A session of the Doha Forum 2025 held Saturday discussed defence policy, security, mediation in conflicts, and peacebuilding, under the title of "Iran and the Changing Regional Security Environment”.The session featured Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed al-Budaiwi, former Iranian foreign affairs minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and the director of Italy’s Institute of International Affairs Nathalie Tocci.The session was moderated by the executive vice-president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft in Washington, Dr Trita Parsi.The GCC secretary-general affirmed the council’s keenness on Iran’s stability and prosperity, stressing that no one in the GCC wished to see Iran collapse.Al-Budaiwi noted that the Gulf states had, over the past 7-8 decades, transformed into the world’s ninth-largest economy, with a collective GDP of about $2.4tn in 2024, and expressed the GCC’s desire to share these development experiences with Iran.He emphasised the need to respect the principles of good neighbourliness, adhere to the UN Charter, engage in dialogue, and refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other states.Al-Budaiwi added that the GCC’s expectations from Iran were simple and fundamental, similar to any normal relationship between neighbours.He highlighted that Iran embodies a rich civilisational, cultural, and artistic heritage, and stressed that the Gulf states have much to offer Iran, underlining the importance of focusing on a shared future.Zarif affirmed that Iran is capable of overcoming crises despite the challenges it had faced throughout history.He said that Iran had always been willing to engage in dialogue, referencing his 2017 proposal for a Regional Dialogue Forum (RDF) based on the UN Charter, good neighbourliness, non-interference, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.The former minister stressed the need to institutionalise the ongoing discussions between Iran and the GCC states and to build a shared vision for the future.Tocci warned of the growing risks facing the Gulf and Middle East regions, stating that the current situation requires practical steps to strengthen stability and build confidence among states.She stressed that external interventions had contributed to complicating the regional landscape, but were not the root cause of the problem, adding that the future lies in the hands of the regional states themselves rather than external powers.She underlined the need for commitment to dialogue, co-operation, and confidence-building through concrete actions. 

His Excellency the Minister of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal al-Thani met on Saturday with President of the World Economic Forum Borge Brende, on the sidelines of the Doha Forum 2025, reports QNA. The meeting discussed ways to enhance co-operation and partnership between the State of Qatar and the World Economic Forum, in addition to exchanging views on items on the forum's agenda. The two sides also reviewed Qatar's efforts in developing the business environment and strengthening the private sector's role, in addition to the economic policies that support trade, industry, and investment, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and its development objectives. 

His Excellency the Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali bin Issa al-Hassan al-Mohannadi met with Paraguay's Minister of the Supreme Court of Justice, Dr Alberto Martinez Simon, and Vice-Minister of Justice Juan Rafael Caballero Campos. Held on the sidelines of Doha Forum 2025, the meeting discussed advancing bilateral legal co-operation.

His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani affirmed that Qatar believes that justice is not merely a political aspiration, but a fundamental pillar for safeguarding international peace and entrenching stability.In his address at the opening session of the 23rd edition of the Doha Forum 2025, held Saturday, His Excellency stated that Qatar's policies are driven by a conviction that words must be matched by actions, that principles must guide practice, and that the country's international responsibilities must be upheld impartially and in service of humanity and human dignity.He added that, in line with this approach, Qatar continues to play an active mediating role-one of the cornerstones of its foreign policy-by initiating channels of dialogue, providing credible negotiation platforms, and facilitating understandings between disputing parties.His Excellency highlighted that Qatar's track record of successful mediation efforts, and the confidence the international community places in its role in achieving peace, demonstrate that mediation is neither a political luxury nor a utilitarian choice for Qatar, but a deeply rooted doctrine pursued with sincerity-grounded in the belief that genuine peacebuilding begins with inclusion rather than exclusion, and through expanding common ground rather than deepening division.He emphasized that this approach was clearly reflected in the achievement reached on Friday, as Qatar, in cooperation with its partners Norway, Spain, and Switzerland, succeeded in securing a significant breakthrough between the Government of Colombia and the self-designated "EGC" group. The agreement, he noted, offers a genuine opportunity to enhance the safety and dignity of Colombians and to provide conflict-affected communities with a tangible glimmer of hope after years of violence.His Excellency explained that the agreement also opens the door to an organized political process aimed at disarmament, combating the production and trafficking of narcotics, and building sustainable peace within an agreed framework capable of restoring stability to conflict-stricken areas.He stressed that this progress reaffirms that sincere and responsible mediation can protect civilians and pave the way for a peace grounded in responsibility, trust, and the commitment of all parties to what best serves their peoples.His Excellency underscored that the world does not need more promises; but rather justice practiced by all without double standards, responsibility borne collectively without favoritism, and courage that transforms words into action.Highlighting the role of the forum, he noted that the Doha Forum stands as a leading global platform bringing together policymakers, thought leaders, and experts from across the world, serving as an influential space for dialogue on major global challenges and the formulation of practical solutions.He stated that this year's theme -Justice in Action: Beyond Promises to Progress- captures a reality evident to all: that the divide between stated commitments and actual implementation is growing, and that justice is increasingly absent from the workings of international law in a world where interests overshadow principles and force supplants legal norms.His Excellency warned that the world is witnessing an unprecedented escalation of crises-not due to a lack of resources or knowledge, but due to the absence of accountability and the continuation of conflicts without just solutions, posing a direct threat to international peace and security.He pointed out that when crises are managed through the logic of force rather than law, and when aggressors evade accountability, the international order begins to resemble a system built on promises that remain unfulfilled.He further noted that successive tensions have revealed that crisis management at its bare minimum, or the preservation of temporary international consensus without addressing root causes, is no longer a viable option. Crises that are not resolved through fair and lasting solutions inevitably return more complex, extending beyond their borders; temporary agreements do not halt the movement of history but merely postpone its obligations.In this regard, he stressed that only just solutions can build sustainable peace and prevent the perpetuation of conflict and division.His Excellency warned that the absence of accountability remains one of the gravest flaws in the international system-manifest in the region through the plight of the Palestinian people under flagrant violations of international law, and the tragedies unfolding in Sudan, including massacres and grave abuses. These all underscore that achieving justice and protecting rights are indispensable conditions for preserving regional stability and preventing fragmentation.Speaking on Syria, His Excellency stated that after harsh years marked by the absence of justice, the Syrian people are moving on a path they hope will lead to recovery-within a framework of transitional justice that reinforces cohesion and rejects sectarianism, paving the way for a peace that turns the page on the past and is rooted in participation and justice.He noted that the challenges facing the region are intertwined with global trends characterized by a serious erosion of respect for international law, the excessive use of force without accountability, and the weakening of international institutions. These factors, he said, are creating a global environment marked by rising risks and diminishing public trust in the world order.In this context, he affirmed that the world today must rebuild confidence in legal norms, establish a fairer international order, and strengthen the role of communities and humanitarian organizations as genuine partners in shaping a more stable and inclusive future. Durable peace, he stressed, cannot be achieved through symbolic resolutions but through collective action that places human dignity at the centre of all policymaking.Concluding his address, His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his hope that the Doha Forum will serve as a platform for deepening cooperation among governments, communities, and humanitarian organizations in pursuit of a more just and secure future for all humanity.

Hosts Qatar were left clinging to their FIFA Arab Cup hopes after a stunning 90th-minute equaliser from Syria’s Omar Khribin sealed a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Khalifa International Stadium last night, a result that leaves Julen Lopetegui’s side needing victory in their final Group A match against Tunisia, and possibly help elsewhere, to reach the knockout stages.The draw came on a night of high drama, with Palestine also striking late to earn a 2-2 comeback against Tunisia and move to the brink of the last eight. The back-to-back thrillers leave Group A delicately poised.With only a match left to play in the group stage, Qatar’s fate is no longer in their own hands. Palestine and Syria lead the group and both need only a draw in their final matches to qualify. Qatar must beat Tunisia in their last group game to have any chance of progressing.Even with victory, Qatar may still need: Syria to lose to Palestine, or a favourable swing in goal difference if Syria draw and Qatar win big. A draw or defeat for Qatar will eliminate the hosts. It leaves Lopetegui under mounting pressure, as Qatar attempt to avoid a second straight early exit from their home tournament.Syria again showcased their grit on the big stage, with Khribin’s spectacular long-range rocket earning them a point and silencing the capacity crowd inside Khalifa International Stadium.Qatar had produced their strongest spell of the tournament after the break. Ahmed al-Aaedin rose high to head in Edmilson Junior’s cross in the 77th minute, giving the hosts hope of igniting their campaign after an opening loss to Palestine.But Syria, who had threatened through Khribin earlier, including a chipped effort heroically cleared off the line by Mohammed Waad, refused to wilt. Deep into the 90th minute, Khribin unleashed a fierce strike into the top corner, a goal worthy of any stage, leaving Lopetegui’s men devastated.Earlier, Palestine rescued a vital late point to keep their historic knockout push on track at the Lusail Stadium. Goals from Hamed Hamdan and a composed 85th-minute finish by Zaid Qunbar, who was named player of the match, earned them a deserved 2–2 draw after Tunisia had led through Amor Layouni and Firas Chaouat.Roared on by a 45,000-strong crowd, Tunisia responded to their opening defeat against Syria with an assertive first hour. A deflected corner allowed Layouni to tap home the opener before Chaouat doubled the lead soon after the break, sweeping in after Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane powered through midfield.But Palestine rallied superbly. Hamdan’s rasping volley dragged them back into the contest, and Qunbar’s late strike, drilled through two defenders, sent their bench into wild celebrations as they edged closer to their first-ever Arab Cup knockout appearance.
