Belgium and Egypt drew 1-1 in their World Cup opener after a second-half Belgian equaliser spoiled Mohamed Salah's 34th birthday.Emam Ashour opened the scoring early in the first half in Seattle, before Romelu Lukaku came off the bench after the hour to force Egypt's Mohamed Hany into an own goal.With the draw, seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions Egypt's wait for a first victory at a World Cup goes on.This is their fourth participation in the global showpiece and with Group G fixtures to come against Iran and New Zealand, they will hope to break that hoodoo in North America.For Belgium, this tournament is likely the last chance for the remnants of their golden generation to better their third-placed finish in Russia eight years ago and finally win silverware.Veterans Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois and Lukaku are the main protagonists of that group still involved in Rudi Garcia's squad.With all eyes in the Pacific Northwest on Salah and De Bruyne, it was the ex-Manchester City playmaker that created the first moment of note in the match when he dragged a sharp effort narrowly wide in the seventh minute.However, it was Ashour who upstaged the pair just before the hydration break when he received the ball in a similar position to De Bruyne but his sweetly-struck effort left Courtois no chance as it whistled into the bottom-right corner.It was just the second time in their history that Egypt had taken the lead in a World Cup match -- after Salah opened the scoring in a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in 2018.De Bruyne came within inches of levelling early in the second period when he whipped a close-range free-kick over the Egyptian wall, only to see it rocket off the outside of the post.Salah responded at the other end as he ghosted into the box but had his downward header punched away by Courtois with Ashour getting his follow-up effort all wrong.The match became stretched as both sides came close on a couple of occasions, including a screaming left-footed volley by Belgian captain Youri Tielemans.With 65 minutes gone, Rudi Garcia decided to send on Lukaku.The change immediately paid dividends as Belgium's all-time top goalscorer showed his predatory instincts to dash in on a Thomas Meunier cross, with his presence enough to destabilize Hany who put through his own net.Salah departed the field with 15 minutes remaining as Egypt sought to shut up shop and ultimately held out for a point. 

France's David Trezeguet and Brazil's Zico and Dunga all left their mark on World Cup history decades ago.In 2026, their names will return to football's biggest stage but this time on the backs of Egyptian players.When the Pharaohs walk onto the tournament pitch this month, several squad members will carry monikers drawn from some of the game's most iconic figures - names first picked up years ago on dusty training grounds, in youth academies and across local leagues.The tradition is rooted in similarities of playing style or appearance and in a football culture that has long embraced legendary names.One standout is Mahmoud Hassan, popularly called "Trezeguet," who plays for Egyptian giants Al Ahly.The 31-year-old winger, who previously had a spell in the Premier League with Aston Villa, made his World Cup debut at Russia 2018 and is now preparing for his second appearance.His nickname was given by youth coach Badr Ragab, who saw in Hassan's style and aerial prowess shades of the French striker who helped France lift the 1998 World Cup and later featured in the 2002 and 2006 tournaments."From his first days... I noticed (Hassan's) resemblance to Trezeguet, both in appearance and playing style," Ragab told AFP."He was strong in the air and scored goals in a similar way, so I gave him the name. I never imagined it would stay with him for so long."The original Trezeguet earned 71 caps for France before ending his international career in 2014.Now, Egypt's own Trezeguet is edging towards a milestone of his own, sitting just short of 100 caps, a mark he could reach should Egypt progress beyond the group stage at the World Cup.The team will face Belgium, Iran and New Zealand in Group G. 'LITTLE ZICO'Brazil's influence is also visible within the Egyptian squad.Mostafa Abdel-Raouf, a midfielder for Pyramids FC, has been known as "Little Zico" since his early days in the game, a reference to one of Brazil's most gifted playmakers.Unlike Hassan's nickname, the origin was more personal than tactical.Abdel-Raouf's older brother, who also played football, was nicknamed Zico because his full name included "Zaki"."When Mostafa started playing, coaches called him 'little Zico' because he was my younger brother," he told AFP.The name stayed with him as he moved through different clubs, he added.The original Zico made 71 appearances for Brazil and played in three World Cups before retiring in 1994.Egypt's 29-year-old Zico is only just beginning his international journey.Called up for the first time ahead of the tournament, he made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut in a friendly against Russia in May. KNOWN AS 'DUNGA' Another Brazilian-inspired nickname belongs to Nabil Emad, known as "Dunga", after the midfielder who captained Brazil to World Cup glory in 1994.The 27-year-old, now playing as a defensive midfielder for Saudi Pro League club Al-Najma, is competing in his second major international tournament after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.His nickname dates back to his early career, when he was spotted playing in Egypt's second division."I admired the Brazilian player, and Nabil played in the same position with a very similar style," said Wael Habib, a former official at Al Assiouty, now Pyramids FC, who signed him in 2014.Emad went on to establish himself at Pyramids, later joining Egyptian giants Zamalek before moving abroad.In Egypt, such naming traditions are far from unusual.Ragab, who coined the nickname Trezeguet, also handed out other European-inspired names in his youth teams, including "Nedved" for ex-Al Ahly winger Karim Walid, after Czech legend Pavel Nedved.Other players have carried names borrowed from well-known figures, from Al Ahly's Ahmed Ramadan, known as "Beckham", to former Zamalek player Youssef Ibrahim, whose nickname "Obama" set him apart beyond the pitch. 

Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, discussed efforts to reduce tensions and promote stability in the region during a phone call on Tuesday with Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy to the Middle East.In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt said the two officials reviewed developments in the course of US-Iran negotiations and exchanged views on ways to advance the diplomatic process.The discussions also focused on efforts to reach a mutually acceptable settlement that could help ease tensions between the two sides, according to the statement.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and Sudan in a phone call with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated in a press release today that the call addressed ongoing efforts to advance the implementation of the second phase of US President Donald Trump's plan for Gaza, including the deployment of an international stabilization force, support for the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, the opening of the Rafah crossing in both directions, and the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.In this regard, Abdelatty stressed the urgent need to launch an early recovery and reconstruction process based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the needs of the population in the Gaza Strip.Regarding developments in Sudan, the Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of reaching a humanitarian truce and establishing safe humanitarian corridors as a prelude to a comprehensive ceasefire. He also emphasized the importance of launching a comprehensive Sudanese political process.He further reiterated Egypt's firm position on the necessity of respecting Sudan's sovereignty, preserving its unity and territorial integrity, and supporting its national institutions.

US President Donald Trump expressed his appreciation for the efforts of his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El Sisi for the mediation efforts between Hamas and the Israeli occupation to reach a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing his appreciation for bilateral relations between the two countries.In a message to the Egyptian President, Trump noted the repercussions of the war in Gaza on security and humanitarian conditions.He also said that the US was ready to launch a mediation between the State of Qatar and Ethiopia to resolve the dispute over the Nile water sharing that addresses the needs of all parties involved. He stressed that no country should unilaterally control the precious resources of the Nile.

His Excellency Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi met Monday with Egypt ambassador to Qatar Walid Fahmy al-Faqi. During the meeting, they discussed relations between the countries and ways to support and enhance them.

QatarEnergy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt to strengthen co-operation in the energy sector, with special focus on the supply of LNG from QatarEnergy to Egypt.  The agreement was signed by His Excellency the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also the president and CEO of QatarEnergy, and Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt, at a special ceremony held at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha.  In remarks at the signing ceremony, Minister al-Kaabi said, “We are pleased to further enhance our co-operation with the Arab Republic of Egypt. This agreement builds on our recent successful cooperation with Egypt, particularly with respect to the supply of LNG from QatarEnergy’s portfolio.”  Al-Kaabi added: “This MoU further strengthens our bilateral relationship as we work jointly towards additional supplies of long-term LNG from QatarEnergy to meet Egypt’s growing demand for energy to fuel its robust economic and industrial growth. “We look forward to collaborating with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and with all our partners in Egypt to further strengthen our cooperation and to support Egypt with its future LNG requirements.”  The MoU paves the way for continued cooperation in the energy sector, including the long-term delivery of LNG from QatarEnergy to Egypt, where QatarEnergy and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) have reached an agreement for the supply of up to 24 LNG cargoes for the summer of 2026. QatarEnergy and EGAS have also agreed to initiate discussions on additional and long-term supplies of LNG from QatarEnergy to Egypt.

 With the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 underway, Egyptian national team player Mahmoud ‘Trézéguet’ Hassan is proud of Qatar’s leading role in bringing recognition to the region in the world of sports.   “The world witnessed Qatar’s exceptional hosting capabilitiesduring the World Cup in 2022. It was a historic achievement not just for the country, but for the region. Now with the Arab Cup, all eyes are on Qatar once again, as Arab football takes centre stage,” said Egypt’s prolific striker, whose goal scoring style earned him the nickname ‘Trézéguet’, after former French footballer David Trézéguet. Egypt has been placed in Group C in the Arab Cup, alongside Jordan, UAE and Kuwait. The Pharaohs will look to improve on their last showing, when they finished fourth, after narrowly losing to hosts Qatar in a penalty shootout at the FIFA Arab Cup held in 2021. "The Arab Cup is an incredible tournament. It is an honour for Egypt to play in this prestigious competition. Every match is an opportunity for the team to showcase its strength, and I am sure they are ready to give it their all and make our fans proud," said Hassan, who also plays as a midfielder for Egyptian powerhouse, Al Ahly. His prolific club career also included playing for top European clubs, such as the English Premier League side Aston Villa, and Qatar's Al-Rayyan SC. Hassan marked his debut with the Egyptian national team in 2014, helping the team reach the African Cup final in 2017 and 2023. Most recently, he made a notable impact in the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, scoring five goals and helping Egypt secure a spot at the prestigious tournament. "There is no greater feeling than wearing the national team jersey, with millions of Egyptian fans cheering for you. Playing for Egypt is an honour. I look forward to every match as though it is my first," said Hassan, who has made 86 appearances for his national team, scoring a total of 22 goals to date.Egypt will look to make their fans proud at the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, as the team gets ready to kick off their campaign on 2 December when they face Kuwait at the iconic Lusail Stadium, 5:30pm. “Playing in Qatar is a wonderful experience for any player. They will be playing on World Cup stadiums, which makes this tournament all the more special. Qatar’s sporting infrastructure is truly commendable. The quality of stadiums and facilities make a difference in a team’s performance and success,” said Hassan.   The FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 is taking place from 1-18 December across six stadiums, that previously hosted matches during the historic FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.. A total of 16 teams will have a chance to win the coveted trophy.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan discussed developments in the Gaza Strip, as well as ways to enhance bilateral relations, during their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.The two ministers emphasised the importance of implementing the latest United Nations Security Council resolution on the Gaza Strip and enabling the International Stabilisation Force to carry out its duties.The meeting also reviewed Egypt's efforts to consolidate the Sharm El-Sheikh peace agreement and to support the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. In addition, the ministers discussed a number of regional issues of mutual interest, ways to implement the outcomes of the recent Joint Planning Group meeting held in Ankara, Turkiye, and preparations for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Cairo to chair the second meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, scheduled for 2026.
