HH the Amir receives phone conversation from Pakistan Prime Minister

HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani has received a phone call from  Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, to discuss bilateral ties and the latest regional and international developments.The conversation on Friday focused on cooperation between their countries and explored ways to strengthen relations, alongside efforts to support security and peace in the region.HE Sharif expressed his country's full support and solidarity with the State of Qatar amid the current regional developments, stressing the importance of restraint, dialogue and diplomacy to preserve recent gains in regional stability. The Pakistani prime minister also praised the State of Qatar's role in supporting peace efforts and said Islamabad looked forward to continuing coordination with Doha to promote peace, stability and prosperity across the region. The two leaders also discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts, including talks between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and underscored the need to continue efforts to reduce tensions and resolve disputes through peaceful means. HH the Amir and  the Pakistani Prime Minister reaffirmed their commitment to continued coordination on regional security, including safeguarding maritime security and shipping lanes, and supporting conditions for a lasting and sustainable peace in the region.

Pakistan launches search after cargo plane loses contact off Karachi

Pakistani authorities have launched a search and rescue operation after a Boeing 737 cargo aircraft carrying five crew members lost contact with air traffic control off the coast of Karachi following a reported navigation system malfunction.The Pakistan Airports Authority said the aircraft, operated by K2 Airways, was en route to Karachi when it reported a navigation system problem late Tuesday before communications with air traffic controllers were lost. Preliminary flight-tracking data indicated the aircraft made erratic altitude changes before disappearing from radar over the Arabian Sea, raising fears it may have crashed into the water.Authorities have mobilized a multi-agency search and rescue operation in the Sea to locate the missing aircraft and its crew.As part of the operation, the Pakistan Navy has deployed the frigate PNS Zulfiqar, while the Pakistan Air Force is assisting with aerial search missions. Merchant vessels in the area have also been directed to support the search efforts.The cause of the aircraft's disappearance has not been determined, and authorities said the search operation remains ongoing.

At least 40 Killed after bus falls into ravine in Southwest Pakistan

At least 40 people were killed and 11 others injured when a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a ravine in southwest Pakistan.Local authorities reported that the bus was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar when it went off the road and plunged into a deep ravine in the mountainous Dana Sar region. The death toll is still preliminary.Balochistan Government Spokesman Shahid Rand said that emergency teams rushed to the scene to begin rescue operations and recover the victims.

Pakistan says PM Sharif to attend Iran supreme leader's funeral

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will attend the funeral of the late Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei this week, the South Asian nation's foreign ministry said on Thursday."The Prime Minister, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, will go to Iran and Turkey from 3-5 July... he will go to Iran first for (the) supreme leader's funeral," ministry spokesman Tahir Andrabi told reporters.Pakistan has been mediating between the United States and Iran to end the regional war which began in February with US-Israeli strikes that killed the 86-year-old Iranian supreme leader in Tehran.Andrabi reiterated earlier statements from Pakistan and fellow mediator Qatar that US-Iranian indirect talks in Doha this week had made progress and another meeting could take place after Khamenei's funeral.The public funeral will begin on Saturday, with his body lying in state at the colossal complex in central Tehran that hosts major Friday prayers, official ceremonies and religious gatherings.Pakistan shares deep historic ties with Iran. The two share a 900-kilometre (560-mile) border and cultural links, with Sunni-majority Pakistan home to the world's second-largest Shia population after Iran.Sharif's trip to Turkey would involve meetings with Turkish leadership and businesspeople, Andrabi said.

Shining bright: Made-in-Pakistan FIFA World Cup balls dazzle at Katara pavilion

Pakistan showcased its major role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup yesterday by premiering the tournament's official match ball at a specially decorated Katara pavilion.The official ball of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, named ‘Trionda', designed by Adidas, is on display at the Pakistan Pavilion set up in Gallery 45.The world’s most technologically advanced match ball, complete with an AI-powered chip for real-time refereeing data, is stitched by local craftsmen in the Pakistani city of Sialkot.The pavilion was opened yesterday at Katara by HE Prof. Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara, and HE Muhammad Aamer, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.“We've all been watching the FIFA World Cup matches that are on right now. When Pakistan cheers from the sidelines, this (pointing towards the ball) is our quiet contribution to the game,” the Pakistan ambassador told the assembled guests and media.“Although Pakistan's football team isn't (playing) at the FIFA World Cup, but remember we have been part of the 8 out of last 10 World Cup editions. All these balls are produced in one city - Siakot. As you can see, we are part of this global celebration in the US, Canada and Mexico,” he said.The General Manager of Katara, al-Sulaiti said yesterday: “We are happy to host this pavilion with the Ambassador of Pakistan. This pavilion is one of the corners that we share with brotherly countries like Pakistan. Today we opened a pavilion for Pakistan."He added: "We are very proud because this pavilion has three footballs on display that are being used at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The interesting thing is that these three balls were produced in Pakistan. We were told that these were produced in Sialkot, a city famous globally for other in-demand sports products. Sialkot also caters to the international needs for cricket equipment and surgical supplies that are traded around the world. Sialkot is famous for that."Al-Sulaiti said: "This initiative reflects our commitment to global sports as a bridge for cultural dialogue. It underscores our role as a premier destination where sports and culture converge to connect people worldwide."The Pakistan ambassador said: "The Pakistan embassy is delighted by this opportunity to display made-in-Pakistan balls. This has been possible because of the gracious help of His Excellency Professor Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara. We are proud to share our story in Qatar, a nation that showed the world how sports can bring people together. Thank you, once again to Katara for making this display possible." Qurat Ul Ain Zafar, Trade and Investment Attache, Embassy of Pakistan, said yesterday: "For decades, Sialkot has been a global football manufacturing centre. Since 1990, match balls for eight of the ten FIFA World Cup editions have been produced in Pakistan. This reflects not only the scale but the craftsmanship, skills and trust at the highest level of the sport. From traditional handstitched balls to today's advanced thermally-bonded technology, Pakistan's manufacturers have met the most demanding international standards."The Pakistan Pavilion is located in Building 45, which also hosts the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Legacy Exhibition.

Minister of State for International Cooperation meets Pakistani Ambassador

HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Dr. Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, met on Wednesday with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the State of Qatar, Muhammad Amir.During the meeting, they discussed cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to support and enhance them, in addition to several topics of mutual interest.

Pakistan's KGTL port plans up to $100 mn more investment after Iran war cargo surge

Pakistan's Karachi Gateway Terminal ‌is planning up to $100mn in new investment ‌within five years ⁠as the ‌country tries to cut freight ‌costs and turn a cargo surge triggered by the Iran war ⁠into longer-term regional shipping gains.Karachi Gateway Terminal Ltd, backed by Abu Dhabi Ports Group, has already completed a $60mn dredging project at Karachi Port and is expanding container and bulk-handling facilities, CEO Khurram Aziz Khan told Reuters in an interview."We are targeting another $75mn to $100mn" within five years, Khan said, ​adding that the next phase would focus on expanding the container terminal, enhancing yard capacity, larger ship and yard cranes, dedicated bulk export infrastructure, ‌silos, warehouses and automated ⁠conveying.KGTL is also ​exploring investment in rail freight, including locomotives, rolling stock ​and storage hubs near agricultural areas, to link those areas to ports and help Pakistan export products such as corn and rice more competitively, he said."For transit as well, you need to provide a complete solution," Khan said. "We are ready to invest in that as well, to bring our own rolling stock and locomotive for the freight trains business."The Iran war created a new ‌opportunity for Pakistan to ‌act as a transshipment hub, ⁠as cargo was rerouted through Karachi for onward shipment to other ⁠destinations during the ⁠conflict, Khan said."Pakistan has never really handled transshipment volume," he said. "This conflict has created this opportunity for Pakistan."The dredging project is expected to allow Karachi Port to handle bulk vessels of up to 120,000 metric tonnes, from about 60,000 tonnes previously, once Karachi Port ​Trust issues revised handling parameters expected within days, Khan said.KGTL is upgrading its bulk terminal to cut handling time for a 60,000-tonne vessel to about 2.5 to 3 days from 12 to 15 days, while building silos with annual capacity of 8.5mn tonnes for clean bulk cargo to secure national food security, bulk-export warehouses and systems for fertilizer imports.But sustaining the ‌gains will depend ​on better road and rail links, Khan said.

Egyptian President discusses regional developments with Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish FMs

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Sunday discussed regional developments with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah Al Saud, Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.The discussions took place during the 4th meeting of the foreign ministers of the quadrilateral group comprising Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkiye, held in Cairo on Sunday.In a statement, the Egyptian Presidency said that President El Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to continuing cooperation with Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkiye, and all Arab and regional states to support the implementation of the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and ensure the success of the negotiation process between both sides.The Egyptian President also stressed the importance of reaching a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, considering it a fundamental prerequisite for achieving comprehensive and lasting stability in the region.

Qatar announces launch of Lake Lucerne Summit, first high-level committee meeting with participation of US, Iran, Pakistan

The State of Qatar announced, in its capacity as a mediator, the launch of the Lake Lucerne Summit and the first meeting of a high-level committee bringing together representatives of the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the two mediating states, the State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, hoping that the meetings would lead to a comprehensive and lasting agreement addressing all issues covered by the memorandum of understanding. In remarks to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), Adviser to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, said specialized technical and expert working groups had been established to negotiate the provisions of a final agreement covering all aspects of the memorandum of understanding. He added that follow-up groups had also been formed to oversee implementation of the memorandum and monitor progress toward the conclusion of a final agreement, reflecting the commitment of all parties to move forward with the negotiating process in good faith and to reach a comprehensive and sustainable agreement. Dr. Al Ansari said Qatar, as one of the mediating states, would continue working with Pakistan and all relevant parties to foster a positive environment that would enable the negotiations to achieve their objectives. He said the effort stemmed from Qatar's firm belief that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective means of resolving conflicts and settling disputes. Adviser to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed Qatar's appreciation for the important role played by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan as a partner and mediator in the process, praising its close cooperation and efforts in support of the negotiations. He further expressed Qatar's appreciation for the commitment of the United States and Iran to diplomatic solutions, as well as for the support provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Turkiye, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, along with other friendly and sisterly countries, which helped create favorable conditions for advancing the process. Dr. Al Ansari reiterated the State of Qatar's full support for all efforts aimed at ensuring the success of the negotiations and reaching a final agreement that would strengthen lasting peace, security, stability and prosperity in the region.

Seven killed in two roadside bomb blasts in northwestern Pakistan

Seven people were killed on Saturday in two roadside explosions in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistani police said.Yasir Afridi, the police chief in Bannu district, said a small passenger vehicle was targeted by a remotely detonated improvised explosive device while traveling through the area.He added that a second explosion occurred as the wounded were being transported to the hospital by ambulance, killing additional victims.No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, while authorities have launched an investigation.Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the bombings, which killed civilians.The Pakistani president warned that internal and external actors were supporting armed groups by providing safe havens, logistical support and financing, stressing that Pakistan would continue its efforts to dismantle networks threatening national stability.

Iraq's Iqbal becomes first player of Pakistani heritage at World Cup

Zidane Iqbal made history on Tuesday by becoming the first player of Pakistani heritage to feature at a FIFA World Cup, marking a landmark moment for football in a country that has yet to qualify for the global showpiece.The 23-year-old Iraq midfielder came off the bench in the 59th minute of his side's Group stage match against Norway, etching his name into the history books despite Iraq suffering a 4-1 defeat.Born in Manchester in April 2003 to a Pakistani father from Sahiwal in Punjab and an Iraqi mother, Iqbal was eligible to represent Pakistan, Iraq or England at international level. He ultimately chose Iraq.Iqbal began playing football with Sale United at the age of four before joining Manchester United's academy at nine after being spotted by scouts. He progressed through the club's youth ranks and made a senior appearance before moving to Dutch side FC Utrecht, where he also featured for the reserve team, Jong FC Utrecht.His World Cup appearance carries added significance for Pakistan, a nation of more than 250 million people that has never qualified for the tournament. Pakistan are currently ranked 198th in the world.
