His Excellency the Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari met with Minister of Finance and National Revenue of Canada, Francois-Philippe Champagne at the Ministry of Finance headquarters in Doha, reports QNA.  The meeting addressed bilateral relations between the two countries and explored avenues for enhanced co-operation. Discussions also covered key economic, investment, and trade developments of mutual interest.

rabic into other languages across all categories and subject areas over a three-year period. The submitted works must demonstrate high standards of artistic production and a rich diversity of cultural, literary, and scientific content. The prize value is QAR 30,000.The sixth category, the Creative Writer Award, is open to authors who submit the publisher's consent for participation, along with the author's curriculum vitae and a synopsis of the submitted book. Each author may participate with one individually authored book only, written in Arabic and not previously translated. The total word count must be no fewer than 20,000 words for Qatari authors and 25,000 words for international authors. The book must be uploaded in PDF format to the award website, accompanied by copies of personal identification and passport documents, with full compliance with intellectual property laws. The author must be alive at the time of nomination. The prize value is QAR 20,000.The seventh category, the Creative Young Qatari Writer Award, is limited to young Qatari authors. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a synopsis of the book, and the publisher's consent for participation. Each author may submit one individually authored, Arabic-language, non-translated book with a minimum of 20,000 words. The book must be uploaded in PDF format to the award website, along with copies of personal identification or passport documents, and compliance with intellectual property rights is required. The author must be alive at the time of nomination. The prize value is QAR 20,000.The eighth and final category, the Best Pavilion Award at the 35th Doha International Book Fair, honors the pavilion distinguished by its unique design and its ability to offer a comprehensive and immersive cultural experience. The prize value for this category is QAR 40,000. 

US President Donald Trump expressed his appreciation for the efforts of his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El Sisi for the mediation efforts between Hamas and the Israeli occupation to reach a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing his appreciation for bilateral relations between the two countries.In a message to the Egyptian President, Trump noted the repercussions of the war in Gaza on security and humanitarian conditions.He also said that the US was ready to launch a mediation between the State of Qatar and Ethiopia to resolve the dispute over the Nile water sharing that addresses the needs of all parties involved. He stressed that no country should unilaterally control the precious resources of the Nile.

Qatar Chamber recently organised a three-day training programme titled ‘Mastering the Arts of Selling, Negotiating, & Deal Closing’, held for the first time in Qatar.The training is part of the chamber’s efforts to develop professional competencies and enhance commercial capabilities in both the public and private sectors.The programme aimed to equip participants with advanced skills in professional selling, negotiating, and deal closing, using modern practical methods focused on achieving results and building sustainable business relationships.The course was delivered by Dr Abdul Rahman Abu Khaled and targeted professionals working in sales management, marketing, business development and business relations, as well as entrepreneurs.For her part, Fatima Issa al-Kuwari, head of the Training and Development Department at Qatar Chamber, stated that the programme reflects the chamber’s commitment to developing professional skills and enhancing workforce efficiency in commercial and economic sectors, in line with labour market requirements.She noted that it focuses on practical application and building real capabilities in sales, negotiation and deal management, stressing that investment in human capital is a key pillar for achieving sustainability and growth in the business environment.Al-Kuwari added that Qatar Chamber continues to offer high-quality training in partnership with experts, aimed at providing participants with practical tools to enhance performance, achieve tangible results and build long-term business relationships. 

The Organizing Committee for Qatar-UAE Super Cup unveiled details of the tournament’s third edition, which brings together clubs from Qatar and the UAE, at a Press Conference held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Torch Hotel. Present were representatives of Organizing Committee – Ahmed Al Adsani, Director of Competitions, Abdullah al-Minhali, Facility Manager, and Ali Hassan Al Salat, Media Manager. The conference reviewed preparations for the two matches to be held in Doha – Al Gharafa vs Sharjah (UAE) in Super Cup and Al Sadd vs Shabab Al Ahli in Super Shield.Al-Minhali confirmed that the Al Gharafa vs Sharjah match would be played on January 22 (kick-off 7pm) at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium, with gates opening to fans at 4pm.He emphasized the readiness of facilities and the full co-ordination with security authorities. He added that the Al Sadd vs Shabab Al Ahli match (kick-off 7pm) would be played on January 24 at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, confirming that designated fan zones have been set up at both stadiums, and fan activities and prize draws would be organized in co-ordination with competing clubs. On his part, Al-Adsani explained that the tournament features four teams from each country. He noted that the matches are played in a knockout format, with penalty kicks immediately following a draw at the end of regular time. The tournament winners will receive a cash prize of QR4mn and runners-up QR2mn. He emphasized that there are incentives specifically designed to encourage attendance and enhance the tournament’s competitive atmosphere. The Organizing Committee reviews the regulations after each edition and works to improve the tournament’s technical and organizational aspects to ensure the best possible outcome. Al-Salat said the tickets had been on sale since January 11 through online platforms of UAE Pro League and Qatar Stars League. He explained that 75 per cent of the tickets for Al Sadd vs Shabab Al Ahli match and 50 per cent of the tickets for Al Gharafa vs Sharjah match had already been sold out, with sales expected to increase on conclusion of Week 13 of Doha Bank Stars League. He added the co-ordination with Hayya platform to issue media accreditation cards in the coming days, noting that Al Kass channels would broadcast the matches as Host Broadcaster along with Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi channels, using more than 20 cameras to cover the event. Al-Salat thanked the tournament’s official sponsors, most notably Visit Qatar, official sponsor for three seasons, Air Arabia as official airline sponsor, Ooredoo as telecommunications partner, and Jetour Motors in addition to fan zones set up by companies such as Hardee’s, Red Bull and Jetour on the sidelines of competitions. 

Qatar is fast emerging as a global leader in precision medicine, powered by more than a decade of strategic investment in genomics and biobanking. With these advances, the nation is positioning itself at the forefront of personalised healthcare — a vision championed by the Qatar Precision Health Institute (QPHI), part of Qatar Foundation, according to a senior official.Dr Emmanouil Dermitzakis, president of QPHI, told Gulf Times: “QPHI and its foundational projects, Qatar Biobank and Qatar Genome Programme, have successfully invested over a decade in developing world leading data and process infrastructure for the future. The combination offers a unique framework to develop a world-leading precision health and medicine platform for the benefit of the local as well as global population.”“It is now time to capitalise on these resources to innovate on clinical implementation and impact to boost industry and entrepreneurial activity and to continue enhancing the infrastructure with more data generation and discovery of new important pieces of medical knowledge at scale,” continued Dr Dermitzakis.The official noted that precision medicine is actively shaping healthcare in Qatar today. “Through national biobanks, cohort studies, pharmacogenomics and early genomic interventions, we are already seeing its impact in real clinical settings. But to fully realise its potential, we must start with education and awareness,” he underlined.Dr Dermitzakis pointed out that there is a common misconception that precision health is futuristic or only accessible to a privileged few.He explained: “In reality, it is happening now, and it is saving lives. We must make this clear to the general public, helping them understand that personalised care is not about luxury, it is about effectiveness, prevention, and equity. Precision medicine is about making better decisions earlier, so its implementation leads to a healthier population and overall lower cost for the health system.”According to Dr Dermitzakis it is all the more important to engage policymakers and healthcare leaders in the whole process.“By making the science and outcomes of precision medicine tangible and relatable, we can support informed decisions that accelerate its integration into national healthcare strategies. This is how we move from innovation to implementation by ensuring that everyone, from patients to policymakers, understands the value and urgency of precision health,” the official emphsised.“The key issue is that while genomic data is well structured and similar across individuals, clinical records from hospitals tend to be sparse and unstructured, making difficult to achieve unbiased data analysis and use of innovative tools such as AI. The integration of unified and deep clinical analysis performed at the Qatar Biobank allows to circumvent this problem, and we will continue to capitalise on this unique resource that has been created and offers world leading opportunities for discovery and clinical trials,” described Dr Dermitzakis.As for the official, genomic analyses are now central to clinical decision-making, allowing physicians to move from generalised treatment protocols to highly targeted interventions.He highlighted: “Predictive diagnostics is one of the most promising frontiers in precision medicine. It allows us to identify individuals at elevated risk for complex conditions often long before symptoms appear by analysing genetic, molecular, and environmental data.“In QPHI, one of our key areas of exploration and improvement is the integration of AI and machine learning into predictive diagnostics. We are currently investigating how these technologies could enhance our ability to detect subtle patterns across genomic data, clinical records, imaging, and behavioural assessments. This approach holds particular promise for complex conditions like cancer and autism spectrum disorder, where early intervention can significantly improve outcomes.”“Our vision is to make predictive diagnostics a routine part of healthcare in Qatar empowering clinicians and patients with foresight,” the official pointed out. 

Participants at the 4th Private Sector Social Responsibility and Its Role in Sustainable Development Conference have adopted the Doha Declaration 2026, outlining a long-term roadmap to align business profitability with sustainability and social impact.The two-day conference, hosted by the Qatar Chamber, concluded on Thursday with recommendations focusing on unified standards for corporate social responsibility (CSR), stronger governance of global value chains, and increased investment in innovation, digital transformation and green finance.The declaration calls for the adoption of a unified professional classification for CSR, proposing the Arab CSR Index as a regional benchmark. It also urges family-owned businesses to embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices into their operations and to support initiatives promoting digital education, community health, women's empowerment, youth engagement and social entrepreneurship.Participants highlighted the importance of investing in artificial intelligence and green technologies to improve efficiency and reduce carbon footprints. The conference also recommended launching an International Observatory for Sustainability and Social Responsibility, alongside professional exchange and twinning programs aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and spreading a culture of social responsibility among younger generations.A key theme of the conference was the shift away from traditional charity-based CSR towards an integrated ESG-driven model aligned with international sustainability standards, seen as essential for long-term business resilience and economic competitiveness in the Arab world.The Doha Declaration 2026 also emphasised humanitarian solidarity, calling for the creation of joint Arab funds and initiatives to support research and development and digital entrepreneurship.Conference participants described social responsibility as a strategic pillar of good governance, arguing that the private sector plays a central role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and in building trust between businesses and society.Organised jointly by the Qatar Chamber, the Union of Arab Chambers, the League of Arab States, the Regional Network Consultancy and the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the conference began on Wednesday and brought together business leaders, policymakers and international partners.Organisers said the declaration represents a collective commitment to translating the conference's vision into practical policies, laying the foundations for what they described as a new social contract that balances growth with sustainability and equity for future generations.

The Follow-Up Committee of the Joint Qatari-Saudi Business Council recently held its first meeting in Riyadh.It was presided over by Hamad bin Ali al-Shuwair, chairman of the Saudi side, and Qatar Chamber board member Ali bin Abdullatif al-Misnad, who is also a member of the council. The meeting was also attended by Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Emadi, Qatar Chamber board member and member of the council.The meeting discussed ways to stimulate the role of the sectoral committees within the council, particularly the education and health sectors. It also reviewed a proposal to prepare a study on establishing a joint investment company aimed at enhancing economic integration between the two countries, in addition to intensifying communication with the relevant authorities and unifying delegations for foreign visits from both sides.Attendees also reviewed a number of topics, including the importance and advantages of Hamad Port for Saudi traders, customs tariffs on Qatari goods, and the temporary entry of equipment and vehicles from Qatar.In his remarks, al-Misnad noted that the formation of the committee reflects the mutual keenness of both sides to activate the outcomes of the joint business council’s meetings and translate its recommendations into practical steps that contribute to strengthening economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.Al-Misnad also stated that the committee plays a leading role in identifying the challenges facing the business community in both countries and working to address them, in addition to proposing initiatives that would enhance co-operation between business owners and open new opportunities for joint and mutual investments, thereby increasing trade exchange and strengthening bilateral economic partnership.He affirmed the chamber’s commitment to strengthening close co-operation with its Saudi counterparts through the Qatari-Saudi Business Council, in line with the deep-rooted fraternal and historical relations between the two countries and the wise directives of their leaderships aimed at promoting economic integration and developing strategic partnerships.
