Spain extend De la Fuente's contract until 2032 after World Cup triumph

* Once mocked by media, coach has had phenomenal success* De la Fuente to lead national team through 2032 Euros* Rewarded with pay rise and record long tenure When Luis de la Fuente took the Spanish national team job, he was the quiet federation man after the noise and glitz of Luis Enrique, a coach many fans had to Google and some media dubbed "Luis de la Who?".Three trophies, 50 matches and one World Cup later, the once-mocking question has a resounding answer: he is the future.De la Fuente has signed a six-year extension until the end of the 2032 European Championship, the Spanish FA (RFEF) said on Monday after ratifying his contract at an executive meeting.The deal, agreed during the triumphant World Cup campaign, is the longest tenure ever approved for a Spain head coach and takes him through the 2028 European Championship, 2030 World Cup and 2032 European Championship.According to sources close to the federation, it also includes a considerable pay rise - a fitting reward for a man who has turned patience, planning and a decade of academy graft into Spain's most dominant spell in generations.De la Fuente has delivered the 2023 Nations League, the 2024 European Championship and the 2026 World Cup. The only trophy to slip away was the less important 2025 Nations League, which Spain lost to Portugal on penalties. SPAIN'S LONGEST UNBEATEN RUN OF 38 MATCHESSpain are also on the longest unbeaten run in their history, 38 matches without defeat.On Monday, under Madrid's scorching heat at the RFEF's Ciudad del Futbol training ground, De la Fuente sat alongside federation president Rafael Louzan and the trophies that trace his rise from youth-team craftsman to architect of the side everyone is trying to catch.His path was never glamorous. A former hard-working full back at Athletic Bilbao, De la Fuente built his coaching life away from club football's glare, joining the RFEF in 2013 and working his way through Spain's youth system.That background, once used against him, became his greatest strength. Rodri, Unai Simon and Mikel Merino were part of his European Under-19 champions in 2015. Merino, Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz later shared Under-21 success with him, while Pedri, Martin Zubimendi and Marc Cucurella were part of Spain's Olympic silver-medal campaign in Tokyo. INHERITED THE SENIOR SIDE IN DECEMBER 2022By the time he inherited the senior side in December 2022 after Spain's disappointing World Cup in Qatar, De la Fuente already knew the habits and hearts of a generation."During the 2024 Euros, we began to emphasise a word that gave us a great deal of security, confidence and strength - family. We want the Spanish national team to be a family and that is honestly how we feel," he said on Monday.Yet De la Fuente insisted this was not a full stop but a starting whistle."We are not content with what we have achieved so far," he said. "The best is yet to come."The man once presented as a question has become Spain's long-term answer.

Chennai Super Kings on Monday announced former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan as the team's new head coach for IPL 2027. A crucial part of India's successful World Cup 2011 campaign, Zaheer comes with a vast experience across formats having played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is for India in a career that spanned 14 years. In the IPL, Zaheer has played 100 matches and turned to coaching roles post his retirement. Rupa Gurunath, owner, Chennai Super Kings, said in a statement posted on the franchise's website: "We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the head coach for Chennai Super Kings. Zaheer's distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise." KS Viswanathan, Managing Director, Chennai Super Kings, said: "Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India's success in the 2000s. He's one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family." Zaheer said: "It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history." According to Viswanathan, Zaheer's name was discussed and agreed upon by the team's leadership group. "We wanted to get the views of the cricket management including MS Dhoni, Ruturaj (Gaikwad) and Sanju (Samson)," Viswanathan told Cricinfo.com. "There were a lot of discussions with the owners also." CONTRACT TO RUN FOR ONE SEASON Zaheer's contract will be a year long and he is expected to start his role soon. The IPL retention window normally is November though franchises have not been given any firm date, the report on Cricinfo.com added. Zaheer, who had a 14-year competitive cricket career capped by an ODI World Cup win in 2011, was recently with Lucknow Super Giants as their mentor until September 2025. He was with Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022, first as director of cricket operations and later global head of development, once the owners diversified and bought T20 teams around the world. The CSK job will be his first as head coach. Viswanathan said Zaheer did not go through any interview process and "readily" agreed to take up the new role, the report added. While the franchise has not made any statement yet on the future of the rest of the coaching bench from last season including long-term pair of Eric Simmons and Michael Hussey, Viswanthan said Zaheer has been given the authority to pick "his own coaching staff". "It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL," Zaheer said in a CSK press release on Monday. "As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history." Zaheer enjoyed successive title-winning seasons working with head coach Mahela Jayawardene at MI in 2019 and 2020. He played 100 IPL matches, picked up 102 wickets and was part of two finals, 2010 and 2011, losing both to CSK. Apart from his vast experience of playing and coaching in IPL, the CSK management and leadership group is certain Zaheer would be "a lot of help" to development of the team's bowlers. CSK have had a difficult time in the IPL recently. They are yet to make the playoffs since winning the title three years ago in Dhoni's final season as full-time captain, and a bottom-placed finish in 2025 prompted a change in the way they function.

The Qatar Diamond Exchange (QDE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Borsa Diamanti d'Italia, establishing a strategic partnership between the two bourses.The agreement was recently signed during the CIBJO Centenary Congress, held in Vicenza, Italy, by Ghanim Nasser al-Saadi, director of the QDE, and Luigi Cosma, president of Borsa Diamanti d’Italia and vice president of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB).The signing took place as the World Jewellery Confederation gathered global industry leaders to mark its 100th anniversary. Borsa Diamanti d'Italia is celebrating the same milestone this year. Founded in Milan in December 1926, it is the oldest trade association in Italy and remains the country's central institution for the diamond trade.The MoU sets out a framework for the two exchanges to build ties between their respective memberships, encouraging commercial relationships, mutual introductions, and broader cooperation. QDE and Borsa Diamanti d'Italia will also invite members and management from both bourses to industry events, tenders, auctions, and viewings, supported by a programme of reciprocal visits.Both parties have further committed to promoting consumer confidence in natural diamonds and precious stones through international and local industry initiatives, and to upholding recognised industry standards, including the World Diamond Council’s System of Warranties and those led by the Responsible Jewellery Council.Al-Saadi said, “This agreement marks an important step in strengthening QDE’s international network and deepening our engagement with established diamond markets. Italy has a strong and respected position within the global diamond and jewellery industry, and our partnership with Borsa Diamanti d’Italia creates new opportunities for our members to build commercial relationships, exchange expertise and connect with industry counterparts. We look forward to developing this partnership and creating greater opportunities for businesses across both markets.”Cosma said, “Our bourse was founded in 1926, and in that century we have learned that the strength of this trade lies in the connections between its centres. Qatar brings a new and well-regulated market into that network, with a clear commitment to the standards our industry depends on. We look forward to introducing our members to Doha, and to welcoming QDE’s members to Milan.”The agreement follows the MoUs signed between QDE and the Diamond Exchange of Singapore, the Shanghai Diamond Exchange, and the Tokyo Diamond Exchange, extending the exchange’s network of bourse partnerships from Asia into Europe.Launched in July 2026 and based at Ras Bufontas Free Zone, QDE provides an integrated, regulated platform for diamond trading and related industry services. It connects Doha with international markets while supporting the growth of Qatar’s diamond and precious stones sector and the country’s economic diversification ambitions under Qatar National Vision 2030.

Pidcock to lead strong British team at worlds, eyeing double

Tom Pidcock will lead a strong British contingent at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal later this month as he bids for an unprecedented double.No male rider has ever won world titles in cross-country and road in the same year but, after Pidcock's triumph on his mountain bike in Val di Sole, Italy, last month and the absence of Tadej Pogacar, he will be one of the favourites.The 27-year-old will not be short of top-quality British support in Montreal with Adam Yates, a key lieutenant of Pogacar in the UAE Team Emirates XRG outfit, Oscar Onley and Fred Wright also selected for the road race.Pidcock, who finished ninth in this year's Tour de France, got his first look at the world championship course at last week's 214km GP de Montreal where he finished sixth in a high-class race won by Mexico's Isaac Del Toro.The world title will be battled out over 273km including 12 punishing laps of the Mount Royal circuit and Pidcock expressed quiet confidence that the course could suit him."On this course, you really need to have the legs for the last two laps," Pidcock said. "It's a good course for me; I've done well here before. But I'm not the top favourite."As Great Britain, we're going to go for it, and the more riders we have in the final, the better our chances of becoming world champions."The only rider to hold the cross-country and road world titles simultaneously was France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, who won the road title in 2014 and the cross-country in 2015.Pidcock picks out Del Toro and Paul Seixas as the favourites for what he expects to be an 'atritional' race but says the absence of Pogacar after the Slovenian's crash at the Vuelta a Espana does increase his chances."Tadej is the hardest rider to beat, and he's not here. That means the second-best rider is easier to beat," Pidcock, who is trying to become the first Briton to win the men's world title since Mark Cavendish in 2011, said.Zoe Backstedt and Cat Ferguson will lead Britain's women's road challenge while Ethan Hayter, who was pipped to victory by Pogacar in Vuelta opening day time trial, will race the TT.

Beyond the screen: Qatar moves to put families first

A child’s digital world does not end when the screen goes dark. Its influence reaches into behaviour, values and emotional wellbeing — putting family conversations at the heart of a new national campaign to keep young people safe online.The Ministry of Social Development and Family Sunday launched “Digitally Aware Family”, bringing together 20 national entities under the slogan “Their Protection, Your Responsibility”.The campaign places digital safety firmly within the family wellbeing agenda, equipping parents and children to recognise online risks and build safer, more balanced relationships with technology.Its central message is that protection takes more than restrictions: it requires awareness, open dialogue and everyday habits that help children navigate the internet responsibly and ask for help when something goes wrong.His Excellency Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Development and Family Khalifa bin Issa al-Kubaisi said digital safety had grown beyond a technical concern to become a family and societal priority, with implications for child-rearing, mental health, privacy and stability at home.As digital platforms become woven into daily life, children’s online experiences inevitably influence their behaviour, values and wellbeing, he said. Families therefore remain the first line of defence, helping young people develop sound judgement while nurturing Qatari values and national identity.Al-Kubaisi stressed that effective protection depended on active awareness, continuing family dialogue and balanced digital habits. Blanket restrictions alone were insufficient; young people also needed the confidence to recognise risks, manage them safely and seek support.That approach runs through the campaign’s three interconnected phases: “Risk Awareness”, “Practical Protection” and “Responsibility & Reporting”. Together, they move the focus from understanding potential dangers to taking protective action and knowing when to raise the alarm.The initiative addresses the places where children increasingly spend their digital lives: the internet, social media, games and apps. It aims to help both children and parents understand risks and prevention, encourage responsible online behaviour and bring national partners together around clear, consistent safety messages.Its reach extends beyond the home to social and psychological specialists, content creators and organisations supporting family welfare, recognising that protecting children requires a wider circle of informed adults and institutions.To put practical support within easy reach, the ministry also launched www.esafety.qa, a central portal offering educational guides, awareness materials, useful links and other digital resources.The campaign operates under the Digital Safety Committee for Children and Youth, which brings relevant national entities together to assess digital safety trends, recommend policies and awareness initiatives, and coordinate institutional action. Its remit also encompasses legislation, resources and technical support to help create a safer digital environment across Qatar.The initiative forms part of the ministry’s National Strategy for 2025–2030, “From Care to Empowerment”, which seeks to strengthen family stability and cohesion while helping households adapt to rapid technological change. It also supports the human and social development pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030.The ministry urged families and community partners to take part and use the portal’s resources to make digital safety an everyday practice — as familiar at home as any other habit that protects a child’s wellbeing.
