Lionel Messi extended his incredible scoring streak against MLS-leaders Nashville on Saturday as Inter Miami battled to a 2-2 draw in their top-of-the-table Eastern Conference clash. Messi curled in a superb strike on 62 minutes at Miami's Nu Stadium to fire Inter into a 2-1 lead but Nashville grabbed a share of the points after striker Sam Surridge bundled in an injury-time equaliser. The 39-year-old Messi has now scored a remarkable 17 goals in 14 games against Nashville in all competitions since joining Miami in 2023. And Messi could have even improved his goals record against in Saturday's game between the first and second-placed sides in the Eastern Conference. Messi saw a shot crash off the underside of the bar in the 50th minute and also saw a shot cannon off the post in the 78th minute. A late Messi effort was also headed clear by Nashville defender Jeisson Palacios before Surridge's leveler. The result leaves Inter nine points adrift of Nashville in the race for top seeding with nine regular season games remaining. Earlier, Nashville had got off to a dream start when English striker Surridge sprang the offside trap before burying a low shot into the bottom corner in the fourth minute.But Miami drew level midway through the half and again Messi was involved. The World Cup-winner's wicked in-swinging corner found the head of Nashville defender Reed Baker-Whiting, who glanced in an own goal. It looked as if Messi had grabbed the winner midway through the second half when he combined with former Argentina international team-mate Rodrigo De Paul on the edge of the area before curling a shot beyond the dive of Brian Schwake. But Miami's failure to extend their lead proved costly as Surridge scored from close range in injury time to steal a point. 

Dutch football matches will be abandoned if fireworks are used in the stands under a new agreement between the KNVB, the Public Prosecution Service and Justice and Security Minister David van Weel, Dutch media reported.The move follows an incident during SC Cambuur's league match against Feyenoord in Leeuwarden last month, when visiting supporters threw fireworks, leaving several fans with burns, hearing damage and eye injuries."From now on, the rule is: if fireworks are used, the match is over immediately and the entire stadium can go home," Van Weel told Dutch newspaper AD.The match was halted for around 20 minutes in the first half after Feyenoord fans in the away section lit large numbers of red flares and threw fireworks. Some were aimed at sections housing Cambuur supporters, while one exploded on the pitch just a few metres from Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst.Cambuur later said five fans were injured.

Argentina icon Lionel Messi has agreed to take over Spanish club Eldense, the second division side confirmed on Thursday. Eldense, based just in-land from Alicante, will become the former Barcelona attacker's second venture into Spanish football ownership having bought fourth-tier Cornella in April. The 39-year-old plays for Inter Miami and retired from international duty after Argentina's loss to Spain in the World Cup final this summer. "CD Eldense can confirm that Lionel Messi has reached an agreement in principle with the club's current owners to acquire the shares currently held by Grupo TH Soluciones, which would make him the majority shareholder of CD Eldense," they told AFP. "At this time, the transaction is pending completion of the final legal and contractual procedures, including the due diligence process, as well as the required authorisation from the Spanish Sports Council (CSD)."For now, the club is unable to provide details on the financial terms of the transaction or set a definitive date for its completion, as the process has not yet been finalised. "Once the relevant procedures have been completed and the necessary authorizations obtained, CD Eldense will officially report any developments in this regard," the club founded in 1921 added.bur-iwd/bsp

Qatar’s Under-23 national football team is stepping up preparations for their Asian Games campaign, with coach Jose Angel Lacunza also using domestic competition to give his young players valuable match experience.Qatar will open their Asian Games campaign against South Korea on September 15 before taking on Saudi Arabia three days later on September 18.With the tournament fast approaching, Lacunza believes the team’s participation in the Qatar’s second division is providing an important platform for the players to develop and gain experience against senior opposition.The Spanish coach has welcomed the opportunity to compete in the second division, saying the regular matches are helping both the coaching staff and players prepare for the challenges ahead.The Asian Games men’s football tournament will feature 15 teams, with the competition running from September 14 to October 3 across venues in Japan’s Chubu and Kansai regions.The tournament will be played by Under-23 national teams, with squads allowed to include up to three overage players.Qatar were drawn in Group D with South Korea and Saudi Arabia. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. South Korea enter the tournament as defending men’s champions.For Qatar, the immediate focus will be on building rhythm and ensuring the players are ready for the two group matches, with the second league providing Lacunza with another opportunity to assess his squad before the Asian Games.
