Applications open for WISE EdTech Accelerator

The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), a global initiative of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, has announced the opening of applications for the 2026-2027 cycle of WISE EdTech Accelerator.  In a statement yesterday, WISE invited EdTech startups from Qatar and around the world to apply for the programme. Applications will remain open until October 31, with the new cohort set to begin the programme in January 2027.  The programme targets for-profit startups at the seed or pre-Series A funding stages. Eligible companies must have progressed beyond the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) stage and have market-ready products that have generated sales and user engagement, while demonstrating measurable educational impact.  The programme offers two tracks, local and international, to support startups at different stages of regional and global expansion. It provides specialised mentorship and guidance, strategic business growth support, and networking opportunities within the education and innovation ecosystem, as well as access to a global network of investors.The local track provides additional support to companies seeking to establish a presence in Qatar by connecting them with local ecosystem partners and available funding opportunities.  WISE Director of Innovation Aurelio Amaral said entrepreneurs in EdTech sector are developing promising solutions to address current educational challenges, noting that turning these solutions into sustainable ventures requires support that goes beyond developing a strong product.He added that the programme aims to help founders build companies capable of delivering tangible educational impact and strengthen their readiness to move to higher stages of growth.  Over the past decade, WISE EdTech Accelerator has supported more than 40 startups from 20 countries, with their solutions reaching more than 15mn beneficiaries across 130 countries worldwide. The 2025-2026 cohort comprised eight startups that achieved significant growth, reaching more than 2.9mn learners and educators while expanding their operations in Qatar and Mena region.

Latest WCM-Q study links chronic inflammation to colorectal cancer

Researchers from the Department of Systems and Computational Biomedicine at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) have examined the role of chronic low-grade inflammation in the rising incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in a new review published as the featured article in the September issue (volume 12, issue 9) of Trends in Cancer.  The article, titled “Defying inflammation-driven early-onset colorectal cancer: predict, prevent, and personalise,” explores how early-life exposure to both modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors may contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation (CLGI), a subtle yet significant factor potentially fueling the rise in EOCRC cases. Importantly, CLGI could promote EOCRC by altering the proinflammatory and immune microenvironment in ways that support growth of tumour and cancer.  “Cases of early-onset colorectal cancer are rapidly rising worldwide. Most young patients have no family history of the disease and are often diagnosed at a late stage, and their cancers differ from late-onset colorectal cancer in many ways. The growing number of cases, poor prognosis and related deaths underscore the urgent need for focused research on disease prediction and prevention, as well as targeted clinical interventions to improve treatment outcomes,” said Dr Dietrich Büsselberg, professor of systems and computational biomedicine at WCM-Q and a co-corresponding author of the article.  The researchers examine how risk factors disrupt immune homeostasis and contribute to CLGI in young individuals, potentially promoting the development of EOCRC. They also explain how identifying CLGI-specific biomarkers could aid inearly detection and diagnosis, whiletargeting specific molecular pathways may enable personalised therapeutic interventions by reducing the threat of chronic inflammation.  The researchers also highlight the importance of lifestyle changes and other interventions to reduce chronic low-grade inflammation and address the growing health concern posed by EOCRC. The authors suggest that combining anti-inflammatory diets, drugs and personalised approaches targeting CLGI may help prevent EOCRC and improve therapeutic outcomes.  Dr Samson Mathews Samuel, a research associate at WCM-Q and co-corresponding author of the article, said: “Chronic low-grade inflammation, which can result from exposure to environmental pollutants and toxins, unhealthy lifestyles, metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes, and an imbalanced gut microbiome, is a key trigger for the development and progression of early-onset colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer screening guidelines should therefore account for early-life environmental and lifestyle exposures and could include inflammation-based biomarkers to identify at-risk individuals earlier.”

Finland seeks SME growth with Qatar via Slush, Web Summit

Qatar and Finland are building structural links between their small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) and startup ecosystems, leveraging global innovation hubs like Slush in Helsinki and Web Summit Qatar in Doha to accelerate trade and venture capital flows.The initiative involves collaborative efforts between the Qatar Research and Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council and Business Finland, establishing a framework to build research, development, and innovation ties across key growth sectors, Finnish ambassador Juha Mustonen told Gulf Times Tuesday.Mustonen said diplomats are exploring pathways to connect Qatari and Finnish business networks, starting with delegation exchanges across both flagship tech gatherings.“Slush is Finland’s major startup conference. The embassy recently discussed how to strengthen connections between Qatar’s and Finland’s business ecosystems. One possible starting point would be to bring a delegation of Qatari small and medium-sized enterprises and investors to Slush, followed by a delegation to an event such as Web Summit. These are two platforms we should explore, and I’m very excited about taking this cooperation forward,” Mustonen said.The cross-border initiative comes as Finland pushes aggressive targets to expand its national R&D infrastructure.Under-Secretary of State and Deputy Minister for International Trade of Finland Jarno Syrjälä also said Finland plans to allocate 4% of its GDP to research and development by the end of this decade, with SMEs and early-stage ventures driving much of that output.Syrjälä emphasised that Finland’s startup ecosystem offers practical lessons for Qatar as both nations cultivate local talent and scale high-tech ventures.“Finland has a very strong ecosystem, particularly when it comes to startups, and continues to invest heavily in research and development. Our goal is for R&D spending to reach 4% of GDP by the end of this decade. Much of this work is carried out by small and medium-sized companies that begin as startups. We hope they will scale up and eventually become major players,” Syrjälä explained.Syrjälä also highlighted Slush as a primary engine for founder-investor deal-making. “It’s currently the largest event of its kind in Europe, bringing together people to discuss future cooperation. Last year, 14,000 participants from around the world attended, creating opportunities for investors to connect with startups as well as with one another,” Syrjälä noted, pointing to Web Summit Qatar as a similar event capable of generating cross-border collaboration.“The idea is the same for both events, and I believe we can cooperate, learn from each other, and connect the right people,” he continued.Beyond venture building, Syrjälä identified deeptech, 5G and emerging 6G connectivity, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, satellite technologies, and education as key strategic pillars for Qatari-Finnish commercial collaboration.“Our equation is straightforward: we invest heavily in research and development, and then in education to create the right environment for innovation. Communication is a critical area, particularly as digitalisation accelerates and becomes even more important.“The transition to 5G—and eventually 6G—is already underway, and Finnish companies are active participants in these developments. At the same time, artificial intelligence is transforming every sector, alongside advances in quantum computing and satellite technologies,” Syrjälä pointed out.
