Qatar Chamber and a Malaysian delegation held a meeting Wednesday to discuss ways to enhance trade and economic ties between Qatar and Malaysia.The delegation was led by Dr Hajj Mohamed bin Ali Mohamed Rustam, governor of Malacca State, who was received by Qatar Chamber board members Dr Mohamed bin Jawhar al-Mohamed and Abdulrahman bin Abduljaleel al-Abdulghani.During the meeting, which was attended by Malaysian ambassador Mohamed Faizal Razali, both parties also discussed investment opportunities for collaboration between Qatari and Malaysian business owners across various sectors.Rustam said the state offers numerous investment opportunities in various sectors, including tourism, halal industries, and healthcare.He called on Qatar Chamber and Qatari companies to participate in the MIHAS Halal Expo, scheduled to take place on September 23-26, with the participation of several leading Malaysian and international companies.For his part, al-Mohamed emphasised Qatar Chamber’s keenness to strengthen cooperation between Qatari and Malaysian investors, noting the significance of the Joint Business Council in developing ties between the business communities of both countries.Al-Abdulghani said Qatar and Malaysia enjoy close relations, stressing the private sector’s role in developing these relations and taking them to broader horizons. He also noted there are significant opportunities for cooperation between both countries’ private sectors across various areas, including the halal industry, which offers tremendous potential and numerous opportunities.

President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali met on Wednesday with HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, at His Excellency's residence in Doha. During the meeting, they discussed cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to enhance and develop them in various fields. The two sides also exchanged views on several regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The Qatar Table Tennis Association (QTTA) took part in the second meeting of the West Asia Table Tennis Federation's Board of Directors, which reviewed preparations for upcoming regional competitions and approved Madinah, Saudi Arabia, as the venue for the next West Asia Table Tennis Club Championship in December 2026. The meeting, held via videoconference, also reviewed a report on the 2026 West Asia Table Tennis Championships, held in Amman, Jordan, from August 12 to 19. The tournament brought together 10 countries, with 241 players competing in the team events, 152 in the singles events and 75 pairs in the doubles competitions. A new team competition format was also introduced. Ahmed Khalil al-Mohannadi, Secretary-General of the Qatar and West Asia Table Tennis Federations, said preparations would begin early for the championship, including completing organizational arrangements and sending official invitations to member associations. He said the efforts aim to ensure broad participation and deliver a tournament that reflects the standing of table tennis in the region. Al-Mohannadi praised Qatar's strong representation within the West Asia Table Tennis Federation, saying it reflected the standing of Qatari expertise in regional and continental sports administration. He added that such representation carried a significant responsibility to contribute effectively to the development of championships, programs and projects aimed at advancing the future of table tennis in the region. 

Qatar's Islamic banking sector continues to demonstrate steady growth, consolidating its position within the national financial system, driven by overall banking sector strength, evolving regulatory frameworks, expanding digital services, and rising demand for sukuk and sustainable finance. The latest Qatar Central Bank (QCB) data from its 2025 Financial Stability Report issued in August highlights the resilience and stability of the Qatari banking sector. Total bank assets grew by 5.1%, propelled by credit growth in both the public and private sectors. Asset quality continued to improve amid declining non-performing loans (NPLs) and strengthened risk coverage provisions, while capital reserves and liquidity remained well above regulatory minimums. According to the report, the banking sector's capital adequacy ratio reached 19.9% in 2025, up from 19.6% in 2024, with the Tier 1 capital ratio rising to 15.7% from 15.2%. The NPL ratio dropped to 3.4% from 3.6%, while the NPL provision coverage ratio climbed to 84.6% from 77.4%. Liquid assets accounted for 25.2% of total assets and 58.8% of short-term liabilities. Meanwhile, the 9th Annual Report on Islamic Finance by Bait Al-Mashura Finance Consultations details the expansion of the broader Islamic finance ecosystem. Total sector assets reached QR718.5bn in 2025, up from QR682.3bn in 2024. Islamic banks held the largest share at 85.8%, QR616.5bn, reflecting a 5.3% annual growth rate that exceeded conventional commercial banks, which stood at 5%, representing nearly 28% of total Qatari banking assets. Sukuk ranked second with roughly 11% of total Islamic financial assets, followed by takaful (Islamic insurance) at 0.7%, with the remainder spread across Islamic finance, investment companies, and investment funds. Domestic assets of Islamic banks reached QR554.3bn, registering a 4.6% growth, while deposits rose 7.5% to QR364.4bn, accounting for nearly 35% of total banking sector deposits. Total financing provided by Islamic banks grew 4.2% to QR418.3bn, representing about 29% of total banking sector financing. The substantial footprint of Qatar's four Islamic banks, QIB, AlRayan Bank, Dukhan Bank, and QIIB, is underscored by their strong market shares across major economic sectors. Islamic banks accounted for 63% of total consumer financing, 44% of real estate financing, 42% of construction financing, and 34% of industrial financing, with 96% of their total financing directed toward the domestic market. Economists and industry experts interviewed by Qatar News Agency highlight that Islamic banking in Qatar is experiencing multifaceted growth, driven by digitalisation, financial innovation, and sustainable financing. CEO of QIIB D. Abdulbasit Ahmed al-Shaibei told QNA that the sector's outperformance stems from Qatar's solid operating environment, long-term strategic plans, and the sector's ability to innovate Shariah-compliant products tailored to retail and corporate needs while upholding risk management and governance standards. He highlighted that early investment in digital infrastructure enhanced operational efficiency, reduced costs, and improved customer experience, bolstering confidence in Islamic financial institutions. He added that QIIB relies on a solid capital base and solvency to scale digital offerings, establish strategic partnerships, and export Islamic banking expertise to international markets. On the sukuk market, al-Shaibei noted strong growth prospects tied to national development projects under Qatar National Vision 2030. He highlighted sukuk's mechanism for linking investment liquidity to real economic projects and QIIB's presence in international capital markets, ranging from its inaugural $700mn issuance in 2012 to its recent QR500mn listing on the Qatar Stock Exchange. He also emphasized the importance of green and sustainable instruments, pointing that QIIB's $500mn "Oryx" sustainable sukuk listed on the London Stock Exchange witnessed demand exceeding eight times the issuance value. Vice-Chairman of Bait Al-Mashura Finance Consultations, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, told QNA that digitalisation has become a primary driver of growth in Islamic finance, providing models and products capable of meeting customer needs and enhancing financial inclusion. He noted that the global Islamic fintech market has exceeded $198bn and is projected to reach $341bn by 2029 at a compound annual growth rate of 11.5%, with the artificial intelligence boom serving as a catalyst. He pointed out that sustainable sukuk issuances in Qatar have exceeded QR20bn, highlighting AlRayan Bank's QR500mn green sukuk listing on the QSE in Q1 as a major milestone. He urged continued regulatory updates aligned with global ESG standards, incentives for green issuers, expanded project eligibility, and deeper liquidity in secondary sukuk markets. Addressing major challenges, al-Sulaiti identified global economic uncertainty, geopolitical conflicts, supply chain friction, shifting borrowing costs, intense competition from conventional banks, and the difficulty of aligning rapid digital adoption with Sharia regulatory compliance.Nevertheless, he projected continued momentum for Qatari Islamic banking over the next five years, driven by an expanding asset base, increased private sector financing, and growing investment in renewable energy and green projects supporting Qatar's transition toward a sustainable, knowledge-based economy. Qatar's Islamic finance ecosystem also encompasses non-banking institutions, including takaful, sukuk, finance and investment companies and investment funds. The QCB report showed licensed Shariah-compliant finance companies grew their total assets by 3.6% to QR2.62bn by the end of 2025, with Islamic financing accounting for 78.8% of their total assets compared to 74.2% in 2024. 

 Integrating RoboTaxis into a modern urban transportation system offers residents and visitors a safe, comfortable, and consistent way to travel while adding capacity to the broader network, according to Dr James Peng, founder and CEO of Pony AI Inc (Pony.ai). Dr Peng made the statement in the wake of the recently concluded second edition of the Autonomous e-Mobility Forum (AEMOB), where Pony.ai and its local partner, Mowasalat (Karwa), highlighted the progress of their commercial RoboTaxi operations. Together with Mowasalat, Pony.ai has built an operational foundation and aims to advance this work to support a smarter, more sustainable transportation system in Qatar, Dr Peng said. Supervised by Qatar’s Ministry of Transport (MoT), the programme supports the country’s Autonomous Vehicles Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030 by advancing the safe integration of autonomous driving technology into public transportation, according to a Pony.ai statement. Doha serves as part of Pony.ai’s international expansion, which acts as the second engine of its growth strategy alongside China, the statement further pointed out. Through its joint deployment model, the company combines technology and commercialisation experience developed in China with partners’ fleet resources, local operating capabilities, and rider access. Its planned and potential overseas deployments exceed 4,000 vehicles, the statement noted. Pony.ai currently operates a commercial RoboTaxi service in Doha in collaboration with Mowasalat, Qatar's national mobility service provider. The vehicles provide fare-charging services through the Karwa app, making Doha one of the firm’s key commercial operations outside China. According to Pony.ai, the initiative began in August 2025 with initial public-road testing and launched a commercial pilot service in December 2025 with trained safety operators onboard. Coverage includes key commercial districts, tourist attractions, and city landmarks across Old Doha and West Bay, such as the Doha Corniche, the National Museum of Qatar, the Museum of Islamic Art, and Old Doha Port. It also provides an airport connection between Hamad International Airport and the city, serving travel needs ranging from daily commutes and airport transfers to sightseeing and leisure trips. Citing a July public update, Pony.ai stated that the MoT said the commercial pilot had delivered high passenger satisfaction and safety performance above initial targets. The ministry added that the operating and technical systems were ready for broader adoption of autonomous services, with a potential next phase aiming to advance toward fully driverless operation alongside relevant authorities, according to the update. The AEMOB Forum 2026 brought together government officials, policymakers, and industry leaders to advance autonomous, electric, and intelligent mobility. At this year's forum, Pony.ai demonstrated Gen-7 RoboTaxis operating without an onboard safety operator to give attendees a closer look at its fully driverless technology. 

Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) will host communications scholar Cheryll Soriano for the fourth annual NU-Q Lecture on the Global South on September 30 at the campus’ Projection Theater.Titled “Politics of Suturing: Infrastructural Labour and Survival in Platform Work,” her lecture will explore the experiences of workers navigating increasingly platform-mediated economies, with particular attention to the Philippines and other communities in the Global South.Soriano will also lead a workshop for NU-Q faculty and #IAS_NUQ Global Postdoctoral Scholars on researching and writing about digital platforms and platform labour from perspectives rooted in the Global South, followed by a mentoring lunch with undergraduate fellows.A scholar of communications and new media, Soriano studies how digital platforms are reshaping labour, livelihoods and everyday economic practices. Her research brings together questions of technology, labour, and development, offering insight into how digital economies affect workers beyond the dominant narratives of the Global North.As Principal Investigator for Fairwork Philippines, an international research network that evaluates gig platforms on issues including fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation, Soriano has examined the working conditions created by platforms such as Grab, Foodpanda and UpworkSoriano’s work has introduced the concept of “sachet capitalism” to describe the relationship between digital labour and the Philippines’ familiar sachet economy. Drawing a connection between the country’s widespread use of affordable, single-use packets and the rise of digital micro-transactions, she examines how platform economies make gig work accessible while enabling digital and financial technology companies to extract value from everyday informal labour.Another strand of her research examines how workers create their own informal support systems when formal protections are limited. Her work on “digital labour bayanihan” explores how freelancers and gig workers use online groups, chats, and informal networks to exchange information, share advice, and support one another in navigating the challenges of platform work. The concept draws on the Filipino tradition of bayanihan, referring to mutual assistance within a community or group."At Northwestern Qatar, we believe real understanding comes from mutual care and genuine engagement with the communities we study in addition to rigour in theory and methodology. Dr Soriano's research does exactly that, it centres the empirical experience of platform workers and the networks of support that sustain them, offering a model of scholarship rooted in community and fuelled by theoretical innovation." said Marwan M Kraidy, dean and CEO of NU-Q.Soriano has more than 100 publications and holds a PhD in Communications and New Media from the National University of Singapore, a MA degree in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies-Erasmus University in the Netherlands, and an BA in Political Science from the University of the Philippines.Before entering academia, Soriano worked with nonprofit research institutions in the Philippines on Internet governance and telecommunications policy. She also provided consultancy on microfinance interventions and spent seven years with the Presidential Management Staff in the Office of the President of the Philippines, providing research and decision support for development interventions in areas including e-governance, universal access and human security.Her fellowships have included research at Peking University, RMIT University in Australia and Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore. She was also an Isaac Manasseh Meyer Fellow in Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore in 2025.Organised by the Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ), the annual lecture series brings scholars and experts together to examine issues shaping societies across the Global South. The lecture is free to the public. 

Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), a Qatar Foundation partner university, will be presenting an exhibition titled Alternative Frequencies at the Ars Electronica Festival 2026 in Linz, Austria, from September 9–13.The Ars Electronica Festival, an annual international media art gathering in Linz featuring exhibitions, performances, and conferences, offers an eclectic platform for artistic expression, bringing together artists, scientists, activists, and engineers from around the world.“Alternative Frequencies demonstrates how interdisciplinary creative research can generate new ways of understanding the questions shaping contemporary life. By bringing students, faculty, and researchers into a shared process of inquiry and making, the exhibition positions collaboration, experimentation, and mentorship as central to knowledge production,” said Dr Diane Derr, associate dean for Research and Development at VCUarts Qatar.“Pedagogically, the project extends well beyond the classroom. Students develop research-driven work alongside faculty and bring that work into conversation with an international audience. They are not simply learning about creative research; they are actively advancing it.”Organised by the Gallery at VCUarts Qatar, the exhibition includes four experimental projects that demonstrate the multiple connections between visual and sonic systems, physical and digital interaction, biomaterials, and computational design.The exhibition’s title, Alternative Frequencies, draws on radio broadcasting, where multiple frequencies broadcast simultaneously to extend a signal’s strength and reach. In response to the festival’s 2026 theme, “Negotiating Humanity,” the exhibition considers who shapes the future and which possibilities it holds.By presenting new forms of interaction and cultural expression, Alternative Frequencies invites audiences to reflect on how meaning, perception, and communication can be translated across media.In her project Chromesthesia, Mayar Ahmed explores the question: “What does colour sound like?” by showing how visual information is re-encoded as sound. At the exhibition, visitors will be able to paint with red, green, blue, and yellow markers while a camera translates each colour into distinct sounds.Meanwhile, Ephemeral Sounds of the Gulf, created by Ayza Sheikh, Erika Tsuchiya, Hala Amer, Shawky Abdalla, Star Prieto, Yasamin Shaikhi, and Yasmeen Suleiman, uses biomaterials to reimagine the sonic and temporal profile of vinyl records. The project introduces new tonal possibilities while reducing ecological impact to raise awareness of the environmental implications of plastic pollution and an overly digitised world.The third project, Bloom: Inspired by Nature, is a digitally fabricated mechanical sculpture that accelerates and elaborates the natural rhythms of blooming flowers to show frequency as both a natural and constructed phenomenon. It was developed by Abdul Rahman Anwar, Anastasia Marinova, Ardini Wan Edrin, Fatima Nazir, Jood Elbeshti, Noura Sharaf, Rab McClure, Shawky Abdalla, and Zaid Abueisa.In Corporeal Resonance: Experimental Interactive Sound, Camerin McManus uses VCV Rack to develop an interactive gesture-based synthesiser that makes music from movement. The project positions the human body as an instrument and interface bridging physical and digital output.Each of the four projects brings a distinctive idea to Ars Electronica’s theme by proposing an alternative view of the future of creative practice: It is a dynamic and fluid form of expression that is not limited to a single frequency.“Our continued participation in the Ars Electronica Festival gives our students an invaluable opportunity to contribute research-driven work to global conversations on art and technology, while building relationships that can shape their future practice,” said Chase Westfall, curator and head of Gallery at VCUarts Qatar.Alternative Frequencies will be on view at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, from September 9–13. 

Qatar Charity (QC), in partnership with the Ministries of Health of Niger and Yobe States in Nigeria and Middle East Clinic Limited, performed 1,074 eye surgeries, enabling 1,018 vulnerable beneficiaries in northern Nigeria to regain their sight.The initiative is part of Qatar Charity’s ongoing “Ibsar” (Eyesight) Initiative to combat diseases that cause vision loss, and with the support of generous donors,The surgeries were conducted under a specialised campaign to combat preventable blindness and improve access to eye care services. The campaign also provided 270 white canes to visually impaired individuals whose sight could not be restored through surgery.Consultations and MedicationThe campaign benefited 4,000 men, women, children, and older adults who underwent screening for various eye conditions, while 2,912 beneficiaries received free medication, consultations, and specialised medical advice on eye health.**media[489494]**Among those who benefited from the surgeries were 20 children under the age of 18, including two children below the age of five. Approximately 98% of the surgical procedures addressed cataract-related blindness, while the remaining cases involved other eye conditions.The campaign was implemented in Niger and Yobe States, which have a combined population of approximately 7.87mn people. Many residents, particularly those living in rural and low-income communities, face limited access to specialised healthcare services, including eye care. Cataracts remain a leading cause of preventable blindness in northern Nigeria.The campaign included seven days of community-based eye screenings in each state, followed by surgical interventions at the State Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, Yobe State, and the Dr Idris Kuta Primary Health Care Centre in Minna, Niger State. Before implementation, the team carried out extensive awareness and community mobilisation activities in coordination with government authorities and community leaders to ensure services reached the targeted populations.**media[489495]**Irshad Ali Shekh, programmes manager at Qatar Charity’s Nigeria Branch, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to expanding access to healthcare services and improving the lives of vulnerable communities. He stressed that “Sight is a right, not a privilege,” and emphasised Qatar Charity’s continued cooperation with government institutions and partners to strengthen healthcare services and reduce preventable blindness.The campaign officially launched in late July 2026 during a ceremony in Minna, Niger State, attended by Mr Yakubu Garba, Deputy Governor of Niger State, and Asem Abu al-Shaer, Country Director of Qatar Charity’s Nigeria Branch. During the event, the Deputy Governor praised the strong partnership between the state government and Qatar Charity and commended the organisation’s contribution to improving local communities' well-being. He also reaffirmed the government’s support for Qatar Charity’s humanitarian and development initiatives.The campaign had a tangible impact on beneficiaries’ lives, enabling many to resume their daily, educational, and economic activities. Among them was Usman Muhammad, a 10-year-old boy from Niger State, who regained his sight following a successful operation and is now expected to return to school during the current academic year.Expressing his gratitude, his father, Muhammad, said: “My son was not attending school because he had lost his sight. Alhamdulillah, after the surgery, he regained his vision and will soon return to school during the current academic year.”Through this intervention, Qatar Charity reaffirms its commitment to supporting eye health services in Nigeria and implementing targeted initiatives that help reduce preventable blindness and improve the quality of life of vulnerable communities across the country.

Al Sadd will look to maintain their perfect start and stay at the top of the Qatar Stars League when the fourth round gets under way today, with Al Shamal and Al Rayyan hoping to keep the pressure on the defending champions.The six matches will be played over three days, with Al Sadd facing Al Sailiya at Lusail Stadium today, in what appears to be a favourable fixture for the league leaders.The three-time defending champions have won all three of their matches, scoring 13 goals in the process. Their latest success was a 4-1 victory over Al Gharafa, which left them alone at the summit. They have also reached the Qatar Cup final after beating Al Gharafa 2-1 in the semi-final.Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu, however, is taking nothing for granted as Al Sadd begin a busy period of the season. "Every match in the league is difficult, so we must be prepared for it in the best way possible. We need focus and mental discipline, along with the desire to continue working hard, to be ready in all aspects, and to treat the match as if it were a final," Lucescu said yesterday."This is the beginning of a very busy period for us, but we have to adapt to these circumstances and deal with them in the right way, especially since we have a group of players ready to give their all in order to win."Al Sailiya, meanwhile, are still searching for their first points of the campaign after losing their opening three matches. Their latest setback was a 2-0 defeat to Al Arabi, leaving them at the bottom of the table.Coach Mirghani al-Zein acknowledged the size of the challenge but said his team would be determined to produce a response. "Al-Sadd is the strongest team in the league, but Al-Sailiya will enter the match with the aim of giving their best and achieving a positive result," al-Zein said."We know that facing Al Sadd will not be easy, so we must be at the peak of focus and discipline throughout the match, and play to our full potential and maintain organization and cohesion in all lines of the team."Al-Zein added that Al Sailiya's performances had shown clear improvement from one match to the next, although the results had fallen short of expectations.Second-placed Al Shamal, meanwhile, will aim for a third consecutive victory when they host Al Wakrah at Al Bayt Stadium today. Al Shamal have collected seven points from their opening three matches, following wins over Al Gharafa and Al Shahaniya and a draw in their opening game. A victory would keep them firmly in the title race and increase the pressure on Al Sadd.Al Wakrah, on the other hand, are looking to recover from a damaging 4-0 defeat to newly promoted Lusail in the previous round. They have just one point and sit 11th, second from bottom.Chilean coach Jose Luis Sierra said his side must learn from their mistakes and restore their confidence. "I apologise to the fans and the club for the previous match, and I believe that although we have not yet achieved victory, we are performing well technically and in terms of the level of football," Sierra said."Our goal is to bring the team back to its previous level and correct the mistakes. We hope that in the next match we can rectify the situation, change the image, and achieve a positive result."Al Shamal coach David Prats expects a difficult encounter despite Al Wakrah's poor start. "Our match against Al Wakrah will be difficult because, in my opinion, they are one of the best teams in the league, even though they are not at their best during this period," Prats said."We are excited for the match and are looking forward to winning the three points, which is always our goal in every match we play."Al Rayyan, also on seven points and behind Al Shamal on goal difference, will host Al Ahli at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium tomorrow. Al Rayyan were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Duhail in the previous round after winning their opening two matches. They will be keen to return to winning ways, having also reached the Qatar Cup final at the expense of Al Shamal.Al Ahli, meanwhile, picked up their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Qatar SC. The result took them to four points and seventh place.Elsewhere tomorrow, Al Gharafa will face Lusail at Khalifa International Stadium in a meeting between two sides heading into the game with contrasting momentum.Al Gharafa have lost their last two matches and slipped to ninth with three points following their 4-1 defeat to Al Sadd. Lusail, by contrast, will be full of confidence after recording their first-ever top-flight victory, a 4-0 demolition of Al Wakrah that lifted them to sixth with four points.Saturday's programme begins with Al Arabi taking on Qatar SC at Al Thumama Stadium. Al Arabi earned their first victory of the campaign with a 2-0 win over Al Sailiya, taking their tally to five points and moving them into fourth place. Qatar SC have endured a difficult start, with two defeats and a draw leaving them with one point in 10th place.The round concludes with Al Duhail hosting Al Shahaniy Qatar’s Under-23 national football team is stepping up preparations for their Asian Games campaign, with coach Jose Angel Lacunza also using domestic competition to give his young players valuable match experience.Qatar will open their Asian Games campaign against South Korea on September 15 before taking on Saudi Arabia three days later on September 18.With the tournament fast approaching, Lacunza believes the team’s participation in the Qatar’s second division is providing an important platform for the players to develop and gain experience against senior opposition.The Spanish coach has welcomed the opportunity to compete in the second division, saying the regular matches are helping both the coaching staff and players prepare for the challenges ahead.The Asian Games men’s football tournament will feature 15 teams, with the competition running from September 14 to October 3 across venues in Japan’s Chubu and Kansai regions.The tournament will be played by Under-23 national teams, with squads allowed to include up to three overage players.Qatar were drawn in Group D with South Korea and Saudi Arabia. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. South Korea enter the tournament as defending men’s champions.For Qatar, the immediate focus will be on building rhythm and ensuring the players are ready for the two group matches, with the second league providing Lacunza with another opportunity to assess his squad before the Asian Games.
