A hidden gem of computers in the heart of Doha

It may take a little effort to find, but what is inside makes the search worthwhile.Tucked away on the second floor of Al Mirqab Mall in Al Nasr is a surprisingly well-stocked computer destination that many Doha residents may not know about — Prestige Computers Qatar.In fact, finding the store can take a little time. But once inside, the experience is quite different from what one might expect from a relatively small outlet.Behind the doors is an impressive inventory of 1,500+ computers, ranging from business machines and everyday laptops to premium gaming systems and professional workstations.The selection includes familiar business ranges such as Dell OptiPlex and QCT business desktops, All-in-Ones and ProOne systems, Lenovo ThinkCentre and ThinkPads, and HP ProBook, and OmniBook, alongside premium models such as Yoga, Legion Pro, HP OMEN, Acer Helios, MSI Vector and Alienware.There is also a selection of custom-built and pre-built high-performance PCs, workstations, monitors and accessories, with brands including Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, MSI, Acer and Gigabyte.What makes the place particularly interesting is the combination of variety and value. Selected new models can be found at significant discounts, and carry official manufacturer warranty.Prestige Computers is an ISO-certified company established in 2020 and an authorised partner for Dell, HP and Lenovo, serving both individual customers and businesses.It is perhaps best described as a hidden little computer city inside a shopping mall — the kind of place you might spend some time trying to locate, only to discover that there is considerably more inside than you expected.For anyone shopping for a laptop, desktop, gaming PC or workstation in Doha, Prestige Computers at Al Mirqab Mall may well be one of those hidden gems worth discovering. It is open daily from 10am-10pm.

QU’s Unesco Chair on Desalination, Water Treatment marks World Water Week

Prof Syed Javaid Zaidi, the Unesco Chair on Desalination and Water Treatment at Qatar University (QU), participated in the World Water Week events organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute, focusing on innovation in the water sector.  The event brought together stakeholders from governments, academia, industry, UN bodies, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from more than 180 countries.Focusing on innovation in the water sector, the event addressed key issues related to water security.  Since its inception, the Unesco Chair on Desalination and Water Treatment, led by Prof Zaidi, has focused on technical solutions, research innovation, and capacity building to support the local desalination and water treatment industry and promote international partnerships.  The Unesco Chair team has been developing a family of membrane desalination technologies for reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, and pressure retarded osmosis systems, turning farm and industrial waste into new materials for water treatment and water reduction in agriculture, and training process and plant engineers for Qatar’s water sector.Much of the Chair’s recent work centres on membranes, thin sheets of material that remove salts and contaminants from seawater.  Researchers have built a growing family of these membranes from different source materials, among them graphene oxide composites, graphene quantum dots, and nanofiber membranes spun from recycled 3D-printing waste and polylactic acid, a biodegradable plastic.  The Chair has also used that research to paint a broader picture of where Qatar stands: researchers published a pioneering study on Qatar Desalination Research in the prestigious journal Desalination.  The Unesco Chair team has focused heavily on pressure retarded osmosis, or PRO: a process that dilutes desalination brine and generates energy, called blue energy, from the difference in salt concentration.  Rather than relying on outside equipment, the team has designed and built its own dual-mode forward osmosis/PRO testing systems in-house; this work has received international recognition at conferences.  Prof Mohammad R Irshidat, director of the QU’s Centre for Advanced Materials (CAM), noted that the Chair, established under the centre, is dedicated to innovation in water desalination research and capacity building in Qatar’s desalination industry, contributing to the Qatar National Vision 2030 and SDG6.

SJC announces completion of 50% of new designs for Courts Complex, Court of Cassation

The Supreme Judiciary Council (SJC) announced that it has completed more than 50% of the new designs for its permanent facilities project, which includes the Courts Complex in Lusail City and the headquarters of the Court of Cassation in the Wadi Al Sail area, as part of the national initiative for developing justice systems.  In a statement yesterday, the SJC highlighted that the designs were developed in collaboration with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), as the overall project aims to establish a high-end operational model for courts in line with its 2025-2030 Strategy, which supports litigation, settlement and mediation pathways, the amicable division of estates, and the pursuit of digital justice pathways, while leveraging artificial intelligence technologies to streamline procedures and deliver timely justice.  HE the President of the Supreme Judiciary Council and President of the Court of Cassation Dr Hassan bin Lahdan al-Hassan al-Mohannadi said reaching this advanced stage of the design process represents a pivotal step toward executing the Council’s vision of upgrading the judicial environment.  The project is a strategic investment that goes beyond providing modern buildings to encompass the development of an integrated judicial environment that enhances procedural efficiency and responds to future developments in the scope of services, al-Mohannadi noted.  He heaped praise on the contribution of Qatar Plan, led by HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, to identifying the site for the new Court of Cassation headquarters on Khalifa Street in the Wadi Al Sail area, further reinforcing the integration of urban development and cultural identity.  The SJC selected the winning designs through an international architectural competition launched in 2023. The designs forge a balance between Qatari and Islamic heritage and modern architectural engineering while incorporating comprehensive sustainability standards, including a three-star GSAS rating.  As part of the project, the SJC worked with Qatar Museums to refine the interior design and formed a joint technical working team to examine the building’s artistic elements, particularly Islamic ornamentation and Arabic calligraphy.  The effort underscores the importance of reinforcing Qatar’s cultural identity throughout the design while reflecting the stature of the judiciary and the symbolism of the new judicial facilities.The Courts Complex project is located in the Wadi Al Banat area of Lusail City, on a site spanning approximately 100,000sq m, with a total built-up area of 300,000sq m.  It comprises 51 buildings housing 94 courtrooms, bringing all courts and judicial committees under one roof while providing for the complete separation of public, judicial, and operational circulation.  The Court of Cassation headquarters in the Wadi Al Sail area spans a built-up area of 75,000sq m on a 70,000sq m site. It comprises three buildings housing four courtrooms and a grand courtroom accommodating 500 people, with an architectural design inspired by traditional Qatari architecture and sand dunes.

South Asian energy planners are seeking equity partnerships with Middle Eastern sovereign funds to finance a major expansion of India’s downstream oil processing infrastructure.  Last month, Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri stated that major regional energy producers, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, have expressed strong interest in funding projects within the nation’s refining sector.The initiative supports India’s plan to increase national refining capacity from 5.4mn barrels per day (bpd) to over 6.2mn bpd to meet rising domestic fuel requirements.  Alongside direct refining proposals from regional peers, India is broadening its diplomatic outreach to Qatar to secure institutional capital across the broader energy value chain.In April 2026, during a two-day official visit to Doha, Puri met Minister of State for Energy Affairs HE Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also president and CEO of QatarEnergy, to discuss strategic relations, trade, investment, and maritime supply chain security.During the meeting, both officials reaffirmed bilateral energy cooperation while stressing the necessity of maintaining stability in global fuel supplies and ensuring unhindered maritime commerce during regional disruptions, according to state-run Qatar News Agency (QNA).  While trade between the two nations has historically been anchored by long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreements, bilateral dialogue is increasingly focusing on mutual equity participation in processing assets, the website of the Indian Embassy in Qatar stated.  Long-term gas trade remains a central pillar, highlighted by Petronet LNG’s 20-year contract extension in 2024 to purchase 7.5mn tonnes of LNG annually from QatarEnergy through July 2028 and beyond, QNA also reported. To facilitate structured financial flows into new sectors, India and Qatar established the Joint Task Force on Investment (JTFI) to explore commercial opportunities across infrastructure, technology, and energy.  The inaugural meeting of the joint working group took place in New Delhi in June 2024, co-chaired by Ministry of Commerce and Industry Undersecretary Mohammed bin Hassan al-Maliki and India’s Department of Economic Affairs Undersecretary Ajay Seth. During the meeting, al-Maliki highlighted that bilateral trade volume reached approximately $13.46bn in 2023, positioning India as Qatar’s second-largest trading partner.  At the time, Qatari exports to India consist primarily of LNG, liquefied petroleum gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, plastics, and aluminium products. Indian exports to Qatar include cereals, copper articles, iron and steel products, vegetables, spices, electrical machinery, construction materials, and manufactured textiles, it was reported.  Bilateral economic interaction is further supported by formal financial frameworks, including a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) signed in April 1999 that came into effect in January 2000 to prevent fiscal evasion and govern income tax rates.Under the agreement, specific withholding tax rates are set at 10% for interest, royalties, and technical service fees, while dividend withholding tax is set at 5% for corporate holdings of at least 10%.  The institutional framework builds upon a proven track record of Qatari sovereign wealth deployment in Indian utility and power infrastructure assets. The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) acquired a 25.1% stake in Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) in February 2020 for approximately $450mn, establishing an initial operational presence in urban power distribution.  In August 2023, QIA expanded its energy portfolio by acquiring a 2.68% equity stake in Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) for approximately $500mn through its subsidiary INQ Holding.  QNA reported that in April this year, Qatar Central Bank Governor HE Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, who is also chairman of QIA, held a meeting with AGEL executive director Sagar Adani, where they discussed the latest developments in global finance and investment.  According to official reports, India is expected to drive 25% of global energy demand growth over the next two decades, prompting the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to target sovereign wealth partnerships for refining capital and fuel security.

Qatar's Asian Games campaign sets new benchmark, says QOC Secretary-General

Qatar’s 18-medal haul at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games reflected the country’s progress across a wider range of sports and provided an important step in preparations for Doha 2030, Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Secretary-General Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain said.He described Qatar’s participation as positive, stressing that the objective went beyond the medal tally and included preparing athletes and national teams for future competitions, particularly the next Asian Games, which Doha will host in 2030.“The participation was not solely aimed at achieving results or contending for medals. It was part of a strategic plan to prepare our national teams for upcoming events, foremost among them Doha 2030,” al-Buenain said.Qatar improved on its 14-medal haul at Hangzhou 2022, winning six gold, six silver and six bronze medals across 10 sports in Aichi-Nagoya.Rashed Nawaf and Mashari Nawaf made history by winning Qatar’s first Asian Games padel gold, while Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan retained their beach volleyball title for a third successive Games. Bassem Hemeida won gold in the 400m hurdles, while shooting produced two gold medals through Rashed Saleh al-Athba’s individual skeet triumph and the men’s team title. Faleh al-Ajami then capped Qatar’s campaign with individual show jumping gold, while Bassem Mohammed added bronze. **media[500079]**Ouisal Ikhlef also made history by becoming the first Qatari female weightlifter to win an Asian Games medal. Qatar also won medals in handball and 3x3 basketball, underlining the breadth of its success.Al-Buenain said the return of sports such as karate, wrestling and weightlifting to the podium, together with the emergence of padel, were encouraging signs of progress.“Qatar successfully won medals across 10 different sports, securing a total of 18 medals. These results mark a milestone not seen since the 2010 Asian Games,” al-Buenain said.He said the results reflected a deliberate approach of combining experienced athletes with emerging young talent and giving them exposure to major competitions as part of the long-term development plan. **media[500081]**Al-Buenain also highlighted the performance of Qatar’s team sports, with handball, beach volleyball and 3x3 basketball all winning medals. “These achievements reflect a broadening competitive base and the improved performance levels of various sports,” he said.Qatar sent 243 athletes to Aichi-Nagoya, competing in 26 sports and 32 disciplines at the Games, which brought together more than 17,000 athletes and officials.The medal total continued Qatar’s upward trend at the Asian Games. The country won 13 medals at Jakarta-Palembang in 2018, followed by 14 at Hangzhou in 2022, before reaching 18 in Japan.Beyond the competition, al-Buenain pointed to the impact of Qatar House in Nagoya, which attracted around 5,000 visitors during the Games and showcased Qatar’s culture, heritage and identity.He thanked the QOC delegation, national federations, administrative and media teams, as well as the Qatar House and Doha 2030 delegations, for their efforts during the Games.“The assessment of Qatar’s participation goes beyond the medal tally. It also encompasses the experience gained by athletes, the emergence of promising young talent and the strengthening of Qatar’s sporting and cultural presence on the Asian stage,” he said.The Doha 2030 delegation was in Nagoya to study the organisation and preparations for the Games, with al-Buenain stressing that the responsibility of preparing Qatar to host the continental event in four years had now begun.With the next Asian Games heading to Doha, Qatar’s record campaign in Japan has provided both a new benchmark and valuable experience as preparations begin for 2030.
