France announced yesterday it has banned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir from entry for mocking bound activists seized by Israeli soldiers on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.“From today, Itamar Ben Gvir is banned from entering French territory” after “his reprehensible actions towards French and European citizens” who were part of the humanitarian flotilla, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on X. He added that, with Italy, he was also calling for European Union-level sanctions against the far-right Israeli minister. The ban follows a global outcry after Ben Gvir published a video on Wednesday showing the heavy-handed treatment in Israeli custody of foreign activists from the flotilla.They were detained by Israel after its soldiers seized them in international waters. In the video, dozens of activists are seen forced to kneel with their foreheads to the ground and their hands tied.The clip, which was captioned “Welcome to Israel”, showed Ben Gvir heckling the activists while waving an Israeli flag. After the outcry, Israel said it was deporting the activists. Thirty-six French nationals were on board the flotilla, the latest attempt by activists to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza after Israeli forces intercepted a previous convoy last month. While Barrot said France disapproved of the flotilla’s actions, arguing they served “no useful purpose”, he added that “we cannot tolerate French nationals being threatened, intimidated or brutalised in this way, especially by a public official.” Spain has also urged the EU to sanction Ben Gvir while the United Kingdom summoned Israel’s most senior diplomat in Britain following “the inflammatory video”.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Ben Gvir’s treatment of the activists was “not in line with Israel’s values and norms”, but he kept the security minister in his post. Netanyahu had earlier denounced the humanitarian aid mission as a “malicious scheme” intended to support Hamas.The activists had departed from Turkey last week on around 50 vessels under the Global Sumud Flotilla. Israel controls all entry points into Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007.  

HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani chaired the Cabinet’s regular meeting yesterday morning at the Amiri Diwan. Following the meeting, HE the Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali al-Mohannadi said the Cabinet, at the outset of the meeting, extended its highest congratulations to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on the imminent advent of the blessed Eid al-Adha, praying to Almighty Allah to return this blessed occasion to His Highness with the best of health and happiness, to Qatar and its people and residents with prosperity and growth under His Highness the Amir’s wise leadership, and to the Arab and Islamic nations with goodness, welfare and blessings. The Cabinet commended His Highness the Amir’s honouring of the winners of the seventh edition of the State Appreciation Award and the State Incentive Award in science, arts, and literature, in recognition of their significant contributions to their respective fields and their role in supporting national development and enriching the cultural and intellectual landscape locally and globally. The Cabinet also congratulated the winners, commending their outstanding contributions and wishing them continued success in serving their country and nation. The Cabinet then considered the topics on its agenda and approved a draft law regulating the practice of social professions. The draft law, prepared by the Ministry of Social Development and Family within the framework of implementing its strategy, is in line with the Third National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030. It aims to establish an integrated legislative framework to regulate the practice of social professions in the country by identifying the controls, provisions and professional standards necessary for practising them. The draft law also seeks to support the participation of the private and non-profit sectors in providing these services within a legal framework that ensures governance, transparency and sustainability, and to enable the competent authorities to carry out their tasks in supervision, monitoring and follow-up. It further establishes unified mechanisms for measuring the quality of social services in a way that ensures their improvement and development. The Cabinet also approved a draft decision of the Minister of Public Health determining the fees due for licences in the field of health research. The draft decision comes within the framework of implementing the provisions of Law No. 6 of 2025 regulating health research, with the aim of regulating the procedures related to granting licences in this field. At the end of the meeting, the Cabinet took note of the audited financial statements of the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority (QFCRA) for the financial year ended December 31, 2025, and the annual report on the QFCRA’s activities for the year 2025. 

Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, met Monday with His Excellency the Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri.During the meeting, they discussed bilateral co-operation relations in the labour field and ways to develop them. They also underscored the importance of strengthening co-operation frameworks and advancing areas of mutual interest in labour-related matters. 

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has said his country has had enough “reckless” wars for foreign interests, calling for Arab and international support in Beirut’s negotiations with Israel. Speaking at an non-governmental organisation (NGO) dinner on Friday, Salam said that he hoped to “mobilise all Arab and international support to bolster our position in the negotiations” with Israel, shortly after the last round of talks ended and extended the ongoing truce for 45 days. In an implicit rebuke to Hezbollah, which joined the Middle East war in support of Iran on March 2, Salam said the country had “enough of these reckless adventures serving foreign projects or interests, the latest being a war we did not choose but was forced upon us, which led to Israel occupying 68 towns and villages”. “And after all this, with all the killing, destruction, displacement, and tragedies (the war) brought, someone comes along trying to insult our intelligence and calls it a victory,” he added, also hinting at Hezbollah. “Enough with the incitement and accusations of treason; this will not and cannot intimidate us.”  

There is a particular kind of hush that settles over a great book fair in the moments before its doors swing open — the breath drawn between silence and the long murmur of pages — and Thursday that hush belonged to Doha, as His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani inaugurated the 35th edition of the Doha International Book Fair at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, an event that will keep its doors and its volumes open to the public until May 23. **media[445476]**It was, by any measure, a gathering worthy of the occasion. Their Excellencies sheikhs, ministers, heads of diplomatic missions, senior officials and guests of the fair walked the aisles alongside the Prime Minister, who moved unhurriedly between the pavilions of Qatari, Arab and international publishers, pausing over the latest books, the patient calligraphy of manuscripts, and the cultural works mounted by the Ministry of Culture, government entities and participating institutions.  At the heart of his tour, the prime minister launched the "This Is Qatar" book project — the signature offering of this year's guest of honour initiative, and a quiet but deliberate act of self-portraiture by a country accustomed to telling its story in many tongues. **media[445477]**The numbers, when they came, read almost like a paean to abundance. Organised by Qatar's Ministry of Culture, this year's edition has gathered 520 publishing houses from 37 Arab and foreign countries into 910 booths, beneath whose modest signage rest more than 1.85mn books spanning some 231,000 titles. Organisers said 143 new books would be launched during the fair, threaded between 46 panel discussions, 69 workshops and 46 seminars on the main stage — a programme of such density that one suspects the calendar itself had to be persuaded to make room.  Speaking to Qatar News Agency, Jassim Ahmed al-Buainain, Director of the Libraries Department at the Ministry of Culture and Director of the fair, set out the contours of a cultural festival that has long since outgrown the simple act of selling books. Lectures, literary discussions and workshops will run across disciplines, he said, and the winners of the second Doha International Book Fair Award — six categories devised to honour Qatari and international authors and publishers — will be announced before the fair closes. **media[445479]**On the main stage, a cultural programme will assemble writers, intellectuals and academics from Qatar and abroad to argue, in the civilised way of such gatherings, about literature and thought, while the cultural salon will quieten itself for book signings and dialogue sessions with authors.  There will be "Reading Guide" sessions to steer the bewildered visitor through the shelves, and a dedicated "Doha Children's Zone" of interactive performances for the young — for whom, in the end, every book fair is really built. Qatar's own writers will be much in evidence. **media[445851]**The Qatari Authors Forum, affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, will mount a sustained programme of cultural, educational and intellectual events, gathering writers, researchers and academics from inside and outside the country.  More than 100 new publications by Qatari authors and residents will be launched during the fair, alongside over 25 intellectual seminars, 15 specialist lectures and 12 discussion sessions on cultural and social questions — a tally that suggests local literary life is in robustly good health.  The fair will open daily from 9am to 10pm, except on Fridays, when visitors will be admitted from 3pm until 10pm. Special attention, organisers said, had been paid this year to children and young readers, including a mobile library bus that has already wound its way through some 12 schools, carrying the rumour of reading to the country's classrooms. **media[445848]**The Doha International Book Fair is, after all, among the oldest and largest of its kind in the region. First launched in 1972 under the supervision of Qatar's national library authority, it was held every two years before turning annual in 2002, and since 2010 it has welcomed a guest country at each edition — the United States, Turkiye, Iran, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, France, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Palestine among them.  To stand at its threshold this week, then, is to stand inside more than half a century of accumulated reading — and to be reminded that a city, like a person, is in part the sum of the books it has chosen to keep.

Indian film star C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as chief minister of Tamil Nadu state yesterday after his new party brokered a coalition in the southern industrial hub. The swearing-in ceremony followed days of high drama in the state capital Chennai, where Vijay’s fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party initially struggled to secure support from smaller parties after state elections. Vijay’s TVK, founded only two years ago, emerged as the single largest party after the vote with 108 seats in Tamil Nadu’s 234-member legislative assembly, short of a simple majority.However, it won support from other parties, including the opposition Congress, to take its number of seats to 120, making it possible for Vijay to claim the top job. Thousands of supporters gathered in Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium yesterday, chanting “Mudhalvar”, or “chief minister” in Tamil, to watch Vijay take his oath of office.“I am not from a royal political background, just a common man,” the 51-year-old told the crowd. “My primary focus will be on basic issues such as education, ration supplies, healthcare, drinking water, roads and bus facilities,” he said.Vijay’s first set of policies included measures to ease electricity prices and improve women’s safety. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Vijay, saying the central government would work with his administration to “improve the lives of people”. Vijay, born to a Christian father and a Hindu mother, began his career as a child actor in 1984 in a movie directed by his filmmaker father.Known for his charismatic screen presence and mass appeal, his fans dubbed him “Thalapathy”, or “leader” in Tamil. His blockbuster hits blended action, social messaging and populist themes, burnishing his reputation as a voice for the common man. He cultivated his public image over the years by taking on roles that touched on subjects ranging from farmers’ issues to electoral manipulation. He launched the TVK in 2024 with a promise to end corruption and strengthen social justice. Tamil Nadu is one of India’s most significant economic engines, with its industrial sector producing everything from automobiles to electronics. The state is also India’s smartphone manufacturing hub, including for Apple iPhones.

His Excellency Minister of Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani attended the closing of the 2026 Military Obstacle Championship held at the obstacle field in the training village.The championship aims to test participants' endurance, assess response speed, and strengthen teamwork while fostering positive competition.At the conclusion of the event, he honoured the Special Unit "Lifdawiya" team, winners of the championship banner.

Nepal's home minister stepped down Wednesday over growing criticism of his finances, the second member of the cabinet to leave the new government just weeks after it was formed.Sudan Gurung, a key figure in the Gen-Z protests in September that toppled Nepal's previous government, said he was leaving his post ensure a "fair investigation"."For me, morality is greater than a position and there is no greater power than public trust... Public life should be clean, leadership should be accountable," said 38-year-old Gurung, who took office on March 27.Gurung is the second minister to leave the new government after the labour minister Deepak Kumar Sah was dismissed over allegations of committing misconduct by getting his wife appointed to a health insurance board.Dipa Dahal, press adviser to Prime Minister Balendra Shah, confirmed Gurung's resignation had been received.Gurung participated in the deadly protests that began as a demonstration against a brief social media ban, but were fed by wider grievances over corruption and a poor economy.At least 76 people were killed and more than 2,500 wounded during the two days of violence in September.In January, Gurung joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and won a seat in parliament after the party swept to a landslide victory in the March elections.Gurung made headlines a day after taking his oath of office for arresting former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and ex-home minister Ramesh Lekhak for their alleged involvement in the deadly crackdown on protesters in September.'Impartial' probe But soon he himself was beset by allegations over his financial investments and assets, as well as links with a businessman being investigated for money laundering.Last week, Shah and his cabinet disclosed their assets to the public, in line with local laws requiring lawmakers to declare their financial status.Soon after the disclosure, local media reported that Gurung had not revealed some of his financial investments.At least two Nepali websites published a government-stamped document that listed Gurung as an investor in a company that he did not specifically name in his disclosures.Gurung claimed that he had lumped his investments together in the disclosure documents.Public pressure had since been mounting on the government to investigate Gurung.The opposition Nepali Congress said it would not be possible to carry out an impartial probe if Gurung remained in his position."It is natural that there will be doubt over direct or indirect influence over the investigation process," it said in a statement on Monday, calling for an "independent and impartial" probe.On Monday, Gurung dismissed the allegations as "rumours" and denied withholding information regarding his investments."I would just like to say that accusations and truth are not the same thing. Decisions should be based on evidence, not emotion," he said on social media.Earlier this month, the government formed a five-member commission led by a former Supreme Court judge to investigate the assets of politicians and officials.The commission was a part of the government's 100-point reform agenda issued after Shah took office to tackle corruption in the Himalayan nation.Nepal currently ranks 109th out of 180 countries on Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index.
