending device lifespans, maintaining and repairing them whenever possible, reusing or donating those that remain functional, and handing damaged equipment to authorised collection and recycling entities. It also stressed the importance of avoiding the disposal of electronic devices and batteries with ordinary household waste, urging the public to follow safe practices that help reduce pollution and protect natural resources.
