Qatar Museums (QM), through its International Co-operation and Government Affairs Department and in collaboration with the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science and the Unesco Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen, has launched the “Conventions: 101” Workshop Series 2026 at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.  Taking place on October 13, 14 and 29, the three-day series aims to introduce young professionals and university students to Unesco’s cultural conventions and their pivotal role in protecting heritage.  The initiative coincides with celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Unesco Regional Office in Doha, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening cultural co-operation and developing the next generation of heritage professionals.  The event opened with a session featuring welcoming remarks by Director of International Co-operation and Government Affairs at QM, Dr Fatima Hassan al-Sulaiti, who spoke as the organizer and on behalf of QM, and HE Acting Director of the Unesco Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen and Head of its Social and Human Sciences Sector Amina al-Hamshari.  It also included recorded keynote remarks by Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to Unesco and President of the organisation’s Executive Board, Dr Nasser al-Henzab.  As part of its comprehensive programme, the series comprises three specialized workshops focusing on the protection of cultural property, World Heritage and intangible cultural heritage. Through practical case studies, simulations, debates and interactive group activities, participants will explore the role of international frameworks in guiding efforts to preserve cultural heritage and how these frameworks can be applied in real-world contexts.  In this context, al-Sulaiti said she is proud to launch the ‘Conventions: 101’ Workshop Series as part of Tamkeen, an initiative launched by QM’s International Co-operation and Government Affairs Department, as part of its continued efforts to deepen knowledge and build capacity in culture and heritage.  She affirmed that, in developing the series, the aim was to create a practical and accessible platform that brings Unesco’s cultural conventions closer to young professionals and students, helping them understand how they can be applied in practice.  Al-Sulaiti also reaffirmed the commitment, through Tamkeen, to creating unique opportunities for young people in Qatar and across the Arab region to learn, exchange experiences and build the skills needed to contribute to safeguarding our shared cultural heritage.  For his part, Director of the Unesco Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen in Doha, Salah Khalid, highlighted the significance of the partnership, saying that as the Regional Office marks 50 years in Qatar, this series highlights the strength of its strategic partnership with QM and Qatar’s commitment to translating Unesco’s conventions into practical initiatives that safeguard heritage and support sustainable development.  He noted that Unesco believes the future of cultural heritage depends on younger generations’ ability to understand, safeguard and develop it.Salah Khalid also highlighted that the initiative strengthens awareness of Unesco’s cultural conventions and equips young professionals in Qatar and across the region with the skills needed to protect and manage heritage for future generations.  The workshops are conducted in Arabic. In-person participation is available to residents of Qatar, subject to available places, while those interested across the Arab region can participate online through a live broadcast.  Outstanding participants from Qatar and the wider region will be selected to take part in the 2027 Youth Empowerment Forum in Doha, extending opportunities for learning, exchange and professional development.  The series forms part of the “Empowering Arab Youth for Sustainable Heritage” programme, launched by the department in 2025 to empower Arab youth in culture, heritage and creativity.Tamkeen seeks to connect theory with practice by combining academic learning, practical training, field visits and direct engagement with experts and leading institutions in Qatar, while supporting regional collaboration and professional networks. 

Crafting Design Futures residency, developed by Design Doha as part of the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, joined Design Week Mexico’s Visión y Tradición programme, bringing four designers from Qatar and the wider Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region into collaboration with Mexican master artisans.  Open at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City until November 1, 2026, Visión y Tradición forms part of Design Week Mexico 2026 (DWM26), developed this year around the theme “Perspectives from the Global South.” The programme brings together international designers with Mexican creators, placing exchange, shared making and different forms of creative knowledge at the centre of the exhibition.  Through Crafting Design Futures, four collaborations explored glass engraving, clay, ceramics and hand-hammered copper. Syrian designer Kenan Alkuwatly worked with master engraver José Cruz; Lebanese designer and multidisciplinary artist Shirine Sbaiti with ceramic artisans Norberto y Rosi; Qatar-based Iranian designer Yasamin Shaikhi with Estudio Guerrero; and British-Indian architect and designer Armaan Bansal with Alan Pureco’s family workshop.  The residency encouraged each pair to develop the work together. Initial ideas changed through the process of making as designers encountered techniques, materials and knowledge built through years, and in some cases generations, of practice. The resulting objects reflect not only the designers’ original concepts, but the creative contribution of the artisans and the conversations between them.  Fahad al-Obaidly, Director of Design Doha, said: “One of the most important lessons of Crafting Design Futures is that craft is not simply a means of producing a designer’s idea. It is knowledge in its own right. We ask our designers to enter these workshops ready to listen and to allow the artisan’s experience to change their thinking and ultimately the object itself. That requires time, which is perhaps one of the greatest luxuries we have today. In a world where design is increasingly shaped by digital tools and speed, working directly with materials and with people who have spent decades understanding them gives designers a very different perspective on value, authorship and collaboration. It also teaches a more responsible way of working with craft communities by building something together.”  This approach is reflected across several Years of Culture programmes taking place in Doha this fall, marking a key moment in the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture. The programme highlights a shared interest in how traditional knowledge can inform contemporary creative practice, particularly as Qatar continues to invest in preserving its own heritage while developing its creative and design sectors.  Expanded Tradition, curated by Ana Elena Mallet and opening at M7 on 27 October, brings together makers from across Mexico who are reinterpreting inherited techniques through contemporary practice, from silver filigree and natural dyes to textiles and lacquerware. Acclaimed chef Elena Reygadas brings Panadería Rosetta to the Doha Design District, accompanied by Perla Valtierra’s handmade ceramics.  The programme continues with Fernando Laposse’s The Sower, opening during the Design Doha Biennale, connecting Mexican and Qatari traditions through a wider exploration of ways traditional knowledge can inspire new creative possibilities. 

Al Sadd have signed Qatar international striker Mohammed Muntari from Al Gharafa on a two-year contract as the reigning Qatar Stars League champions look to strengthen their attacking options. The club announced the signing of the 32-year-old through its official account on X.Muntari joined Al Jaish in 2012 before moving to Al Duhail. He also had a loan spell at Al Ahli in 2018 before joining Al Gharafa ahead of the 2024-25 season. He made 29 appearances for Al Gharafa, scoring six goals.At international level, Muntari made his Qatar debut in 2014 and has since earned 70 caps, scoring 16 goals. He scored Qatar’s only goal at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, finding the net against Senegal. He was also part of Qatar’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.Muntari’s arrival comes as Al Sadd seek to regain their winning form after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Al Arabi in the last round, their first loss of the league campaign. The result saw them surrender the top spot and drop to second with 12 points, one behind leaders Al Rayyan.Al Sadd will face Al Duhail at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Sunday as they look to get their title defence back on track.The Wolves are also seeking to revive their AFC Champions League Elite campaign after losing their opening two matches against Iran’s Esteghlal and Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal. 

 The Local Organising Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, in collaboration with the Qatar School Sports Federation (QSSF), announced on Thursday the group allocations for the new season of the Mini World Cup, which will bring together 32 schools in a competition designed to broaden student participation in basketball and strengthen their connection with the highly anticipated global event.The announcement was made at a press conference, attended by Abdulla al-Mawlawi, Executive Director of the Communications and Guest Relations Committee at the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Local Organising Committee; Predrag Bogosavljev, Director of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027; and Abdulrahman al-Muftah, Executive Director of the School Olympic Program, alongside representatives of participating schools.The group allocations were determined based on the final standings from the inaugural edition, held during the 2025–2026 academic year, with schools ranked from first to 32nd place. The draw also gave schools the opportunity to select the countries they would represent, creating an experience inspired by international basketball competitions and enabling students to explore the sport from both an athletic and cultural perspective.The initiative combines sporting competition with learning, encouraging students to play basketball, develop teamwork and embrace the values of respect, sportsmanship and intercultural understanding.On the occasion, al-Mawlawi said the tournament offers school students a valuable opportunity to experience healthy competition, promote sportsmanship and foster intercultural understanding, contributing to the wider development of basketball among younger generations.He noted that the partnership with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the Qatar School Sports Federation advances the tournament’s sporting and community goals, reinforces basketball’s presence in schools and creates opportunities to discover emerging talent.He also thanked the partners and local media for their outstanding efforts and instrumental role in supporting the FIBA World Cup Qatar 2027 and its promotional initiatives.Bogosavljev said: “Whenever we host a sporting event, we must ensure that we leave a lasting legacy that extends beyond the conclusion of the event itself. We look forward to educating families and younger generations about basketball, its rich heritage and our future aspirations for the sport.”Al-Muftah, Executive Director of the School Olympic Program, said the tournament brings together sport and learning, introducing students to the heritage of basketball in Qatar and around the world. He added that representing different countries provides participants with an opportunity for cultural exchange and strengthens their connection with the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.Al-Muftah explained that the initiative is exclusively for boys and offers them the opportunity to experience a simulated version of the Basketball World Cup. He thanked the partners involved in organizing the mini tournament, particularly the participating schools and teams, for their contributions to the initiative’s success.The new season of the Mini World Cup will also feature interactive activities designed to familiarize the school community with preparations for hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, while encouraging greater participation in basketball and raising awareness of the sport’s cultural dimensions.

His Excellency the Director-General of Qatar News Agency (QNA) Ahmed bin Saeed al-Rumaihi met Thursday with ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the State of Qatar Cao Xiaolin. The meeting discussed ways to enhance joint co-operation between the two countries in the field of media. 

The State of Qatar is participating in the meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors from the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAP) Region.The meeting is being held on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG), taking place from October 12 to 18 in Bangkok, the Kingdom of Thailand.Qatar is represented at the meeting by His Excellency the Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari and His Excellency the Governor of the Qatar Central Bank Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani.Chaired by Managing Director of IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, and attended by several finance ministers and central bank governors from MENAP, the meeting explored key strategic issues, economic growth in the region, future prospects, and the requirements for anti-inflation financial policies.In addition, the gathering discussed sustainable financing strategies, efforts to spur economic growth, and support for innovation in financial sector development.

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE), through its Administration of Private Schools and Kindergartens and School Licensing Department, has held a recognition ceremony to honor 207 private schools and kindergartens under its "my white flag" shield initiative, including 63 institutions that earned the trophy, the initiative's third and highest level.The trophy recognizes private schools and kindergartens that have maintained clean records, free of violations and official warnings, for three consecutive years, demonstrating compliance and excellence.Addressing the ceremony, Director of the Ministry's Private Schools and Kindergartens Department and Acting Director of its Private Schools Licensing Department, Dr. Rania Yousry Mohamed, said the event marked the completion of the shield's first cycle and the recognition of the first cohort of private schools and kindergartens. Of the institutions honored, 63 received the trophy, 45 received the shield, and another 99 were awarded certificates of appreciation, Dr. Mohamed said.She highlighted the increase in the number of private educational institutions honored this year, eloquently pointing to growing institutional awareness. The total reached 207 institutions, comprising 126 schools and 81 kindergartens, compared with 166 institutions last year.Dr. Mohamed further noted that the shield initiative was launched to promote institutional excellence and recognize schools and kindergartens that make compliance with laws and regulations an integral part of their daily culture, suggesting that these institutions translate that commitment into a safe and stable learning environment, a positive relationship with parents, and responsible cooperation with the Ministry.The shield's criteria are clearly defined, Dr. Mohamed said, explaining that they include maintaining a clean record free of violations and warnings throughout the academic year, having no substantiated complaints against the school or kindergarten, ensuring accuracy in dealings and responsiveness, and maintaining a positive relationship with families.She elaborated that the shield's three tiers were designed to reflect sustained compliance: a certificate of appreciation in the first year, the shield in the second year, and the trophy in the third year, provided the institutions continued to meet the established criteria.The official noted that the spike in the number of institutions honored this year came despite stricter eligibility criteria and the inclusion of licensing-related warnings among the shield's criteria. This, she said, underscored the seriousness with which schools and kindergartens are working to improve their practices and meet the requirements governing their operations.Dr. Mohamed emphasized that this progress is an outgrowth of the continuous partnership between MOEHE and the education sector, grounded in clarity of expectations, support, and follow-up to foster an educational environment worthy of the community's trust.She also expressed gratitude for the efforts of school license holders, school leaders, administrative and educational teams, and the Ministry's working committees in deepening commitment and upholding the criteria.Overall, the "My White Flag" shield reflects the Ministry's steadfast efforts to elevate administrative and educational awareness and encourage private educational institutions to operate according to the highest standards of quality, transparency, and governance. 

Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to balancing economic development with environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources, as the country marked Arab Environment Day on Wednesday.HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie said stronger Arab cooperation was essential to addressing environmental challenges and achieving sustainable development while safeguarding the rights of future generations.In a statement marking the annual occasion on October 14, HE Al Subaie said Arab Environment Day provided an opportunity to strengthen joint regional efforts and promote sustainability as a shared responsibility.HE Eng. Abdulaziz Al Mahmoud, the ministry's assistant undersecretary, said the ministry was continuing to develop Qatar's environmental management system through enhanced monitoring and inspection, more efficient management of natural resources, and support for sustainable initiatives and practices.Meanwhile, HE Assistant Undersecretary for Climate Change Affairs Ahmed Al Sada highlighted the importance of strengthening national adaptation efforts and developing innovative solutions to address climate change. He said these efforts would help improve Qatar's resilience to climate-related challenges and support a more sustainable future for coming generations.Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves Dr Ibrahim Al Maslamani said protecting biodiversity and natural habitats remained central to environmental conservation.He highlighted the ministry's work in managing nature reserves, protecting wildlife and restoring ecosystems to preserve Qatar's natural heritage.For his part, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs Yousef Al Hamar said environmental prevention and oversight were key to protecting both the environment and public health.He said the ministry was strengthening monitoring, inspection and regulatory enforcement, including the application of environmental requirements, to reduce pollution and improve compliance.The ministry said environmental protection required coordinated efforts by government institutions and the wider community, alongside greater public awareness and the adoption of sustainable practices.It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting natural resources and biodiversity, strengthening environmental monitoring and adapting to climate change.The initiatives support the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030, which seeks to advance sustainable development while preserving resources for present and future generations.

Qatar Leadership Centre will host the third edition of its Leadership Innovation Forum on October 28, focusing on how strategic planning can help institutions sustain their performance beyond changes in leadership.The forum will be held under the patronage of HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, chairperson of the center's board, and will bring together leaders, experts and specialists from various sectors.The event will explore how organizations can establish long-term strategies, develop future leaders and build systems that ensure continuity as leadership changes.Speaking at a press conference, Ali Ahmed Al Kuwari, the center's public relations director, said the forum would provide a platform for dialogue and the exchange of expertise on leadership challenges and the demands facing institutions in the coming years.He said effective leadership was not limited to achievements during an individual's tenure, but also involved building organizations capable of maintaining progress and delivering results after a leader's departure.Al Kuwari added that institutional sustainability depended on clear strategic direction rather than simply accelerating the implementation of initiatives. He highlighted the importance of long-term planning, developing talent, applying knowledge and preparing the next generation of leaders.The forum also aims to promote the concept of leadership legacy, focusing on the systems, capabilities and organizational practices leaders leave behind to enable their successors to continue developing their institutions.Al Kuwari said the center wanted the forum's outcomes to extend beyond theoretical discussions and produce practical ideas for workplaces, particularly in strategic priority-setting, talent development, governance and leadership succession.The third edition builds on discussions at the previous two forums. The 2024 edition focused on leadership innovation, while the 2025 forum examined decision-making.This year's event will address the institutional legacy leaders leave behind and how organizations can continue to achieve their objectives beyond individual tenures.Professor Steven Wright, director of the Leadership Knowledgebase Department, said the forum would examine what enables institutions to remain successful after their founders and leaders leave.He said Qatar's experience in building national institutions offered examples that could inform discussions on sustainability, governance and organizational culture.The program will include workshops on strategic leadership for graduates of Qatar Leadership Center, alongside discussions on the characteristics of exceptional leadership and the practices that enable institutions to maintain their objectives through leadership transitions.The forum brings together graduates of the center and professionals from government, public and private sector organizations to exchange experiences and explore approaches to strengthening institutional effectiveness and resilience.
