Baladna aims to capture at least a 20% market share in Syria as the dairy producer advances its international expansion plans using proceeds from its capital increase, according to independent board member Nasser Hassan al-Ansari.Speaking on the sidelines of the Ring the Bell ceremony hosted by the Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) yesterday to mark Baladna’s completion of its capital increase through a rights issue, al-Ansari said the company incorporated Baladna Syria to build an operational footprint matching the scale and productivity of its main operations in Qatar.“We are expanding in Syria and Algeria. In Algeria, we have a huge project, and in Syria, we are already distributing our product in the market to test consumer appetite,” al-Ansari said.He noted that managing large-scale international ventures requires strict operational discipline to safeguard shareholder returns.“These two international projects are very big, so they require substantial attention to detail so that we deliver profitability for our investors,” he explained.Alongside cross-border expansion, Baladna is broadening its domestic product range, adding ice cream to its portfolio through ongoing product development, according to al-Ansari.“We have an R&D department that constantly conducts research to deliver better products, keeping us in the top tier of competitors while meeting consumer expectations across different price points,” al-Ansari added.

The shift toward smart agriculture has become an increasingly important requirement to strengthen food security, improve production efficiency, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the country's agricultural sector, several specialists and farm owners have stressed.They said technologies such as controlled-environment greenhouses, hydroponics, vertical farming, automated irrigation, and artificial intelligence can help farmers produce more on limited land while using less water, energy, fertiliser, and pesticides. These technologies can provide more predictable production cycles, allowing farms to plan output around market demand and supply fresh local produce year-round. The push comes as Qatar places greater emphasis on sustainable domestic production under its National Food Security Strategy 2030, launched in December 2024.The strategy identifies increased domestic production through modern and sustainable technologies as one of its three main pillars, alongside strategic reserves and diversification of external food sources. The country has been developing precision-agriculture solutions designed to give farmers access to technology that improves growing conditions, reduces operational costs and utility consumption, and provides government agencies with consolidated data for crop planning and food-security contingency planning.Dr Rashid al-Kuwari, a businessman specialising in the agricultural sector, said smart farms are important for ensuring the long-term stability of both production costs and crop quality. The model requires suitable farm infrastructure and the adoption of smart systems, including artificial intelligence that can monitor crop quality, growth periods, and temperature while identifying areas where resources can be conserved. Further, remote production-monitoring systems and AI can allow farmers to adjust agricultural inputs in real time, reducing the use of water, fertilisers and pesticides. Such systems can also generate reliable production data, helping farmers plan output more accurately and policymakers assess domestic production and food-security levels. He noted that better production planning would allow local farms to respond more closely to market requirements, improve the balance between domestic and imported products and contribute to greater price stability for consumers.However, he cited the high initial investment cost, relatively narrow profit margins in the local market and the limited availability of specialised infrastructure and technical service providers as major obstacles to wider adoption.Abdullah Mohamed al-Kaabi, Executive Director of a farm, said the need to adopt smart-farming systems in Qatar has become increasingly urgent, pointing to his farm's experience as evidence of their ability to improve resource efficiency and reduce operating costs. His farm operates more than 15 greenhouses, some combining conventional and modern approaches, while a significant proportion of its production relies on vertical towers and hydroponic systems. The farm also produces a range of crops, including cucumbers, tomatoes, and leafy vegetables, most of which are grown hydroponically. These systems increase productivity, reduce water losses, and allow the farm to maintain more consistent production.Al-Kaabi said adopting smart farming solutions would maintain more consistent quality and availability year-round, with the potential for greater retail price stability over the medium and long term.Meanwhile, government-backed agricultural initiatives have highlighted greenhouse farming's ability to increase production, conserve water, and provide vegetables year-round.Abdulrahman al-Obaidan, a farm owner, described smart farming as an essential step for Qatar's agricultural sector, especially given the country's limited water and energy resources. He said reducing waste in water, energy, and fertiliser is central to lowering production costs and ensuring farms remain profitable. Smart systems can also increase output per square metre, allowing farmers to supply fresh, consistent local produce while reducing dependence on imported products. The combination of greenhouses, hydroponics and vertical farming can transform agricultural production from a vulnerable seasonal model into a more continuous, year-round system.He underlined the potential of indoor farming using artificial lighting, which can give producers greater control over planting, harvesting and delivery schedules and enable them to respond more precisely to consumer demand. Moreover, failing to expand smart agriculture carries its own economic cost through excessive water consumption, crop losses, declining farm profitability, and weaker competitiveness for local producers.The National Food Security Strategy 2030 seeks to increase domestic production through modern technologies, improve agricultural land productivity, and strengthen the resilience of food supply chains. 

Hamad Medical Corporation will hold an awareness event on Thursday to mark World Alzheimer's Month and raise awareness of early diagnosis and support for people living with dementia. An HMC press statement said the event will take place at Al Rumailah Hospital from 08:00 to 13:00 and will give members of the public an opportunity to meet a multidisciplinary medical team and learn about services available to patients with Alzheimer's disease. This year's campaign is being held under the global theme, "The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters." Information stands will cover dementia, brain health, early diagnosis and potentially modifiable risk factors, while members of HMC's multidisciplinary dementia care team will be available to answer questions. A further public exhibition will be held on September 21 to mark World Alzheimer's Day. The statement highlighted the services provided by HMC's Memory Clinics and multidisciplinary teams that include specialist assessment, diagnosis and care for people experiencing memory changes and dementia. Assessments include medical and cognitive evaluations, along with investigations to identify the causes of symptoms and develop an appropriate care plan. Professor Hanadi Al Hamad, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Long-Term Care, Rehabilitation and Geriatrics and Medical Director of Rumailah Hospital, said early diagnosis was important to ensure patients and their families receive appropriate assessment, care and support in a timely manner. She also highlighted the importance of brain health and reducing modifiable risk factors to help lower the risk of dementia and maintain cognitive abilities and independence for as long as possible. Where clinically appropriate, advanced biological investigations and disease-modifying biological treatments may be considered for carefully selected patients who meet established eligibility criteria, following specialist assessment and an individual risk-benefit evaluation. HMC's RAHA Alzheimer's and Memory Services Helpline is available on 4026 2222, from Sunday to Thursday, 08:00 to 15:00, providing information and support to people and families throughout their dementia care journey. HMC has advised people to support brain health by staying physically active, maintaining a healthy diet and weight, managing blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, avoiding smoking, and remaining mentally and socially active. It also recommends seeking medical advice for persistent changes in memory or thinking, as early assessment can help identify the underlying cause and ensure appropriate care and support. 

The State of Qatar took part on Monday in a meeting of senior prosecutors from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to discuss further judicial cooperation.The 17th meeting of Their Excellencies GCC assistant attorneys general and prosecutors was held virtually and discussed rules for using AI in public prosecution work, the formation of a Gulf-wide joint investigation teams and mechanisms for cooperation among GCC prosecution authorities.Participants further examined unified models for international cooperation among the public prosecution and prosecution authorities of GCC member states.Qatar was represented by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maliki, First Attorney General and Director of the Judicial Inspection Department, along with several Public Prosecution officials.The discussions are part of preparations for the 18th meeting of Their Excellencies GCC Attorneys General and Prosecutors, which is due to be held in October.  

His Excellency Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah has held talks with representatives of Chinese companies on agriculture, public services and construction.The meetings took place in Beijing as part of the minister's current visit to China. He was briefed on the latest technologies in the three sectors, including smart systems designed to improve efficiency and service quality, as well as robots used for cleaning and other public services.The talks also explored opportunities for cooperation, knowledge-sharing and the use of advanced technologies to develop Qatar's municipal services and improve operational efficiency and sustainability.

Mowasalat’s (Karwa) “RoboTaxi” has been offering test rides to participants and visitors of the 2nd Autonomous e-Mobility Forum, which was opened today by Ministry of Transport Undersecretary Mohammed Abdullah al-Maadeed. Engineer Ahmad Ali al-Ansari, the event’s executive committee chairperson, said the two-day forum being held at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) has grown significantly, attracting a wide range of participants from across the region’s private and public sectors. Global firm Pony.ai, which is providing the technology for the RoboTaxi, specialises in the mass production and commercialisation of autonomous driving. The company leverages its “Virtual Driver” and “Pony World” as its core, utilising extensive road test data and repeated training with its World Model to enable the vehicle to handle a variety of scenarios that are both highly challenging and of high commercial value. Watch it here  

Qatar Chamber’s Industry Committee and the Economic Zones Company (Manateq) held a meeting yesterday to discuss ways to strengthen ties that support the country’s industrial sector and improve the business environment for investors. Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani and Manateq CEO Khalid bin Ahmad al-Obaidli convened the meeting in the presence of board officials and committee members, alongside Manateq’s executive management team. The meeting also addressed various challenges and issues related to the industrial sector, particularly those directly related to Manateq, as well as ways to enhance communication between the chamber and Manateq to help address obstacles facing industrial investors. Sheikh Khalifa affirmed Qatar Chamber’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Manateq and gaining further insight into plans for industrial and logistics zones and their role in supporting the growth of Qatar’s industrial sector. He noted that their next meeting will be held at Manateq’s headquarters to continue discussions on a number of topics related to the industrial sector and investors’ needs. Al-Obaidli said the meeting aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing industrial investors and explore ways to address them. He highlighted Manateq’s commitment to working closely with its partners and relevant stakeholders to contribute to creating a business environment that supports the growth and sustainability of investors’ businesses, while serving as a genuine partner to the private sector. He said Manateq continues to facilitate the investor journey and enhance the overall investor experience through its Business Services Centre and digital channels, enabling investors to access services and track their transactions conveniently through the Partners Portal or the Manateq mobile app. Participants of the meeting also raised several important topics related to the industrial sector, including the need for clearer classification between factories and workshops, the provision of liquefied natural gas to small and medium-sized industries (SMEs), the provision of affordable worker accommodation and transportation within industrial zones, a proposal to establish a higher industrial council, and the development of road infrastructure serving industrial zones. Both parties emphasised the importance of maintaining continuous coordination and communication with investors and relevant stakeholders. They also agreed to follow up on the discussed topics in a way that supports the ongoing development of the business environment and enhances the competitiveness of Qatar's industrial sector. 

 Trade between Uzbekistan and Qatar increased by more than 30% in 2025 as the bilateral ties between both the countries are progressing very well, said the ambassador of Uzbekistan, Dr Ashraf Khodjaev. Khodjaev was interacting with the media yesterday on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Uzebkistan's independence, highlighting the strategic partnership between both the countries. “The partnership has continued to gain momentum. In 2025, trade between Uzbekistan and Qatar increased by more than 30%, while Uzbekistan's exports to Qatar grew by more than 36%,” said the ambassador.Khodjaev noted that in 2026, both the countries have continued to develop projects in energy, transport and logistics, infrastructure, industry, agriculture, tourism, education and finance. “Qatari companies and institutions are increasingly exploring investment opportunities in Uzbekistan, while both countries are working to expand trade and establish new mechanisms for business cooperation. The growing Uzbekistan–Qatar partnership is an important bridge between Central Asia and the Gulf and reflects the shared vision of both countries for stronger economic and people-to-people ties,” he explained. According to the envoy, Uzbekistan’s expanding international engagement is reflected in the rapid development of its relations with Qatar. “Diplomatic relations, established in 1997, have in recent years evolved into a strategic partnership, supported by a series of high-level visits and growing cooperation in trade, investment, energy, infrastructure, tourism, education and culture,” he stated. The ambassador underlined that a major milestone in the bilateral relations was the state visit of His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to Uzbekistan in June 2023. “The visit opened a new chapter in bilateral relations and resulted in the signing of 15 agreements and memoranda covering investment, trade, taxation, education, culture, agriculture, tourism and other areas,” Khodjaev pointed out. “This was followed by the state visit of Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Qatar in October 2023, where the two leaders agreed to further elevate bilateral relations and witnessed the signing of a new package of agreements and memoranda. In December 2023, His Highness the Amir visited Tashkent to attend the International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award ceremony,” he highlighted.Khodjaev also spoke about the development agenda of Uzbekistan as the country celebrates the 35th anniversary. He said: "Our development agenda is increasingly defined by the ambition to build a modern, competitive and socially inclusive economy; strengthen the rule of law and human capital; accelerate the green and digital transition; and contribute to a peaceful, interconnected and prosperous Central Asia."The envoy also highlighted some of the key achievements since 2016, noting that GDP increased approximately threefold, rising from $60bn to $180bn, while the GDP per capita increased 27% from $3000 to $4000. The national poverty rate fell by almost tenfold from 35% to 4% and the foreign trade turnover increased approximately fivefold from $15.8 to $81.2bn. The number of operating enterprises with foreign capital doubled from 9,400 to 17,900 and the annual volume of endorsed FDI increased six times from $7.4bn to $43.1bn. 

Qatar Charity marked the International Day of Charity, observed annually on September 5, celebrating the value of charity and the idea of giving. Qatar Charity highlighted an event in Ghana, as one of the most compelling stories illustrating the meaning of generosity. Dr Hakeem owned land in a strategic location in Accra, the capital. Although he received offers from traders and investors to sell it, he chose a different path. In 2024, after learning about Qatar Charity’s projects in his country, he donated the land to the organisation, convinced that his property could serve a wider public benefit if placed at the community’s disposal. The site helped make possible the establishment of an office and community complex featuring educational, social and service facilities. In another example in Gaza, Arkan Jomaa needed an opportunity to rebuild his life. The four-year-old lost his parents and sister and sustained injuries in a bombing that resulted in the loss of his leg. After being evacuated to Jordan with his uncle, he began treatment and rehabilitation and started preparing to receive a prosthetic limb, with support from Qatar Charity in cooperation with the Restoring Hope Society in Jordan. For Arkan, the journey captures another dimension of giving. Assistance does not end with medical treatment; it extends to restoring mobility and helping a young child reclaim something of the childhood taken from him by war. From mobility to water, the need changes, but its essence remains the same: ensuring that what is provided can improve everyday life. In Senegal, Qatar Charity implemented water and sanitation projects in several areas. These included 246 wells and 49 water tanks for vulnerable families in Touba, alongside projects in other locations. With a total cost exceeding QR4mn, the initiative benefited more than 70,000 people. In Sri Lanka, the path to a better life lay in restoring sight. Qatar Charity implemented a health initiative that included 300 cataract surgeries and the provision of 555 prescription eyeglasses, including 150 pairs for schoolchildren. The initiative targeted low-income families, older people, and children with vision problems. When floods struck Nepal, Qatar Charity moved swiftly to address urgent needs, providing 30 tonnes of staple food supplies, along with hygiene items and emergency shelter materials. The assistance reached thousands of people affected by the disaster. In such circumstances, speed of delivery becomes part of the value of the assistance itself. Food, shelter, and hygiene supplies are not optional extras when families have lost their homes and essential resources; they are needs that cannot be postponed.
