For two decades, Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) has served as a gateway to the world, producing graduates who are consistently sought after by leading institutions, from top consulting firms and sovereign wealth funds to elite graduate programmes. A recent look at alumni over the past five years shows success across a wide range of sectors, challenging the stigma that a liberal arts education does not lead to strong career outcomes. Many graduates have moved into competitive roles soon after graduation, reflecting the university’s reputation for producing highly capable professionals. For graduates drawn to strategy and business transformation, the path to elite consulting firms has been strikingly direct. Shaza Afifi, who majored in Culture and Politics, joined Boston Consulting Group as a junior associate just three months after graduation. In the years since, she has advanced through the ranks and now manages client engagements while training aspiring consultants. Alongside Afifi, shortly after graduating, Adeena Yaqoob secured a consulting role at PwC, earning a promotion to senior consultant in just two years. Ayesha Iqbal began her career at Bain, a top global management consulting firm, where she rose to senior associate before moving into a consulting role at Visa. These graduates are just a few examples of GU-Q success stories, further demonstrating that the university’s graduates are sought after by major firms for their track record. The spirit of inquiry fostered on campus has also led many graduates toward entrepreneurship. Mudassar Raza Shakir founded Active Arenaz, a sports facility booking app, while Labeeba Ahmed co-founded AgriCope, a business-to-business food supply chain platform. Ahmed received funding from incubators in Qatar, and during her time as a student at the GU-Q, she also explored startup ventures while working as a researcher at Qatar University. For those whose appetite for ideas led them deeper into academia, the transition to elite graduate programmes has been seamless. Fiza Shahzad is pursuing her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania, while Syed Taha Kaleem is enrolled at Brandeis University. Both have leveraged their GU-Q foundation to thrive in doctoral programmes, where they continue to analyse complex global issues, arriving prepared not just to absorb ideas but to interrogate them. Years out, GU-Q alumni are gaining experience while already shaping the fields they enter, underscoring the enduring value of a Georgetown education. 

Qatar Charity (QC), through its Burkina Faso Branch, has implemented a series of projects and activities across several regions of the country, as part of its ongoing humanitarian and development efforts. The initiatives included the implementation of 28 development projects, alongside participation in key national activities, highlighting the vital role played by Qatar Charity in supporting sustainable development efforts and strengthening cooperation with government institutions and development partners. The projects included the inauguration of four mosques in several areas. Each mosque comprises a 70sq m prayer hall, four sanitation units, and ablution facilities, providing suitable spaces for worship and serving the needs of local communities. Qatar Charity also inaugurated two Quran Memorisation Centres in two different areas. Each centre covers an area of 306sq m and consists of classrooms, a boarding facility, a dining hall, a kitchen, and other integrated service facilities, helping enhance educational opportunities for younger generations. In the water sector, the QC inaugurated 30m-deep wells in in various locations, improving access to clean water and reducing the burden on residents. As part of its economic empowerment efforts, the QC handed over 20 shops to low-income families, enabling beneficiaries to establish sustainable sources of income and improve their living conditions. These initiatives align closely with Burkina Faso’s National Sustainable Development Strategy, focusing on education, water, and sanitation. The beneficiaries expressed satisfaction with the improvements in their lives, saying that these projects contributed to meeting basic needs, enhancing educational opportunities, and promoting Islamic values. Local officials lauded the efforts and their positive impact, stressing the need for ongoing cooperation to drive comprehensive, long-term development. 

Recent graduates Bdour Saeed Bakhamis and Mai Khamis al-Mansouri have praised the Qatar National Library (QNL)’s new “My Mentor” (murshidi in Arabic) Academic Mentoring Programme, describing it as a valuable initiative that combines practical guidance with meaningful mentorship to help young people navigate their academic and professional journeys. The two graduates, who completed their studies in Management Information Systems and taxation at Qatar University in June, took part in the programme’s introductory session held on July 4. They spoke to Gulf Times and highlighted the programme’s interactive approach and the opportunity to connect directly with experienced academics and professionals from across Qatar. Bakhamis said the programme exceeded her expectations by offering practical advice rather than theoretical guidance. “What impressed me most was the opportunity to interact directly with experienced mentors who understand the challenges students and recent graduates face,” she said. “The programme provides realistic guidance that can help participants make informed decisions about their future” Bakhamis added. “I believe the one-on-one mentoring sessions will be especially valuable in building confidence and identifying the right academic and career paths.” Al-Mansouri described the initiative as an important platform for young graduates preparing to enter the labour market. “The programme creates a supportive environment where participants can benefit from the experiences of accomplished professionals,” she said. “It gives us the chance to ask questions, receive personalised advice, and better understand the opportunities available to us. I am confident the mentoring experience will strengthen my professional skills and help me plan my career with greater clarity.” Organised by the QNL, the “My Mentor” programme is designed to support students and graduates in making informed academic and career decisions. The initiative draws on the expertise of academics, professionals from Education City, alumni networks, and specialists from institutions across Qatar. The programme begins with an introductory session that familiarises participants with its objectives, mentoring framework, and available services. Participants could also meet prospective mentors before selecting one whose academic background and professional experience best match their aspirations. Following the orientation, each participant is paired with a mentor for a series of weekly one-on-one sessions that provide personalised guidance on academic planning, university applications, scholarships, career development, and professional growth. The mentoring relationship is designed to equip participants with practical insights, expand their professional networks, and enhance their readiness for higher education and the job market. The initiative targets high school students preparing for university, university students approaching graduation, and recent graduates beginning their careers. Through “My Mentor”, the QNL aims to foster direct connections between young people and experienced professionals, enabling participants to gain real-world perspectives, develop essential skills, explore educational and career opportunities, and make confident decisions about their futures.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Hazardous Chemicals and Waste Department, concluded its summer training program for students of Qatar University (QU) and University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST), with the participation of 30 male and female students, as part of its efforts to support national capacity building, qualify young talents, and enhance their contribution to the sustainable development process. The Ministry of Environment said in a statement Sunday that the training program extended over nine weeks for UDST students, and six weeks for QU students to develop students’ knowledge of modern concepts of environmental sustainability, and introduce them to the most prominent strategic initiatives and projects implemented by the Ministry in the areas of green development, environmental protection, and natural resource management.The Ministry of Environment indicated that the program, during its activities in the first and second weeks, focused on linking the academic aspect with practical and field applications, enabling students to directly learn about the specializations of the various departments in the ministry, which contributes to refining their skills and preparing qualified national cadres capable of supporting national efforts in the fields of environmental protection and sustainability.The ministry explained that the program began for UDST students by receiving them in the Hazardous Chemicals and Waste Department, which took over the supervision of the implementation of the program and coordination with the relevant departments, allowing the students the opportunity to learn about the ministry’s specializations and gain scientific and practical experiences through specialized lectures, field visits, and practical applications. During the program, UDST students participated in training programs in cooperation with the Radiation Protection Department and Green Development and Environmental Sustainability Department, where they learned the fundamentals of radiation protection, radiation safety requirements, safe uses of radiation technologies, and radiation monitoring and inspection.The students were also briefed on the ministry's efforts in sustainability, circular economy, green finance, biodiversity, and the role of modern technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting environmental work.QU students also began their training program in green development management and environmental sustainability, where they learned about sustainability concepts, the circular economy, and related national initiatives, and presented applied projects that promote innovation in finding sustainable environmental solutions.The students continued their training in the Environmental Assessment and Permit Department, where they learned about environmental impact assessment procedures and the issuance of environmental permits, efforts to protect the marine environment and preserve biodiversity, and topics related to environmental pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and renewable energy projects. The ministry affirmed that the program comes within the framework of its ongoing commitment to developing national talent and enhancing cooperation with academic institutions, contributing to the preparation of young cadres capable of supporting the path of sustainable development and protecting the environment in the State of Qatar.

Art and music came together with a powerful social purpose during a special event held in Doha to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26. Organized by Manaveeyam Qatar, the programme titled “Music is Addiction” offered a unique platform where creativity was used to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and encourage healthier lifestyles.The event featured prominent socio-cultural activists, talented singers and artists from the community, creating an engaging evening that combined entertainment with an important social message. Among the highlights of the programme was an exhibition of awareness-themed artworks, including a striking painting titled “Stolen Dreams – The Silent Victims” by Doha-based artist and educator Rachana Binoy. The painting drew significant attention from attendees for its vivid portrayal of the devastating consequences of drug addiction and the hope that comes with recovery. Through powerful imagery and symbolism, the artwork presents a compelling visual narrative of the choices individuals face when confronted with addiction. **media[464525]**The left side of the canvas depicts the dark reality of substance abuse. Dominated by black and grey tones, the section reflects hopelessness, despair and the gradual destruction of life caused by addiction. Syringes, pills and drug bottles symbolize different forms of substance dependence, while lifeless human figures, smoking cigarettes and a skull underscore the tragic consequences that can ultimately lead to death.  A barren tree and directional signs pointing toward slavery, pain, regret, loneliness and death further reinforce the message. At the centre of the painting stands a prison cell shaped like a liquor bottle, with cigarette bars enclosing the space.  The imagery illustrates how addiction traps individuals, isolating them from society and imprisoning them within destructive habits. Heavy iron chains symbolize the difficulty of breaking free from addiction. However, the bold message “SAY No to Drugs” serves as the focal point of the artwork, emphasizing that prevention begins with a single decision to reject substance abuse. In contrast, the right side of the painting celebrates the possibilities of a life free from addiction. Bright colours, a rising sun and flourishing natural surroundings symbolize hope, freedom and renewal.  A human figure raising its hands toward the sunlight represents liberation and recovery, while images of clean water, nutritious food, books, sports equipment and bicycles highlight the importance of healthy choices for physical and mental well-being. Directional signs point toward health, happiness, success, peace and a promising future. Speaking through her artwork, Rachana poses a thought-provoking question to viewers: whether to follow the path of addiction that leads to suffering and isolation, or to embrace a healthier future filled with hope and opportunity. The painting delivers a clear and accessible message that life is precious and should never be surrendered to addiction.  Rachana is a music teacher currently working at an Indian school in Doha and is also an active performer in cultural programmes and stage shows. In addition to her musical pursuits, she is an accomplished artist known for her expertise in Kerala mural art and awareness-themed paintings. Among her recent works is “Keraleeyam,” a six-foot Kerala mural that celebrates the state's rich cultural heritage. The artwork features iconic elements such as Theyyam, Mohiniyattam, Vallamkali, Kalaripayattu, Kathakali and Ottanthullal, along with the traditional sounds of Kombu and Thudi.  Inspired by her roots in Thrissur, Kerala, the mural also showcases Thiruvathira Kali, Thrissur Pooram and Pulikkali, capturing the vibrant spirit of Kerala on a single canvas. With “Stolen Dreams – The Silent Victims,” Rachana continues to use art as a powerful medium for social awareness, demonstrating how creativity can inspire reflection, spark conversations and encourage positive change within the community.  

Acting President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, awarded the "Heroes of Venezuela” medal to Qatar International Search and Rescue Group of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) in recognition of their humanitarian efforts during rescue and relief operations following the twin earthquakes that struck the country.This honor recognizes the Qatari team's successful relief missions, during which it demonstrated a high level of professionalism, rapid response, and commitment to humanitarian duty, setting an example of international cooperation in disaster response, mitigating its effects, and alleviating the suffering of those affected. 

Qatar Charity has launched a specialised medical initiative in Sudan to provide paediatric catheterisation and open-heart surgeries, as part of Qatar’s continued humanitarian and health support amid the ongoing conflict.  The project was inaugurated at the Wad Madani Centre for Cardiac Surgery and Diseases in Gezira State, with the participation of Sudan’s Minister of Health, Dr Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim; the governor of Gezira State, al-Tahir Ibrahim al-Khair; and the acting chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Qatar, Abdullah Rashid al-Khater.  Dr Ibrahim praised Qatar Charity’s support for Sudan’s health sector, noting that its medical camps in ophthalmology, paediatric catheterisation, and open-heart surgery reflect the gradual restoration of normal life in Gezira State and the recovery of the local health system. He said Qatar’s support has contributed to rehabilitating hospitals and strengthening Gezira’s role as a national medical hub.  The Governor of Gezira State emphasised that the project would provide vital medical services to children and ease the financial and emotional burden on their families.  Al-Khater said the paediatric heart surgeries are part of the diverse humanitarian and medical programmes Qatar Charity has continued to implement in Sudan since the beginning of the war.  He noted that the launch coincided with an eye surgery programme to remove cataracts in four Sudanese states, benefiting more than 600 people. He also thanked the doctors, nurses, and hospital teams whose efforts are helping relieve children’s suffering.  Prof Salah al-Basha, director general of the National Heart Centre and senior consultant cardiologist at the Ministry of Health, said the camp is the first of its kind since the war. He highlighted the urgent need for such interventions, particularly after years of conflict led to a growing backlog of children awaiting treatment.  Khalid Abdullah al-Yafei, assistant to the chief executive officer said 50 specialised operations will be carried out under the initiative, including cardiac catheterisations and open-heart surgeries.  Al-Yafei added that the initiative forms part of Qatar Charity’s integrated health programme in Sudan. The programme includes a blindness prevention campaign in Wad Madani, which is expected to benefit more than 2,000 patients through medical examinations and more than 200 cataract surgeries. A cochlear implant programme for children is also scheduled to begin next week at Doha Hospital in Khartoum.
